A Spanish Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's CHE Surfaces!
Beaks here...
Want to see Steven Soderbergh's unexpurgated, four-and-a-half cut of CHE? Well, he'd really like to show it to you. Problem is, there's not a distributor in Hollywood ready to come to terms with the filmmaker - who, at present, is adamant that the two-part film screen in full (in very limited release) this December. After that, he'd like to release the first segment (THE ARGENTINE) in January, with the second chapter (GUERRILLA) to follow in February. Not helping his cause: the picture's mixed critical reception at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
While we're waiting for all of this to get cleared up (hopefully before the end of the year), a very grainy Spanish trailer has hit Yahoo!, and... I'll keep my opinion to myself on this one. I'm sure you will, too.
Regardless of what you think - politically or artistically - about Soderbergh's take on CHE (not that there's a whole lot to go on just yet), you have to admit that Benicio Del Toro's performance looks monumental enough to justify the sit. The man is genetically incapable of delivering an uninteresting performance (and, yes, that includes fucking EXCESS BAGGAGE, smartass).

I had to, I've never been first before. In fact, I've never been second or third... It's a banner day for me.
-
No thanks Beaks, I'm going to bed now. Bi xx
-
I hope this was a labor of love for all involved because I doubt anyone will pay to see this.
-
Looks like something I might check out, cabrones.

Without question my most awaited film for the rest of this year
by industrykiller!
you tell me where and when and I will be there with money clenched in my fist. You hear that studios?
-
I've been a Benicio fan since back when I had to explain to people who he was. And long movies don't bother me, so bring it on.
-
Steven Soderberg is Billy Walsh.
-
Che's still going to compete with our Oscar chances...LLOYD!!!!
-
I just hope Soderberg doesn't get all romantic and only shows us the heroic and idealist side of Che. I hope he portrays him for the cold blooded killer and sociopath that he was as well. As long as it's not some pro che/rage against the machine propaganda piece I'll gladly sit for 4 plus hours.
-
I don't know about that. In fact, I disagree. But cold-blooded killer - yep.
-
was in Spanish, 3 hours long and did poorly at Cannes. At one point Benicio Del Toro was attached to play Pablo Escobar before the role went to Vincent Chase. E did not like the film.
-
Substitute Pablo Escobar for Che Guevara and everything else matches up. Life imitates art.
-
Benicio Del Toro should get more leading roles. I'm gonna need a pillow.
-
I don't know enough Español to translate, but the images were right in line with what I expected. Do I want to sit in a theater for four and a half hours? No way. Give me two separate films, then let me buy the whole enchilada (pun intended) on DVD.
-
Ahhahahahaha, ahahahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAha hahahaha hahaha HAHAHAHA shit.
Bring on the neocon criticisms. -
He was hairy and liked the color red (as in little red riding). And just like a Commie, he was a wolf in sheep's clothing.
-
unless you've no clue, then it will both suck and blow.
-
if this is show all together... four hours long in normal theaters... I might actually go see it.
-
By his own account the dude had 2,500 people killed without so much as a hint of due process after the Cuban revolution, and those are the ones he mentions himself. His office had a window which faced the wall where the executions were happening. I think this takes our boy Che into sociopath territory.
-
always give his films a chance. they aren't for everyone, but F' everyone under an IQ of 90 anyways..
-
...but my parents are from Cuba and my grandparents experienced this history in this 2 part film so I am definitely interested in watching it...I like Soderbergh's movies/style and it looks like he's getting it alright...I just hope he doesn't sugar coat anything or make the guy look like some kind of hero when he really wasn't. It's like that trip that came out not too long ago that Robert Redford was involved with...I hate Redford and I cannot stand it when these loony ultra left-wing people try to put their exaggerated revisionist stamp on people and events in history. Definitely checking it out though, Del Toro's performance alone should warrant the ticket and or DVD price.
-
but the trailer looks athentic to the period. Del Toro's definitely got the look of Che down. I hope it's a good film.
-
if they're on dvd. I'll wait for the two-parter.
-
Hilarious, he was watchable.
-
Hasn't made a good film since the first Ocean's. The Good German was a total bore.
-
Except put them in a serious heist drama with David Holmes doing the score and Soderberg directing and you'd have Soderberg's missed oppertunity. What a waste of talent those sequels were.
-
Agree to cut the film into two parts, under the stipulation that one shall be converted to black and white and the other into VistaVision.

For those of you hoping Che isnt portrayed as a hero,,,
by virtual_ninja
Judging from the last half of that trailer, most of the dialogue that was said was praising Che and showing him as a kind and loving man. That bieng said, looks like Benecio nailed the part, even his accent is pretty spot on, a lot better than his spanish in traffic, I might check this out.

::crosses fingers::
-
Shit, you think Che shirts are popular amongst shit for brains teenagers NOW....
-
But he should not be portrayed as a sociopath either, or rather, he should be portrayed honestly and the brutal acts he is responsible for should be shown along side the heroic acts he was responsible for. Castro and Che won Cuba for a reason - the US supported a brutal right wing regime that oppressed its people (what a novelty in Latin America) and allowed the mob to do whatever it wanted.
I don't believe in deifying or demonizing, just let the facts speak for themselves. This is something I find everyone has a hard time doing. If I listen to one more simple-minded conservative say that Reagan won the Cold War, I am going to reverse my stance on gun control. -
Yes a left wing dictatorship that oppresses and brutalizes it's people is so much better ....
-
I don't care who you make a movie about. Just don't make this guy a hero. He wasn't. He was a friggin coward and murderer. Show his true colors and I don't care, glorify him and it is just typical liberal Hollywood shite.
-
Ocean's Thirteen made way over 300 mil worldwide...thus TRIPLING its budget...but that's not really important. since you seem to be wearing your dunce cap tight enough that you want an amazing director to voluntarily reduce himself to the same crap that everyone else is making.
ll make Bad Boys 3 for you soon enough...
-
Hi. Did you know that America is an evil thug? Did you know that Che Guevara is an icon of purity, truth, and justice? You may be surprised to find that the world is that simple, but guess what: It is!!! Act now, and you'll also receive a plush tote back and a signed copy of my new coffee table book: "Che Guevara was in no way a fascist who personally presided over firing squads and called for the Soviets to nuke the US: And other observations."
-
Can't wait for O14, because Brad Pitt and George Clooney seem to have so much fun bantering with one another. Gosh, they're so good looking, charming, and witty. So many celebrities galore, all in one movie! Plus, the b-list members of the Ocean gang are such an eclectic mix of ne'er do wells whose talents round each other out so well. I can't wait to see which new A-lister they add to the cast next time!!!!
-
That f-ing Soderbergh can go to f with poop and doodoo! Cause everyone knows he's just an f and a doodoo head and anyone who thinks differently should go to f.
-
What I could make out due to poor audio up to 1:14.
"Our struggle is a struggle to the death."
Exchange b/w Che with Guy asking Che is he wants a cigar? Che says he's plans on doing something and I can make this out:
Che: "You think I'm crazy?"
Guy: "A little."
BENICIO DEL TORO...CHE
In a field talking to his men: "A people who cannot read or write is a people who can be easily deceived."
Che to guy on street: "This is a revolution not a coup d'État"
vamos a asegurar la ciudad barrio por barrio y calle por calle.
Random general: "We will secure the city, neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street."
The revolution begins now
BEYOND THE MYTH THERE WAS A MAN

I have really been looking forward to this since that picture of Del Toro as Che a few months (maybe a year?) back. Benicio Del Toro is easily one of the greatest actors of the last decade and I am excited for this, but the trailer was a little cliche and didn't get me as pumped as I had hoped it would. still, I would sit through a four hour movie. Why not? This has the potential to be an incredible movie.

~~~THIS YEAR'S LITTLE MISS BEARDED GUERILLA!~~~
by the marquis de side 3
The film will be a masterpiece and be a financial flop at the same time. oh well... nothing a few CGI robots can't fix right? we could just "retcon" those into Che's history...
So, just because Che and Castro took over Cuba and took out the terrible right-wing regime, that makes them some kind of fucking saints? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Castro did such an ace job on Cuba that there are still people dying on makeshift boats while trying to escape from that fucking place? I know they have universal healthcare and great schools, but why do we then have Cubans dying to get out of there and into US? I'm from Russia and I lived in a socialist country. Socialism is a horror the likes of which no one should ever have to experience. It might have been a neat idea when Marx drafted his manifesto, but the reality is that nothing but death and misery and oppression comes from socialism. So, it ain't like what Castro and Che did for Cuba was anything to get all misty-eyed about.
On the other hand, Soderberg is a genius and Del Toro is one too. Soderberg takes awesome chances and even his failures dwarf other people's best work. Solaris was brilliant and so was Schizoplois and Limey. And both got shit on by critics and audiences. His visual sense is astonishing and I've yet to see anything from him that wasn't captivating in cinematic terms.
I just wish he shot all of the film in black and white, because it would suit the subject much more and the shots i the trailer that are in b&w look incredibly cool.
And of course Del Toro looks frighteningly like Che. A few times in the trailer I thought they mixed in real footage of Che.
Of course, Che was a brutal killer and does not deserve the adulation of brainless teenagers and college students. But he was a human being, flaws and all, and lived a very fascinating life. So, I hope that Soderberg can be as cool and analytical as he usually is with this movie. Personally I can't wait to see it. -
Maybe not the best choice? Having said that, I have a lot of respect for Soderbergh and will see anything he's attached to.
-
There was a film that stayed true to the facts about Franz Kafka's life and didn't make shit up for dramatic effect. Oh, wait...Actually, Kafka was a pretty fucking great Gothic Noir. I just hope Che contains crazy mutated monster men and a secret society hell-bent on controlling the population through mind control. 'Cause that would be sweet.
-
I think they're using voice overs. Del Toro is good but to pull that voice off he'd have to learn perfect Spanish, then adopt an Argentinian accent, and then adopt a higher pitch.
Mysterious Yobo: start listening to cliches and catch phrases th
by docbosch
Yeah, because doing his own thing, despite what everybody else thinks, has never worked out for Soderbergh. He mad Sex Lies, and it was relatively huge. But instead of going onto bigger, more high profile films, he made a black and white surrealistic period biopic and a non-sensical self financed comedy starring himself. I once read an article from the mid-90s which pretty much summed up as "What ever happened to Steven Soderbergh?" Then out of nowhere he made a couple of crime movies that were popular, then went on to direct two back to back films that got nominated for best picture and director at the same time. After winning an Oscar he makes a mainstream film filled with movies stars, followed up by a tiny-budget, improvised indie shot on video. So I don't think he has the same concern for the type of success validation that you do. I think he's done well doing pretty much what he feel like doing. Which makes him my favorite filmmaker, even though I can't say I like all of his films.
-
I live in New Jersey. Film looks good though. I love Benicio Del Toro and always sign credit card recipts with 'Che Guevara'. Two films? Bring ‘em on.
-
Visually Benicio looks more the part than he did in the early pictures; initially I thought he was too weatherbeaten for Che, who - despite your political leanings - was a handsome bugger when he was younger. So I'm optimistic, but I do hope it's gonna walk a balanced line. All significant historical figures have their light and dark sides after all.
-
Benicio has been practicing his spanish, in Traffic he was really bad. Portraying a mexican with an accent nowhere to be found here in mexico
-
i have seen the movie and is his voice all way down. the accenst are not always spot on, but it is quite amazing anyway the performance. The movie is not quite pro Che but definitely is not against him.
-
I've been dying for a real Soberbergh movie for f'ing years! I've got nothing against the Ocean movies and I appreciate what he was tyring to do with Bubble but I want something epic, with substance!
-
...are missing the point. No, a left-wing dictatorship is no better than a right-wing one, but why should one have to choose between one or the other? The point made was that America's propping up of the Batista regime made it easier for left-wing extremists to curry favor among the oppressed in Cuba. If America had pressured Batista for human rights in Cuba and encouraged democratic opposition, it would have been that much harder for scumbags like Castro and Che to take over.
This isn't rocket science, you know. -
Soderbergh admitted he hated being in the "arthouse ghetto"
by jackrabbitslim
The quote was up on IMDB for a longtime - I'm sure its still there. Ya gotta wonder about a big-budget movie with a big name director that can get no kind of distribution deal in USA. Was it the IMDB that quoted a studio exec saying he hadn't seen the market dry up for indies since 1979-80-81 when the auteurs all flamed out? And Spielberg looking to India-based financiers to bail DreamWorks out? Things are looking dire...
-
Either the film is steaming poo or ... the risk-aversion playing out in Hollywood has gotten to the point it wont touch anything that isn't a sure thing or at the least a safe thing. This is going to end up at some tiny indie - ThinkFilm or Magnolia or somesuch. Look at Netflix's indie boutique - bellyup in less than two years. And that rash of failures of the Iraq-war-themed-movies I'm sure didn't help either.
-
He seems like such an intense young man. What is he so upset about? And why are all the teenagers wearing t-shirts of him? And putting posters on the walls of their dormitory rooms? And drinking out of coffee mugs with his face on them? And lunchboxes, and exercise bicycles, and toaster-ovens, and lampshades, and porcelain busts... etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam...
-
And the line spoken in the trailer (in Spanish): "A country that doesn't know how to read or write, is a country that's easy to fool", gave me hope the movie would show him in an accurate light. But then it got all wishy-washy sentimental at the end. Hopefully, this won't be some biased left-wing interpretation of Che, but I'm still interested in seeing it. It looks like Del Toro will give a hell of a performance.
-
You give a man an oscar for best director over MARTIN-FUCKIN'-SCORCESE!!! Come back to earth, Steve. Before it's too late.
-
cold blooded killer and sociopath in a way that burst communist propaganda?
Otherwise, this film is a non-issue. -
