Image from David Duchovny's RETURN TO ME
I know NOTHING about this movie. It has completely come in under my radar so far. What's the scoop everyone?

Sounds shit!!! Reminds me of "Heart Condition" with Bob Hoskins and Denzel Washington. But that was good!! Not the same though.....

The movie crew is right up the street as I type. Today's scene is supposed to be Minnie Driver's character showing her work at an art fair. They are shooting on a street where the art fair will really be held starting tomorrow. Anyway, they will be shooting next door to me for two weeks starting Monday. This is the place where Minnie Driver is supposed to work as a waitress.
-
Yes, Bonnie Hunt wrote it. She will also be in it and is directing. Her first.
-
Your right, this does sound like shit.

Moulder's sporting the white man's overbite like a champ.

"Return to me!" is what Duchovny will be begging of his fan base after this cinematic turd swirls away down the porcelain file. Seriously, does anyone think this guy's career will go anyway after The X-Files is finished?
-
What is this, a sci-fi flick? We're supposed to believe this could happen? My god, Bonnie Hunt has had too much time on her hands to write something like this and if David Duchovny had ANY chance of a career after The X-Files, this will seal the nail in his coffin. BTW, who's the casting genius who, already having two of the most uncharasmatic leads possible, casted Jim Belushi? When was the last time he was in a movie that turned out good?

Wow! I wish I had the ability to tell if a movie will suck by t
by gsolo
I think both these actors can be great when they have well written scripts and solid, inspired direction.
-
I have to agree with everyone else here - Duchovny has no chance at a decent career after leaving XF.
Just think - what are the two greatest cult sci-fi series to emerge over the years (before XF): Star Wars and Star Trek. And in them and all of their iterations, only ONE previously unknown guy has actually managed to have a successful career afterwards - Harrison Ford. Fisher, Hammill et. al. got jack squat, Shatner went on to write Tek War, Nimoy got a few walk-on cameo bits and that's it, Stewart was in Masterminds and Dad Savage (and he was even known before ST), Spiner was in Out to Sea; basically they're all nobodies now, too bad since several of them were actualy pretty good actors (Spiner especially - Data's one of the best-acted TV characters I've ever seen). Now Gillian Anderson actually has a chance to do well - she was excellent in "Playing by Heart", cool in her cameo in "Hellcab" (both great movies BTW), and she's even in the US dub of Mononoke Hime. But Duchovny's career is over after XF - I haven't seen him play any part well other than Fox Mulder and he's only good at that role because he's helped Carter create it.
As for this movie - Minnie Driver's bitchy voice and incredible ugliness guarantee that I at least won't like it (I only liked Good Will Hunting b/c I fast forwarded through the romance parts and just watched the cool Robin Williams parts - it's a much better movie without her in it). What's Duchovny going to do next - a threesome with Suzanne Somers and Fran Drescher? He should give up on movies and take a few years off after XF to spend some more time as a parent. -
He's a charming, funny man, and people enjoy watching him. If he develops his career well, which would start with him not taking parts in films like these, I think he could last. The best things about his character on the X-Files are what HE brings to them, not what Carter has written. It may be his own personality he's projecting, but the same could be said about Harrison Ford. I think he needs to base his choice in films more on secondary parts, that are real gems as opposed to taking big paychecks if he wants to be around in 5 years. I would try to send him into the land of romantic comedies, because I think he is a natural comedian.
-
this looks like a serious mistep. I guess he's trying the romance stuff after the above two, well, bombed. I still like the one line in that movie (can't remember buddy's name, though) "What am I doing? I'm FUCKING EVERYBODY!!!"
-
. . . who likes the idea of this movie. oh well, not the first, and i'm sure not the last. :-) however - this actually, if done correctly, will be a movie that will score big points in a nice demo - 13-24yr old females. romantic flick, cute guy, sap. makings of a good time. and i've read a little of the script, it seems solid. i personally think that David Duchovny has a good chance at a career after XF, depending on what he *wants* - someone mentioned that Carrie Fisher & Mark Hamill got fucked over by Star Wars - no they didn't. Do you even know what they've been doing?? Carrie's got a very good screenwriting career going (Postcards From The Edge, anyone? Not to mention the numerious things she's worked on uncredited) and Mark has done major broadway. and he does major amounts of voice-over work. So it's simply perspective - what did they want? 'cause they got it. and i, for one, happen to think that David will do whatever it is that he really wants to, when XF is over. He's talented (acting, writing, and directing) and that'll keep him in good stead. *re-reads post* whoa, that got off-topic. :-) RtM is not going to be everyone's movie. True. But it is likely to score with groups that the studios want. And if it holds to what i've read of the script, it will be very well done. maybe everyone should give it a chance, it might surprise you.
-
Hey, delsol; we're both in Old Town; what's the place/restaruant where they'll be shooting? Are really gonna try and shoot during the art festival? Yikes.
Some info;
also starring Jim Belushi.
Cinematographer is Laszlo Kovacks
of GHOSTBUSTER and MULTIPLICITY and, of course, EASY RIDER. -
Kena mentioned Carrie & Mark Hamill's careers after SW - may I also mention that while Leonard Nimoy hasn't had the ACTING roles some might've hoped for him, he has carved out a niche as quite the director? (Did anyone see 'Three Men and a Baby'? It was a modest hit in the eighties.) Currently, Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie (another ST:TNG hopeful; he played Q) are developing an audio books play of 'War of the Worlds' . . . just cause it isn't on the big screen, don't mean they aren't working. Brent Spiner, along with 'Out to Sea' as someone chose to mention, had roles in 'Independence Day' (wasn't that a hit a couple summers ago? God knows I can't remember . . . . . . .) and Phenomenon. Patrick Stewart has done numerous things, not the least of which a Golden Globe and Emmy nominated role in 'Moby Dick' and a lauded one man show, 'A Christmas Carol' on Broadway. He was the villain in 'Conspiracy Theory' and 'Masterminds', not to mention the 'hero' (I use the term loosely) in 'Safehouse'. If ever there was a man who crushed the 'cult tv icons never work again' theory, it is Patrick Stewart. I like the looks of 'Return to Me'. For the record, as described by David Duchovny, they're going for the tone of a 'Real life fairy tale'. Bonnie Hunt has described RtM as a Romantic COMEDY. Even though the material appears to be gruesome (as is the case with most fairy tales - anyone ever read the Brothers Grimm tale of Cinderella?) this thing IS a comedy. A serious, heartfelt, romantic comedy, but a comedy nonetheless. Did y'all think David Alan Grier's presence was coincidence? I, for one, won't judge a movie until i ACTUALLY SEE IT. As far as the careers of X-Files stars go - they are a very talented group of people and I have no doubt they will have successful careers after the show runs its course. And, btw, I happen to LIKE James Belushi.
-
I find it quite interesting that one would think that DD would not have a career after TXF, especially when you consider he had one BEFORE it.
I also find it utterly amazing that comparisons can be made about this movie and that certain people can predict it sucks without knowing squat about the script.
For those squawking about Heart Condition, please put a sock in it until you know what you're talking about. Return to Me is a *completely* different premise. Unlike Heart Condition, Return to me has no ghost with a conscience, and it's not overtly comedic, not to mention Minnie Driver and David Duchovny look nothing like Denzel Washington and Bob Hoskins. -
Just because Leonard Nimoy didn't continue with television after STAR TREK was canceled (I'm not sure if he was a regular or a guest on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE), didn't mean he gave up acting. Throughout the 1970s, Nimoy returned to the stage, appearing in such productions as FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, and CAMELOT. I think David Duchovny is one of the best actors working today. True, a lot of people (myself included) see him only as Fox Mulder. But that's because Mulder was the role that made him a household name. It's a tribute to his work that the public believes him to be an FBI agent who believes in the paranormal and supernatural. His acting has elevated many an X-FILES episode from good to great. He doesn't hit a false note. Everything comes across as genuine. It may take him a few years to shed his X-FILES image (hey, do we think of Tom Hanks as a cross-dresser anymore? Who would have thought in 1980 the star of BOSOM BUDDIES would end up with two Academy Awards and the respect of almost everyone in Tinseltown?) David Duchovny AND Gillian Anderson will both have great careers once THE X-FILES ends. It may take getting used to seeing them in different roles, but, like Humphrey Bogart said in CASABLANCA: "We'll always have reruns." Or something like that...
-
This is what I heard...David Duchovny's character loses his wife or girlfriend (I can't rememeber which) in an accident and her organs are donated. In comes Minnie Driver's character. She receives the heart and is saved. Then the two meet somehow and then the romance begins...I believe that the girlfriend is played by Joley Fisher. That's all I can recall...

Okay, since everyone's busy correcting my previous statement about washouts in sci-fi classics let me clarify. They may not be *failures* per se, but they're definitely all sell-outs. I mean, c'mon, Masterminds? "Hey Pat, we know you're mainly interested in the Royal Shakespeare Company, but how about playing the arch-villain in a lame-ass movie about kids taking over a school?" Spiner was in Independence Day as a nerdy doctor guy and in Phenomenon as a nerdy doctor guy - each a bit part. Waste of talent there. Nimoy, take a look at IMDB... he's had a perfectly decent career as a narrator and directed a few so-so movies but certainly nothing big since SW (not on the terms we're talking about for Duchovny). Mark Hammill was not only IN Wing Commander the computer game, he was cut from it for the movie. He's got a broadway career, and if that makes him happy that's fine, but as far as the mass media success we're talking about he hasn't done much. Carrie Fisher does TV commercials for laundry detergent. 'nuff said. She writes, yes, but as I said before, Shatner wrote Tek War. Now I'm not calling all selling-out a bad thing; Francis Ford Coppola did to make Godfather 3 and no one accuses him of being a second-rate director (plus it wasn't *that* bad a movie). And between Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan Spielberg did The Lost World. I'm just saying that selling out is the sign of a failing (or failed) career or simply a lack of common sense that can greatly impede one's progress in Hollywood; plenty of people climb back up but plenty more don't. And the fact that all of these cult sci-fi stars have been mostly on that level in the time since their initial success says something about one's chances of making a real career after a sleeper hit.
Oh, and sorry if this offends/annoys anyone; I'm not saying these are bad people, I'm just saying they made stupid choices or had difficulty finding decent jobs. -

Hasn't anyone out there seen a movie called "THE RAPTURE" also starring Mimi Rodgers? What a fantastic, moving and utterly eerie film. It's got to be Mr. Duchovny's best work yet. And same for Mimi.
-
DD is not some moron that was picked up off the street to play Mulder, he's a super smart guy. He got his BA at Princeton in English Lit (senior thesis: "The Schizophrenic Critique of Pure Reason in Beckett's Early Novels") and then a master's in English Lit at Yale... he was working on his doctoral dissertation there ("Magic and Technology in Contemporary Poetry and Prose") when he left school to be an actor. As was said before of Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill, this guy is going to do whatever he wants, regardless of whether it fits everyone else's definition of a "career after XF"
-
OK... Time to diss David Duchovny
again by the looks of it. All I can say is - Please wait until the film comes out. So, it looks like it could be like a hundred others - does every film have to *say* something? Can't it just be a nice couple of hours away from real life? A sweet romantic comedy can make you feel good. Is that bad?
Although, having said all that, I do wonder at DD choices sometimes.
In XF, DD's acting is often overlooked... GA is the award winner on the show. But he is not a 'bad' actor. I read an artical once that said although DD is a good actor, GA is a great one, and that is where he suffers in comparison. I think he has improved in leaps and bounds since joining XF, and in the movie he absolutly nailed it. But GA has done the right thing, roles wise, taking smaller ones and ensemble pieces, working up to
larger roles, getting some good reviews and press under her belt.
(she is presently on our shores here in Britain filming 'The House of Mirth') I wish DD would do that. He admitted he rushed into 'Playing God' (which I didn't think was that bad) because he really wanted to do a film. I am hoping this is not going to be the case with RTM. The thing that will work in his favour is the comedy element. He has shown many times he has a natural flair for that, I'm hoping they will play to his strengths.
I guess what I'm trying to say in my very bad way is - lets wait and see. DD is not an awful actor. I just wish he would be a little more careful in his choices. Then again, maybe he doesn't care if he stays famous or not... In the recent XF that he wrote and directed (to much applause and praise) his main character said -
'I don't want to be no famous man. Just want to be a man.'
Maybe that's what DD wants too.
-
You've got the basic premise correct, although I think DD's wife is played by Joely Richardson. Carroll O'Connor and Robert Loggia are co-owners of the restaurant where she waitresses, and COC is also her father. This is going to be a sweet and sappy romantic comedy that tugs at your heart strings. OK, it's not some gorefest or sci-fi trash. IMO there's room for all of these in this world. If you don't like them, don't go see them. Just like I wouldn't waste 2 hours of my time or $8 to see something like The Mummy.
-
If I may go *completely* off topic and rant for a little while here- I don't understand how some of you can outright say that David's choices are BAD! They aren't! He acts in what he wishes to act in and does well in his roles. I think some of you may be forgetting that he is a human and that he perhaps thinks of the *enjoyment* he gets out of the role as opposed to the "mass media" reaction or the paycheck he'll get. In Scully's words "It frightens me that you would reduce these people to a cultural stereotype" and it really does frighten me that we can so easily judge David Duchovny's choices without even knowing his motives. And no, dying out after his role in the xfiles? If anything it has strengthened him, not hindered him. If people are really that unobservant that they would not be able to tear themselves away from the *falsity* that is Fox Mulder, they'll never be able to appreciate *anyone* in *any* role.
-
wow, i wish i had everyone's ability to see one promo photo for a movie that's still in production and judge whether its going to be a success or not in one glance. true, that is not the best picture of david (for a better one, a really better one: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/3747/ddfngr.jpg) but if someone were to judge the xfiles based on one of his early headshots... it wouldn't be the fantastic hit that it is. yes, playing god was a mistake - even he admitted that and i'd like to think that taught him his lesson. i believe that he can make it after the xfiles and i will definitely be in line for the premiere of this movie.
-
Some of you must be the same folks who judge people by their looks, i.e. deformities, skin color, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. I agree with Ophinea about the sock. My suggestion would be to use a pair. It's bad enough that everybody thinks they're a film critic AFTER they've seen a movie. In fact, it's bad enough that there are film critics. Everybody likes what they like, you guys. Trashing the movie before it's even done certainly isn't going to keep me from seeing it. And as for choices, Duchovny makes his, you make yours, and I'll make mine. Personally, I'll take sitting in a dark theater with Mr. Duchovny for two hours over the same scenario with anyone else on the planet ANY DAY! Bad movies, good movies...just so long as he makes movies. Lots and lots of movies. And BTW, I don't think we need to worry about his career after X-Files. I'm sure he's not, and he shouldn't. The man is a fine actor, a superlative writer, and has heart some of you couldn't find in yourselves with heat-sensing night vision. Let them finish the movie and release it, for cryin' out loud. Then come back and spew.
-
I don't understand the negative, downright knee-jerk, reaction people have to DD's acting. He's terrific, generally bringing intelligence and (here's something sci-fi geeks might not be real up on) subtlety to his roles. Mulder is only one character he's played, and he's played him brilliantly... a fully realized character with depth. If people didn't believe Mulder, and care about him, the X-Files would never have worked. GA is fabulous, but she also has the easier role. She's the rational one. They've written her some juicy bits, which she's done great by. But it's Duchovny who's sold me on a guy everyone around him thinks is nuts but he's not... subtle stuff. A guy who's sacrificed everything for a quest, without becoming either a full-blown sap or a cartoon. I'm rooting for him, that's for sure. Mulder's a much meatier role than Captain Kirk, Mr Spock, or Han Solo, for heaven's sake.
To the person who commented that maybe DD should try smaller film roles, he has. He was in several movies before getting leads in "The Rapture", "Kalifornia", "Playing God", and the XF flick. (One was "Beethoven" with Bonnie Hunt; so, he's working with a friend now.) He's also been great in other TV shows, namely Twin Peaks and The Larry Sanders Show. However, going along with the idea that Duchovny is drawn to the subtle, most of what he's done ends up being underrated.
"Return to Me" sounds like a romantic comedy, which IMO he is born to work in - rather than being born to play a depressed FBI agent who's chasing little green men with a badge and a gun shouting to God and whoever will listen that the sky is falling and we're in for the shit storm of all time.
Looks like range to me. -
After reading these comments in their entirety I just wanted to note here how quickly one person can create so many different opinions, objections, comments, and insults at the same time! Yay to sticking up for David! Yay for intellegent analysis! Yay for all of us who can have such differing opinions, yet can talk about them without harsh words! Yay for this forum which we have created here where everyone can speak freely about the man and his talents.
-
I'm so sick of all the X Files fans saying "if you like the show, you'll like this movie because DD is in it"! did you ever stop to think that just because you watch the show doesn't mean you are a fan of David, or even like him! the reason i watch The X files is because of the usually great scripts (yes, i *hated* the episode that DD directed and wrote, it was stupid and not an X File classic at all!). almost in every successful T.V show one or two actors make it to the big screen and stay there, Gillian Anderson made it ("Playing By Heart" was amazing, with amazing cast and acting) and i don't think that DD can. he isn't that good of an actor. i think that when the show will end, he'll stay on T.V, maybe it's because of his choices, maybe it's his made-for- T.V- movies style of acting. this movie sounds stupid and looks stupid. David should be happy he got The X Files because he can't do anything else.
-
Fanoduke... :-) great name...
Actually, I agree with you, even
though I was the one who said about DD taking smaller roles.
You're right, he has done smaller
roles sucessfully and larger ones
(I loved Kalifornia) But these were Pre-XF. I think if he had not gone into the show, you would have found him continuing to build to more prominent starring roles, or maybe even going the Indie route. But XF came along and for 6 years most people have seen him as Mulder. I just meant a
little easing back into varied roles might have been wise, just to remind people of what he can do, as oppose to he couldn't handle it. A I said, I think he has improved so much in the last few years.
And I am with you in praising his
subtle approach. I am sure he once said it you have to watch his eyes, he may look like nothing is going on, but watch his eyes. It's very true.
-
I'd think it would be better to see the movie before automatically assuming it sucks. The plot reminds me of a wonderful episode of the show "Ghost Stories." If only RtM was more spooky than romantic.
-
Jeez, such a bunch of thinskinned Nellies. I make one little gag about Duchovny's limited acting range (face it, he's not Kenneth Branagh) and everyone's feelings are hurt. How dare I crack wise about show business?! Because I feel like it, that's why. And you know what else? The plot of this movie sounds totally absurd. A guy falls in love with a woman because she's got his wife's heart inside? What does he do, open up her ribcage and kiss the thing? How romantic. Then let me guess, he has an affair with the gall bladder, then he cheats on them both with the large intestine. *Sob*! That's so beautiful!
Aw, gimme a break, I'm just kidding around.... -
exactly! and may i add: damn right, too! David is not that good of an actor. he's just another actor, like many others.look at what he did before The X Files- Porn and small parts in movies and T.V shows, he was nothing before The X Files and he'll stay nothing after the show will be over. he won't be remembered has one of the best, he'll probebly won't be remembered at all. he's not a *bad* actor, but he isn't a good one also. turning on the tear fountain on cue is not good acting. somebody mention that she is going to see the movie just to spend two hours with DD on the big screen, well that's great for you, but most people care about the actual movie, (stupid little stuff like the plot, the acting... you know...) i might not be bother by DD's acting if it was a good movie (i'm a fan of the X Files) but from what i read here, the plot sucks.
-
While i'm not sure that i like the sound of this movie, and i'm sure not a big Minnie Driver's fan, i think that the direction is the right one for David. smart, subtle, sweet romantic movie is the best thing for hom. Bonnie Hunt is more than okay, and if she did a good eriting job, it will be nice movie.
As for Savid's acting skills, is the most underated actor around. he's a great actor, he's wonderful to watch and he'll be great even after the x-files.
-
Ok -I'll admit DD hasn't ALWAYS made the best choices, but it's all worked out in the end. I, for one, think it's wrong for people to just diss the Movie because it's not TXF. Whats wrong with a simple, romantic, feel-good movie? I hope it has a good script and does well in the box office. I also hope some small-mindd people will give David a chance as an actor. He's not Mulder . I don't see how you can like TXF and Mulder without likeing (or at least respecting) DD. Without he, Gillain, and the rest of the phenominal cast, the show wouldn't be what it is today! IMHO he's a very good actor.
Well, I'm sorry to rant & rave like that - but some people!!
Well, till next time, I guess I'll go plot deaths for the Fowl one =)
-
Looks pretty good from the scripts posted onthe web!
-
As a fan of David Duchovny, and all of his work outside of The X-Files, and as one who hates to see ignorance revealed, I think that those who have negative things to say about David's acting missed a few things. I fail to see how someone who has one a Golden Globe Award, and been nominated several years running for both Emmys and Golden Globes, and who has won an American Comedy Award, not to mention written, directed, and starred in his own episode of The X-Files, something that very few actors manage to do successfully, can be considered a bad actor who is merely riding the waves of his show's success. And also, just out of curiosity, has anyone ever heard of Harrison Ford? He's starred in a few movies. Or Patrick Stewart? He won a few Tony awards, and did this little one man show of A Christmas Carol that got him recognized world wide for his versatility. Just a question, since all the stars of Star Wars and Star Trek never amounted to anything...
-
I am snipping from various posts here, generalizing. If you don't like David in anything other than the Fox Mulder role, if you are sick of this yuppie shit, think he will be asking his X files fans to 'return to him', if you think he *can't* do anything but the X files, if you are delusional and think he did *porn* before the X files and if you just plain don't like him...then why are you here, linking to a page anout David's upcomming movie? Hmm, maybe cause you people don't have anything better to do. You know, it's fine of you don't like him, I am realistic, but why are you here bad mouthing him?
MOve on!!!
PROUD member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to David Duchovny! -
I just returned from a preview of "Return to me." I went in not expecting to like it that much, because of the farfetched premise, but I both laughed and became teary-eyed at this charming and funny movie. The movie works. I'm no big fan of Minnie Driver (in fact I thought she was best in "Circle of Friends"), but I liked her here. I am a big fan of David and the X-Files, and you do get past "Mulder" after the first few minutes. It's no Academy-Award-winner but I really liked it and the audience loved it. I give it a solid 3 out of 4 stars. See it when it opens in April.
