More On TR2N's Res-Up!!
Merrick here...
Jim Hill Media, one stop shopping for all news Disney, has posted an interesting piece about the behind-the-scenes creative/political machinations driving the development of TR2N.
Two points of interest include:
-- John Lasseter's enthusiasm for the project (although many in the studio aren't convinced a TRON sequel shuod be attempted, or would pay off);
-- Eddie Kitsis & Adam Horovitz (both producers and writers on LOST and FELICITY among many credits) have been brought in to script the project - effectively overturning a long-in-development script, designs, etc. by Steven Lisberger, writer/director of the original TRON.
The assignment of new writers had been mentioned before if I'm not mistake, although the jettisoning of Lisberger's material hasn't been mentioned to the best of my knowledge.
There's a lot fo cool stuff in the article, including link-outs to various media generated by TR2N director Joseph Kosinski (some of which has appeared on AICN previously); it'll give you a good sense of how he'll approach the "look" of the film.

so they made that little teaser, hired jeff bridges and all and disney still may not make it? pointless much.
-
Robert Foyst...my favorite writer of all time
-
So is this thing even been written yet? Was the teaser to just get a judge of interest??
-
. . . he's an inglorious bastard.
-
In this day and age of DVD releases, studios can make sequels to movies that most people never saw originally in the theater. Plus, Jeff Bridges is still a known, working actor, and his box office cred is probably pretty decent thanks to Iron Man and The Big Lebowski. Disney should remaster the original TRON and give it a limited-run release in arthouse theaters, and tack on a sneak preview of TR2N to it.
-
2 Tron 2 Furious would be a less stupid title.
-
It's freakin' TRON 2, all right? I don't care how the title sounds like "Netspeak" or whatever you want to call it, from this point on, anyone who refers to this as TR2N deserves to be smacked upside the crainium with a sledgehammer. No, make that 2 sledgehammers in keeping with the title.
Oh, and "SE7EN" is just SEVEN in case you were wondering. Rant over.

Bring on the TR2N.

I peed a little when the trailer showed Jeff Bridges / Flynn

Just sayin'

Disney's shriveled balls about releasing this (especially considering what they probably dumped into Beverly Hills Purse-Rat) are not only frustrating, they're misguided. It's guaranteed a big first weekend on the geek buck. Now, it may or may not drop heavily, but then you get to double-dip the original on DVD when TR2N (ugh) is released (not to mention a super-hyped Blu-Ray) and then double dip with a box-set when the sequel hits disc as well. And then...there's merchandising. The market for TRON merchandising could be massive, and not just video games. The toys alone would be a windfall, particularly if, again, they tie in the old movie and release a wave of updated toys from the original TRON. It's a fucking CASH COW waiting to be milked, butchered, and tossed on the grill. Eyes on the prize, assholes!

...How do you even pronounce "Tr2n"? Truh-toon?
-
... operating systems and name it after a large feline animal. Coming summer 2010... "Ocelot"!

us geeks should be happy. spyboy, get a room
-
I can not wait for this movie. It looks totally amazing. Seems this Kozinski guy has the right eye for it too. Cause lets face it, the visuals are the most important. Actually, the talk of making the story more complex worries me; I don't want them to crawl up their own assess like was done with the Matrix sequels. I think it should be kept simple.
-
Fact.
-
Although, fans would be asking for TRON XP instead of because it actually works, even though technical support has been officially discontinued.
-
Returning from a long hiatus. And I get back to hear about a Tron sequel?! Holy fuck. No other studio had better release an animated movie that summer, 'cause they'll get CRUSHED.
Lasseter and his team had better work long and hard handling this baby just right. Cause this is, like, the Holy Grail of computer animation. The one that started it all. Some respect needs to be paid to this material.
And to all those "TR2N" title haters...I don't know. I was a little jarred by it when I first saw that trailer, but I have to admit it's grown on me. The name will probably change before the release, but damn, it's got some attitude.
End of line. -
Please don't fuck this up!
-
works. Or Tron: Reboot would be better.

Seriously.

More like Johnny Mnemonic... Fuck this crap.

Then we had titles like Thirthirteenen Ghosts. But Trtwon seriously sucks as a title.

this was a possible title I heard....

Oh, how you children of the 90's have been deluded into thinking certain cheesey movies of the 70's and 80's were worthy of praise!
Tron was a cornball movie when it came out. It was cheesey. Anyone who was brave enough to admit they liked it never knew what the scent of a girl was like. Same for the Jason movies. They were in the same category as the "Speed Racer" cartoon. When "Tron 2" flops, people will stay away in droves... just like The Wachowski's "Speed Racer". -

Fuck you and your criticism of children of the 90s.
by one nation under zod
I was born in 1980 and I take unbrage, sir. However I agree with you that this movie will suck a fat dick and fail at the box office like Jimmy Carter and George W Bush failed us as president.
-
A child of the 80's still had no idea what the consensus of opinion of "Tron" and other films of that decade were like. Just because you plyed with your own poo in the early 80's means your opinion of when those movies came out is relevant.

it shouldnt be called "TR2N", and they should let Lisberger make
by jimmyjoe redsky
im sick of marketing assholes trying to be clever by masshing nimbers into film titles or abbreviated film titles - just call it "TRON 2" or "TRON:(fill in this blank with somethng)" - and what was so wrong with lisberger's ideas - i trust the original's creator to do this justice more than the guys from "lost" and some video director who's only visible strength is cgi rendering - i blame pixar doosh lasseter - biggest fan my ass - he isnt a fan of the movie "TRON", just it's fx - tron rules - its the star wars of the 1980s - the story, acting and writing didnt fall short - they made it the classic it is - most of these "fans" only connected to the look and fx - dorks - and to those that think tron is "horrible" or a bad sci fi movie, in order to really have gotten it or been affected by it you had to have seen it when you were in high school (like i was in 1982) - it might appear silly now to some, but it was groundbreaking and unlike anything else - it was and is still, perfect - the perfect marriage of story and cutting edge movie making tech
-
For anyone who liked the original film. All you putzes complaining about this who didn't like the first, go piss in someone else's cornflakes, will ya? Go back to watching the fucking Matrix trilogy. Bridges is back, and they're going to do something innovative with the visuals. I can't wait.
-
I was a child of both the 80s and 90s and frankly, we have a better appreciation for what constitutes quality film then you ever could understand. I challenge you to present YOUR supposedly superior decade of development.
-
I'm sure it came out a while back
-
first of all, what is a "doosh"??? Do you mean "douche"?
secondly, Tron was not the Star Wars of the 80's. STAR WARS was the Star Wars of the 80's. Empire and Jedi were both 80's films, and both were far better and dominant than Tron.I like Tron... a lot... and I am excited to see a new one. Though I for one am glad to see new blood brought in. I DO think they should involve Lisberger in its story, development, etc, but I do not want him alone writing and directing. Something tells me his sensibilities would be too nostalgic and outdated. -
I was really hoping that they would get Lisberger back--but, maybe the director could make some inroads with him, and please Lassiter at the same time.
When you stop and think how much information and entertainment (as well as personal blogs and communication) is online and in the "electronic world" now, it will be really interesting to see how the world is different in this one. Kind of a fusion between the first Tron and the Matrix.
I am psyched and totally there, first day, midnight screening. -
I'm waiting, doosh.

Yes, it has been confirmed. As talented a comic his father was, as well as possesing charisma & great likability, that is how untalented, unlikable and uncharismatic Freddie Prinze Jr. is. Our sources are saying there is a good chance that he must have been adopted.

Yes, the Tron 2 video game was actually GOOD. Great story.
by pixelsmack
Had Bruce in it and had a pretty could story arc. Not just for a game but for a film too. I look at the Tron 2 video game as the real sequel. Anything new should be stand alone or a...here comes the pun...."a reboot".
Also the video game sequel to THE THING was rather good. Gameplay and story wise. -
Fah-Cue: Sure, you may not have liked the story or the actors or whatever, but c'mon man. You've gotta give props to the vision and execution behind the original Tron.
ANY time a new boundary is crossed, you've gotta acknowledge the accomplishment. You might not agree that the first book to ever roll off the printing press - the Guttenberg Bible - was a bestseller, but you've got to acknowledge it shifted everyone's idea about how information could be reproduced and disseminated.
Flying on Boeing's Dreamliner might be a million times better than what the Wright Brothers did at Kitty Hawk, but for the love of God, please acknowledge that they made an impact on modern travel.
Tron, shit or not, was a breakthrough. No one had thought something like that was possible before the guys involved put their balls to the wall and just did it. And keep in mind, this was a good decade before what anyone would consider "modern" 3D software came out. These dudes entered millions of XYZ co-orinates BY HAND.
Oh, and don't bother trying to argue about how significant Tron was. Cause I've got JOHN FUCKING LASSETER on my side. Booya!!!!! -
Tron becomes just another property then. They might as well call it "Tron 2: Return to Neverland".
-
do I have to keep feeding quarters into my theater seat?
-
I concur. How can you do Tron 2 without Steven Lisberger?!
-
How do you make paragraphs in a talkback?
-
Ever since I was a little kid. I knew everyone else would catch up eventually. Felt the same way about BLADE RUNNER. Always loved it even though it was panned and bombed. The same thing is going to happen with SPEED RACER. After it hits dvd, everyone is going to realize they totally missed it, and will start singing its praises. Then all of these reviewers will make a dramatic about face and completely alter their opinions. Watch.

not 2009?

Tron was never considered a masterpiece, not even today....
by jak0lantern01
But, with that being said, it is still a damn cool movie. It's also a bit incomplete, I believe. If you listen to the audio commentary on the 2-disc DVD set, there's a blurb about not having enogh time or money or something to shoot additional footage that would have added to the story. Sure, it's a bit corny, but it was way ahead of its time and looks awesome. Bring a sequel, BABY! Just make sure we get Flynn back in action.
-
...Tron got a very lukewarm reception but oddly enough as neons and pastels got huge in the 80s a couple of years later, Tron continued to look cooler and cooler. Couple that with a great arcade game and the rise of the home computer, and Tron became part of the culture. It's more iconic than anything else. All that being said, I still consider it a pretty enjoyable film.
And Dredd, they've got to get him involved. I'm really surprised that Lassiter would back the project without Lisberger. *Really* surprised (and disappointed). -

I heard somewhere that Jessica Chobot from IGN pitched a sequel idea to the director of TRON while she was interviewing him for the DVD release, and he loved it and supposedly they went on to write the screenplay together based on that idea. Is there any evidence for this? Because that's pretty crazy. Wikipedia says it's being written by some writer from Lost. Not sure which I prefer.

Its simple -
They are now refusing to use the script of Tron's original writer/director and are bringing in a first time director and the writers of that horrible tv show Lost??? I am suddenly not interested in this movie. If they were smart they'd bring in a director like Brad Bird...and Joss Whedon to do the script, and or, to direct. The direction they are now choosing has the words "Bomb!" and "So what!" written all over it. What a major disappointment after the promising trailer shown at Comic-Con!!!
-
That actually sounds like something she would do aswell during an interview.
Woman has no shame.
Didnt she try something like that with Chris Nolan aswell? -
Joss Whedon are you having a fucking laugh.
I never get the love people give him, seems rather akin to how trekkies adore the Shat even though every other person on the planet thinks hes a cunt.

He's going to end up fucking up everything.

For loving Tron, I saw it in the theaters when it came out, and it's still a favorite of mine today. To anybody who says children of the 70's or 80's or anything else doesn't know movies....FUCK YOU ASSHOLES....we learned to appreciate movies that had good acting and good storytelling long before film became dominated by CGI , no story and bad acting. I personally cannot wait for Tron 2, I will be there opening night along with all of my fellow Tron geeks.
-
The teaser was so good I pulled out the DVD and watched it a few days ago. Man, what a good movie.
*
I agree that there's probably middle ground between ditching Steve Lisberger and letting him direct that they could have landed on. Just because they don't like his story doesn't mean they have to toss out every single design idea and story point that he had. Additionally, I also agree that "TR2N" is just a visual thing and that it is not READ like that, it's called TRON 2. -
Both Spanish and Disk Operating System. It's a 2fer!
-
Oh yeah, I went there.
-
...or Tron Service Pack 2, lol.
-
it can be found at http://gordonhikara.blogspot.com
-
who cares about calling it 'TR2N'? yeah, they jammed the 2 in there. oh well. (although you know they debated between T2ON & TR2N of a while.) and truthfully, i like tron, but the weakest part about it is the script, they have a great concept and special effects for the time, but so much more could have happened if the script was a little better, so i dont mind if they bring on some new blood and drop the script thats been bouncing around.25 years of advances in CGI should be fun to watch. Get a great group of CGI techs together, tell them to go nuts, and the end result might be some nice eye candy. (say what you will about speed racer, it was nice eye candy)who left all this butter here?
-
I've been waiting for a sequel to tron for decades! I hope it's done well. I was a young lad when the 1st came out and enjoyed it, I was an arcade junkie so it really appealed to me. I miss the old arcade days.. oh well I can't wait to see how this movie turns out.
End of line.. -
99% of the time Jim Hill Media is wrong.....
-
did you watch that youtube video of the person jimhill said is going to direct this? (Joseph Kosinski- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM0tnA8M6zI ) I'd like to see him let loose on a tron sequel.
-
It looks like "TR2N" in the titles because the "2" is standing in for the letter "O" in the word "TRON". If you've seen the way the font looks, the "2" looks like the letter "O" while also saying the number "2". It's just a clever illusion for the font. THAT'S ALL IT IS. IT'S CALLED "TRON 2" on all the official paperwork. It's not that difficult people.
Btw....Tron 2 looked AWESOME! This is the type of film that ACTUALLY deserves a sequel! As to people who complain about sequels.....shut up! Without sequels we would of never gotten "The Empire Strikes Back", "Aliens", "The Godfather pt.2". And to the people who complain about Remakes....I don't know about you, but I thought "The Dark Knight" was a dam fine REMAKE of a batman film.

Word is internally- they are not sure what to do with this movie and it's a subject of major executive-level debate. 2ron is way better, but will the programs meet pop-ups and porno on their travels to the net? how about any online games? the games we have now (Halo, WoW, CoD, etc) are A LOT different then the games back then...plus the characters looks like real people, even in the games, whereas back then a videogame-man WAS a little pink+blue fella. And a tank did look like ice tongs...wonder how it will update...
-
I second the sentiment above - if Obadiah is in, I'm there!

Joss Whedon is a great writer specializing in plot and dialogue...as well, he is a master
at defining a character's psychology and setting-up conflicts between protagonists and antagonists and reasons for us to care. The original Tron had its problems, yes...it was missing these very important things. For a quick tutorial in Joss Whedon's abilities I'll refer you to Serenity and Dr. Horrible. The reason I recommended Joss for this project, is his past work with Pixar on Toy Story, and his knowledge of the science fiction, speculative science, action/adventure and fantasy/horror genres.Brad Bird of course, has been looking for a live action project for sometime now...and did great work with Ratatouille and The Incredibles...thus he knows his computer graphics, he is great with story plotting, and finding his characters. This just seems the perfect blend of talent.BTW, after Buffy ended, Disney/ABC and JJ Abrams went head hunting and raided Whedon's production company for writers, producers and other creative talent...some of which now work on Lost as writers and producers!!! So why go to a watered down talent pool, and instead just go to the man who made these folks who they are in the first place, that being Joss Whedon himself??? Enough said!!! -
I'm fuckin' boycotting.

Is that you Joss....? hated Alien4 that is all.
-
i know what a douche is - i spelled it like it sounds - tron was the SW of the 1980s in the sense that it was something new that no one had seen before - like SW in 1977 - problem was it was too different - it has its fans and it did well for the time, but it didnt stick or have the same mass appeal as SW - my gripe is that im suspicious of disney shutting lisberger out - "we can handle this better than you, we will fix it" - bs - im quite familiar with kosinski - hes a big name in branding and advertising - and his reel is impressive - he certainly knows his way around a computer and architectural renderings - but this isnt a car commercial - why not give such a big tent pole to a name-director - in the old days first-timers cut their teeth on smaller fare - this is the guy that got logans run too - the new logans run where the future utopia is occupied by teens - renewal is now 21 not 30 - i guess 30 is like really old now - but i digress - im a big TRON fan - even when it wasnt cool - not that it is now - i hope this isnt an opurtunity wasted just to cash in - the original had heart and lasting appeal - the sequel has a lot to live up to beyond just great visuals - making a good looking movie is no big deal anymore - but just making a good movie (or sequel/retread) is a real feat

Medicinaluser-All The Alien Sequels-Save 4 One, Sucked!!!!
by media messiah
Alien 4, I am told sucked...and from the clips I have seen, I would agree...but all of the Alien sequels have sucked, save for Aliens. That said, according to Joss Whedon, the studio and the director of Alien 4 altered his script...something they haven't denied, and is openly known in Hollywood. Now I recall, David Fincher directed Alien 3 and that got bad reviews also. Flash forward many years later, and Fincher is now considered a genius, thanks to his other films!!!!Joss has acted as script doctor for the movie Speed (his work credited for its success), Toy Story (uncredited), and he has produced, written and directed the best episodes of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. In addition, Joss has directed two episodes of The Office, the movie Serenity, and Dr. Horrible...with Dollhouse due to debut in 2009. So...if you wish to attack him for writing a bad Alien film, that is fair, but as I said, David Fincher suffered those same attacks and he was the director of Alien 3...and made the movie that he wanted to make from beginning to end...however, Joss acted as a writer and was shut-out of the creative process of Alien 4 after the script was turned in...one of which I'll remind you once more, Joss has argued that, to his dismay, his script and dialogue was altered thanks to 'The Powers That Be'...something not one of them has publicly disputed...hence, I don't think it fair to attack a writer who's work was horribly tampered with. Lastly, if you are going to blame Joss for one failure, then by that same rule, you then must blame him for the success of Speed and toy Story, etc.
-
who is "we"? - 20-somethings? - there are more (and better) film makers my age than your age - go shove an i-phone up your ass - you probably hate king kong (1933) too - because its black and white and everyone talks funny - punk

ages 10-30 are going, "Huh? Tron? Wuh?"
I agree with you, M-O-M, and I said something like that in an earlier post, how TRON was cool in 1982 because nobody'd seen anything like it, nobody saw an artistic rendition of what computer programs could be, and how they behave. Back then, PCs were still relatively new to the masses. In fact, I don't even think the evil applications were referred to as "viruses" in the movie. They were simply bad "programs" with evil "users" -
My boy is 8, and loves a game called GLTron (not even Tron 2.0) that he plays at school, and loved the movie. I didn't introduce him to Tron, he found it himself, and he's super excited about this. I'm not saying that because a bunch of kids at one school love Tron that proves anything more than a subjective assertion. Just saying, because you DID say "ALL young people". And are therefore proved wrong to that extent at least. Cheers.

Amen, G.O.T.

Yeah I can count, but I assumed you meant anyone under 30, INCLUDING under 10, or is there a giant under-10 fanbase I don't know of?

My friends and I would pretend we lived in Tronworld and throw frisbees at each other. It was great. We tried to use our bikes to do light cycles, but after I crashed my bike into one of my friends and ripped a gnarly gash in his leg, that part of the game came to a swift halt. He didn't de-rez all cool or nothing, he just started screaming and crying and had to get stitches. It was then that I realized that the real world blows.

If so, that's cool. I'm not into video games, and thus forgot that TRON may have had a culture there over these years. I tried to get my 9-year old daughter to watch TRON with me just last year, but she lost interest after a while, which was unusual, given that she usually digs dad's geek movies

I like/love Joss, and someone like Spielberg should be working with him...but yes, Buffy and Angel weren't always great...they had their bad episodes, just like they had truly great episodes...but I always appreciated Whedon for daring to experiment and taking many risks with those episodes good or bad...like the episode "Hush" with mostly no dialogue..."The Body" with strange editing and silences all in reaction to a shocking death (probably the best episode of any show ever on television), then there is Objects in Space...the last episode on Firefly...where a cruel villain asks the female ship's mechanic whether or not she has been raped before...and promises a horrible experience for her if she doesn't assist him, or the killer puppets from the children's show episode of Angel. And lastly, Dr. Horrible...the first two episodes were a fun gem...and then Whedon decided to make a statement that he could be a cruel God with his characters...well, it worked...but it hurt a fun entertainment and turned it too serious. I think Whedon was trying to show would-be critics that he isn't always fun or fuzzy. Long time fans know that, but that ending was meant for others and it lowered the overall proceedings, sort of like having Cinderella brutally raped by the handsome Prince at the ball when the clock turns to midnight. Sometimes to me, it is just better to have a happy ending, I mean, that is what movies and television are made for, because real life is often too much to bear, the reason I prefer escapism. As for Whedon and Alien 4...I just refreshed my memory by reading a post on the internet via Wikipedia. Joss said that they changed his ending. He also said, to be accurate, they didn't so much as change his script but they changed the interpretation, they changed the tone of dialogue and the way it was to be delivered, they changed the tone of the action and mood of the piece, as well, they horribly miscast the movie. He was in full agreement with you that it was a bad film, and called the movie "ghastly"...his words.
-
Looks so much better than TR2N.
-
No: you meant to attack Zod. He's the one who claims the 20-something crowd had better movies under their belt. Yeah, right. Maybe PORN movies.
