PRINCESS AND THE FROG trailer ribbits across the nets

Published at:  Jul 30, 2008 5:47:42 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... We got a couple of big trailers coming this night - first we have Disney's THE PRINCESS & THE FROG - Disney's return foray into the realm of traditional animation and doesn't it look lovely? I'm very curious to see how they stretch this story into a feature narrative. Though talking lightning bugs - you can't go wrong with. Give it a look and let's hear what you think...

    by badmrwonka

in The Frog Princess, traditionally, the frog was a princess, and it was a prince who kissed her. evidently for the last couple hundred years we've needed to imagine some hot girl on frog action so it always gets perverted. bah, I say!!

Because I want more traditional, hand-drawn animation. That being said, I remember back in 1993, seeing the Lion King trailer for the first time. It was filled with grandeur and majesty. It made such an impression on me I still remember it after all of these years. 15 years later...this is all they can give us? Awkward comedy and a creepy firefly? I sincerely hope this is good. I miss the Disney neo-Renaissance.

I don't know what to think

    by obidawsn

I'm glad that they're getting back to the 2D animation, and the animation does look good, but I hate that they've messed up the story. I'm pretty sure they realized they didn't have a black princess, so they decided to do the story this way. I like that they just made a reference to the fairytale, instead of trying to say this is the fairytale, but I really wanted them to do THE fairytale to go along with all the other classic princess movies. I mean, Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty were classics, and I was hoping they were going to get back into that with this film (when it was first announced), but I'm not so sure. But, either way, I'll go see it since it looks like a decent return to 2D animation, and that's all Disney cares about.

Now that I think about it

    by obidawsn

I wonder if this trailer is even showing us any of the movie. It seems, to me, like maybe it's just a little funny bit to let us know the movie is coming instead of showing us actual footage. They've done it before. I especially think it might be with the camera zooming out and revealing the firefly that talks and flies off toward the sign. Not that they couldn't have just added that to footage from the movie, but I just feel like this is not from the actual movie. But I could be wrong.

So, white natives of New Orleans don't talk like that?

    by chewtoy

I don't understand... the firefly is a black stereotype? He looks as scraggly as all the southern critters in "The Rescuers" to me, or half of the white characters in "The Waterboy". Is he voiced by a black actor? Is the dialect distinctly african-american? I honestly don't know. He's unappealing, certainly... but then I've never been overly fond of poor Southern characters in any movie, and was completely baffled by America's fascination with them in the late 70's to early 80's. Hell, when General Zod and James Bond are dealing with fat sheriffs and southern yokels, you know the trend has gotten out of hand.

And Nastee_Flembot, if you're gonna rag him could you at least take to the time to spell his name right? It's Lasseter.. try and google it sometime.

The readily offended are going to have a field day with this one. Disney draws these gnats like flies. Remember when Aladdin came out and Casey Kasem's moron ass went wild, claiming the film impugned Arabs and Middle Easterners because, wait for it, the film's villian, Jafar, was. an. arab! -Kind of like the film's hero and heroine. I can't wait to see people claim that because the New Orleans deep-south characters don't speak like relatively accent-less midwesterners, that it's horribly racist.

I'm not going to flip over Newman doing the songs until I hear them. His songs for Disney and Pixar movies have been hit and miss with me. And at least we know he won't be singing... I thought the song he wrote for Sarah Machlachlan for TS2 was beautiful... However, all that said, I still don't see why they didn't bring Menken in. His songs for ENCHANTED were gold. Or at the very least, the Lopez's who wrote the songs for FINDING NEMO-THE MUSICAL at WDW's Animal Kingdom.

Meh. Matter of opinion I guess. Jasmine and Aladdin had darker skin, I don't know what else would have qualified them as arabic. I just never understood the flack raised over a villain looking evil and distorted. Don't all Disney villians? As I recall, part of the outrage was over the portrayal of Arabic culture. They changed lines in the opening song "Arabian Nights" to make it seem less dark and cut throat. The source material, of course, really isn't that rosy to begin with.
