John Carpenter To Toss Nicolas Cage Back In Prison For SCARED STRAIGHT??
I am – Hercules!!
It looks like Nicolas Cage, who has seen more than his share of cell walls thanks to “Raising Arizona,” “Face/Off,” “The Rock,” and “Con Air,” is headed back to stir.
He’s negotiating to star in “Scared Straight,” likely to be directed by John Carpenter, whose own experience with penal institutions includes “Escape From New York” and “Escape From L.A.”
The Hollywood Reporter has the plot:
"Straight" follows a troubled youth who's sent to prison off the Scared Straight crime-prevention program, which imprisons delinquent teens for a short period in the hopes of deterring them from a life of crime. While the teen is there, a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage. A lifer, played by Cage, is forced to help the young man out.

Its been a long time. Here's hopin'.
-
know how to mix ripe with a healthy dose of rotten.
-
Stay away from my favorite filmmakers. First Herzog and now Carpenter?
-
Once, he was one of the most exciting directors in the world. But his work has been campy for an awfully long time. I remain a fan of his early work. His last truly good film was STARMAN.
-
Carpenter's were cool. (And this is no brown-nosing for Drew).
-
I may not end my life after all.
-
...No stranger to shitty screenplays is this equine gentleman.
-
...With Ellen Page as the youngster and Angelina Jolie as the lifer and you've got my ten bucks. Otherwise, I'd rather BE in jail then watch this shit.
-
doesn't that count for something?
-
the Nicholas Coppola part, not so much
-
The Thing has come back. Unfortunately, I haven't
liked anything he has made
in the last 10 years. Maybe
this will be retribution. I
have to be optimistic. -
lol...just lol
-
RIO BRAVO remade as a prison flick. This is material Carpenter could do some good with. Here's hoping. As for me, his last truly good movie was PRINCE OF DARKNESS, for all kinds of reasons.
-
Cus I hate everything he does now too. Nic Cage used to be great; Carpenter equally so. Both need to find a huge comeback to get their cred back; I doubt this is it.
-
... in a jail cell as well.
-
piss off Carpenter haters....hmmm VAMPIRES anyone?...James Woods was AWESOME in that too...and Cigarette Burns....also awesome. And since when is it what have you done lately?...you don't stop being awesome because of some bad flicks...fuck his greatness will always be intact...HALLOWEEN, The THING, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE FOG, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, DARK STAR, fuck some filmakers are lucky to have 1 influential and classic flick...thats 6....shit his bad stuff is still miles ahead of todays horror shit. So umm maybe give him a chance ok...geez...like fuck....come on.
-
but i'd rather watch paint dry than sit through a viewing of ghosts of mars.
-
What about THEY LIVE? ESCAPE FROM L.A.? VAMPIRES? MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN?
All better than PRINCE OF DARKNESS. -
I haven't seen Ghosts of Mars, but to say he hasn't done anything good in the last ten years is kinda redundat since he hasn't done much at all.
Duh. -
...I just read in a newspaper (Metro.co.uk - not the most reliable) that Nolan WILL be doing the next Batman, and WILL be featuring the Riddler and that said Riddler will be Johnny Depp. I also heard from another source that there is a grain of truth in the story because even though the script still needs work, the studios are keen to make another since Dark Knight box office has not been affected by the credit crunch!! Strong ticket sales and the fear that Bale will get tied up in the Terminator franchise, has made studio execs impatient. If its true - It is awesome.
As for Nic Cage and this project...unless its a shawshank type of movie concentrating on the relationships and darkness of prison, this just wont appeal... -
Wait, they all died didn't they... OK, OZ : The Next Generation, now with 50% more penises, so that would be 100%...

In the Mouth of Madness was last great Carpenter movie
by harryblackpotter
I really loved Cigarette Burns from Master of Horror tv show too. Vampires, Ghosts of Mars had their moments, but not enough. Still, it's an impressive resume of awesomeness: Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York,Prince of Darkness, The Fog and not forgetting, Elvis the movie - Seriously, these are some of my all time favourite movies.
-
subtitle: "Grounded"
-
was so bad, one had to contemplate if it crossed over into the so bad its good region, unfortunately, it doesn't do that either.
-
or Dean Stanton
-
Prince of Darkness, They Live and In The Mouth of Madness are all great films. They look like classics now compared to all the Cabin Fever and Hostel crap.
-
Dark Star, Elvis, Assault on Precint 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live and In The Mouth of Madness. OK, so I left off his crap films but still, quite a list.

Maybe Nic Cage will get scared enough to get a new Wig maker
by xiphos_2
Instead of using Donald Trumps.
-
So I stand corrected there. I do love me some PRINCE OF DARKNESS tho...
-
"I'm gonna save the fucking day."

...and Cyrus the Virus was a worthy adversary.

"...the next wings you see will belong to the flies buzzing over
by finding forrestal
Time to break out my VHS copy.
-
Fucking hell.
-
RED EYE was more than passable entertainment. Tho he's made some stinkers: that Eddie Murphy vampire film, DEADLY FRIEND, THE HILLS ARE ALIVE 2, CURSED and so on...
-
Con Air - one of the one-liner kings. More than half that movie is quote-worthy.
-
i can't really remember the last good film JC helmed, but it sure as hell wasnt ghost of mars AKA Escape from Big Daddy martian.Feh, no wonder why courtney love dropped out of the project.and Ice Cube will star in anything just to take a paycheck. (Can you say "are we there yet"?)Hopefully SS will make a return to form for Carp. Not only can the old fucker direct and write, but he scores his Movies as well...most of the time.I would like a remake of EFLA. He owes us for that mess of a sequel.
-
I’m looking forward to seeing Nick Cage locked up again on the big screen but I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing John Carpenter back in the mix. I’m there opening night – no doubt.
-
"Scared Straight" being a prison film... lol, is he the only straight guy on the prison? Are we talking about the suspense of the shower scenes? Actually is a good title for a comedy-gay-porn! Lol.
-
the last 20 minutes of the movie are almost perfect... the garage duel is... wow.
-
his outstanding early works plus the fact that the Thing is my number 1 film and plisken is the man, but his later stuff has been lacking, i'd love to see the guy back on form

Only if Cage speaks that immortal line: "Dear, Hummin'bird..."

"...With Ellen Page as the youngster and Angelina Jolie as the lifer and you've got my ten bucks." I am so jerking off to that vision next time I pull it.
-
...my favorite director teamed with one of my favorite actors.
For somewhat current Carpenter that kicks ass - In the Mouth of Madness. Hell, I even enjoy EFLA, Vampires(James Woods, another fav), and Ghosts of Mars. -
I think those guys just come with the prison set. Deal me in for this. We also need some respectable actor slumming like how Joan Allen is in that new DeathRace. I vote for Laura Linney, it's time she got into absurd action features.

Henstridge kicked ass, as did Statham. You got Pam Grier, lesbian innuendo, ghost of aliens possessing humans and turning them into masochistic killing machines, some good gore, some creepy moments, good score. awesome ending.
Sure, Statham's character just seemed to dissapear about halfway through for no reason but what can you do.
I regard GoM as a B cult movie with a lot of similarites too Assault on Precicnt 13, though not as good.
Call it a guilt pleasure I guess but there has to be some other fans of it. -
Carpenter and Cage? Why the fuck not? Give them both a chance to show us they still have what it takes.
-
Will Nick Cage's toupee have its own cell? Will it get conjugal visits?
-
I never understood all the hatred for Ghosts of Mars myself. For me it’s an entertaining B movie.
Of all his movies I would say the only one that does not work for me is Village of the Damned, it feels flat. Bring on the new film.
-
he just is, DID ANYONE SEE HIS FUCKING HAIR IN NEXT? That had to be CG
-
Wow, carpenter doing a film where an anti-hero emerges to kick some ass? Didn't see that one coming.*
*It should be noted that I love 70-80's (and even some of early 90's Carpenter). That's why it's been so frustrating to watch the guy burn-out. I mean, how could somebody who created such an amazing character/film in Snake Plissken shit all over their own creation by making the atrocity that is Escape From L.A? And for any of you douchebags that say, "he just wanted to make a campy, fun, film," that's a bunch of crap and you know it. Stop being an apologist for him when you know he was just looking for the paycheck because his weed supply was running low.
I mean seriously, compare The Thing to Ghosts of Mars? Exactly how high was carpenter when he was making that film? I would have love to have seen the pitch, "I'll remake Assault on Precinct 13, only the gangsters are now Martians....or possibly cross-dressers."
Damn you Carpenter, damn you to Hell.
-
a.k.a. Toss My Salad
-
Color Me Shocked.
-
Vampires has moments, but it ain't great.
-
I thought that was a go?
-
people missed the point on Escape From LA . It was corny and cliche and over the top ON PURPOSE!!! It wasn't gonna be gritty and cool and tough like the first one . The first one was representative of New York in the late 70's early 80's . The sequel was rep. of LA in the late 80's early 90's .
I thought it was kinda brilliant and very very fun !
Carpenter needs to bring us a Jack Burton sequel ! -
gimme esacape from earth!
-
You're right - Con Air is an eminently quotable film.
-
Two of the last action flicks I truly loved (before everything went CGI) and coincidentally the first two (and last two) good Nic Cage movies...
-
It seemed like he lost something after the 80s tho. His movies in that era had a certain mood and vibe to them. Kinda like an air of paranoia. You can sense it in Halloween, The Thing, They Live, etc. Even in comedies like Big Trouble in Little China. Haven't really cared for his stuff since then. (Never saw Mouth of Madness tho.)
-
The last watchable thing he did was In the Mouth of Madness. That had some genuine jolts. He's been on a cold streak for like 12 years. Most of his latter day work looks really cheap and shot very bland.
-
Cage needs to slow down a little. He's churning shit out left and right. It's truly amazing how good he can be in the right material (Adaptation, Matchstick Men, LLV) and how bad he can be in most of his other work.
-
...I'm intrigued.
-
I remember being excited to watch Ghosts of Mars on video -- it was being marketed as a sci fi Rio Bravo directed by John Carpenter...Cool Right? The reality was it had terrible acting, a terrible script, terrible special effects and terrible sets. Maybe Carpenter can recapture the brilliance of The Thing and his many other classics, but I doubt it.
-
And to think we keep saying Hollywood is out of original ideas.
-
that is all.
-
Maybe Cage will get spooked and his hair piece will fly off. That will be in the deleted scenes of the DVD.
-
Insert prison rape joke here.
-
Admit it.. Carpenter hasn't done ONE really good movie since Big Trouble.
-
Thats about the only thing nowdays that can be executed safely without a major screw up. Sadly it's gone out of fashion.
-
Man that movie was epic. Couple the badass long hair with Cage's accent and you got gold right there, unintentionally funny, but still it was entertaining....and certainly better than anything Michael Bay has made (except for The Rock).
-
go Mars!

Good Will Hunting Escapes From Prison of the Damned & The Thing
by maegnarval
That's what the movie sounds like.
-
Well, perhaps it'll be Scared Straight To DVD, where it'll be firmly nestled with Cthulhu Mansion and Solarbabies 2: Wheels of Fire. I can't imagine this being even remotely watchable. Ever sit through Carpenter's Children of the Damned? Heavens to betsy, what a disaster.
