Lil' Voldemort!! Gandalf...err... Dumbledore In Battle!! New Images From HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE Appear Online!!
Merrick here...
USA Today has posted two images from HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE.
One reveals the film's 11 year old incarnation of Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), played...appropriately enough...by Fiennes' 10 year old nephew Hero Fiennes-Tiffin.
The other pic shows Dumbeldore (Michael Gambon ) battling Inferi in a shot that evokes a moment from THE LORD OF THE RINGS movies.

YEAH!
-
I wanted the trailer not pics!!! D'oh!
-
lol, you're shitting me.
-
Gambon's always so reactive, angry, scared and unsteady. Professor X would've been perf.
-
they named the kid hero. badass
-
watch the final fight scene from the last movie...ripped from epi 2...christ, steal from something good...oh wait, rowling did that when she took the entire concept of potter from the books of magic...nevermind
-
I was underwhelmed by the last one. Oh and I hope they give us move Tonks in this one
-
hope they dont screw it up. goblet of fire was my favourite before that one, and it ended up being my least favourite of the film series.
-
That's what I was hoping to see when I saw the headline.
Damn. -
Seriously, Merrick... seriously?
-
I mean, really? An english nerd who uses magic to solve all his problems. And people think that is literature... How sad.
-
I can't see how they can do the final scenes justice though, given the teenage target audience. I also hope that they find some way to make is so that the Pensieve scenes don't feel like they take up the whole of the film.
-
Then read the first photo description over on USA today and it seems that they have done exactly that. Condensed the memories in 2 or 3 scenes....good show.
-
It's entertainment. It's a series about characters you come to love and care about. What's so wrong with that, underdog? I absolutely adore the books and even though the films have gotten worse and worse I still get excited when a new film is released. Plus, this is the best book in the series so what's not to be excited about? And the film isn't about some english nerd who uses magic to solve his problems. It's about friendship and loyalty among many other things. It seems you never even touched any of the books.
-
on a little kid's body, like that Wayans brothers movie.
-
Contain the memories in 2 or 3 scenes. You know what that means from this director, don't you? More montages! Woo-hoo! Seeing as the last HP was at least 1/3 montage, that's great news! Oh, wait. No, that sucks a bag of dicks.
-
I wish his name was my name :(
-
...not the biggest fan of the HP movies, but I would have liked to see Richard Harris in action as Dumbledore's role becomes more serious....
-
it doesnt mean more ontages, it means more time spent on the love stories. The crew and director have already stated that the majority of this film will be focusing on the relationships between Ron/Lavender/Hermione and Harry/Ginny, with the penseive scenes (which are what the book is really all about) being relegated to only 3 scenes. Which is complete bs. But oh well, I will watch it opening day anyways.
-
the trailer goes online at 8 pm tonight.
-
The first three or four movies, he just stood around and looked paternal. It's good to see him kick some ass.
-
he does look like Gandalf though.
Harry! You cannot Pass, because you failed your OWL exam by 3 points.... -
...gay gay wrinkly bearded wizard sex I assume...
-
...say such things?...
-
then he gives birth to 100 ass babies called inferies. They're made of farts and Gandledorf accidentally sets them on fire while stroking his 'phoenix'.
-
I haven't hated them, I just haven't liked them either. I just don't connect with it in any way. I never read the books - but then again, I never read Lord of the Rings either before I saw FOTR, and I fell instantly in love with the characters and the story and I immediately went out and got all the books and read them.
Harry Potter, not so much. -
...make sense. Why not stick to the more traditional..."Hairy Pooter"?...
-
...to just fucking post the pictures here instead of the typical shovel journalism they normally do? Oh and Merrick, fuck you.
-
Only on AICN, folks.
-
Or are we going to get another poorly staged CGI-laden mess where no one really gets hurt?
-
TAP that underaged, Scottish-accented Asian ass!
-
Just to fit in.
-
Can't wait.
-
This younger version of Dumbledore looks like Dr. Fu Manchu! WTF?
-
While giving the villian a backstory usually demystifies the character and makes everything generally sucky, this book's take on Voldemort strikes me as very thoughtful and sensetive, without falling into lame psychobabble. It makes Voldemort make sense without making him seem less terrifying. I love the characterization of the heirs of Slytherin being inbred, pathologically embittered backwoods lurkers. There's somthing about that which has a wonderfully dark vibe to it, with just a hint of the hopelessness of the situation. Lots of very creepy imagrey all through the book, actually, which for my money is the tightest plotted of the series.

At least we have an 18 year old Emma Watson in this one.
by mr slippy fist
I might actually watch this one.
-
He was perfect as Dumbledore, how I always imagined him from the books. Gambon's just fine, but for me I can't look at him without thinking of that episode of Top Gear when he almost rolled the Reasonably Priced Car, causing them to name that corner 'Gambon' forever more...Hard to take him seriously after that!
-
I hope he gets picked on in school, serves the parents right.
-
"I put on my robe and wizard hat."
-
...but then again maybe that's just much ado about nothing.
-
Goblet of Fire used to be my favourite book of the Potter series, now it's Half Blood Prince.
-
Like Bookcase or Sandstorm. English speaking folk sure name their kids strange. Here in Hungary, everybody boy is called Attila. It's less confusing this way.
-
"I was just starring in a dreadful little picture. I play the younger version of my mummy's brother, Ralph. So I shot my scenes and finished up in time for the hunt on Saturday lunchtime. Marmaduke had a new quad-bike. It was jolly good fun. Once we'd killed the bloody fox he let me have a go on it, but I only went and crashed the bally thing into the stables. Lilly-Belle and Farquar were laughing ever so much."
-
they should have used the same bobble-head tech from Love Guru when they made a little Mike Meyers
-
see that picture of Dumbledore in the seventies? fucking marvellous design going on there
-
Gambon is ok as Dumbledore but I really wish that Peter O'Toole got the job instead. I think he would have been a much better replacement after Harris passed away.
-
were you taking the piss out of my vernacular, Mr NukeMy? Now steady on old boy.
-
What kind of fucked up name is that? He sounds like a character from the series we haven't met yet.
-
Man, that fucked that movie up... longest book into the shortest movie!
-
Voldemort AND Dumbledore in pics for the new Harry Potter flick? Well, this is some shocking news. What next? Pics of Quidditch matches or robed children walking through castle hallways??
-
Time to wake up! http://tinyurl.com/yqn2ca
-
The joke was much better when it pertained to Burton casting Depp. Now FUCK OFF.
-
The first two weren't as good as the books but were intensely faithful, the third one was excellent though slightly different from the book, the fourth was better than the first two movies by miles, but oddly not as cinematic as the book, and the fifth was the shortest movie based on the longest book, and yet it was reasonable and still lots better than the first two movies. And somehow the music with Williams in the first two was okay but not great, while his music in the third was outstanding, and then they went with other composers and the music became forgetable and mediocre even compared to the first two by Williams. They've all been entertaining, but only the third really captured the magic in the books I thought--and oddly changed stuff that enraged purists in order to get that. Not sure what to expect with this new movie, but I am glad they got over the "oh the actors will outgrow their parts" bull. I'll take that as just a big "we reserve the right to ditch these kids if they don't age well" disclaimer--although the media bought it hook line and sinker, even cracking jokes that Radcliffe wouldn't still be playing the part by the time Order of the Pheonix became a movie (chumps!). I do wish Cauron had come back for one more. Shame he didn't make Goblet, I think he'd have delivered magic again, and that was the one that I thought fell the most short of what it could have been even though it was better than the Columbus outings (and I can't even bitch at Columbus too much cause he did cast the right kids for the parts and set a tone that paid off later).
-
Whoops - SPOILER ALERT!
-
But this talk back has hit an all time low for juvenile trashtalk. Way to go people, proud to be a part of this.
Sheesh! -

Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban is still the one to beat
by performingmonkey
He's the only one who realised 'this is a world of magic, let's put it onscreen FFS!!' He's the only one that saw the movie as a seperate entity to the book and yet tapped into the overall feel of the series better than ANYONE else. Goblet of Fire is the second best - the effects sequences are fucking brilliant and there WAS some great acting in it, with Daniel Radcliffe suddenly seeming credible and Ralph Fiennes coming in as the 100% right choice for Voldemort. It was the right length too, unlike Order of the Phoenix which was too short considering the size of the story. Order is actually the only one I felt disappointed with after seeing it. Even the first two movies had more merit. The big Department of Mysteries sequence SUCKED compared with the book.
-
underwelming. I'll wait 3 more hours for the trailer to pee myself.
-
where's your sense of humor today? Tremors fuck up your afternoon, or something? They only caused everyone here in OC to go out to an early lunch.

...(egg salad boy, Cock tease and co.) who feel the need to keep us all up to date on the latest passing craving they are experiencing in their changing and pimply teenage bodies? Aren't there Hanna Montana or Degrassi Junior High TB's for that sort of thing?...
-
when school's out, there's apparently not enough homework to keep the kids busy. My excuse is that work has been keeping me too busy lately to do much more than occassionally make a snarky comment or two and leave.
-
I agree, best HP movie. I don't think it will be beat.
-
He would have been perfect. Never like Broadbent for whatever his name is

The first two weren't as good as the posts on the last thread but were intensely faithful, the third one was excellent though slightly different from the second, the fourth was better than the first two posts by miles, but oddly not as cinematic as the second post, and the fifth was the shortest post based on the longest post, and yet it was reasonable and still lots better than the first two posts. And somehow the post with Ray Gamma in the first two was okay but not great, while his post in the third page was outstanding, and then they went with other readers and the posts became forgetable and mediocre even compared to the first two by Speed Fricassee and ben04. They've all been entertaining, but only the third really captured the magic in the posts I thought--and oddly changed stuff that enraged purists in order to get that. Not sure what to expect with this new post, but I am glad they got over the "oh the readers will outgrow their posts" bull. I'll take that as just a big "we reserve the right to ditch these readers if they don't write well" disclaimer--although the media bought it hook line and sinker, even cracking jokes that Ray Gamma wouldn't still be posting the posts by the time the thread reached 1000 posts. I do wish NukeMyFridge had come back for one more. Shame he didn't make this post, I think he'd have delivered magic again, and that was the one that I thought fell the most short of what it could have been even though it was better than the previous post I wrote (and I can't even bitch at Flickapoo too much cause he did write a good post and set a tone that paid off later).
-
oh, by 'those AICNers' I thought you meant women, cause there really aren't many of 'those' here either
-
that's what caused the tremors 2: aftershocks
-
the look of this movie so far. All the pictures I've seen so far look moody, with unique lighting and tone. I like it so far. MTV has another picture of a piece of memory in a small glass vial, looks really cool. It seems as though the teaser, the real one, is going to be up in a few minutes...
-
I got played, tryin' to watch this mutherfucker early
-
I only found it on msn.com videos so far, no HD version yet.. Looks moody and intense.
-
Sorry if it's already been posted:

That's the international one, at least. I think it looks damn good, and is actually exactly what a teaser should be. -
Bruno Delbonnel = love
-
http://tinyurl.com/62ltn9
-
Harris would have had a heart attack filming some of the more action-y scenes of the series.
-
Just watched it a few more times and it looks great. You're right about the cinematography, what a needed and perfect change from prior films. Now if we can get this in quicktime!
-
Looks like a huge step up from Order of The Phoniex. The cinematography is amazing. I LOVE HP!!
-
Yeah, big step up from the previous films. I actually damned impressed.
-
I hope the rest of the movie's that good!
-
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron (made Children of Men after), Gary Oldman played Sirius, it was very dark and exciting.
The rest of the movies were rubbish though. Especially the one made by Yates (who is sadly making the 6th and 7th). -
... Would anyone have noticed? I rate it as the best so far.
-
Wow, the teaser has got me excited (that's it's job, right?). New cinematographer onboard - check. Michael Gambon more involved as Dumbledore - check. The focus on Voldemort and casting the right 10-year-old kid for that scene - check. DARK tone - check. Man this does look really dark. But it will also include some of the lightest moments in the entire series. Has David Yates pulled it off? It certainly looks like it.
-

-
It would have been good.
No offense, Saluki. Mileage varies, obviously.
I rate them mostly for their acting, since the scripts are almost always weak, and Cuaron and Yates got the best performances out of those kids. I mean, BY FAR. Plus, they both had some actual artistic style. Now, with Delbonnel on board shooting the book that most seems like it was written for a movie? Yeah, I'm looking forward to this one. -
i thought book 5 was one of the dullest, and i thought movie 5 was one of the best. I'm glad hes on board for the rest of the series.
-
and has his mano-a-mano staredown with Dumbledore. I read on IMDB that he isn't in the cast list, so if they use whatever "teenage Voldemort" for that scene, I would be very disappointed. And if they just flat out cut it... that would be flabergasting, quite frankly. It's one of the few scenes in the movie where the (admitedly minor) protagonist confronts in major antagonist in the series. Oh, and SNAPE _____ DUMBELDORE!
-

Also, Yates & Co. took a dull book 5 and made a great movie
by tallboy66
Yes, I really missed the small "HARRY POTTER: RESCUE MISSION" button part, but aside from that it distiled the book's story down to Harry raging against the minstry of magic machine. Good show!
-
ohh for the love of crumbcake...will everyone please get off of cuarons nuts...truth is his did a piss poor job of translating the 3rd movie to film...yes hes a great visual director...but he did a terrible job translating the book to film....no marauders map...barely any explanation for things...a shorter running time for a better bigger book and the worst ending ever with that ridiculous freeze frame...i remember the entire audience of potter fans groaning at that last scene....please give the other directors some respect and be happy cuaron wont be butchering half blood prince or deathly hallows.....the probably would have been 1:30 each with him at the helm
-
The quick glimpses in the trailer are from OotP. And Fiennes has said he isn't in this one. But V. has gotta be there for the end with Dumbledore.
-
I'm happy to admire Cuaron's direction with the rest of you, but he still managed to turn (on first read at least) the scariest of the Potter books into a somewhat insipid brew, flashy directing or no. Plus I'll never forgive the fucker for randomly (and most jarringly) changing the whole layout of Hogwarts for NO REASON AT ALL. At least Mike Newell had the sense to inject some of the missing English humor into his film, not to mention having the boldest of the script adaptations so far.As for Dumbledore I don't think either casting has got anywhere close to the character yet - Harris was utterly dull, while Gambon seems to lack the required oddbod sensibility that the books relish. Stephen Fry's audio-books come closest so far...
-
Or at least a decent substitute like the perrenially underemployed Bruce Broughton (who hasn't scored a theatrical movie in a FULL DECADE!). The OOTP score was HORRID.
-
The movie won't be as creepy but I dig they way they are selling this.
-
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in thinking they got Dumbledore wrong with Gambon. Richard Harris was perfect--just like the book's description. For a series with such perfect casting for Hagrid, Snape, the original Dumbledore and everyone else, I can't believe they blew it so bad with this one. Gambon seems like an angry, grumpy old bastard version of Dumbledore and I don't like it. I guess it's too much to hope they'll wise up and replace him for part 7.
-
Is what he made of the Dementors. They simply weren't scary enough. In the book they were ominous, frightening 12 foot walking hooded creatures creatures that could easily make any of the Nazgul from LOTR look like Casper in comparison. The fear people in the book feel for the Dementors was palpable. In the movie, however, Cuaron made them look loke a bunch of flying rags, fairly unable to scare my cat. I also didn't like the way he portrayed Prof. Trelawney's prophecy to Harry. It totally lacked the gripping factor from the book.
-
I looked, then looked again, then squinted, and each time the pic of Dumbledore looks like Ian McKellan from LOTR.
-
I'm wary about Yates - I enjoyed OotP about as much as Goblet of Fire but damn, learn how to stage a fucking action sequence. The Department of Mysteries sequence was awful. But the trailer just focusing on Voldemort's origin was great, and creepy. Hope the movie lives up. Hope we finally get a GREAT Harry Potter movie.
