‘What The Fuck Is That Thing??’ Behold The Lepidopterists!! THE VENTURE BROS. 3.10!!

Published at:  Aug 02, 2008 1:12:40 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“I think the less hurtful word is ‘protagonist’.”

A lepidopterist is an individual who catches and collects, studies, or simply observes lepidopterans, members of an order encompassing moths and the three superfamilies of butterflies, skipper butterflies, and moth-butterflies.

“The Lepidopterists,” entirely devoid though it is of Hank, Dean and Rusty Venture, is one of the funniest “Venture Bros.” installments ever forged.

Dr. Mrs. Monarch is back in the pink pillbox. 21 and 24 advise a new partner. The pirate discovers there are worse things than getting subdued. And we get to meet both Doe and Cardholder.

Wait till 11:30 p.m. Sunday to catch it on Cartoon Network or just watch the whole thing now with fewer commercials here.

This and the Last Episode Are Way Up There in the Rankings

    by aquatarkusman

Henchman #1... getting sucked off by an angel... Voltron with an ice cream clown-arm... "You're not the boss of Tiger-bot Hesh!"... "Yeah, well have fun on the robot reservations, suckers... we're not gonna honor those bogus treaties!" Wait a minute, those last two were from retro-Adult Swim tonite.

    by the-duke-of-new-york

I didn't even realize this season had a real arc until this episode. It seemed like just a support season, filling in holes. It looks like after this next episode, when the two-parter starts, we're going to have yet another bad-ass giant battle, like the one between the Monarch henchmen and Phantom Limb's Guild type. What I love about Venture Bros. is that it manages to be totally fucking hilarious and a pretty goddamn good action cartoon to boot.

Just started the episode, but why...

    by danielkurland

Did they go back to the full theme used at the beginning of the season. Was it just because the episode ran shorter than the others? I know it's not a big deal, but when this show changes anything from what they regularly do, I assume there's a fairly awesome reason why. Also, why had Dr. Girlfriend reverted back to her old costume? Did she feel more empowered or a better "queen" in it? She just kind of changed at the end of that episode...

Great in all respects and a reminder that The Monarch is actually pretty capable when he needs to be. Also, in spite of how funny 21 and 24's stuff was, I would have loved for them to be killed while they were doing their speech about how invincible they are.

    by tehdeej

It feels like the moment that you realize a relationship isn't going to work out. I feel awful that I really can't make myself like this season. I'm just now noticing that the comedy aspects of the show are coming from the "I NO WAT THARE REFERNCING AND THERE 4 I FIND THAT FUNNY" class of comedy, and I just can't love the characters as much as I did before this turned into the Robot Chicken Bros. The only truly hilarious episodes in this season were the Quymm and Sgt. Hatred eps. I'm glad they've started work on Season 4, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the last. Sigh.

    by woggerman

While they do have those moments, I can't help but disagree with you. The Venture Bros has been about spoofing the Action Cartoons since the very beginning and making references is part of that. There still is a story arc this season and what is great is that we got to see the origins of many of the characters. Name another cartoon that takes the time to explain the backstory of the 2nd tier characters as well as the main ones. This universe is growing and it actually feels like the season is going to end with a bang(or so I hope). The buildup they are doing is incredible. So what you see as just jokes and references, I see as pieces to a whole package. Can't wait for next week!

    by mockingbuddha

That episode kicked ass tehdeej, its not just recognizing the references, it the little things, like the Ghost Pirate suffering under the g-force while the giant robot swings it's sword. The comedy is still there for me, but this show stopped feeling like a simple comedy show for me a long time ago. If I just want funny there's always Family Guy, this show is more like, I don't know, a really great comic book.

It *IS* called the Venture Bros after all..

    by fracturedlojak

And Jonas Venture Jr *is* a Venture Bros. That is what is brilliant about the show, by introducing Jonas Jr, the writer's gave themselves a whole different range of directions to go in. Besides, Hank recently found out he's "immortal" and you know that's not going to be a one-off Highlander joke they're going to forget about.

It was Klaus Nomi. He was a bizarre German singer who was mildly popular in his niche in the 80s. Bowie took him under his wing a bit, and the two performed together some...the guy could basically sing like a female opera singer (and did, in many strange songs). I think he died of AIDS back when AIDS was just becoming a serious problem.

By the way, WAS last week's episode out of order, or what? Either way, it and this one are fantastic.

Now that Rusty is fair game for the Monarch, anyone willing to bet that the finale is us finally finding out why Monarch hates Rusty so much, Hank thinking he's unkillable and getting whacked, and Brock then going into a rage and (permanently) killing Girlfriend, 24, or 21, until Jonas Sr. comes back from the grave to lay the smackdown on Monarch in the last minute of the season?

Weakest episode this season, yet still good in so many ways

    by mcvamp

The Voltron bit kind of put me off the episode at first, though Ned's Clown Cone ship was pretty awesome. I think they should have gone more "Thunderbirds" with the bit instead of recycling a gag that "Mecha-Shiva" did so much better two seasons ago. 21 and 24 are dangerously close to realizing they're in a cartoon. As for the final confirmation that the Guild is just a bunch of insane overgrown children who like fighting in costumes so much that they practically blackmail the world into joining in, well...that's nice, but it opens up a real turning point in the show. One got the feeling the characters were self-aware about how ridiculous the whole "Guild vs. Adventurers vs. OSI" thing seemed, but between Jonas Jr and Brock, the bubble just popped on the whole "Costume Play-as-Career" angle the Guild's been running. It'll take one hell of a writing job to salvage this show from a "Moonlighting"-type of downturn (post-David and Maddie hook-up.) BUT...I'm very confident Hammer and Publick have it in them.

    by fiester

It's throwaway line from season one, during the flashback to college where Rusty says something along the lines of "If you think that's weird you should see the eyebrows on this guy in my creative writing class" or something to that effect. Obviously Rusty gave Monarch's poetry a vicious workshopping and Monarch vowed revenge. That's my guess anyway.
