Kid Hendrix looks at SHANGHAI NOON

Published at:  Jun 12, 1999 11:44:08 PM CDT

Harry here, with a brief look, from Kid Hendrix, at SHANGHAI NOON... an upcoming Jackie Chan flick that also stars Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Steve Buscemi... So basically it's the best American cast that Jackie has had a chance to work with yet... The director that is attached, Tom Dey, hasn't had a film out yet, but he is connected with multiple projects at the moment (DOUBLE O SOUL and BAD BOYS 2). So take that for what it is worth and check out what the Kid has to say...

Hey Harry, Kid Hendrix here. I just finished reading the script for
"Shanghai Noon" by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. I'm not going to give any
spoilers, because I hate reading those. Roger Birnbaum is producing this
film, and let's just say I'm not a huge fan of his films. He doesn't have
the best track record (Holy Man, Simon Birch, Celtic Pride, etc.) This
script had some good attributes. Sounds like it's going to have some great
action. Birnbaum did produce "Rush Hour," which had some great action in it.
And the film stars Jackie Chan.

The story isn't breakthrough, but I have no gripes about it. A Chinese
princess is kidnapped, and they send Jackie Chan's character to retrieve her.
He meets up with an American bandit-in-training in the American southwest,
and they team up. Some good situations, and one particullarly funny jail
scene (if you want to hear about it, e-mail me at kidhendrix@aol.com). My
one major gripe is that a lot of this dialogue is TERRIBLE! Owen Wilson's
character has terrible, cliched lines. They try to make jokes about this,
but it can't cover up the fact that better dialogue could have been written
by Adam Sandler. I'll be getting a copy of the final script soon, so I'll
let you all know if any of my opinions change. I doubt it though. This
looks like a typical Roger Birnbaum movie with cheesy dialogue, but great
action. Kind of a Rush Hour meets Holy Man.

Wasn't the first Bad Boys bad enough

    by paragonian

It's sad to see Owen Wilson wasted in Armegeddon and probably this one too. He was so good in Bottle Rocket but hasn't done shit since. I can already tell this movie's gonna blow just by looking at the players's trackrecords. I really hope another Bad Boys doesn't get made cause the only good thing about the first one was the style and some of the action and without Bay it's really gonna be bad. It seems like these producers are taking good actors from previous low budget great films( Swingers, Bottle Rocket, Reservoir Dogs) and sticking them in bloated shit.

    by ricky

Every Jackie Chan film I've seen is about some chick getting kidnapped and he goes to save her, sometimes teaming up with some dude, they're pretty coool, though.

    Jackie and "Nosebleed"

    by rodzilla

Jackie showed up at the MTV movie awards looking great with REALLY long hair and a cowboy hat to promote this flick. I hope it's good, but the project I'm really looking forward to seeing is "Nosebleed." Hey Jackie, "lung fu mo shi!!!"

Ricky, what are you talking about?

    by devil0509

Jeez, man, if you haven't seen any Jackie Chan flicks except Rush Hour, just admit it. Every Jackie Chan movie about some girl getting kidnapped? I've seen a bunch of them, and the ONLY one I remember that being central to the plot is Rush Hour (maybe Police Story, but it's been a LONG time since I've seen it.) Before you write about something, make sure you know what you're talking about. And if you want to see GOOD Jackie Chan, don't watch the American made crap. Go rent Drunken Master, Drunken Master 2, Armor of God, or Police Story 1, 2, or 3 (yes, I know his girlfriend gets nabbed in Police Story 3, but that's for about 2 seconds and not a remotely central part to the story). By the way, for awesome martial arts, I just finished watching Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China 2 for the third time, and man that has GOT to be one of the best martial arts flix of all time. Watching My Father is a Hero tomorrow for the first time...can't wait.

    Jackie and hot chicks

    by vermilion

Y'know, Jackie isn't always saving his girlfriend, per se, but you have to admit his more recent films constantly pair him up with some girl he usually ends up having to help. The two girls in Who Am I?, the reporter in Mr. Nice Guy, the girl neighbor in Rumble in the Bronx...
Go back to like '87 or '88, and you've got goofy stuff like Dragons Forever which focuses on Jackie's goofy relationships. Chan definietly has a trend of including female co-stars in his work. Going back as far as Drunken Master, Jackie wasn't in charge to choose, but since he's been able to more or less run his own show, you almost expect an attractive female for Jackie to save in his films...

    Tom Dey / Shanghai Noon

    by client

I represent Tom and put this deal together based on the script that you've read. I think when you have a chance to re-read the shooting draft re-written by the Weitz bros. (American Pie) with suggestions from Owen Wilson you'll agree that it's much improved. The casting combination is a winning one under the helm of Tom who brings a style, originality and character quitly that I believe will win over audiences.

  • Most Jackie flicks don't have much of a story anyways but I'm looking forward to more vintage Jackie action this time as compared to Rush Hour.

And it should be as evidently, Jackie has more control (he's one of the producer?)this time and he's getting Sammo & /or Yuen Biao to do the action choreography.

Vince vaughn! Owen Wilson AAACCCKK!! I see pretty much every Jackie Chan film, but seeing those two yahoos attempting to be in a JC film. Yuck plain and simple. Bottle Rocket and Swingers are two of the suckiest films I have ever had the pleasure of walking out of. and just to make sure, I rented them both on video and gave them another chance (let's see, I've walked out of a total of 4 movies in my whole life, those two therefore account for half). Yikes. Does anyone rememeber VV from Lost World? where did you get the idea this shmuck could act? From his "swingers" role? Yeeesh. I just pray that Jackie has more screen time and gets to do at least a couple of good action sequences, otherwise count me out of this crap.
