Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince trailer is creepy cool!

Published at:  Jul 30, 2008 1:54:25 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... You know - watch this trailer... how creepy is that lil' boy evil bastard? I mean just within the trailer there's more menace and foreboding than in the entirety of the whole Anakin tale. I get that George wanted to show a good boy gone bad, but he ultimately didn't nail that transition - and I think it is because we all knew he was gonna be Darth Vader from the get go, so the whole time he's good, we know he's gonna be bad and what we love about Darth Vader is just how bad he is. And Lucas basically took that away from the character by pansification. Whereas here - we all know this boy is going to become the personification of evil and within a trailer - they've caused my neck hairs to stand on end and I'm looking for the sacred seven daggers and watching out for sheet glass. Check it out for yourself. This is looking great!

    by flickchick85

And probably this movie. But it is undeniably a well-done teaser all-around. I liked Yates's take on the series, and now with Bruno Delbonnel shooting it, they might FINALLY nail the tone of this book. I'm totally hyped for this now.

saving a fucking trailer? It looks gorgeous in 1080p, and I'd play it over and over again, and be excited enough to pay for tickets to see the movie... see how that works, shitheads?

Or did I miss the bit where there was a huge black market selling movie trailers and undercutting the cinematic release? Because wasting hundreds of megs of my monthly bandwidth reloading for no good reason really makes me love it even more... Fuckwits.

    by hooded justice

Now, why didn't you say that in your reviews - instead of giving Lucas a free pass, not to mention duping unsuspecting readers?Of course, anyone who's seen the 'making of' DVD for The Phantom Menace will know that they DID audition a kid who was PERFECT for the role of Anakin Skywalker. Listen to this:He LOOKED like a young Mark Hamill - but arguably with more screen presence. He had a slightly sinister demeanour - whilst at the same time being vulnerable. You kind of feared him - and feared FOR him at the same time. The kid could go either way - to the dark or the light. His line readings were so good that he made Lucas' dialogue sound GOOD.And he communicated all this in a ten-second clip they show on the DVD.But Lucas picked Jake Lloyd instead! The horror, the horror.

    by mr gorilla

IMHO the Harry Potter books are OK but not all that. (Pullman's books are much better.) And the first two films are fun but definitely kids' films. But, post Azkaban, the people behind the series have turned the whole thing round for the better. Look at most other film franchises (X-Men, Spider-Man etc) and you'll see how difficult it is to maintain quality. These guys, somehow, are doing it. GREAT WORK. (Guys behind Batman seem to be doing same thing too...)

    by photobooth11

The ginny in the reeds scene was a new scene written for the movie that takes place at the burrow. David Barron, the producer, talked about it months ago in an interview with an Australian newspaper. They added it to give a sense of the impending war, which you really never feel in the book until the last few chapters. You can google it if you want to read the spoiler.

I may be mistaken but I believe he gets the name Voldemort from an anagram. Not sure though. I enjoy the books, despite myself. They get increasingly better as the children get older. More adult themed. I can see why some would not get into them though. Just the hysteria associated with them is enough to make one gag. but if you can look beyond the hype they really are quite engaging.

Half-blood is great, but the last book is boring, rambling, and full of loose ends that never get tied up. A BIG letdown. I'm just making sure everyone is aware of what they're setting themselves up for. Unless some major changes happen between book and movie, this is the last good HP film.

Harldy boring. the story and ending are epic. i'll admit there's a little too much camping in the woods in the middle but the book is solid. The two-part movie ending is the best decision they could make. The Battle of Hogwarts could be it's own movie.

...these films have continually disappointed me. I can't put my faith in any more promising HARRY POTTER trailers At least, this kid appears to be interesting in a dark, twisted way - more interesting than Potter himself, who's always been a boring character.

    by samuellappdance

Rather than talk substantively about "Harry Potter," you just take a random swing at everyone's favorite geekboy punching bag, the "Star Wars" prequels, to win back some street cred among the Lucas haters. First, the "Indy 5" quotes post stoking the haters and whiners and now this? Did someone at the Ranch has pissed you off this week? What happened? Share. And quick point. Had Anakin been this brooding, bad-from-birth kid who Qui-Gonn discovered in a junkyard already Force-choking people for kicks, the Jedi Council would never have agreed to train him.

I'm wary about Yates - I enjoyed OotP about as much as Goblet of Fire but damn, learn how to stage a fucking action sequence. The Department of Mysteries sequence was awful. But the trailer just focusing on Voldemort's origin was great, and creepy. Hope the movie lives up. Hope we finally get a GREAT Harry Potter movie.

    by oliviafarts

I completely agree with your assesement that the Ron and Hermione was forcefully shoved down my throat. I get the whole thing she wanted to accomplish with the "opposites attract" garbage, but seriously, in the books and in the movies, Ron and Hermione HAVE ZERO CHEMISTRY. In all the books the man Hermione stands by is Harry, even when Ron goes off on his tantrums - which he does in every damn book. For those who've only seen the movies, you'll never understand my complete frustration with the character of Ron Weasley who's a complete and total whiny, cry-baby. A girl as smart as Hermione really would never stoop so low as to date a dork like him. Now, to add insult to injury, Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have amazing chemistry together in the films and its no wonder those who aren't familiar with the books are soooo perplexed as to why Harry and Hermione aren't together. You can't count how many people scratched their head in watching OoTP and thought, when Harry hooked up with Cho, "huh, I always thought Harry and Hermione were a couple". Even the media and adverisements constantly show Harry and Hermione together, with Ron in the background. Yes, absolutely, JKR completely fucked up with her romantic pairings, especially of Harry with Hermione. This is something that, years from now, people will be chastising her about, even more so. Shit, at least there's the hope we'll see the hot and nasty Harry and Hermione fake make-out scene in Deathly Hallows. JKR, this non-pairing was your biggest mistake.

I beg to differ, at least for the books. It's pretty clear from the second book when Harry rescues Ginnie from the giant snake that they are meant to be together. And it's that way throughout the book as well for Hermione and Ron. I don't know where you get this "Hermione wouldn't stoop to Ron" stuff but Ron has the heart of a lion (even though they portray him much more as a cowardly fool in movies) and Hermione, to be perfectly honest, is a judgemental, know-it-all that few people could put up with for long. Ron knows this and calls her on it. He makes her a better person, as does she to him by getting him to stop being such a git all the time and realize some of his potential.

...for doing such a ridiculously OBVIOUS recycle job with the set prop design by taking the walls from the Ministry of Magic from the last movie and using them for this orphanage. When has there even been a Victorian interior that had tiling other than the underground? And why would a orphanage look THAT black and THAT scary in such a contrived way? I'm all for creative license, but sheesh. Not to mention that everything you just saw there IS everything that pretty much happenes in that scene. And there's only two other tiny memories that involve Voldemort when he was an older teen and that's all. Don't be fooled into thinking this movie will go into depth about artistically juxtaposing past young Voldemort with present Harry in a cool way. It doesn't That was my personal negative criticism about the book as well.

Azkaban is without a doubt the best made film of the lot so far. the best book in my opinion is a toss up between Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix. If I had a gun to my head I'd choose Phoenix just because it created the most frustratingly evil character in modern literature history in Dolores Umbridge, who the movie portrays fairly well but is still pretty watered down. There were points in the book where I, a grown man in my early 30's, had to take a timeout to keep from throwing the book through my window out of sheer rage. I also love the DA stuff and Harry's struggle to be believed and the Ministry coverup. Sirius' death is very heartfelt as well.

Anyway, from best to worst ...

Books: 5 (Umbridge pissed me off so much, Ministry of Magic battles sooo much better in the book! Hermione nearly dies, Ron's attacked by brains, Ginny suffers a shattered ankle, Neville bashed in the face, Luna unscathed), 7, 6, 3, 4, 1, 2.

    Movies: 3, 5, 1, 4, 2.

    Reason for new scene.

    by crucio

Apparently the reason the extra scene has been added is to show the impact of the war , the producers said that the threat of evil would not come across aswell on film as it did in the book. As in the book you see or hear about various students losing family members or disappearing , but they didn`t think it would have the same impact just watching people crying or hearing about events secondhand.
The scene I believe will be instead of the meeting between Harry and Scrimgeour at The Burrow. It does mean we will get more bellatrix than in the book and Greyback looks scary as fuck , so it could be a good move.

Looks great so roll on November

The Climax in the Ministry was terrible! In the book the kids kicked all kinds of ass, and battled off Death Eaters for a long time until the Order arrived. They were all fighting for their lives to protect the prophecy, even though none of them knew what it was for. In the film we see them running away, then running away some more. Then we see Harry actually GIVING UP the prophecy to Malfoy before the Order arrives to save him. Complete shambles.

I agree about all the chopping . I think thats probably the main reason why the last film has been split into two , as they will have that much stuff to backtrack on because they had originally cut charcters or scenes. I can`t belive the funeral can be cut , but I didn`t think they would have cut the big scene in the hospital at the end of Goblet showing Snape going back to his "Master" on Dumbledores orders.

Thank fuck that she made them leave Kreacher in or the locket would still be with Delores.

    OoTP: Ministry of Magic, etc.

    by oliviafarts

I'm agreeing with everyone about the VAST DIFFERENCE between what went down in the book as compared to what happened in the book. I sorely missed "Harry Potter Rescue Mission" like everyone else. What was also crucial and the idea that Harry is too busy, as Hermione puts is, with his "saving people thing" to really think about the consequences of his actions. I really wanted Harry's struggle with Hermione to be played out. Here's Harry all gung-ho about going to the Ministry, and here's Hermione fighting him the whole way about it and then finally relenting. And why is this important? Because things went soooo badly in the ministry and Harry should have stopped and listened to Hermione and investigated what was going on before throwing caution to the wind and nearly getting Hermione killed, Sirius killed, and a whole slew of people injured. The whole lesson Harry needed there was, "look before you leap".

My biggest gripe with Half-Blood Prince is when the Deatheaters invade and, because no other students are willing to come out of their rooms to fight, Harry only has his five other friends to help. He gives them all that lucky potion, which sends them on their way. What makes me mad about that is that while hell is breaking loose, where is the BEST STUDENT - Hermione - SENT rather than helping to fight off the invaders? Her and Luna are shuffled off to the basement to guard Snape's office, where he's locked inside watching wizard porn or something. Besides Ginny, Hogwarts is defended by Ron (?!), and Neville (?!). Oy vay! You would think you'd want your best up and fighting around.

I think HBP is a great character study, Rowling really perfected her formula, and it has the most heart-breaking ending. Ootp is the darkest and has a great villian. GOF is one of the most exciting books you'll ever read. The last book feels so much different than the others but has some great bits about Dumbledore. I wish the first 3 books were longer.
    Films: 3, 1, 2, 5, 4
Cauron's is the best all around stand alone Potter film. As a Potter reader, I also like Columbus' attention to detail. He sets up the Potter world in the first half of part 1 beautifully, and I love Richard Harris as Dumbledore, John Williams score and the Quiddich scenes. I thought Ootp was good but then it fell off at the end. And Goblet of Fire managed to squeeze all the action into GoF (poorly) but had very little else.

    Hating on Yates

    by mathiasroyal

What the hell's up with the hating on Yates? His movie was far better than the awfully episodic and oddly paced GOF and the first two which were incredibly dull and boring. Anyways, quit pissing about the differences from the book. Things have been different from the books since the very first one so suck it up. OotP had a much more even tone and pace then GOF. Though my favorite is still PoA, OotP is a close second. Other acronyms which are neat: KFC, ATB, ATM, AT&T, TNT.

    by oliviafarts

Because I've felt Snape was no threat to anyone since day 1, I thought he was just harmless and so was annoyed that Hermione would be sent to guard the most harmless character in the big dramatic scene; meanwhile gross and pervy Greyback is running around upstairs. Again (through my Snape is a good guy goggles), I just felt that the Lucky Potion should have known better to send Hermione down to guard Snape. Or maybe, the potion knew that Hermione wouldn't be so quick to attack Snape as surely the other kids would have? Both characters just sat around waiting for what the other would do.

    by moonlightdrive

dying crushed me knowing that we then wouldn't get to see him in the later films and in fighting action (I don't mean that to sound so selfish RIP). He was fantastic as Dumbledore. Absolutely perfect and you could see he was releshing it. But what made that worse was the casting of Gambon. Just because he is old, British and McKellan already had a wizard role aren't good enough reasons to have given him the job. His performances as Dumbledore to date have been incredibly poor. He's come across as being completely uninterested in the character and the stories and of having no knowledge of the Potter world and books. What a let down to the fans and a disgrace to the acting profession.

... against his foil, Hermione. That is where we see the brunt of Harry's conflicts played out. If these movies want to achieve what The Dark Knight did, we need to see these character's internal struggles. GoF was the biggest offense to that. It just chopped along the tasks without regard to character development.

    by geekgreg

He is one of the most important characters in the books, but incredibly underused in the movies. There's so much more that he could be doing, and I think the questions about his real loyalties are part of what makes the books great. On top of that I love Alan Rickman and would welcome more of him to any of the movies. He plays the part so well and always seems to groud the other actors he's working with. Speaking of Rickman, has anyone heard anything about his new movie Bottle Shock? Trailer looks good, but there's not that much info out there....

Nolan is the benchmark of what can happen when the studeos give control and have faith in a guy that respects the source material and respects the fans and general audience. I hope this time the movie is longer that 2hrs.
