George Lucas And The Challenge Of INDY 5!!
Merrick here...
Times Online has a longish interview with George Lucas in which George candidly discusses the complexities of setting KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL into motion, and how the same obstacles could impact the development of another INDIANA JONES movie. Sounds like getting Ford and Spielberg and Lucas on the same page was a struggle at times .
Memorable Lucas quotes from the piece include:
Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying ‘I want it this way’ and ‘I want it that way’, whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, ‘We’ll do it this way’ — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it’s a little hard on a practical level.
Ahem.
Lucas also divulges this interesting tidbit:
Really, with the last one, Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we’d like to take. I’m in the future; Steven’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that.
..says the interview, whose entirety you can find HERE.
Interesting stuff, which might explain the lackluster/disjointed quality some fans have noticed in CRYSTAL SKULL.

sucked ass
-
hope they can figure something out
-
Sad to say but the quality of IJ4 shows that there was alot of trouble behind the scenes. A direct example of too many cooks in the kitchen
-
God I hope not.
-
just saying
-
Loved the snake scene in Crystal Skull. Pure Genius!
-
Yep, sounds like George "Franchisicide" Lucas is at it again. YOU FREAKIN' TWAT, GEORGE! Of COURSE Speilberg wants it in the past. Y'know why? 'CAUSE IT ROCKED THAT WAY! But oh no. I'm sure you'd much rather have cute little gophers and vine-swinging monkeys. Way to cock things up, George. Way to cock . . . it . . . up.
-
opening night, after tha i tried watching it online and i couldn´t stand 15 minutes of it!!! (and the first 15 minutes are the good ones)
-
Please retire...
-
don't know what to say. Would I love more Indy? Sure. Do I really want aliens in the story? Not so much.
-
If you make a new film that isn't a sequel and it is a success, then you can 'maybe' talk some smack. If Steven wants it a different way then you, I might listen to him. You are not in the same league with him anymore sir.
-
maybe George can make Indy go to the moon on the Apollo space program or some shit like that!
-
George was the reason this movie sucked so much ass. His fingerprints were all over this piece of shit, much like TPM and AotC. Retire George, retire.
-
That interview was one monkey short of an Indy movie.

Its pretty obvious there is some Lucas hate behind this post...
by fassbinder79
But to me the most important quote in this post is:
"when I first did Jones, I just said, ‘We’ll do it this way’ — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it’s a little hard on a practical level."
Spielberg should have just taken marching orders from Lucas like he did with the early films. There was nothing really wrong with those (I hated Doom but most people seem to love that one) and from what I understand it was Lucas' painful divorce and hiring Willard Hyuck (Lucas' longtime friend) that made that film what it is...The movie that most Indy fans seem to enjoy the most. Not me but I know its the most popular. So its interesting to me when Lucas is constantly being blamed for things that I believe are clearly Spielberg's fault.
Let us not forget one of SS's recent trainwrecks War Of The Worlds. And much of Indy 4 is reminiscent of what was wrong with that film...And Lucas had NOTHING to do with WOTW.
"Dad, I need to see this!"
FUCK THAT SHIT -
I do don't understand why people get angry at it! You can tell some parts (not all) were ripped off from Mummy but STILL! If Mr. Lucas has an idea--go go go!
-
...if George Lucas has his head so far up his own ass he can't function anymore...or if he's the only one only the planet who doesn't buy into his own hype...and really sees his own work the way it really is...I can't decide...on that note...keep making indy movies as long as you can...I'll be there for every one

Indiana Jones and the weird facial hair on Lucas's fat face!
by cobrakai
-
No way! You're so gross.
(Why?) -
I'm sorry, but between the two of you, Steven's track-record is waaaay more solid.
And you still haven't issued a formal apology for the goddamn prequels, asshat. -
He only highjacks the talkback when you engage with him. On that note, I shall never speak of him again.
Concerning Indiana Jones, I really wish Lucas would sit tight in his role as 'Ideas Man', and let other people put those ideas into motion, bending and altering the idea as necessary to tell a good story. In theory, I enjoyed 'Crystal Skull', but you could see Lucas's fingerprints all over the aspects of the film that dragged it down. I know he was an inovative maverick back in the day, but there's this weird goofball quality now to his work that overshadows the great ideas he concocts (i.e. Tarzan-Shai, Jar-Jar Binks, Jedi Rocks, etc.)
I'd much rather see a Speilberg Indiana Jones movie based on a Lucas idea, than a Speilberg/Lucas/Ford collaboration mish-mash. -
of what hollywood does to creative talent, the guy´s a joke now! people in the 70s must´ve thought he was the second coming or something, look at him now!!!
-
Yes, Maxwell's Hamer, that was my whole exactly! Ideas.
-
with a resume of quality film direction that dates back to the mid-seventies and most recently has been supplying audiences with some of the most powerful films of his career. The other is George Lucas.
-
That Spielberg was the director of Indy 4...Not Lucas. So every point that people want to make about the story problems and blaming Lucas for them...That doesn't mean you can blame GL for the horrendous acting throughout the film. That is Spielberg's job...To work with the actors. The performances were awful and that was completely his department and his fault. Stop blaming everything on GL. Its childish.
-
In my opinion, there wasn't really anything wrong with War of the Worlds. I really enjoyed it, and found that most of the negativity stemmed from Tom Cruise backlash, and all the fanboys who like to shit on stuff to make themselves feel cool
With that said, what about Crystal Skull was remeniscent about WoW, and to what end did that make both movies bad? -
....the reason Indy IV sucked so much godawful dick was mainly due to Lucas and the 'shift' in tone and quality he insisted upon? Well, not exactly fucking surprised there, boys and gals. Also, why does his description of making another one sound like he's describing squeezing out a turd? Oh and Harry, Blu-Ray won as you know. I rule.
-
That's why you'll never hear him bad mouth them.
-
That is very strange for you to say (type) that. Maybe YOU want to have some egg slad? LOL!!!!
-
Indiana Jones and the Neck of Colossal Circumference. You may begin.
-
"The most powerful films of his career"
?
Let me see...
The Terminal - Fuck No
War Of The Worlds - Fuck No
Munich - Sweaty Eric Bana swinging his wet hair around during sex in slow mo - TOTAL CRAPOLA
Spielberg has made some stinkers and its time that people called him out on it.
Indy 4 - Turd Juice of the highest order
-
everybody else wanted it the other way. I BETCHA!
-
Sorry. I'm not forgiving a bad movie, but at least GL tried to put something out there for the millions who were bothering about it for 20 years. Maybe that's why he resisted doing it (and Star Wars) for so long...he wasn't sure he could do it justice. But every geek and the mother they live with was hounding and hounding and so he said "fuck it, let's get back in the game so they'll shut up." Well, all he did was make it worse. So he tried to do INDY again, thinking Spielberg could right the ship. Oops, maybe not. Well, whatever. Let it go and enjoy the 1000 other movies that come and go in the next few years. Re: "Steven is in the past, I'm in the future..." Sounds like Spielberg wanted something mystical because he has specific beliefs about depicting aliens and George wanted something sci-fi because he'd already done the two biggest religious artifacts possible and wanted to reflect the era with some pulp sci-fi. So it wasn't great, well...hey, "Batman & Robin" sucked, but somehow Batman managed to survive, you know?
-
what the fans think, or Steven, or anybody really. Spielberg is right for wanting to maintain some of the less modern sensibilities for new Indy films. Part of why they were so cool was because the stuff felt like it was really happening. that guy was really being drapped behind the back of a truck with a whip. those dudes were really fighting on top of a tank. If Spielberg does not have equal say then no more Indy for me.
-
Pleanty of classic Indy, but the nuclear blast, monkey swinging, waterfall driving was pretty dumb. Take out those parts and you have a classic Indy movie. Yet my 7 year old nephew and the 4 and 8 year old sons of my friend say their favorite part was the monkey swinging, so what do I know?
-
Indy 4 will become the next Phantom Menace where people will still be bitching over and over about it over 10yrs after its gone. i mean how hard is it to get over it? oh and more stuff that was Lucas's fault but Spielberg's : the location shooting. i've seen many complain that everything looks fake because its all sets and soundstages well it was Spielberg's decision, he didnt wanna leave america to film.
-
what Lucas wants?
-
Chris Carter is the new George Lucas! Just writing shit for the sake of writing shit!
-
... hes responsible for everything that sucked about Indy 4. I mean, we all kinda knew it, but damn. And, I really liked Indy 4, it's flawed as shit but I liked it. Anyway, I think the good old George is starting to buy the crap his own hype machine is producing. Either that, or hes completely clueless.
-
I think Lucas is done creating cool movies.
-
Indy 4 sucked, it sucked hard! And this is coming from a guy who saw all the Indy movies during it's original releases (ok, I'm showing my age a little, but I was 8 when I saw Raiders!)
Anyway - it sounds like Steven wanted to preserve what came before, while good ol' George wanted to forget it.
Awwww, Imagine if Steven had made it his way? Alright, who am I kidding, it would have still came out shitty. -
...but if Speilberg was responsible for all the soundstages, well shame on him. Those opening scenes at the Area 51 warehouse kind of put me in a bad frame of mind for the rest of the movie.
-
I actually like Tom Cruise in quite a few films including one of Spielberg's (Minority Report).
What did I find wrong with War Of The Worlds?
1. People running towards the aliens when they were attacking.
2. A terrible performance by the son
3. One of the worst screenplays I've ever seen
4. One of the worst endings I've ever seen ...What was up with the house in Boston being in perfect condition.
5. I got more scares watching Mars Attacks
6. I got more scares and felt more honest to goodness suspense watching Cloverfield.
7. "Dad I need to see this."
8. Tim Robbins was awful
9. There was absolutely no chemistry between Cruise and his family. Spielberg has lost his soul as a filmmaker. I haven't felt for the characters in his films for quite sometime (with the exception) of Catch Me If You Can.
10. Alluding to 9/11 inappropriately when the movie carried no sense of genuine dread whatsoever.
11. "Dad I need to see this..."
12. The goofiest looking aliens this side of Mac And Me. That basement scene was ridiculous. It was like watching SS struggling to capture the old Jurassic magic and not succeeding at all. It was embarrassing to watch quite frankly. -
BWAAAA HAA HAA HAA!!!Let's try that again:"[Lucas is] a fat, has-been-shadow-of-his-former-self-hack--nay, the granddaddy of all hacks; Steven actually has a smidgen of artistic integrity left and might conceivably pull a masterpiece out of his hat (though it's very doubtful)." Spielberg: please stay far away from this man from here on out. He's (artistically speaking) cinematic poison.

George Lucas has chosen a huge ego and here's why...
by cletus van damme
...his handsome, lustrous head of hair and magnificent man-beard will be the only things left after the:a) Zombies kill us allb) SkyNet becomes sentientc) Joel Schumacher signs on to Batman IIId) All the above
-
Al least, this is what I've read.
-
Yes, please, defend Lucas and tell us to "get over" those shitty prequels.
Indy 4 sucked, btw. MONKIES. -
Is keeping Shia sober.
-
That and the Gophers, that's the future right there.
-
...and the descent into suckage...
Why George, why? -
BULLSHIT!
-
...gonna 'SPLODE!!!!
-
Sort of like the part in Star Wars part 1 with Luke and Laya...which was George Lucas TOO, so, Spielber maybe, but still...
-
Wouldn't they have to make an Indiana Jones 4, first?
-
it's side-splittingly hilarious the amount of flack lucas gets for, well...everything. the fact of the matter is, indy 4 is mostly spielberg's fault. the berg has been phoning in all his 'popcorn' films for a while now. he still does good work when it comes to 'serious' material like munich, but his days as a master of genre films are well and truly over (and i'd loved to be proved wrong, i really would). lucas is responsible for story ideas only - spielberg has the veto power for the final cut. so that tarzan stuff and all the rest of the nonsense is likely from him.and consider this- temple of doom wipes the floor with the pedestrian last crusade. which one has more of lucas's sensibilties, and which one has more of spielberg's?
-
Speilberg is the only reason there was even a glimmer of the 1st three films. Lucas is off his Meds or something.
-
DON'T SUCK.I blame everyone for the failure that was INDY 4. I don't know what George or Steven's problem is/was. But I've never seen such a tepid attempt at former glory.

Ford needs to take roles that are suitable for his age
by superunknown85
The way other actors like Anthony Hopkins, Brian Cox, and Robert Redford have done. Ford's days as an action hero are over.
-
As much as I admire Lucas a great deal and Spielberg's Jaws will always be one of the best films ever made...
Nolan is the new filmmaking master...Period.
No ifs ands or buts about it.
With BB, Prestige and now Dark Knight he owns summer and is one of greatest storytellers of our time. A commercial pop genius. A true magician. I can't wait to see what Nolan does next and I pray to god he and his brother can steer as far clear of Lucas as possible. I was bummed to hear that Jonathan is writing Interstellar for Spielberg. Don't do it! You don't need him!!!!!!! He needs you!!!! -
Look what all of you have done to me.
-
... I was thinking the same thing. It could be a 2-minute movie, where Indy Jr. flips the Jeep during a chase after taking 8 Goldschlager shots.
-
I appreciate your attempt to defend your not liking WoW, but general statements like "One of the worst screenplays I've ever read" and "Tim Robbins was awful" aren't really going to persuade me. And your intent may not actually be to persuade me, but can you be more specific?
Because i don't think the screenplay sucked. And I don't think Tim Robbins did either.
Critique the movie for me. Don't just whine about it. -
Took the whole family to see Indy IV (including my 8 yr old son, the biggest living Indy fan kid on the planet, who wore his Indy fedora to the screening).
We were all a bit disappointed, most of all my 8y. old Indy fan. We had watched the other three films repeatedly up till then, and I found myself sitting for a lot of the time in the movie over thinking it, noticing how it just didn't stack up.
I thought that was probably the last time we'd get a chance to see an Indy film on the big scren (and it was the first time my kids had ever seen an Indy film on the big screen), and so after a few weeks said "screw that!" and I took my kids back.
We all enjoyed it alot better the second time. Didn't sit and keep reviewing how it wasn't quite what I'd hoped -- just watched it. Noticed a lot of fun details I hadn't, the first time, and came out of it thinking "hey, I just watched an Indiana Jones movie". My kids all liked it better on the second viewing.
The thing is, once I chose to put aside all the stuff I didn't like (George's alien stuff, tarzan Shia, Marion's driving over the cliff, etc.), I was able to really pick up on the genuine Indy-ness that was the rest of it. There were a number of great touches that I was able to let soak in, but which were utterly obscured by the jarring moments of crapulence we had to endure the first time.
It's not a ringing endorsement when you have to see a movie twice in order to like it.
But at least I feel like if we never see an Indy film on the big screen again, my kids and I left the theatre feeling good that we saw an Indy film on the big screen.
George: stop trusting your instincts. -
coffee shits squirted willy-nilly into an otherwise prisine toilet bowl. Look, the guys (Weird-Beard) is clearly a putz. Can we all agree and go home?
flemmingonfilms.blogspot.com -
Life is too short for me to write a dissertation on why I didn't like War Of The Worlds. I'm not trying to sway you. War Of The Worlds was a piece of dog shit as far as I'm concerned. You're free to like it all you want.
-
I really could care less.
-
When Miles tells Jack, "You're crazy. You've absolutely gone CRAZY."
Folks, it's not even about greed. George Lucas has gone completely insane. -
thats why i hate him now, look at what sydney lumet does in his 80s and look at what GL does to his lifetime work!
and DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD you couldnt be more right -
and the prequels were pure cinematic bliss, not the terrible films you think them to be, so be quiet, the lot of ya, and get ready for Indy 5 which will make $300 million in 5 days!
-
Which of coarse was when Indy 4 came out.I mean Last Crusade had them running off into the sunset,so you can have your own ideas of what happens next ..and I bet it was better then shia leaobuf swinging on tree tops with monkeys.,
-
the only creative mind behind the "good" ones? That's precisely the kind of bullshit he tries to advocate in this interview.
Spielberg has its faults, but the good bits in Indy IV have "The Beard" written all over (the opening scene in the hangar, the motorbike chase, the ants, the saucer shot) while many shitty parts are branded "The Neck" without a doubt (Prairie dog, vines...). Shia has the shared custody, I suppose. -

A friend of mine told me a story recently that I found telling..
by fassbinder79
A british writer I believe turned down an offer from Steven Spielberg to write Tin-Tin in favor of doing Dark Shadows.
And I'm not talking about DS the movie in development with Johnny Depp...
...I'm talking about DS as a revamped tv series in England.
My friend told me the writer was quoted as saying something to the effect of "I've always loved Dark Shadows and how could I pass up that opportunity?" Something like that.
Yeah well there used to be time when a person in the industry would say "its a chance to work with steven spielberg...How could I pass that up?"
My how times have changed. -
let the fans vote on a plot and fill THAT movie
-
I really do not get all the hate and bitterness. Even the fridge was fine. Over the top? Sure. Which Indy film is not over the top?
I hope they do another Indy film but it does not sound like that is going to happen.
For the record, I really liked War of the Worlds and really hated Temple of Doom. Tried to watch it again a few weeks ago but could not get past Kate Capshaw's character. -
That's the biggest bummer of this piece. Maybe it's more PC to get a black director, but still.
-
but only if they can avoid this complex tension and give us a good story. Maybe if they reliquish some control and bring in some fresh younger filmmakers, and just act as advisors. Something I think Lucas should have done with the last Star Wars trilogy. Maybe give the reins to the next Indy movie to the next Guillermo del Toro. You're not going to get good creativity with egos constantly battling.
-
I thought after the prequels he was going to make small, terrible films, rather than the big terrible ones the prequels were. Instead it's been SW cartoons, Indy IV, SW animated movie, SW tv show, Indy V.:.
-
Dear Mr. Lucas/Spielberg/Ford,
If you can’t all agree then don’t shoot a crap script – fix it while it’s on paper and the fan’s nostalgic memories aren’t ruined! Or just don’t make the movie at all. I’m sure your respective families will not have to make great compromises in lifestyle if this movie never is made. Better yet – how about dusting off the creativity that made your films great instead of rehashing the glory days. Honestly, is all that you have left in your head stories about aliens and outer space? Come on. Remember back when it was art before it was a paycheck? Back when you made films on maxed out credit cards and lived like a broke college student just to get by? That’s when you really CARED how your movies turned out. Not your profit margin on your ‘investment.’
You guys better watch out, because I know a guy with a taste for canned tuna and 39 cent soup that still has some creativity. You better hope he doesn’t pick up a video camera, or you might be shown up by a guy named Ralph. Yeah!
That is all. -
truly a piece of shit film of epic hackery
-
get over it, they're just movies. dont like em, never watch them or speak of them again and your problem is solved. i realize thats easier said than done for people who've placed the originals on pedestals they dont even deserve but we all have hurdles to get over in life. but i cant deny its fun and funny watching people bitch and bitch the same recycled complaints whenever an article on lucas or a lucas project shows up. i bet they at AICN only post these stories to have a fun read from the reactions. :)
-
Seriously, George. What happened? I used to love you more than I love most of my family, but now... Wow. It's just so sad that you've become a Born Again Douche Bag. You used to be so... awesome... Money really does change people, huh? Please George, listen to Steven. He's at least mostly still awesome. People wanted to see an Indy flick that was like the old ones. Set in the universe that was established with the characters acting like themselves. Part of tyhe original charm of the films was that they were set in the past. Now, we're into this whole nostalgia on nostalgia kick... we just wannt see Indy punch a nazi. We want to see him active in a quest for something or other with crazy obsticles in his way. We don't need to see Indy meet Obi-Wan Kenobi or whatever. We certainly don't need any more GODDAMNED greenscreen. Fuck. Give yourself sixty million and make it right.
-
I actually would love to see some experimental indie films from lucas like he talked about years ago. I don't think they would suck as you do. I think that is probably what he needs to do to get himself back in the game.
-
You guys can keep arguing over who's to blame for how Indy 4 turned out, but the fact is that both beards are guilty. The reason Indy 4 was such an aenemic, malodorous armpit fart of a movie is because it's the bastard child of BOTH Binksian Lucas and Walkie-Talkian Spielberg. These guys were once GODS of genre cinema but have lost their faith somewhere along the way. They're simply going through the motions now, hoping that gobs of cash and big laffs will hide the stale odor emanating from their films.
-
Let's have an anti-Lucas petition so he stops making those horrible films. Boll is nothing, no one watches his movies anyways. While there are always tons of money and people pouring for Lucas' movies. And since 1992, THEY SUCK MAJOR DONKEY BALLS !!! Stop doing movies Lucas. Produce young talented directors, use our money for something decent !
-
I do eat ramen noodles and a can of tuna for lunch almost every day. I could probably film Harrison Ford eating my lunch and have it be more entertaining... and I actually like KotCS a little bit.
-
Ford hated the story. The berg overruled him. I cant see ford signing up for another one. I just cant.
-
Ford hated the story. The berg overruled him. I cant see ford signing up for another one. I just cant.
-
Lucas to shut the fuck up. Having read every script for Indy 4 except good ol David Inept's, its celar there were certain things Lucas HAD to see in Indy 4 - the tree things, the vine swinging, the aliens, Oxley, etc. Though Darabont did handle this thigns better then Keopp, the movie was still flawed from the start. Does anyone thing Stevie boy will step up like a man and tell Lucas to quit being a Fucktard adnd shut his Sea Gull lookin face? I can TOTALLY FORGIVE Indy 4 if 5 comes out swinging with a less kiddie tone. You don't have to dumb shit down for kids! Look at TDK. I had several kids in there who ate the shit up! AH. What I wouldn't give for the chance to talk to Steven or write the damned thing myself...
-
i dont understand people who feel their nostalgic memories are hurt or shit upon by the new movies. how can something in the future affect whats already happened in the past? it doesnt matter what happens now, whatever those older movies did for you will always have happened. i dont understand how a new movie can affect how you felt about an older movie years before the new movie even existed. i can sorta see the star wars complaint since they seem to wanna erase the non-special edition versions from existance but everything else, your older loved movie will always be there and nothing can change how you felt and still feel about, well at least nothing should. to stick to the movie in topic, i just dont understand how the new Indy, regardless of how good or bad you found it, can affect your opinion of the originals, especially if you've seen them long ago. look at me, repeatign myself too...oh my lord, i've become one of you....save me jeebus. :P
-
lucas has lost it...he needs to be put in a home
-
we need a secret underground nazi plot to take over the world, minimal shia lebouf, no aliens and at least one rooftop, jeep and motorbike chase that ends with a building blowing up. and some submarines. and a volcano. and a non cg monkey. and some gold of some kind! AT LEAST!
-
a massive genocide of all things that were great, it started in 1997 and has swelled to maniacal levels. i think we need foreign powers to invade the USA and free us from this totalitarian regime of Skywalker Ranch or go underground and wage a guerilla war
-
Spielberg wants to keep it in the past... Lucas wants to bring it in a whole new direction... It's funny to me that he is actually capable of SAYING what the problem is, but isn't able to recognize it as the problem. George Lucas needs to stop making movies before he kills whatever credibility as a filmmaker he has left. Oh wait, too late.
-
Sounds like he wants to replace Harrison and start with the son of Indy
-
an overly nostalgic film but the berg pressed on reagardless. This franchise will end up like Leathal Weapon. There has been much talk of a fifth film but it wont happen. I think that they should let Darabont direct it. Heres one for the shia haters. He was arrested for DUI.
-
seriously, the man keeps digging his own grave every time he does an interview.his swelling ego has gotten too big for his head and must be what is making his neck bulge out like a watermelon
-
no, spielberg has an equal hand in how brilliant raiders turned out. that was back when both of them still cared and had something to prove.
the point i was trying to make is that lucas has always been more interested in the visceral, adventure aspects of indiana jones, while spielberg is insistent in softening up the series with silly comedy, and family drama (shia the son, and henry jones sr.)after all, he's the one who to this day is apologetic for how 'dark' temple of doom was.
the ants, the flying saucers, the warehouse, the nuclear blast - all these ideas came from lucas and have been carried through many script drafts. praire dogs and monkeys - if you read about the production, these all came from spielberg. and at least lucas had the balls to end revenge of the sith on a bleak ending, but spielberg insists on cruise's son implausibly surviving a nuclear explosion in war of the worlds. -
Yeah. KOTCS was my least favorite. But still enjoyable. I like the little spin-off things like Clone Wars or Season 8 of Buffy. I hope they enventually animate some of Jones' better non-film adventures.
-
...if Jim Cameron's Avatar ends up being balls, cinema as we know it will finally be turned on its head. Once the last God of Genre Celluloid falls from grace, perish the thought, all bets will be off. Nothing will ever be considered a sure thing for maybe a generation until some new folks reclaim that particular, unassailable high ground.
Scary thought. -
Some didn't care for The Prestige but I thought it was fun as hell.
-
...due to that very scene, Knobules. The tripod rising up and the vaporizing of people on the street was fucking amazing and horrifying. Alas, Indy 4 lacked such a mitigating scene.
-
Make me care.
No one gives a fuck.
You've soiled it, dog. Take a break. -
Go back in time and kill Hitler, or go back in time and kill Lucas right before he could reject the Darabont script? Decisions, decisions....
-
Ok Georgie Porgie...if that be the case, I'd much rather see 'Raiders' again than 'Crystal Shia'. This guy is such a douche. The Berg pwns Lucas and has for quite some time.
-
Gee, why were so much "exterior" scenes shot in studio, unlike 20 years ago?? Can you guess ?? Could it be that fansites like this and hundreds others have cropped up over the past decade, and entertainment shows like ET and Access Hollywood have reporters and "spies" that will photograph Harrison Ford scratching his ass on location if they could. You have the biggest fan based geek film of the past 20 years and wonder why they couldn't just film wherever they damn well pleased????
-
How soon MUST it get made in order to work.
Anyone think this will ever get made?
-
Says aint it cool faggots defending him the last time he mentioned a sequel to crystal skullfuck.
-
Lacklustre ending but pretty good overall. Agree with DocPazuzu that Avatar is the last great hope. You can do it Jimbo!
-
Do everyone and favour Lucas and stick to making toys. Every single piece of my childhood has been sodomised by that Boss Nass-necked cunt!
-
I know. Have Indy become frozen in carbonite or some such nonsense and he can wake up in the seventies. Nixon (played by Mike Myers) can be the heavy and Indy can have wacky fun chasing around Deep Throat in search of the missing tapes. Indiana Jones and the Watergate.
-
Still more fun than Temple of Doom
-
Spielberg has turned into a filmmaking conveyor belt and Lucas can't figure out who the guy who made Star Wars was. They're both equally to blame.
-
LucAss has no clue how to make a good movie.
-
Some of those discussions between Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford. I mean...how BIZARRE.
-
Agreed. Had Peter Jackson not over-indulged himself on a wobbly KING KONG, I'd say he may be the only one who could immediately take that baton and run with it. So, there may be more resting on Cameron and AVATAR than people realize.
-
George isn't in the future. He's a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
-
"Hold on. . . She's still tawkin'."
"Hold on. . . She's still twakin'."
"Wait. . . I'm here to fix the lights."
"There's nothin' wrong wit da lights!"
"Wait. . . I'm with the band!"
"We ain't got no band!"
-
is all about raping the past. come up with something NEW... To me, that would be truly moving forward.
-
A lot of people do. It's only a whiny little minority online who seem to repeat the "raped my childhood" meme.
I also liked KOTCS. Indy has always been a pulp story about super-science and supernatural things, and anyone bitching about the "unrealistic" fridge or jungle scenes needs to go back and watch the fucking mine car ride or the heart-removal scenes, or the fucking VOODOO DOLL in an INDIAN cult in Temple of Doom, or the majority of Connery's scenes in Last Crusade. It's FUN adventure based on old serials. It's supposed to have impossible escapes and play fast and loose with the laws of physics. -
how can they top the 4th one? it was perfect, leave it alone.
-
A lot of people DON'T like the prequels. Sure, most people don't hate them with the fire of a thousand white hot suns like me, but the general reaction to people who aren't five is "they sucked, but I have a life, so I'm not getting worked up over it."
-
But he still did the film...how can a billionaire keep doing movies just for another fat paycheck? I don't get it.
-
the torch comically not being past to Mutt. Let it end there. Not on a high note, but whaterya gonna do? Leave it be. We've had enough senior citizen jokes to last a lifetime. The world does not need an Indy 5, nor does Lucas' wallet.
-
I very much enjoyed Crystal Skull, but it's time to but Indy to rest. If they all don't agree on the directions of the films the series is over. BTW, Indy will always be Steven Spielberg in my eyes. It has more of his fingerprints on it than anyone else's.
-
Yes, that dangerous drunk driver is going to be off the roads and in jail with any luck, which means we won't have to worry about the little shit turning up in Indy 5.
-
By the future, does he mean an army of CG animals? Cuz I have a feeling those weren't Spielberg's idea.
-
The man will not rest until he has destroyed the only 2 good ideas he's ever had. Personally, I felt raped after watching Indy 4. I was outraged, and disgusted at what I was tricked into watching. Looking around the audience, you could see the disappointment and the confusion on peoples faces. It was just all wrong. I even considered walking out (something I NEVER do). Spielberg should chalk this up along with 1942 and Hook as the worst work he's ever done, but then again who can blame him? With that 900 pound Lucas gorilla on his back, Spielberg was always gonna buckle under the weight of that fat fuck and his perverted lust for CGI. Lucas calling himself the future is fucking ironic considering that all of his success as a filmmaker is firmly in the past. George, your a multi-billionaire, just fuck off and sit on your money for the rest of your life and stop ruining movies that we all loved once.
-
if I can deal with the anticipation and let down that was KOTCS. I can't forget how terrible it was. I can't believe that the Mummy Fuckin 3 may just be a better made movie. Depressing. What happened Indy?
-
first, they change the entire focus of the series...originally it was about watching luke become a jedi and save the universe, with the prequels it becomes about watching anakin redeem himself...it also changes the whole concept of a jedi...in the original series, kids walked out believing that anyone could be a jedi with training...we find out in the prequels that it is all genetically based....as a result, a huge plotline from the movie mallrats is tossed right out the window....hey silent bob, you dont have any mitochodolriawatzits, why in the fuck are you trying any jedi mind tricks? rule one of a prequel...dont fuck with the origninal concepts
-
I am on the side that Steven is the one to blame for all the crap parts of KOTCS. I also have to agree with all the hate towards WOTW. I hated everything with the son, especially with him still being alive. I also feel that Lucas proved himself with ROTS, which was hands down awesome. In every pivotal scene, Lucas did not wimp out but pushed the story into darker and darker places. The action scenes where also top notch. I think Steven has been letting us down since Saving Private Ryan (although Munich was kind of badass).
-
They all wanted the past because the PAST FUCKING WORKED. Don't fix it if it ain't broken. We ALL wanted the same formula, but you had to go put onions in the apple pie. Fuck you.
-
It's obvious from CRYSTAL SKULL nobody involved knows what the hell to do with the franchise anymore. I don't want another horrible Indiana Jones movie. JUST... WALK AWAY.
-
SBLAW: STOP BEING LAZY AND WRITE!
-
Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!?!?
-
From what i understand, Ford and Spielberg wanted to do the fantastic Darabont script, instead we got George Lucas' bastardised version with Shia LeBeouf swinging between branches and a total mess of a film. If Spielberg wants to keep the ways of the past that's great, but fact is...its too late, the world is already destroyed..as far as I'm concerned, Indiana Jones is a trilogy, piss off to your pile of cash Lucas
-
Check out the Darabont script which Lucas nixed but Spielberg & Ford both loved. That is a lot worse than KOTCS (which I loved BTW). The saucer men were still in the other script so were the monkeys and the raft/waterfall scenes so anyone saying its all Lucas fault is a crackhead. Read the Ultimate Making Of Indiana Jones book which covers the Indy4 development in great detail and again you will see that Spielberg has lost it and Lucas was the voice of reason. Ford is just out of touch with moviemaking and made a lot of bad career choices. Indy5 is unlikely to ever get made anyway as it took 19 years for them to agree on Indy4!! Spielberg has the next 4 years booked up already and the impression I get from his Cannes media interviews were that even though he said at the end if the fans want more I will give them more I did not feel totally convinced by the way he said it.
-
That Lucas really does live in his own world. I'm sure that he really believes that Spielberg and Ford are insane for disagreeing with his opinions. Imagine what Indy 4 would have been if it wasn't for Spielberg and Ford fighting him. That's a scary thought.
-
If that were true wouldn't they be financial failures?
-
Um, do you mean locked up somewhere? You have him in storage? Is "black director," some medical conditon you have? Did anyone else find the way he said that entirely funny? Who is this black director? Has George given him a name?
-
only have yourself to blame. You basically rewarded the filmmakers with $$$ for making this film. It has made $300 million domestic. They made it because they knew you would show up and give them your cash. They knew there were enough suckers out there and they were right...they'd be right for Indy V too.
-
Stop making movies Lucas. You were never any good at it. You had IDEAS that others ran with and made into moving entertainments. THERE'S A REASON HE HASN'T INVENTED A NEW PROPERTY IN 30 YEARS.On the first one he just did what he wanted?!?!? Yeah, I guess Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan had nothing to do with it.
-
How would you like to have directed Empire or Jedi and then years later this ass-clown goes back and fucks with them? He should be fucking shot.
-

Spielberg wants a good story, Lucas wants CGI gophers.
by flim springfield
Guess who won?
-
But then again, all need to move on to new ground. Steven, please do super hero movie or something else you haven't yet done in film.
-
Lucas is now ready for the madhouse
-
“For your sake, I hope this doesn’t work”- Indy
“Why not?”- Ubermann
“Once I’m a god, I’m sending you straight to hell.”- Indy
“I’m offering you immortality, is that the thanks I get?”- Ubermann
“Ever hear the term, “angry god”? Wait till you see me!”- Indy -
a gungan.
-
Lucas reminds me of those financial analysts who crow about how well the economy is doing because they're looking at growth as the only indicator of the economy's health. You know - the douchebag know-nothings on Fox News who think that growth alone is something that can assess the health of our economy, irrespective of job loss, stagnating wages, underemployment, etc. Lucas only looks at ticket sales (adjusted for inflation, of course). He doesn't give a fuck about quality, story, etc etc. He's just looking at the bottom line, which probably looks mighty good. So he'll keep making dreck that has mass appeal, or at least enough appeal to turn a profit. It's fucking sad.

I saw clips of this at Comic-Con. The good guys summon a pack of yetis to help them fight the bad guys. The yetis start playing football with the bad guys. One yeti kicks a bad guy in the balls, and he goes flying through two poles that look like a field goal, and another yeti actually holds up his arms to signal a touchdown. I'm not kidding.
-
"Really, with the last one, Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic."No fucking joke. You don't say.
-
cause you haven't a fucking clue.
-
The most vitriolic Lucas talkback yet. And you've got it wrong. Spielberg is to balme for the cheesy aspects of Skull. Check out the Complete Making of book factfinders.
-
You have no idea what the future is. All you do is choke your stories with fad technology. Notice how dated Episode I looks? CGI's a tool, it's not the "way of the future." Spielberg knows how to use CGI. You don't. When you get involved with anything, the results are always a mess. Just stop.
-
Take your billions you have raked in from us and just go away. Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic about KOTCS? Really? In which part?
-
NUFF SAID.
-
...George wouldn't have had children, perhaps he wouldn't feel the need to cater so much to the annoying PG-13 crowd. Case-in-point, I was watching "Special Edition" RotJ yesterday and the scene in Jabba's Palace where Sy Snoodles and Co. sing came up. When that random furry CGI thing sings into the camera (BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL IN A STAR WARS MOVIE), my brain hemorrhaged at the remarkable display of stupidity before me.
-
I just don't care what Lucas does next. He and Spielberg really are losing me right now. Spielberg's career is going the way of John Ford or Hitchcock in their last days. INDY IV = FRENZY ?
-
We'll see who is to blame for Indy 4. Not that it was as bad as some of you say it is. But it was not up to par with the others.
-
So the prequels and the fact that Lucas explained the Force "ruined" a Kevin Smith film?
-
Harrison Ford sitting in a nursing home, telling the story of his last adventure.
Then bring in Hugh Jackman to play Indiana Jones - sure, he's younger than Ford was in the last movie, but just forget that that one ever happened. It was really that bad.
Then have Hugh Jackman lose his legs at the end and cut to Ford sitting in a wheelchair, legless.
And...cut.
That's how the fifth movie should go. If Harrison Ford comes back I'm not watching his old wrinkled ass creak around trying to pretend fight people and run around. Really, it's like watching Indiana Jones starring Sean Connery. -
Nuff said.
-
Goddamn it, this bastard just won't fucking quit. Now it's everyone else's fault that fourth movie was FUCKING SHIT?!?!?
Maybe if he could get his head out of his ass long enough -- meh, no point in continuing that sentence. That fucking twat has lost every vestige of talent he ever had, bar counting the piles of fucking loot he made from destroying his life's work, his artistic fucking legacy. Lucas is the enemy of everything that is great in cinema - because he set the standard, revered for three decades, then he purposely fucked it up himself - just to teach the fans a lesson: that he will do what HE wants, which is usually the opposite of what his fans (who made his empire what it fucking is today, thanks to buying everything he threw at them) want, even if it SUCKS FUCKING ASS.
I could happily strangle the life out of that bastard and sleep like a baby. I fucking hate that gizzard bastard. Just fucking retire - you've ruined everything you began. Big hand for you. NOW FUCK OFF. -
CONTEMPORIZE man!
-
Just thought I'd mention a fun little fact that nobody seems to have highlighted in the multitude of arguments on CRYSTAL SKULLS. To put in perspective exactly how pathetically tamed Indy has become, this newest film NEVER had Indy shooting at anyone, much less killing them with a gun. In fact, NOBODY is killed with a gun on screen. Gone are the thrilling gunfights in a Himalayan bar or Shanghai club. Instead we have killer ants. So really, anybody claiming that the 4th film upholds the tradition, please, PLEASE revisit the whole series. I'm not a bloodthirsty psycho, but Indy without a shootout is like StarWars without a lightsabre duel: Idiotic.
-
Steven has been off his game for years...In my humble opinion he has only made four or five great movies in the past twenty years, the rest being incredibly flawed and mediocre, while not nessesarily being bad movies. Lucas, on the other hand just needs to retire.
-
IJ4 is a crappy film but you people are making it seem like its worse than camp cucamonga or some shit like that!!!
-
So what say ye haters to that?Nolan on Lucas, from an article in USA Today: "Come on, he's George Lucas," Nolan says. "I felt like I should have kissed the ring."I add, George Lucas has never done anything wrong. Steven Spielberg is an okay guy. You're all a bunch of retards. Any of given prequel is better than The Dark Knight. This is the truth of everything. Don't bother posting to the contrary. End of argument.
-
The reason we continue to go see Lucas' movies is because we know that his movies were once great and we dare to hope that some measure of that greatness can be recaptured again. I don't want Lucas to stop making movies, I want him to stop making BAD MOVIES.
-
You're preaching to a bunch of people on an internet talkback thread about why they're losers for preaching to each other on an internet talkback thread.
Wow. You're not too fucking clever there, son. Do yourself a favour and take yourself and your post-modern, ironic (in that passe, 1990s SCREAM stylee) ass outside and fuck yourself up. Save the rest of us the trouble. You may think you're being clever - you're in fact just a dull-witted cunt.
Buh-bye. -
let Stephen do whatever the fuck he wants. Clearly, he knows better than you. Indy 4 and the entire fucking Star Wars franchise is proof of that. I'd prefer we all just forgot that Indy 4 even happened. It was huge steaming shitpile by any standard, including Uwe Boll's.
-
INDY IV wishes it was FAMILY PLOT.
-
I forgot about the singing part in ROTJ special edition. Lucas did a great wrong there. That musical number sucked. But that was it. Everything else - absolute perfection!
-
Frank Miller, author of the greatest-fuckin-Batman-story-ever “The Dark Knight Returns”, has given “300” director Zack Snyder the thumbs up to bring his ‘Elderly Caped Crusader’ tale to the big screen.
According to Slashfilm.com, Miller’s comments were made at this past weekend’s Comic Con.
Snyder, who bought Miller’s “300” to the big screen, says he’d be prouder than punch than to bring “Dark Knight Returns” to the multiplex.
“I would love to see Frank Miller’s Dark Knight made into a movie, but that’s just me”, Snyder (at Comic Con to promote “Watchmen”) said.
Nope, it ain’t just you Snyder – Frank wants it, Warner’s Michael Uslan wants it (and that’s a big someone!) and we want it.
“The Dark Knight Returns”, told over 4 issues, is set twenty years in the future, at which time Batman has retired from crime fighting following the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.
Bruce Wayne funds the rehabilitation of Harvey Dent (”Two-Face”), leading to his release from a mental hospital, but upon re-entering society, Dent returns to crime. Wayne dons the Batman costume again and apprehends Dent, but in an increasingly media obsessed society, the populace debates publicly whether Batman is a savior or a menace.
The Joker, along with a psychiatrist, appears on a talk show to discredit Batman. Before he leaves the studio, he murders everyone in sight.
It’s a great story.
Who would you have play the aged Batman? (Clint Eastwood was rumoured at one stage - - but isn’t he just a tad too old?)
What about the Joker? It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Heath Ledger in the part.
It might never happen, but considering the big business “The Dark Knight” is doing at the box-office, and Christopher Nolan’s plan to end his Batman series after the next sequel, Warners are going to be looking for a way to keep the series going for a few more post-Bale years. It’s probably already been discussed.
PLUS: Sam Raimi is doing EVIL DEAD 4! Bring it on!
-
"I’m only going to produce Red Tails — we have a black director..." Can't "black film makers" just be referred to as film makers? George Lucas, white film maker and Steven Spielberg, Jewish director present Indiana Jones starring a bunch of white actors!
-
That stunk. That song was the best part of ROTJ. I'll never forgive him for cutting that song in the special edition. NEVER! Oh, George, how could you? You disgusting animal! But aside from that, everything you've done - absolute perfection.
-
Don't forget about his replacement of the original actor who played old Anakin in the 1983 version with Hayden Christensen. He must have thought we all slept through the third act and couldn't figure out who that old guy was standing next to Yoda and Obi.
-
older batman - Tom Hanks
older joker - Jack Nicholson (playing it serious)
-
This site probably wouldn't even exist without him. Lucas and Spielberg virtually created the commercial viability of genre films and many (hell, most) of the tools that are used to make them. Much of what gets made (and marketed) in the image of their movies is terrible but the good ones owe them a serious debt.
He's not above criticism but the bashing is so ridiculous and ignorant that it's sickening. -
Both are successful, but misunderstand how they got that way. With Ebert, he misunderstood that the show was more than just "two guys talking about movies"- there was a spirit of competition that drove those two men to become better reviewers. As for Lucas, it's the same thing. He owns all his success, to be sure, but he completely misunderstands what is gained from butting heads through collaboration. And what is achieved through competition. It's a necessary part of the process.
-
I can understand Lucas, his love of the 50's, rock n roll, hogs and jalopies, he's always been obssessed with that period so it stands to reason it's where he wanted to take Indy. Another 50's product was alien invasion stories and the red menace. It practically writes itself. And there in lies the problem. I didn't really want to see that movie. What I did want was a continuation of the religious theme, a further exploration of Indy's faith and a classic Spielberg disfunctional family dynamic, that in my opinion would have worked better as a film because it does indeed stay with what's tried and tested, it follows a theme. All Indy 4 did was set up Shia to take over the role rather than make the Indiana Jones legend grow. I think the term "serial adventure" that Lucas likes to throw around was forgotten. In the classic stories, the hero was timeless, he gave the impression of invincibility and that he's be around forever "Indiana Jones will return in the next adventure..." etc etc. Would it be so bad to see Raiders remade over and over again? It's a damn sight better than taking it in a whole new direction George.
-
and rides out the big bang in the trunk of a Pinto... all before the opening credits begin to role!
-
was and always will be the true Anakin to me. But aside from those three stupid choices in ROTJ, George Lucas has done no wrong.
-
The way I see it, Spielberg might now in hindsight realize what a grievous misstep Crystal Skull was, whereas Lucas absolutely does not. That is what that quote indicates to me.However, don't try to pretend that the Crystal Skull debacle is more Lucas' fault than Spielberg's. Both are equally to blame. After 15 years of being told that there would be no Indiana Jones movie until all three principals agreed on the script, they endorsed this script as worthy of the series. Spielberg signed off on that crap just as Lucas and Ford did; he didn't have to do so. Prairie dogs and monkeys, indeed!
-
for the record, I am the biggest Star Wars fan you will ever meet. So my comment above wasn't another "George Lucas raped my childhood" tirade. Lucas MADE my childhood and pretty much defined my life (not exaggerating here)through those movies. But having said that, I think the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the Star Wars prequels would have been better off with more collaboration and input from others, not less. They are all good movies in their own right, but they could have been better. Something was left on the table.
-
I thought you said Indy rides the Bangbus. That would be a memorable fucking movie.
-
Ford is too old to truly hack it (although he still pulled off a lot of the humour), George has fallen in love with CGI as it means he doesn't have to deal with actual people, Speilberg has a man-crush on Shia LeBeouf who isn't the star quality that Speilberg thinks he is.
-
...for directing Duel at 24, Jaws at 28, Encounters at 30, Raiders at 34, Temple of Doom, Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, even that scene from War of the Worlds was the killer moment of that year for me. Just, thank you. Don't read into any of the criticisms, especially not from one-hit Lucas. We are all endebted to you. Some are not worthy of your endlessly renewed genius, or simply amnesiacs. And thank you for still using celluloid. You helped restore Lawrence of Arabia in more ways than one, Sir. Be one with the wind and keep breezing behind the cameras! You are welcome at my well. For a man may make a masterpiece or two, a master stops counting after 6.
-
"which might explain the lackluster/disjointed quality some fans have noticed in CRYSTAL SKULL"
some of the fans??? how about... all of us noticed how crappy the film was. -
explaining to contemporary lucas apologists as to the many ways in which his work of the last quarter century is utter shit is similar to trying to argue the absurdities of fundementalist christianity with one of the flock or trying to explain mixed integers to a dog. in each case, if they were capable of grasping the concept, there'd be no need to explain it to them.
-
For fuck's sake, that's a lot of P's. i myself would more accurately describe Spielberg's recent ouput as Pedestrian, Pandering, Plebian, Pumpernickel, and Pure Piss, but I digress.
-
I think some folks just won't let themselves have fun. Everything has to be realistic (or at least seem that way to them) or it has to be uber-cool and stylize, or dark and morbid. When most of you talkback critics grow up, you'll realize that you were arguing over the stupidest things, and you missed some prime opportunities to just relax and enjoy the movies. And if not that, just not buy tickets to movies you figure you're going to hate. I mean, sheesh, who's the more foolish, the fool or the man who follows him?
-
Indy IV was definitely a let down. It wasn't bad, but it had so much potential that was disgarded. In my honest opinion, it just didn't gel together like the others did. It just felt put together roughly. I was in Peru visiting the wife's family and saw the opening there. There was a lot of laughter, not for the humor, but for the poor research done. They show Nazca as a desert connected to jungle. Sorry, but there is only desert for hundreds of miles. When the market in Nazca was shown, they were playing Mexican music and the "natives" had on clothes people in the mountains wore, not people in the desert. There was also a lot of talk of Mayan language/culture, and they were nowhere close to Peru. Just sloppy things like that made this film seem like it wasn't taken seriously. I think a little less time with the CGI and more thought into the story would have made this a much better film. Like I said, I didn't hate it, but it really did let me down.
-
George wants to make it shitty, and Steven wants to do it right.
-
Chris Nolan: "I don't make movies for myself, I make movies for the audience."
George Lucas: "I make movies for me."
Please no more Indy films. I mostly enjoyed 4, but it's missing some of it's magic. Lucas needs to take a step back. -
You should want another one so that maybe it redeems the frnchise and gives us the Indy we all wanted to see. ESPECIALLY those of you complaining about the implausible aspects of Indy 4. Those didn't quite bother me so much as the rather unimaginitive writing. In all the other Indy movies, clever puzzles are solved by intelligent analysis. In Crystal Skull, you get "How'd ya do this, Ox?" and the solution is always the blunt witted "Use the skull." Use the skull to scare the natives. Use the skull to open the temple gate. Use the skull to bring the aliens to life. They traded good writing for elaborate CG. We should want them to make another one and do it right this time.
-
Seriously Georgey boy, have you completely lost the plot?
-
Realistic? You mean like Star Wars? No, it simply has to be well done, honest and be contextually believable.
-
I always imagined it could be Adam West's Unforgiven except even more transformative than Eastwood's, in which West could channel whatever bitterness he has ever felt in real life into an utterly camp-free Bruce Wayne performance that would shock everyone and be true to Miller's work. Probably too late now. Should Bale do it in old-age makeup opposite Brandon Routh as Superman? Maybe it's unfilmable.
-
No matter who's fault it was!
-
didn't win that battle wholeheartedly :( Lucas should be banned from movie making.
-
Steven: "Let's make a great epic adventure! Really give the audience something to remember!"George: "Fuck that, let's add monkeys and make money! Fuck the audience, all we need is a good opening weekend!" Ford: "Is it time for my meds yet nurse?"George: "Meesa needs more money!"
-
I applaud you for being so eloquent on so undeserving a platform, ubt I fear you cast pearls before swine. Do not judge a man until you walk two moons in his moccasins; yea verily, e'en to the holy Gizzard that doth afflict that Lucas bastard. smite him til he doth cease to exist, say I! Behold! Excelsior!
But seriously... Fun post. Keep 'em coming! -
Lucas pulls some bullshit and put Lindsey Lohan in as Mara Jade in this live action series he's supposedly working on. I think I might really have to take a trip down the Skywalker Ranch with a can of gasoline then...
-
It was a horrible looking movie, like they never left the backlot, which they probably never did. The Dark Knight had a similar budget and looks so much better.
-
People do not want Indy to be a CGI cartoon. Setting it in the 50's with the Ruskies is fine, even including UFOs and such is fine. But using CG for every single stunt and special effect in the film and having Indy do things that are outright cartoonish (like surviving a nuclear explosion and a thousand foot fall by simply crawling inside a refrigerator) killed the movie. Lucas needs to be put down. Hard.
-
Lucas is in the unenviable position of having stretched a franchise (I mean Star Wars) too thin even for its strong resonance among its most dedicated fanbase. Most people, however, aren't that interested. Even people who saw the originals in the theater will come back for each successive iteration, because why not? None of them have been entirely unwatchable, and anyway very rarely do intellectual powerhouses or truly necessary sequels reign at the multiplex. Not that most people don't care, but they don't take it as seriously--or as personally--when a new Lucas production doesn't live up to one he did thirty years ago.
Likewise with Indiana Jones. I agree that the last one turned batshit ridiculous in the last hour or so, but it was worth the price of the ticket to see what those three could do with a nearly twenty-year old franchise. That it turned a profit shows most people were still interested in seeing those characters on another adventure. And it sounds like most people here saw it at least once, too.
Lucas's interview is self-aggrandizing, but that's nothing new, seeing as he's a mainstream filmmaker in Hollywood. He's always been this way, it isn't like he suddenly turned self-satisfied. Film-wise, he made one of the most influential movies of the last thirty years of the Twentieth Century, and was involved, either personally or via technology he had a hand in pioneering, in dozens of other important movies that weren't just about asses in seats and movie popcorn. The guy can blather on about how hard it is having so many creative minds in one room as long as he wants: that doesn't negate what's come before this unfortunate forsaking of quality of content for quality of special effects.
Does this mean I want an Indy 5? No. I'd really rather they not, and in fact, I wasn't that keyed up for the fourth one, either. But as it is, they've given him a decent send-off, and should stop while they're ahead. Lucas and Spielberg were once and maybe still are two of the most creative minds in Hollywood: the notion that they can't do anything but continue decades-old franchises is ludicrous. Try something new, both of you. That's how you made it big. -
Crystal Skull had its moments but most of the time felt like a fake-out. Still, i preferred it to Indy 3
But I'd mortage my house to see an Indy film that recaptured the spirit of Raiders or Temple though. If Lucas and Spielberg of old turned up to that, it could be worth seeing, even with the aging Ford on board.
-
Before you assholes keep defending him.. let's look at the track record after the 1st 3 Star Wars movies:
1.Howard The Duck
2.Episode 1
3.Episode 2
4.Episode 3
And Spielberg pumped up the action scenes in the last one.. and it still sucked!!
5.Crytal Skull... I still want my money back from this one.
How can you still defend him??? -
Only Lucas can take something classic and completely anal rape it. Just like like Star Wars. It doesn't surprise me that Steven wanted to keep it the way it was. Lucas is such a fucking idiot.
-
So he basically singlehandedly destroyed two of our most cherished childhood franchises with his newfangled "make a movie for everyone to enjoy, devoid of all heart and ingenuity" approach and he's trying to spin this into some kind of a "well it sucked cause me and Steven can't agree" issue? I call bullshit.
Anyone who read the Darabont version of Crystal Skull knows that it was a much stronger script (even the waterfalls scene worked...) which honored the origins of the series while taking the franchise into a new direction without it playing like a greatest hits album. The version Geoorge decided to shoot was a hodgepodge of characters and locations from old films without any of the reasons Darabont built in to explain them even being there. He's lost all the things that actually made him a visionary director in the first place - his new films lack heart. I wish he would just stop...

I think I'd rather see another National Treasure film before Indy 5. Though National Treasure was closer to The Da Vinci Code when it came to story, the action/adventure and puzzle solving reminded me of the best of the Indy series. Same thing with certain parts of the Mummy franchise. You know its bad when Indy knockoff films (National Treasure & the Mummy series)are doing it better. Watching Crystal Skull was like seeing an older semi attractive woman trying to compete with todays bombshells.....kind of like Madonna today. I would rather see a spin off starring Shia than another Harrison Ford/Indy film. Fuck it, bring back Short Round and have him and Shia in a buddy pic around the world searching for ancient treasure and chasing international tail.

Lucas made the Indy world. Now wants to turn it into something e
by mr pumblechook
What the fuck is wrong with Lucas?
He made a fantastic story with the 3 Indy films that showed that in a time of great evil, God exist.
Then with Crystal Skull he wanted the story to be that aliens created the universe, until Spielberg said 'stop that shit.' So aliens created the universe and not God? Make your mind up Lucas!
Spielberg is trying to reign in his shit and say, 'we dropped the ball, but i know how to fix it' but that cunt Lucas wants to turn it into some sci-fi shit. Nothing wrong with sci-fi but there was none of that in the first 3.
Lucas, stop being a tosser and let Spielberg make the film -
see above.
-
Just you can come here and join the retarded yet obscenely vocal minority to bash Lucas and everything he's associated with. I laugh at your inability to stop handing Lucas money despite your alleged contempt for him. Pathetic smegma, the lot of you.
-
You fucking ruined Star Wars forever & now you've shafted Indy. Go do a cameo in Beverley Hills Cop 4 & this time die at the fairground.
Prick.

WOW. This reveals George's complete and utter mental break down.
by pixelsmack
So is these article snips you can see George's madness.
1. He thinks he was responsible for Indy1.
2. He thinks Stevens wanting to take Indy back where it was and not to keep going forward with the madness is a BAD idea. -
Totally.

At least to me it's like that one Bond film that wasn't a Bond film where Sean Connery played Bond but at like age 60. Anyway I still think the first three are the only one's and Indy 4 was like a shitty remake. Lucas needs to back off of Indy 5 and let Spielberg do his thing and hopefully Shia will be in jail so they can have a movie with just Indy in it!

ahhhhhh, sweet relief!POWER DUMP PWNAGE!!

At the end of the day, he's one of the few film makers in cinema history to have created a complete, layered, and lasting universe of his ideas. He made special effects people famous. He made films that changed the way movies are made and enjoyed (the summer blockbuster). He directed a "serious" sci fi drama and a teen comedy (both loved and respected). He was not afraid of resting on laurels and used his last 3 directing opportunities to explore new ways of filmmaking (cgi actors, blended super-takes). Kids have gone to bed holding his action figures for decades and that is something probably none of us will ever accomplish. Just saying.

Actually Michael Keaton Would Make A Good Old Joker
by troutmaskreplicant
There were definitely a few moments when Ledger seemed like Beetlejuice.
Who'd make a good old Batman though? Someone like Nick Nolte but not Nick Nolte? -
I'm sorry, I don't quite get the sudden change of subject, but... Nice observation, though it will never happen. Nor will your idea of (I'm saying) Gary Busey as Batman. It would be god-awful.
-
I am so sick of hearing these whiny ass bitches saying "Wahhhh Lucas raped my childhood, wahhhhhh (put any directors name here) raped my memories. Grow the fuck up people. The fact that the prequels were sub-par to the OT DID NOT erase the fact that going to see Return Of The Jedi on opening day, was the single greatest movie experience I have ever had. The atmosphere, the excitement, the thunderous applause that drowned out the movie, that fact that HALF of my High School cut school to go see it. None of that has been raped, it has not been damaged, that memory, and all my memories of the OT are burned into my memory forever. So put down your baby rattles and shut the fuck up, your memories are raped because you let them be raped, because you need something to bitch about. No matter what you may feel about the prequels, love them , hate them, indifferent to them, your memories of the OT has nothing to do with the prequels, unless you are just an idiot and can't remember anything. If you hate the prequels, then you have no excuse. Forget them and remember the good memories you have of the OT. Childhood raping, give me a fucking break.
-
Having Cate Blanchett as the series heavy was worth its weight in gold, but nooooo, they had to have her brain melt. Nice work, Lucas. Right up there with the CGI monkeys. They could have brought her back for the next film like Vader.
Idiots, now they have to find some new villain. It's the Sixties. There are no villains in the Sixties, unless Spalko comes back from the dead and fucks Shia in the ass with and iron-core strap-on.
I bet we'd pay to see that. -
From his post regarding the poor quality of the film War of the Worlds :
"4. One of the worst endings I've ever seen ...What was up with the house in Boston being in perfect condition. 5. I got more scares watching Mars Attacks"
While expounding how it has the 'worst editing' (worst editing ever or just that year? Or just that week?) you actually describe continuity. Fool.
Also, you got more 'scares'. Haha. Did you count em? Do they sell handy dandy scare counter watches at the Lucas-suckoff cons you go to?
Saying Nolan is a film making deity only shows how narrow your scope is.
Hope you get infuriated, do cute widdle Jar Jar roar, and pound your thumbs on mom's keyboard typing up a witty response. Cause that effort will be wasted, I won't reading it, thus I win. :) -
I didn't think Garey Busey. That would be monstrous. But I can't think of any old gruff actors who'd look like they were able to kick ass in their youth, other than Nolte. But that's just off the top of my head. Like there's Stallone...but nooooooooo!
-
haha. You wrote ending, not editing. The tears of laughter in my eyes blurred my vision and I misread.
Still fails to be you, lady. -
What about Richard Nixon? Yes I am joking. I'm actually surprised that the Nixon family hasn't sued Futurama yet. And it looks like one of the Watchmen computer games will feature The Comedian killing those Watergate reporters for Nixon. Charming.

RON PAUL was the only hope for the Republic of the UNITED STATES. i voted for him, and he was the only candidate running on a PEACE and FREEDOM PLATFORM. if you do not comprehend that, then you do not know what a neocon is. Obama AND Mccain are backed by Rothschild and Rockefeller money. Those are the real bad guys, the bankers rule the world.
-
If you look at it from a scriptwriting point of view, there was a serious tension between showing and telling. Consider the reporter scene where they have to explain the aliens coming via the lightning. And they had to explain the electro magnetic pulse idea. And of course the Deus Ex Machina ending was always going to be hard to pull off. There were definitely great ideas and images in it, but it lost me when Tom Cruise ran through the street Mission Impossible style amazingly avoiding the death rays.
-
otherwise he would shut his mouth. He's obnoxious and doesnt give a fuck
-
Lucas is the ouroboros. He (and others, never short-change the folks who were part of Indy 1-3, SW 4-6) made something great, and now he's back to tear it all down. This is an honest to goodness tragedy, poetic really. I guess Indy 5 will have Shia resurrecting the corpse of his poppa to fight terrorists in Afghanistan...

LOL ! C;mon guys ! After they made STAR TREK V - they apologized
by matthooper
You can't tell me you want it all to end here .... there's still Paul Haggis out there somewhere. He alone could bring it all back up to speed. If not .. then hell ... I'll do it !
ME ! The great and secret weapon which could make better every misaligned motion picture in history, with the exception of Leonard Part 6.
I think at this point what we all want is to see something more along the lines of an anthology, wherein various versions of Indiana Jones stories are told. Like a Heavy Metal movie with Indiana Jones. That way everyone will learn to appreciate LOL movies like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Whatchamacallit.
Be well, George. -
Instead of wasting another 10 bucks on another Lucas shitfest, use that money to watch Dark Knight again. The last 3 Star Wars movies were cartoons anyway.. so what makes the new one so different?
-
Loking back on it, every Indy film was stylistically, and technologically different, from one another. Raiders...just incredible stunt work and set pieces with special effects just at the end. Temple of Doom...much more stunt work and much darker. More special effects and the concepts were more far fetched. Last Crusade...more believable than TOD, with a perfect blend of action, special effects use, drama, comedy, and mystery. Not to mention the best musical score out of the 3 films so far. Crystal skull, very very different from the other 3, which is fine by me...The fact that they tried to emulate the "feel" of the first 3 is what killed it. They should have just made a new Indy movie without the obstacle of getting the cinematography or the texture perfect. Liked the alien concept...far fetched like TOD. Richard Roeper said it best when he said it felt like an old rock band getting back together for a reunion tour.
I respect Spielberg and Lucas for taking a huge risk with this film...It could have been a lot more disasterous. I hope they do an Indy 5, and I hope they make it totally different than the rest of them. Mabey even Kill Indy off at the end so that Lucas can put to rest his phantasmagorical ideas and just let Spielberg make quality films that come from his own brain. BTW, does anybody know when Innerstellar is supposed to start filming? -
And also, everybody talks about Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford. Nobody mentions John Williams...he just about made these movies as successful as they are with the perfect score. And if they DO do an Indy 5, it better be soon, cause Williams will be pushing 80.

Putzes like "loserguy3000" must either be on the Lucasfilm payroll or have a goiter fetish to defend Lucas at this point, especially after an interview like that.
Although you Lucas asskissers are right about one thing: if any of the "haters" go to see the CGI Clone Wars thing, they deserve to be mocked. -
We don't want CGI monkies swining from vines George. That isn't what made the original Indy movies work. Go away. You turned Star Wars into a CGI crap fest and you tried to do the same thing to Indy. Lucky that Spielberg was there to keep your shit in check. Turn the franchise over to Spielberg and go the hell away. The last 3 movies you made sucked and if they didn't have "Star Wars" in the title they would have bombed and the parts of Indy 4 that you were involved in (the gopher in the begining, Shia's charachter and the idea of Indy having a son, the CGI monkeys) all sucked and sucked badly. Go away and stop living in the past. Make a new film and have all the CGI idiocy that you want, I and a majority of movie goers will happily pass. Outside of Star Wars and Indy (the best parts of which you had little to do with) you've done nothing.
-
You're a slimball
-
It's what happens when rich people surround themselves with yes men.
-
i dont think yes men are really an issue with lucas, the problem is that he's the big boss, its his company and his money used to finance mostly, there's nobody hire up than him in the chain of command so what he says goes, for good or bad. people could say what they want but in the end, its his decision, he has nobody to answer to.
-
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't lackluster and disjointed...it was shitty and stupid!
-
That really pissed me off. Steven’s in the past because he knows what the Hell works and what doesn't, you stupid, arrogant dumbass. I swear, Lucas has turned into such a noob.
-
I can explain the "black director" thing (though I can't explain any of the other Lucass horeshit).
Race-baiting assholes like Jesse Jackson attacked Spielberg for directing The Color Purple, and later for Amistad. You can bet some numbnutz like Spike Lee would jump at the chance for publicity and attack Lucas if he directed Red Tails.
Advice for Lucas: Keep Ahmed Best FAR away from this movie. -
Can ya feel the love for ya Georgie?! Now the true reason on why Indy 4 sucks ass so fucking hard. So Stevie wanted to keep things old-school and Georgie “Porkchop Sandwiches” wants to go into “the future!” Yeah, like we can’t see how your STAR WARS legacy is being raped and torn then have an Owe Boll-style Frankenstein piecing together the shit that has no longer much attention to the general audience. No wonder Steven wasn’t enthusiastic—he knew Indy 4 was crap! Fuck! In the past 10 years, what did Lucas make OTHER than a Star War movie…that was good??? Hell, I can’t remember a fucking single movie! No one single fucking movie that didn’t have connections with Star Wars! Then you go after Indy, which is one of the greatest and fun franchise there was and you fucking FX the shit out of it! The story sucked Jar Jar’s ass! The scenes were just way too much, even for and Indy movie! Hell, Indy 4 had the dubious distinction of giving the movie world the term “Nuked the fridge!” Not since Happy Days(and wasn’t that like 20yrs ago?!?) had a negative term come out of something that WAS so great! Every one could tell something was wrong with the whole feel and look of Indy 4 and all eyes are you on Lucas the Hutt! Oh Hell no! You fucked up Star Wars, and now your going after Indy?!?! Lucas you’re a fucking 1-hit wonder and nothing more! Star War was a beautiful fluke that you couldn’t turn into your own Disneyland. That would have been great but no! Your blithering idiot and a fucking hack now (at least in my eyes!) Retire. Pass the reign to some one that truly and sincerely cares about making Star Wars and Indy movies. Go wallow in your pool of money and leave the movie ideas to people that PROVE that they can do it. cough*Del Toro, Jackson, Nolan*cough
-
I feel like, why even have talkbacks?
-
He showed talent as Jar Jar, even though it wasn't the type of character fanboys wanted. He demonstrated craft as an actor in putting that shit together. If Lucas thinks he's reliable, Best should have a shot to get some notice as a realistic character. Star Wars is usually a don't-blame-the-actors zone so Best shouldn't be singled out.

That would be the title if left up to Lucas these days. Thanks to SPEILBERG and FORD for pounding a little sense into the old man.
-
I just don't think Lucas should give the "George Lucas is a racist" people any ammo, especially with this project.
Fair or not, Ahmed has been branded this century's Stepin Fetchit. -

-
If the new Tintin film kicked KOTCS's ass. That would be weirder and more irritating than the Mummy 3 being better.
-
Like I said, Crystal Skull was a disaster on a fundamental level. That script was a dead end abomination long before the cameras rolled. It took all three of them to sign off, so all three are equally to blame. Whether Ford and Spielberg kept Lucas "in check" once the cameras started rolling is largely moot. It certainly doesn't show on the screen.

And all jackasses decrying me and those like me as whiners...
by darthcorleone
I love the original three Star Wars films. I love the original three Indiana Jones movies. I like many things about the prequels. I also have problems with them. I have major problems with the revisionist Special Editions, and I loathe Crystal Skull. Just because I continue to give Lucas money does not disqualify me from offering constructive criticism. Just because I hold out hope that Lucas will come to his senses and recapture some of his original storytelling magic, does not mean I should shut my mouth. If anything, I think I am more entitled to speak. So fuck off to those who say otherwise. There's no hypocrisy here.

I think Lucas's heart was ripped out of his chest by Mulah Rham.
by cinemajerk
Seriously. Lucas has NO heart. He's all hi tech.
He said Spielberg wanted to go back to the past? You mean to what WORKED GEORGE? TO what made Indy films magical to watch?
George has become a CG version of his former self. Soulless.
Lucas should BOW to Speilbergs magic humanistic touch and SHUT THE F UP!
Lucas CANNOT direct actors! He lives in a CG world. -
Now that he's in trouble AGAIN. What are the chances that he goes to jail, gets anally raped, or do an Indy 5 film?! I say the first two, I don't know about yall though. I think that if he continues to go down that Lindsey Lohan path, his ass will be finished. He'll probably end up going crazy and do something really out of this world. He's a wild child as they say. lol
-
George Lucas has never been in the same league as the 'Berg.
-
Sorry but Steven has made dozens of films/movies that are better than your last four attempts George. Perhaps you should snap out of it.
-
are evident in the film. Indy 4 was a mess. Clearly not what it could've/should've been. And I'm guessing "I'm in the future" means he wants Shia as the new Indy? I don't have anything against Shia but he doesn't have what it takes to carry that frachise.
-
Which I can only guess was an attempt to not have Temple of Doom be the worst one why not go ahead and do another. I mean obviously Speilberg didn't want his wife to have been in the most horrible Indy film and Foord was just cashing a check while Lucas wants us all to think fondly of his Star Wars prequels so he made Krystal Skull to show us what terrible additions to famous films really looks like so why not continue. We can have part five, worse then part four, then followed up by part six where Foord is completely gone and Shia comes riding in as Indy Jr. Can't wait!

by industrykiller!
Guys we should be pitying this has been at this point. Yeah he's a billionaire so i dont pity him in that respect. But he wants to be a filmmaker and anyone who knows anything about film thinks him a complete joke while he sticks his fingers in his ears and goes lalalala! I mean come on he's a silly old man who has completely lost touch with the filmmaking community. He hasnt been involved in anything worthwhile since like Labyrinth (and he was just the money man there) and it's pretty clear his filmmaking faculties have completely abandoned him. He also alienates two of his most powerful friends constantly and I doubt either of them would care to touch Indy again after the indefensible mess that was the last film. He's just a crazy old narcissist, declaring himself the future as everyone stares blankly. Just let him scream and yell just like Macbeth, alone in Dunsinane, full of his former greatness, waiting to die.
-
Indy IV sucked, and obviously thanks to Lucas. George can't snap out of it. He's gone. He lost it decades ago. Steven, get as far away from George as possible. You're also losing your mojo.
-
Nothing more interesting that seeing two foundations of the current film industry clashing like this. I never really saw personal differences as something of a threat between these two. On any other day, with any other opponent, Spielberg is victor... but unfortunately for teh Beard, this isn't any other day. This is Lucas and the Force we're talking about here. That's a challenge and a half.
-

-
None at all.
-
Just the fact that there is a phrase "Phantom Menace bad" tells you how out of touch George Lucas has become. This article makes it abundantly clear that the weaknesses of Indy 4 can be laid squarely at Lucas' feet. We really need to push Lucas out of the process and turn the franchise over to Spielberg.
-
and what about the new star wars trilogy mr lucas?
i think you did that all by yourself, didnt you? so why was such a crapfest? just asking.. :) -
Lucas started doing that as far back as The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, making Darth Vader Luke's father is a cool concept, it's just a shame that he didn't think of it when he originally made the first Star Wars. It was very clear in SW that Darth and Anakin were two separate people, and SW had to be re-edited to accommodate Lucas' after-the-fact brain storm for TESB's shock ending.
-
.... you'll disappoint me.
-
Indy 4 was the send off. Thank you, but no.
-
I got nothing to add.
-
"I’m only going to produce Red Tails — we have a black director —"? That was fairly ridiculous, even given what this guy did with the Phantom Menace. I think the 80's is where I prefer to keep Mr. Lucas for my memories.
-
It's retarded to discuss it. Indy 4 sucked balls, War of the Worlds kicked ass. Lucas is still a genius he just feels responsible for maintaining this big empire he created, that's why he's rehashing all these properties again and again.
-
Lucas you haven't been involved in a good film for rather a long time... See a pattern?

THINK FOR YOUR SELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by illuminate
ALL Fantasy/Sci-Fi Fans,
Right when Indy 4 came out I was one of the only people saying that it was pure unrealistic crap when everyone and I mean EVERYONE was saying that it was a fun popcorn movie.
Now that the word has gotten out that it is TRUELY garbage THEN everyone starts bashing it.
I was one of the first to say that Batman and Robin sucked and no one agreed with me right when it came and then later on everyone was bashing it after the word got out.
THIS TELLS ME THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE TOOLS WHICH IS A SHAME.
Also, let's be fair.
There was nothing wrong with the Sci-Fi aliens even though it is new to Indy and Shia was the only good actor in it. Everything about the story and plot was great. THINK ABOUT IT. All that was missing was the realism. If Indy 4 had been more realistic than nobody would have a problem with it. Just like how short and wimpy Micheal Keaton played Batman. Everyone said he is not the tall masculine guy that Batman should have been but, because the drama of Batman 89 did not have any of the campiness of the 60's show and Keaton played Batman Dark and said then everyone loved him as Batman. Also, The Dark Knight is awesome.
Back to my point Some jerk was saying that Indy takes place in a fantasy world so there can't be realism. Well, the Dark Knight proved that there can be realistic acting and drama in a fantasy world. The Dark Knight is what Kingdom of the Crystal skull should have been.
Spielberg owes us one. Indy 4 is going to be my worst memory of this summer and it is the biggest steaming piece of shit that Spielberg ever made. I hope he makes a 5th to make up for this.

REPLACE FORD. HE IS A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by illuminate
Also,
Harrison Ford is an arrogant jerk. I saw some of his interviews of the years when he is huffing and puffing like he is to good to be giving interviews.
Back when Harrison Ford was on top with Air Force One and still feeding off of the Fugitive he kept on telling Lucas he didn't want to do Indy 4. Then when Ford's career turned to crap he then said he begs Lucas to do Indy 4.
Ford is an arrogant Jerk. What tops it all off is that once Lucas agreed to it Ford should have given Indy his all. Instead we all know Ford phoned in the fakest performance ever. Shia made ford look like one of those fools on American Idol.
The only reason ford is a star at all is because of Lucas casting him in two trilogies.
Shia should take over for the next film. Shia has the star power with Transformers.
One last thing, If Lucas wants to take Indy in Different directions than he should be allowed to since he created Indy. But, it absolutely has to be a realistic.
I can't believe that two of the biggest legends of all did not learn from Batman and Robin, that campy/unrealism does not work in a fantasy film. Every single fan person out there has been YELLING FOR YEARS about how Batman and Robin and how it will remain one of the worst films ever and then Speilberg and Lucas go and make a clone called Indy 4. -

Keep Shia away from the booze and cars, then get Ford on board
by monkey_king
and supply him with that human growth hormone stuff Stallone got busted with.
-
When you are at the top of your game with exciting new concepts like Raiders and a New Hope then that's fine YOU are the visionary but when you're now an old dude who's trying to recapture the magic and failing dismally you really should listen when folk are telling you the stuff you are coming up with is shit!!! You fathered some of the most iconic characters and movie worlds ever seen, doesn't mean you should still be whoring them into the ground like knackered old prostitutes! STOP tinkering with STARWARS George and let Indy retire because the kids might fall for it but not for much longer!
I would say why don't you try something new but you did and we got Willow and Howard the Duck!Let go Lucas, someone use the force and make him let go... -
But it ain't Lucas who has the major hots for having Shia in every fucking movie he has everything to do with. That would be the Berg. Which leads me to think that, if Lucas fucks off (as he should) and leaves the INDY franchise to the Berg, there's an outside chance the next movie will be MUTT WILLIAMS AND THE FORTRESS OF MEH SUCKAGE. Do we really want that?
Fuck STAR WARS. Fuck INDY. I've thrown out my prequels shit, and it'll be a cold day in Hell before I buy KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULLFUCK on DVD. They've had their money out of me, they won't get a fucking penny more. This talkbacker has LEARNED from the Indy 4 experience.
School yourselves, motherfuckers! DON'T WATCH THE CLONE WARS ON THE BIG SCREEN! It's the only way to stop them! -
See, now I actually LIKED Willow and Howard the Duck. Lea Thompson wants some quack lovin'...
WILLOW was fun, and showed Kilmer was more than just Iceman, and HOWARD was just so daft it was funny. Jeffrey Jones was great in it though, and it's always funny watching Tim Robbins make an ass of himself like in that movie. They're not so bad.
I'd watch either WILLOW or HOWARD a hundred times over before I put my eyeballs through the cinematic shitfest that was the Prequel trilogy again. FUCK YOU, LUCAS!!! -
Ah toe meet toe peechee keene, bitch.
-
Here's a simple, simple fact...
George Lucas was the PRODUCER. Steven Spielberg was the DIRECTOR. Ultimately, the DIRECTOR is responsible for a movie, especially someone with Spielberg's clout (as in, he could have said a simple "no".) Get over yourselves! Yes, the movie was pretty terrible, but does it all hang on GL's shoulders? HELL NO! Ford agreed to it, as did Spielberg, so shove it, gobshites! -
That's the greatest pile of shit that's ever been put to keyboard. Go piss up a flagpole.
-
Look at questionably the worst moment in Indy4, Marion driving an X tonne truck off a cliff on purpose (with a stupid grin on her face)! She's basically doing something that will almost certainly kill them, and she does it on PURPOSE without an ounce of fear! Look at Darabonts original script (which Lucas turned down and then just used most of) and she does it by accident... Small difference, but a BIG difference!
Lucas has no clue any more! He's lost all sense of connection with what makes a good solid film... Everything he touches now he damages! -
How on earth do you put linefeeds in
Attempt 1
Attempt 2 -
Was a good movie. Sure, there was some sucky dialogue and acting. But the overall effect was devastating. Watching a good guy turn bad, while a republic turns into a dictatorship. Truly ambitious stuff.
-
Yeah. I also love snot and boogers all over my clothes.
-
the "Emperor" pun in that article is apt - I trust that fat fuck about as far as I can throw him!
Maybe Coppola could forgive him but I cannot. He turned into the EXACT same bullshit producer he was trying to get away from all those years ago - even in this interview, all he can think of is HOW MUCH MONEY did my film make -
And he did not on Indy 4... and Raiders is a classic and Indy 4 is a summer sequel of 2008. Clearly, Lucas needs more control.
-
the family adventure! mum and dad save the universe! and you thought your parents- eh .. can't be bothered.
-
Anytime George Lucas utters a line in an interview that AICN knows will get a rise out of the whiny fanboys, it runs with it as an actual story. Why? Because Harry and the gang know it will generate traffic. Because the same haters will ALWAYS come on and the subsequent thread will be among the most frequented for three or four days running. And it's always: "Lucas won't get my money any more!" And, of course, somehow the prequels and "Indy" always clear $300 million US and another $400 million foreign and go on to rule DVD sales. My favorite whine? Those who write: "Lucas isn't Star Wars! Gary Kurtz and Leigh Brackett are Star Wars!" Truly pathetic. For all you haters, my wish for you is that you somehow procreate and, in a few years, are forced to watch all of the Lucas catalog with your little ones who will love Jar Jar, Ewoks, and Tarzan Shia.
-
Just saying.
-
You guys just proved my point... I'll spell it out as obviously you can't read - SPIELBERG COULD HAVE SAID NO. As director, you get to choose the films you want to do! There didn't have to be an Indy 4. And Marion driving off the cliff in the jeep was a DIRECTORIAL decision - now, the freakin' aliens, well... THAT'S a different story...
-
Don't do another movie. Open up a flannel shirt factory instead.
-
Remember at last years comic con when they had a video link up to the KOTCS set and the Berg and Ford told us they were making the greatest thing ever? Lying monkeys. If you watch it again now you can actually see Fords nose start to grow.
-
Lucas, you ass.
-
While Indy IV did not suck, it disappointed on so many levels.
-
He is looking for his immortality. This involves children and aliens.
-
the Rabbitohs!!!
-
...Actually, for me it was Empire and Raiders that made my blossom flower, my jaw drop, my senses overload producing a sugary mess (caramel popcorn-related: no hormones yet at that time). I completely agree: whenever I pop an OT episode, I disregard the tweaks and fall back to those days of neverending discovery, of ceaseless excitement. Great films are like that: no matter how familiar they might be, they always seem to tower over you. That goes for any classic, even the more intimate ones. No rape was ever commited. However, I respectfully mourn the great talent of Irvin Kershner (whom Lucas criticized on set apparently).
And to be fully honest, I have not seen Indy and the Lord of the Repetitive Pantomime with Serpentine Legs because the title didn’t come off my lips gracefully enough and I did not want to shame myself. That is called control. In the Far Orient, they call it wu wei. Tintin and Interstellar, folks: wait and watch.
-
But I'm guessing George is to blame for everything else that was wrong with IV. Shooting at real locations would have helped so much. I saw the commercials for Clone Wars and it looked really bad. I mean, come on, Star Wars fan or not, you can't look at that and tell me it has any connection with the Han, Luke and Leia we know and love.
-
He created this universe that he just can't leave anymore. Kind of like a guy who owns a parking lot and has to sit in that little booth all his days, raking in a fortune. Trapped.
Thanks George. Were pretty hard on you but thanks for Star Wars, Raiders, Graffiti, Willow and THX.
I'm not sure if he should make another Indy flick. Too many people have their own expectations making it harder and harder to fulfill. Do something new. -
...post-OT... well, he did create the mother of all effects studios and he nursed this little animation studio until it was technically ripe and sold it to Steve Jobs (thank you Lord!) so that PIXAR could fly away on its own wings... to never land again. So George, water under bridges and all, if I had one advice: tackle something personal, even autobiographical, no effects, just characters. Go Bergman on us, go Altman, go Cassavetes, go where you are not supposed to and where you’re probably reluctant to take the first step. Go back to 1962. Take the road less travelled and then your words may fall on more attentive -and respectful- ears. Your imagination is not something to be made into a punchline, respect it and you will be respected. Sometimes old wells carry the freshest water. Go underground, travel the womb of the great mountain and spring back to the surface. Only then, will you enjoy the admirative silence you crave to hear anew. Be a river to your people, not an ocean of memories!
-
I just came buckets.
-
cried buckets. I just *cried* buckets. Tee-hee...
-
And AICN will always find a way to stoke that hate. Remember the stories posted on here about how Lucas was going to make the whip digital and Harrison Ford was going to quit as a result? Remember the one story posted that Lucas was fed up with the different screenplay drafts and would be writing "Indy IV" himself? Leading up to "Indy IV," everyone was bitching about Ford's age and the casting of Shia LeBeouf. In the finished film, Ford proved he still had it and Shia was solid. So, then ... egads, where do we put out hate? Oh, yeah. Let's fixate on the 10 seconds of CGI gophers in the film. Or the alien/crystal skull McGuffin, which was in keeping with the '50s time period. What's this about not shooting on location? Most of the film was shot on locations in Hawaii, Connecticut, etc. with some ILM enhancement to scenes like the jungle chase and the end temple. Much more practical than finding some old ruins and trying to film on that while warding off drunken tourists. News flash. The Well of the Souls, the Map Room, the Opening of the Ark -- all studio sets back in the day with FX added.
-
Spielberg does Indy 5 and Lucas does Mutt 1.
-
Scorin' chicks and drinkin' big.
-
Like those CGI monkeys? (shudder) Look, I actually enjoyed Crystal Skull. I didn't hate it at all. It'll go in my dvd collection and everything. But it's not a classic by any means and I really wished it was. It should have been a classic, man. If you're going to make the last Indiana Jones movie, why make it as good as a pretty good summer flick? Why not make it as good, if not better than the original? I feel that if they shot the Darabont script that it could have been a classic, and it really bums me out that not only could Lucas not see that (he rejected the script, so I'm blaming him entirely), but that nobody had the balls to try and do anything to give the "OK" on the script. If I was Speilberg or Ford, I would have signed away all financial rights to the DVD sales just to get the absloute best version of that movie made as possible. Instead we kinda got this half-assed compromise between a good movie and Lucas' "let's make this for 4 year olds" ideas.
-
Way better than TOD and better than Last Crusade. Not nearly as good as ROTLA.
TOD was cheesy and Kate Capshaw took a shit on the film.
Last Crusade was really good but had some seriously bad special effects. -
Glad to see there is someone else here who still uses their brain. ROTJ was not my fav of the OT, but as far as movie going experiences go, it was incredible. Star Wars (1977) was my favorite. But the experience of ROTJ was simply mind blowing. But I will say that when I watch any of the OT, I still get that feeling that I got when I first saw them, I don't think about anything else. Too bad nobody else seems to know how to do that, instead, everyone whines about a raped childhood. Pathetic.
-
Seriously, either the guy phoned in that piece of shit that was SKULL or he has lost his touch in a major way.
If Lucas is right and Spielberg did this without much enthusiasm, I would have rather had Spielberg just man up and make a stand for quality and/or a project he believed in. Instead, we got a warmed-over reunion tour that in my opinion was the worst big-budget film I've seen in years. Sub-par action-y flicks like TRANSFORMERS, THE MUMMY, and NATIONAL TREASURE 2 were superior to the pile of shit that was SKULL. -
Lucas - "I’m in the future"
I mean come on, the old man is not really there is he? To think he's in the future looking on to the next one?!I have to admit that I'm as much of a fan of Indy as the next guy, but the last one, with the whole "He's your son.." thing, come on... Could've thought of something original... They could've track down Jonathan Ke Quan he would've been far better than Shia.If you bring back the original girl, bring back the best character that made Indy 2 come to life. Have him as if he followed Indy's footsteps and need him to get something.. anything... As far as the movie 6.5/10... Wasn't that bad, but the whole alien thing and having copied the first X-File movie in the end was weak, very Jar Jar Binks weak... Before that scene I gave it an 8.5/10. -
It is without a doubt a flawed film. If it wasn't Indiana Jones, I probably would not even care about it. The biggest flaws....There were too many characters that didn't really go anywhere and Indy spent too much time not doing anything. Compare how Indiana Jones was treated in this film to how Rambo was treated in the newest Rambo film. Rambo was important to that film, Indy just seemed like he was along for the ride in Crystal Skull.....The lighting was awful. I don't see how making everything extremely bright emulates the work of Douglas Slocombe, because his stuff had a gritty look to it, this stuff looked like it belonged in a Michael Bay film....Uneven tone. It wasn't sure if it wanted to be an over the top action film like TOD, or a Daddy/Son outing like Last Cruasade. The whole realationship between Mutt and Indy seemed forced at best, unlike the relationship from Last Crusade which even though it was an Abbott and Costello routine, at least felt genuine, this just seemed undeveloped, and don't even get me started on Marion....All this being said I enjoyed the film (amazingly for the moments like the fridge nuking, the jungle jeep chase, the ants, just seeing Indy back). I think it could've been a better film had it been rewritten, because as it stands its an okay film, but it could've been great film.
-
I guess that's why post Willow he's given us the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Radioland Murders, Star Wars Special Editions, Star Wars The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Star Wars The Clone Wars, and coming soon Star Wars 3-D. Where is the artist who gave us THX and American Grafitti???? This guy is the king of the badly done re-hash.
-
in Indy 5?
-
I don't get the alien hate either. It's a perfect fit for the time period of the movie. Yes the monkeys and the groundhogs were a bit silly but they are washed out from amazing scenes like AREA 51, MOTORCYCLE CHASE (BEST PART OF THE FILM), JEEP CHASE IN THE JUNGLE, KILLER ANTS, ETC. Aliens were all the rave back then and it was a perfect story!!!!
-
for Crystal Skull, since they felt the need to apologize for the far superior Temple of Doom?
-
Spielberg gets Indy and is keeping it the way it was Lucas is trying to Phantom Menace it ... he just doesn't get that he doesn't get it
-
"Let it go Georgie, let it go." Seriously though, there is nowhere to go from here, unless we're going to get the adventures of Mutt flipping SUVs over in downtown LA.
-
Are they on clearance yet. Kind of reminds me how people bought up all those Phantom Menace toys before it was released, and then they sort of sat on the shelves after its release.
-
its comments like these that make the hate in my blood boil. You've raped my childhood with your CGI and weak storytelling. If they make another indy, it should be without any input from you, but that will never happen. sometimes you have to take a step backwards in order to move forward.
-
But instead of Rosebud, he's going to say "Jar Jar" when he drops the Hoth snowglobe.
-
I can't find it anywhere ...

the toys aren't selling bcuz of the shitty faces an no necks

-
Ask Steve Sansweet. He's probably throwing them on the Chinese assembly line as we speak.
-
He has to put up with Speilberg's man-crush on Shia LeBeouf. Has Speilberg done anything lately that isn't involved with Shia? Disturbia, Transformers, Indy 4. Speilberg is convinced this turd is the next big star that he seems to create roles in movies for him. I'd rather have Short Round from Temple of Doom back in the next Indy movie than Shia.
As for Lucas, I will give the guy a free pass until the end of time for giving us the first Star Wars trilogy and the first Indiana Jones Trilogy. He clearly has lost the magic that he once had back in the 70s and 80s, but I can't hate him for the crap he puts on the screen now. -
...but love knows no distance, temporal or otherwise. A relationship with a movie can be an amorous one. Like a love story, you should always cherish the highs rather than dwell on the lows (especially with your first love). It's the little flaws that makes it accessible to us mere mortals, us unworthy lovers. So, while no corrections were needed on the OT -perfection being unattainable, according to B Wilder- one can disregard the grotesque face-lift and concentrate on those eyes: still burning bright, beyond the speed of light... like an old, battered and priceless Falcon. To paraphrase Rick: we'll always Dagobah.
-
on a stick.
-
When...does Mr. Lucas' arrogance know no boundaries? All of his movies are mediocre at best. And yes that includes the original Star Wars trilogy. The prequels sucked ass. Now this moron is insulting Steven Speilburg?
-
Raped my childhood....WAHHHHHHHHH *sniff sniff* WAHHHHHHHHHH
Christ grow up already with the raping my childhood shit, it's really pathetic. -
Do some of you silly fucks live in a bubble or something? again and again, Lucas gets pilloried for the poor moments of Indy 4. if some of you clowns had brothered to research the production (and its well documented in making of books, old scripts, etc), you would find that Lucas isn't responsible for most of the crap you attribute to him, but actually most of the memorable sequences. as for that darabont script; it wasn't all that. many parts of it were significantly poorer than the final film, not to mention people claiming lucas stole stuff from it and used it anyway is highly misleading - darabont didn't come up with these things, they were created by lucas and have been forced into EVERY draft of the script since the early 90's. now lucas ain't flawless, but the amount of misplaced aggression here is staggering and frankly, just sad. many of you should do some research into what you're talking about, but its like communicating to a brick wall. May Lucas consume you all with his giant, scrotal neck sack!
-
Those action sequences were so far below the standard set by the originals in energy, inventiveness, momentum, and attention to detail that it was embarassing. The story was fine, the actors were doing a good job playing good characters, but it was Spielberg who sunk the ship with that phoned in directorial job. It felt down there on a Rob Cohen or Roland Emmerich level.
-
You utter utter truncheon!
-
So Spielberg actually did say "Fine George. Whatever." That's exactly what I got from the film.
-
but I suffocated to death even before I was incinerated and my irradiated ashes were scattered in the wind
-
"nuking the fridge" has entered the lexicon, and wikipedia has an entry for it.
-
why parts of the movie didn't work. Indiana Jones IS NOT ABOUT THE FUTURE. Its about the past. Its ALWAYS been a period piece.
This guy ruined what could have been a very great movie. I honestly hope that Ford and Spielberg simply refuse to do more of these movies unless Lucas surrenders script control. -
utterly fucking stupid. worse than the swinging SHia, worse than the nuked fridge. i stopped caring for the movie at all when they went over the three huge waterfalls without a scratch.
-
The man's got a pretty good track record with this movie thing. While some of your choices over the last decade or so have been...I'll say...questionable? Why does "being in the future" necessitate crapping on our childhoods, George?!? Why? We want to love you!
-
They jumped out of an airplane with a raft in TOD and landed on a mountain and then flew off a cliff into a river. But that's okay and the waterfall scene in KOTCS is stupid????
Y'all forgot what an Indy movie is all about. -
Fist of all, I consider myself a hardcore Generation 1 Transformers fan. I'm talking a born-in-1980 owned every toy as a kid, owns the entire G-1 box set fanatic G1 guy. And unlike other self-proclaimed fans of G1, I feel that Spielberg/Bay's Transformers was the second greatest thing ever to happen to G-1, just behind its very inception. The common gripes I can all write off completely. "Too many humans." "Didn't like the busy designs." "Didn't like them changing the original character vehicle modes." "Didn't like flames on Optimus." What the more unrealistic geeks needed to realize is that Spielberg had the good judgment to choose Michael Bay, who could objectively make a film people would actually WATCH, while keeping the core essence of G1. Bay had to walk a tightrope to please the fans and make a movie that would come in under budget - and introduce it to a whole 'nother generation of fans, AND not seem like a hokey 1984 kid's show. So I don't believe Spielberg was really behind the shitty aspects of Indy 4. It had to be Lucas, because I honestly believe Spielberg still has it.
-
Jurassic Park 4? ME.
-
at the very end it says on one of them and cant remember which...based on characters created by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Story by Lawrence Kasdan. If Lucas had decided. old age ruled Slocombe out of Crystal skull. He was born in 1913. Lucas wrote the story for the Crusade with Menno Meyjes. Jeffrey Boam wrote the screenplay. If kasdan and Kauffman had comeback for the Indy 4 the story might have been a lot better. They all could come back for the the 5th one.
-
The problem is that clearly Lucas thinks he's too good to collaborate with other writers now. Clearly, the quotes in the article indicate he's not willing to collab with experienced hands like Ford and Spielberg. Lucas wants it his way or the highway and until that changes, I'll keep hitchhiking my way out of Lucasville.
-
Indy IV was piss poor. The box-office notwithstanding. Can't say I'm interested in another one, but it couldn't be worse than #4, right? Right???
-
Raiders, temple of Doom and Last crusade. Temple of Doom is the only entry not written by Kasdan and Kauffman and lucas. Spielerg and Lucas have cameos.
-
I think we know which of the haters are full of shit.
-
Well Doh! Steven knew he had a turkey in his hands. Out of all the 6 Star wars movies, the best 2 were the ones Lucas didn't direct. Spielberg's track record speaks for itself. If Lucas wants a successful continuation of the franchise, he should be man enough to step back and let his buddy take the reigns.
-
deepend his friendship with ford and The berg admitted that prior to making Skull. they werent great friends. The berg has traits of Apsbergers Syndrome. ITs called High functioning Autism. The berg is very bright but he finds it very hard to socialise. Seemingly so does ford.
-
Freaks and it will be impossible for anyone to say George your wrong.
-
Kingdom was incredibly crap. I'm really glad I got to see it at the cinema for free as I would have been really pissed off if I'd paid. In his entire career Lucas has only had two good ideas: Indy and Star Wars, and he's managed to fuck them both up. As great a driector as he is, Spielberg hasn't made a film that I've really enjoyed for a long time. But that's just me. I'd like to see the Indy franchise with a new star and some fresh writer's, director's and producer's, and set back in the 30's/40's. Otherwise, I think that they should just not bother making any more cos it's just plain embarrassing.
-
"In the next and final installment of the epic Indiana Jones franchise, Steve Sanshit is run over like a toad by an angry mob of collector fanboys who failed to get their limited edition "Nuclear Refrigerator" before anyone else so they can brag to all those great looking fangirls out there(yeesh!)that it only holds "Indiana Jones" junk food hocked by Puke-Ass Film, Ltd"
Sure sounds better than "Crystal Skull". -
but i think both these guys have lost it. too old, too rich...too out of touch with their younger more creative selves,.
-
You could totally see that with ford on any of the late night shows he did to promote it. He just seemed like he didn't want to be there and shy/no one to start a conversation...
-
What's with all the bullshit apologies from the two beards for Temple of Doom? At least it's not a lazy remake of Raiders, which is what Last Crusade and Skull both are. It's the only Indy sequel to do something different.
-
Kaufman and Kasdan had nothing to do with either Temple of Doom or Last Crusade.
-
Even though for some reason Lucas took credit for that in the Vanity Fair Indiana Jones article earlier this year. The funny thing is that the definitive Indy book that came out a couple of months ago says it was Phillip Kaufman who thought up the idea of Indiana Jones searching for the ark in Raiders.
-
but the blame can't lie solely on Lucas- Spielberg should have just said no. Im not surprised by this given how lazily the film was directed. (not forgetting the complete lack of peril and so few on screen deaths)
-
That's funny because he seems fairly normal in the interviews I've seen him give. Lucas on the other hand seems like a very bizzare person. I still won't forget that 60 Minutes interview when he seemed to take offense when Leslie Stahl compared him to a lot of her single mother friends. And remember, this is the guy who was going to have N Sync cameo in Attack of the Clones!!!
-
Because it definitly fits into the lazy sequel mode that Speilberg gave us with Lost World. And let's face it, as dumb as Mutt's vine swinging was, it doesn't hold a candle to Ian Malcolm's daughter doing a parallel bars routine that dispatches a raptor.
-
His idea of the future is to make the most vapid, cg clusterfuck of a movie. If he's so in the future then move on past Star Wars, douchebag. Clone Wars can suck my balls.
-
they were equally bad...but having that cartoony crap in an indy film makes it much much worse.
-
He did a terrible job. If his heart was in it, it would have been a lot better. The same goes for Williams- shame on you. GL´s fault? Was he the director? Did he hire the godawful cinematographer? Oh, I get it...it´s his fault because SS is a fucking gimp who only does what GL tells him to do.
-
This TB has revealed so many cry baby bitches, I am getting a lot of amusement out of this. I respect the opinions of those who do not resort to profane laden tirades, but not those who just want to curse whine and insult like 12 year old. Bitch on girls!!!!!
-
Rupee88: "only have yourself to blame. You basically rewarded the filmmakers with $$$ for making this film. It has made $300 million domestic."
Yeah, and Lucas and Spielberg and company can bet their asses that I WON'T be seeing the next suck-whip-man in hat-I teach part time bull$%#t. There was no excuse for this bull#%&% of a film and a hope "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight" keeps these two A-listers awake at night. Yeah, yeah, I'm just one man, but, one man from whom both men won't be any more money for the franchise (by the way, I won't be in any line, midnight showing or dollar theatre or HBO for that cartoon Clone crap).
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull = EPIC FAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL. -
Lucas makes himself the target by proudly placing his name on these productions, from the stinkers that were Eps 1 through 3 to Indy 4. And after reading that interview you can't tell me that he doesn't seem to enjoy being at the forefront of things. Well, with that comes all the rotten fruit the fans can sling his way. He's a money-grabbing hack who got lucky with camp classics and now thinks he's a great storyteller and filmmaker. On top of that, he incessantly pimps out and meddles with the truly magical stuff he created early on, often souring fans to entire franchises. He deserves all the heat he gets.
-
While I have not seen it, I can make an educated guess on it's mediocrity. There is no one person to blame. It was not all Speilberg's fault, it was not all Lucas's fault, it wasnt Ford's fault. It was all their faults. Now my opinion may change once I see it, but going on what I know from all the TB'ers here, it is a mediocre movie at best. The three main players ALL have a hand in the creative process, so stop pointing the finger of blame at one of them just because you may have some personal grudge for whatever reason.
-
Would anybody be interested in seeing Indy in Nazi germany in WWII? Take it back in time to when he and Mac were in OSS together, his job was to go in and retrieve artifacts and what not. I mean, you'd have Indy and the Nazi's, which always worked of course, there wouldn't be a Mutt, or a married Indy. I think it would work, but its whatever. I also think a Boys from Brazil approach would be cool....Nazis really did live in argentina and what not after WWII
-
You sure did!! Hey thanks for the one legged, bucked tooth prostitute with the hairy chest and balls and penis you called Crystal Skull. RETIRE!!!!!!!!
-
I hate repeating myself but the tension was there. Ford is not an easy interviewer and can be prickly. But the rumours were that he hated the screenplay and that spielberg overruled him. For ford another indy film was a last roll of the dice and I have heard that he fought vic armstrong constantly on the set, it was over the stunts and the concerns over fords age. At the cannes launch it looked they were all holding their breath. and looked really nervous. The reviews in the trades were mixed. the berg has a habit of taking credit for ideas in movies that werent his. For years the berg took all the credit for jaws. But it was the editor that saved the movie. Same for Close encounters. and as for et. that is too long a story to go into. same with Poltergiest.
-
After seeing the film. one question laid heavily on my mind and it hasnt been answered. Why did any of these people ford included make this movie?. please answer, its not as if they needed the money.
-
Now that I don't agree with--the concept of non having a right to judge art (music, film, fiction) without having done it yourself.
Sure, if you're an author or director you might have more to say about someone else's work, but to suggest that "regular" people with "regular" jobs can't critique art is decrying the purpose of art, which is expression and discourse. Does a person have to be a MLB pitcher in order to say that a certain reliever sucks? -

Maybe this has never happened to you, but have you ever gone to a school reunion, where you go out for a couple beers later with the guys you used to hang out with? You're feeling a little drunk, and in your head you get a fleeting sense of what the old times were like?
I think George, Steven and even Harrison must have felt this way about Indy. They tried too hard with Crystal Skull, forcing the nostalgia to the point where even giddy slapstick and pratfalls are accepted, instead of just going in and making a truly good adventure movie -
For the last time, it's not one or two people's fault that Indy 4 sucked. EVERYONE involved is guilty. Any of you read that Indy "journal" supplement that came along with Empire a few months back? In it, virtually all the big shots involved with the three previous movies (from pre to post) wrote little essays about how wonderful it was to be back doing Indy and how awesome the film is. Clearly, these people simply cannot make Indy work any more. I don't think they made it poor out of laziness or malice, but out of sheer incompetence instead.
An example: John Williams.
Rate the three original films any way you want, but they all had memorable and very distinctive scores. Now compare those scores to Williams' work in Indy 4. It's nothing but meandering noodling and snippets from previous iconic themes in the series.
Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with prairie dogs, atomic bombs, Soviets, aliens, UFOs, killer ants or monkeys in an Indiana Jones movie. It's exclusively a matter of execution. Those things seem to stick out as examples of suckage for a lot of people but there is no reason why those things couldn't work. It's sheer incompetence, end of story. -
Yeah, what you said.
When they were talking about how great the movie is, I suspect they were in reality describing how much they were enjoying their time making it. Because the movie itself, in total, didn't exist yet, and once it did, well--we know the end result. A three legged dog. -
Both scenes are stupid.
-
I disagree, some of the content you listed have no place on a Indy movie: atomic bombs, Soviets, aliens and UFOs.
-
I originally saw it in the cinema back when I was huge fan of the berg. I still cannot get over how awful the ending of the movie is and I refer to the scene of the t-rex in thebackyard. When, I saw that in the cinema a great deal of my respect for the berg died that day. With every passing film the filmmaker that me stare at the screen as child at ET in California over 20 years ago as died a little bit each time. The last berg film that I saw that I couldnt take my eyes off was saving private. There are moments that he pulls off ocassionally in his movies recently that are dazzling but for the longest time I think that berg has lost his magic touch. I saw munich and the opening to that is really inspired but on the whole i didnt like that movie. I cannot tell you how bored i was by terminal. It looked great. and stanley tucci was great in it. But the end was awful.
-
How so?

and saw that bit with the soviets, we looked at one another and shook our heads in disbelief. we both laughed at that line john hurt qoutes, There not going back to space, there going to the space between.
-
Is that trailer scene where Julian Moore is on the cracking window. Other than that, it's garbage. Also it's the first time a John Williams score got a fairly obvious cut and paste treatment (which Lucas would take to an even worse level in the SW prequels).
-
they did in a very long time. The stuff about the drone wars. George lucas being a short arse. and to cap it all that scene with a drunken marge and homer tossing george lucas around is hysterical. and the jim jam bonks. jokes...
-
Mac, Oxley, and the college dean. Maybe then they could've made Spalko a stronger villan, and gave Marion a scene that actually explained why she fell in love with Indy again.

. . . whatever the F*&K we want 'against this EPIC FAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL!!!!!!
You know . . . Lucas and company shoulda' known from "Lord of the Rings" how great their upcoming Indy installment needed to be.
In the words of Vader, "join ME!!!!" in not lemming on to the box office whenever these two craft something. I can't think of a better "told you so" if either of their pics end up in the # 2 slot (or worse) of the week. -
CGI ET...Shia as Elliot...Drew back as Gertie...Vin Diesel as Michael...Kate Capshaw as Mom...Chris Burke as Keys...Bill Pullman as the President..Directed By DJ Caruso...Ghost Directed by Steven Spielberg
-
Is he directing Indy 5?
-
How so? Well, Indiana Jones is an archeologist, not an UFOlogist. He's great at fighting nazis, leave the soviets and atomic bombs to James Bond.
-
I now have no doubt that Mummy 3 will be more enjoyable than Indy 4. How sad is that?
Furthermore, Brendan Fraser hinted in a recent interview that the next Mummy movie will take place in Peru which means that even a fucking Mummy sequel will make Peru exciting whereas Indy 4 could not. -
The Ark of the Covenant showing up on Hoth. Luke uses it to blow up ATATs and kill the Sarlaac.

Samuel Fulmer -- thats the funniest question I've heard all week
by dannyglovers_dickblood
...the answer is-- who the fuck cares?
-
Is like Woody Allen showing up during the Normandy Invasion in Saving Private Ryan.
-
And you know what else is great......the Mummy 3 will have actually have booby traps.
-
Is like David Lynch directing Transformers 3.
-
Is like a time traveling Conan movie where Conan is sent into the future and meets the current govenor of California.
-
So Indy is defined solely by which villains he fights? As for archaeology, how much did he do in TOD? That's two out of four movies, 50%, where he neither fought Nazis nor "archaeologized".
Indiana Jones is an all-American pulp hero. As such, he can fight Nazis, Communists, Thuggees, vampires, monsters, ghosts, cultists, gangsters -- it doesn't matter. Having Indy fight Soviets in the 1950s and stumble upon alien shenanigans is very much keeping in line with the pulp fiction of that era.
Indy 4 was simply poorly executed in almost every way. -
why they didn't film Fate of Atlantis! That was a great story and you had 3 different choices on how to tell it.
"I don't think that will work." -
Is like Danny Glover denouncing Obama and stumping for McCain.
-
I stump for no man!
-
have Zombies killing people instead of Dinosaurs, but they should still use the same characters and call it Jurassic Park. It should also include musical numbers and scenes where characters talk directly to the camera much like the cinema of Jean-Luc Godard.
-
I didn't like parts of it because thought it was too silly, and the story lacked the more serious mythology of series.
But I agree that it is way better executed than Indy 4 and much funnier.
To me the best Indy stories are: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Last Crusade and Fate of Atlantis -

I hate you and your fridge nukin', giant ant kissing, monkey swinging, waterfall falling and greedo shooting first fat piece of garbage whore shit. I hate you so much.
-
A doggie dropped it? Carry on.
-
You haven't even seen Crystal Skull and yet you're here flaming its detractors.
Oh, you hate foul language, too. Well you can go fuck George Lucas's goiter tracheotomy, then. :) -
First off, I was not flaming its detractors, I simply stated that the hate for the film should be concentrated on ALL 3 of the major players (Ford, Spielberg and Lucas) involved in the film, because they all had a hand in it's creation. I was neither flaming or defending anyone. I didn't say I hated foul language either, I said I hate posts that are just mindless profane laden tirades that make no point, and It is my right to not like them.
-
OK, Lucas and Spielberg perhaps, but Ford is just an actor, and now a desperate one at that. He doesn't deserve a 1/3 of the blame.
-
Indiana Jones is supposed to be a pulp fiction adventure. You TBers talk about it like it should be analyzed in a college film class. And if it didn't fill your expectations, well boo-fucking-hoo. When was the last time you INVENTED an internationally known film character in a totally original genre that earned billions upon billions of dollars? Answer...never. When you do then you can talk.
-
That song kicks ass. Bravo for mentioning it.
-
Lucas. Wants to make another Indy movie. Wants to be the head honcho. The Big Cheese. Top Dog. Numero Uno. Big surprise. What next? Shoehorning in a young, popular actor as Indy's son to attract the teenage demographic??
-
That's not true, they could simple do a good movie. When I first heard of the trailer I was very excited, but when it hit the screens the feeling was just "meh"! And it was a landslide from there...
They could have delivered much better. But I guess Lucas is cookoo by now. -
When was the last time YOU invented an internationally known film character in a totally original genre that earned billions upon billions of dollars? Answer...never.
With that logic, you can't talk anything about Indiana Jones too. Just like us. Welcome to the club. Have a cigar. -
I was not thrilled with the replacement of the songs from Jabba's palace, there was really no reason to do that.
-
Perhaps Ford does not deserve 1/3 of the blame, but he deserves some, he has worked with these guys enough that he should have no problem putting his 2 cents in. But as I said, I have not seen the movie yet, I am only going by what I have heard on here and other places. So my opinion may change.
-
Spielberg is just someone who has the balls to tell Lucas he's wrong. Lucas has surrounded himself with yes-men who gave us every horrible flick since Jedi.
-
You'll know Indy 5 is coming out soon when Brendan Fraser starts another film trilogy that Lucas can plagiarize.
-
Sitting through it!
-
biggest letdown of the summer. I enjoyed Iron Man, was pleasantly surprised by Speed Racer (which I think is one of the best FAMILY movies in years) and of course The Dark Knight was frikkin ace. But Indy.... I walked out of it almost upset. The last good film SS made was Catch Me If You Can, I watched again on the weekend and its still fantastic.
-
SO FUCK YOU ALL AND BRING ON INDY 5!
-
You're probably better off waiting for the DVD anyways. Less hype to warp your perceptions and expectations that way.
-
Did George ever really explain why he changed those songs?
I heard that it was because Kevin Smith mocked those scenes in his movies. -
please drop dead immediately.you've lost your magic ages ago
-
Honestly, the only good Star Wars movie was Empire Strikes Back and even that had its shitty moments.
What a dated, shitty trilogy. And all these people keep praising Lucas for it. He should stop milking this shit and just step back from making anything. Just let your ILM deal with everything from now on.
You can clearly tell Lucas had his hands in the new Indy movie, it was absolute garbage and it reminded me so much of the new Star Wars movies.
Way to piss on an old trilogy (which by the way trumps Star Wars so easily). -
Please explain? Terrible dialogue and a terrible story. The only memorable characters being Darth Vader and Yoda (they both had their quirkiness and were likeable).
I used to love Han Solo, but after rewatching it he's so lame. He tries so hard to be cool "Easy Princess. Chill out Luke, yeah I'm so badass uhhh, hey your heiness I'm so rebellious I'm pretending not to care you're royalty".
Its just a dated movie, sure it did alot for its time but still it isn't very....good. -
What an overrated trilogy. I still can't understand how it has such a big fanbase. And I'm surprised that only a few point out how much they don't like it. Afraid of the backlash or something?
-
Because we don't bash the OT because they were awesome films. It's pretty clear that all of us on here voice our opinions, and the few weirdos (LOL) who don't like the OT say so, but there are not many. I am sure there are others like you who don't like the OT and that's fine, but understand that among movie geeks like us, there simply are not many who don't like the OT
-
Can't compare the two, because they are totally different types of movies.
-

by thewaqman
And I still chastise myself for thinking such a thing.....terrible fucking movie. I can understand what you're saying about the movie experience watching Star Wars for the first time in theatres...BUT I don't see it being in the top 50 even as greatest movie ever made.
I would have had a much better time watching Raiders in the theatre for the first time (when I first saw it...on TV I was blown away). And also I definitely remember watching LOTR: Fellowship in theatres and feeling awe struck. (a trilogy I find superior to Star Wars, although both series have their fanboys). -
Can't speak for the other four films, but the first two in their original incarnations were absolutely perfect. Same goes for Raiders.
Since there's six Star Wars films instead of three now, does that make it the Star Wars Sexology? -
Nearly forgot about that one.And Star Wars movies aren't overrated so much as they're over-analyzed. What Lucas did with them was simple and literary, and that's why they're so popular. But people invest too much in them, place them up on a pedestal, and hold them as something sacred. They're just movies for cryin' out loud! Oh, fuck it. What a lot of morons you are. Think you know it all about film? Lucas has yet to make a bad movie! Discuss.Oh, piss on it. Stupid website anyway. The Dark Knight is the second coming. My ass it is. The asteroid chase in Attack of the Clones alone owns any action movie made in the past 20 years! Lucas forever!
-
Sorry about that. I think actually there was such a decline in quality it's almost like the prequels are the retard second cousins of the OT. Even the general movie going public call them "the old ones" and "the new ones," it's almost as if it never even occurs to them that they are technically the same series.
-
What a fucking pompous ass. I want to see Spielberg's response to that.
-
Never take advice from a man with 1 and a half good movies to there credit.
-
You do know Lucas did not direct Empire Right?
-
When Phantom Menace came is still a kid in my eyes, and can't hold a real discussion about the OT.
-
Especially since there's the potential of shit like Greedo shooting first being the only OT they know.
-
I just did'nt want to watch a kind of "Dallas-in-the-star-galactic peplum" I wanted a "western space opera" like the OT. But 10 years after I can now watch TPM and enjoy it for what it is (a colorfull first installment). The really painfull one is still AOTC. What a waist of time...No wonder ROTS looked so rushed. (I don't want Padme to die! - ok, kill some kids and we'll see what we can do - ok!)
-
Egotist. That is why nobody works with him.
-
I think we can put the blame entirely on Lucas' shoulders. He's the one who got final approval of the script, the cartoon creatures, the action scenes. He was the money man in charge of the production, the story, the aliens, everything. He took my money on opening day and fucked me!!! Now's he's gonna use that money and make an Indy V, Star Wars ep. 20, Clone wars 6 and other shitty movies! I WANT MY MONEY BACK NOW!!!!!
-
Colorful, just like my shit after I eat a Macho Burrito?
-
...who have been going on about how crap INDY IV was and how THE MUMMY III looks so much better. I think those guys should be rounded up and forced to actually watch THE MUMMY III this weekend.
-
...I do thing THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS is actually a great movie!
-
is right about that asteroid chase in CLONES. Plus the fight between Obi-Wan and Fett was staged and filmed better than any fight in BATMAN BEGINS. Remember - it IS possible to fuck things up so that people genuinely lose interest. (THE MATRIX: REVOLUTIONS, anyone?)
-
Micheal Crawford's toy reviews are cool. wait. different Micheal Crawford? shit.
-
kung fu! on the wing of a plane!
-
I love how the Lucas haters complain that CGI ruined "Indy IV" for them and yet they give free passes to such CGI-fests as "The Mummy III" and "Hellboy II."
-
Does not bother me at all, I enjoyed them, and I will never apologize for it, nor will I ever consider myself less of a SW fan for liking them, and I could care less what anyone else thinks of me as a SW fan, I know the kind of fan I am and that's all that matters. I know a lot of the backlash for the prequels is because a lot of fans feel he didn't make a film for "us" (the older, original SW geeks), instead making movies for kids. I know there are also a lot of other reasons people hate them, and some are valid in my eyes, some are not. But in the end, all that matters is what they were to me. Telling others that they are assholes for liking the prequels, or that they are undemanding SW fans, or any of that other bullshit is just that, bullshit. No matter what anyone says, it won't ever change my mind about how i feel about the prequels. If you are gonna hate them, fine hate them, but don't presume to tell me what I should feel about them, because a lot of so called "opinions" come across as arrogance.
-
The problem with the asteroid chase in Attack Of The Clones, unlike The Empire Strikes Back is you knew Obi Wan could not die, and would not die. Lucas should have killed off Obi-Wan and that would have been a shocker, something sobering for fans. He, Obi Wan, should have been replaced by a clone who would compromise the Jedi council from the inside out...even having a secret affair with Padme, in order to further push Anakin away from the Jedi and into the hands of the Sith Lord. The Clone, eventually could have begun to relate more to Anakin and the others, and then question his own part in playing the role of a mole for the Sith Lord. From there, we might see him take the side of the the Jedi. Anticipating this, Palpatine would move to influence Anakin as the real object of his plan, the Obi Wan clone just a pawn...a convenient misdirection. The prequels lacked suspense because we knew that certain characters would not, and could not die...those like Obi-Wan...so how could you ever feel that he was in danger, hence that robbed the viewers of any tension and suspense when it came to these characters, even Palpatine???? Wouldn't it have been cool if we learned that the real Sith Lord replaced himself with a benevolent clone...who was not aware of his creator or the Sith Master's plan to take-over the Old Republic, the reason why the Jedi could not see any evil in him. When the time was right, the real Palpatine would emerge from the shadows and kill his own clone, taking over his seat of power as the leader of the Republic and then, turning it into the Empire by claiming some militants killed the Jedi and this is the only way to save the government. Now that would have made people sit-up and pay attention...as they would never know...who might live or die until the vary last frame of the prequel trilogy. Finally, it would have been great if the Emperor gave back Padme to a mourning Anakin in the form of a clone...but he, Anakin, now Darth Vader, strikes her down with his light saber as she greets him for the first time...remembering that this is just a clone...and could never be his Padme, the real Padme.

End Credits Crystal Skull Theater Reaction Same As Phantom Menac
by bk-whopper
Some grumbling and forced, scattered applause. People were in shock that they had just seen a bad Indiana Jones movie, like they were in shock when they had just seen a bad Star Wars movie with TPM. Lucky for Lucas he has nothing left to soil.
-
It obviously hasn´t occured to you that the reason why GL had to come up with Midichlorians was to make it impossible to clone Jedi/Sith Lords. How fucking stupid would the SW universe be without that rule he made up? You could clone everybody. Death would mean nothing. Where would the fucking suspense you`re talking about be? It would be like watching those horrible Pirates of the Caribean movies. I´m not saying you are stupid or that your ideas are stupid...but it´s so easy to come up with counterfactuals. I thought making Fett the template for the clones was a good idea- putting Anakin in the counsil was a good idea too- have anakin kill kids shocked me- I didn´t think Padme was going to die...the movies DID have stuff you couldn´t see coming from a mile away.
The problem with the asteriod chase was: it was done before in ESB. They are not even in an asteriod field...they`re in the planet´s ring...but Fett calls it asteriod field to make sure nobody misses the retread. -
'I love how the Lucas haters complain that CGI ruined "Indy IV" for them and yet they give free passes to such CGI-fests as "The Mummy III" and "Hellboy II."'
And yet the funny thing is, both those movies you mentioned had several things in them that INDY IV did not: decent characters, a coherent narrative, set-pieces that were integral to the plot, a real sense of jeopardy and peril, no Shia or stupid CGI gophers or hopelessly unfunny CGI monkey Tarzan spoofs or zombified Karen Allen... I can't believe we're even having this conversation. You REALLY don't see the difference between Indy "tired as fuck and don't care any more" IV and the vivid imagination of HELLBOY II, and the sheer stupid fun of MUMMY III? The dumb Yeti scene alone was more fun than the whole of INDY IV! You hopeless, deluded fuck. Enjoy your Lucas-shite. -
The fuck he hasn't - he could still desecrate HOWARD THE DUCK. CGI the sex scene with Howard and Lea Thompson and make it an R rating, thus fucking the last vestiges of Lea Thompson's career into the ground with his own.
-
We all know there's no sound in space - therefore we mostly give this inaccuracy a free pass, as space mjovies would be boring as fuck if completely silent.
Then Lucas invents a space chase featuring a sonic bomb that not only works on sound, but is completely outside the laws of physics. Like, WAY out. Dumb fuck.
EVERYTHING was wrong with that chase - especially the feeble evil laugh they give young Boba to do at the beginning of the chase. So, so utterly wrong...
