Well folks, here's the latest look at the squirrel and moose production. Personally, I'm dying for a glimpse of the CGI Rocky and Bullwinkle. And... is it just me or do Fearless Leader and Boris send a scary chill down your spine. Thanks go out to the High Rollin Pimp

    An Experiment in Bad Casting...

    by kb

Who is the hell cast Jason Alexander in this film?????? Opposite Rene Russo and DeNiro he's going to look like a talentless boob in this film... To put it bluntly: He will be the Jar Jar Binks of this film!!

    that's because...

    by uncle cracky

he IS a talentless boob! He was brilliant as George, perfect in fact. But that's where it begins and ends for him. He will be the ultimate low point of this film. But that Rold Gold Pretzel commercial where he catches the puck in his mouth, that's pure genius. Mmmmmm... Rold Gold Pretzels...

Robert DeNiro has lost his mind

    by mean ween

I say we kidnap the bastard, take him to an abandoned warehouse, and work him over till he comes to his senses. Has he joined a cult or something? What happened to Jake LaMotta? What happened to Travis Bickel? Ah, Travis. Those were the days. My God, the man can act. Look at The Deer Hunter. My friends pop was in 'nam. His army buddy killed himself after seeing that scene. We all know what scene I'm talking about. That was powerful stuff. This is monumental cinema I'm talking here. So why is DeNiro taking these parts. Granted, Analyze This was alot of fun... but this?? I was at a showing of Analyze This at the International House in Philadelphia. The place was crawling with the over-60's cultural elite crowd... you know, the ones who show up at those barnes and noble poetry readings. One dried up woman infront of me said "Well, it has DeNiro. It's got to worth seeing." That poor poor woman. The man is lost. He's still got it in him. I've got to believe that. But he is lost. Somebody has reel this fish in... and it can't and won't be Scorcese.

Haven't you heard of doing a movie because it might be fun? I would think that, or the fact that DeNiro is a fan of the cartoon, is the reason that he is doing the movie. He may not want to do heavy drama all the time, he wants to show his comedy chops!

    by cady

You're overreacting. De Niro's doing just fine. He continues to do fine work (HEAT, WAG THE DOG, JACKIE BROWN, ANALYZE THIS, etc.).
They may not be "Oscar-worthy" roles,
but who cares? Oscar-worthy doesn't mean shit these days, nothing more than well-intentioned crap. According to Kevin Smith (CLERKS), the script for ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE was the funniest he's read in a long time. So don't judge before you've seen the final product. I like De Niro's attitude these days. He's more relaxed and is having more fun. And he seems above the whole "awards" mentality that has plagued Hollywood.

Yes. You're right. You've opened a new door for me. I realize I'm nostalgic, cynical, and jaded as gold-toothed mortician. But, I must say that those comedic chops you referred to are a direct result of DeNiro's reputation as a dramatic actor. They would not exist without that juxtaposition. Analyze This was funny because of the comedic twist placed on a character that we are all so familiar with... the DeNiro mobster. Like all good comedy, it took our expectations and threw them in our faces. I hope to God that this is just a phase for him, though. The man needs something fresh and I don't think comedy is it. Everytime I see Raging Bull I'm blown away by the guy's ability. I want to see a performance like that again.

sorry, but I have to take issue with you on one point. Wag the Dog was a painful film to sit through. DeNiro's acting was fine. I wasn't flaming the man's abilities... and I never will. I was flaming the man's recent project choices. Wag the Dog had a very weak script. It was an incredibly interesting premise but the script was BAD... Good old shoe/Good old shoe/Yer bound to get to heaven with the sole of a good old shoe... my God. I saw the film once, one painful sitting, and that godawful jingle is branded into my mind. I wake up screaming at night with the strain of that horrible song trailing off into my subconcious. And now it's become a part of our political dialogue. That's the cruelest joke of them all. A failure of a film now cited by heads of state to describe foreign policy motives. And I'm still not sure if I liked Jackie Brown. DeNiro was pretty much a lump in that one. I went out and read the book after seeing it and enjoyed the book much more. The film didn't gel for me.

    by yakitty_yak10

DeNiro was funny in Jackie Brown, but the movie overall was OKAY. But a loud "Right On" to whoever said that the book is much better. Any Elmore Leonard Novel is better than the movie adaptations. I haven't read Rum Punch Yet, but both the novels, "Get Shorty" and "Out of Site" were much more enjoyable than the films. Read Leonard! He's cool.

Anyone who says that Jason Alexander can't act hasn't seen him in anything but Seinfeld. Did anyone who's critisizing him ever see Bye Bye Birdie? The only thing keeping him from becoming a mainstream actor is the fact that he's a short stocky bald guy. At least wait until the trailer.

We'll have to agree to disagree, Mean Ween.

    by cady

I enjoyed both WAG THE DOG and JACKIE BROWN. The former was a sharp and funny political satire with a very underrated De Niro peformance. Hoffman had the flashier part and got all the attention, but I thought De Niro's understated performance was more impressive in that it was so different from his other roles. JACKIE BROWN didn't have the memorable scenes and the memorable lines that PULP FICTION had, but it was a better film overall, imho. And De Niro did wonders with his small part. He's so subtle that it often looks like he's doing nothing. Here's what Samuel Jackson says sbout De Niro's performance in JACKIE BROWN: "He kicks so much ass doing nothing."

    De Niro

    by w. leach

I'll see anything that Robert De Niro is in, but I think he makes a stronger impression in movies where he has a small role. Don't get me wrong: the movies with Scorsese (including the very underrated NEW YORK NEW YORK) are absolutely brilliant. That was then. Today we're so used to his style of acting (and everything that came after it) that we tend to forget how groundbreaking it was in the first place. Everybody knows "You talkin' to me?" but many (including friends of mine) can't pinpoint what movie it came from or why it was said in the first place. It's like "To be or not to be." Everyone knows the first part but what about the rest? In more recent years, it's been "Whaddaya mean I'm funny?" -- Joe Pesci's signature line from GOODFELLAS. De Niro's supporting work is almost as good as his leading man work. Check 'em out: THE GODFATHER PART II, BRAZIL, THE UNTOUCHABLES, BACKDRAFT, COP LAND, and JACKIE BROWN. He only has small roles in these films, popping up throughout, yet each performance is as brilliant as his early "New York" movies. He won the Best Supporting Actor award for THE GODFATHER PART II playing the young Vito Corleone, but he could have easily won for the other five films I listed. ROCKY & BULLWINKLE sounds like a very interesting idea as a live-action movie (let's forget the atrocious BORIS & NATASHA, shall we??), and it will be interesting to see Robert De Niro playing an honest-to-goodness cartoon character for the first time in his career. Reminds me of the time Elizabeth Taylor made a feature comeback playing Fred Flintstone's mother-in-law in THE FLINTSTONES, and...hm...let's just hope De Niro has better luck.

Finally, someone else who wonders what the hell De Niro was doing in Jackie Brown. Love the movie, love the other actors, but anyone could have played that role, it was as if he was walking through it. As for Wag the Dog, I loved it, I thought it was such a great script, but I do understand why people hated it, typical of Mamet, us Mamet geeks heap praise upon anything he does and the rest of the world usually detests it (sometimes for good reason, can you say Oleanna, boys and girls!)I'm still trying to deal with John Glover as a complete and total queen in Love, Valour etc. (insert Home shudder here) Glover!

    DeNiro and Comedy

    by ruok

For anyone who doesn't think Bobbie can do comedy must've obviously forgotten all about the wonderfully delightful film "Midnight Run." We need him to do more films like this instead of re-hashing his Scorcese role over and over again. He was even pretty funny in "Marvin's Room." Dying's easy. Comedy is hard.

    by mr_noodle

I think it's kind of interesting that they don't even have the title of the film on the poster. Yeah, they name the characters, but unless there are 80 million strong Rocky and Bullwinkle fans out there, I don't think that too many others are going to give a rats ass about this production. Sure, Russo looks slinky (yummy), and DeNiro looks like a thicker Doogie Howser from Starship Troopers, but I'm not sure that this film is going to appeal. Looks like it could be another super-stinker from Universal.

on the subject of Diniro comedy...

    by everett robert

...how can we forget to mention Mad Dog and Glory, maybe I'm one of a few people, but I really enjoyed that movie and it was great seing DiNiro play opposite his usual "charecthers" all actors want to spread their wings and not get typecasted, that's why DiNiro does a lot of comedies and lower profoile roles, becasue, like all good actors should, he wants to continue to horn and shape his craft

    That's "Mister" Dinero to you...

    by pseudo

Some previous posts have noted that Mr. Dinero may be doing a Rocky and Bullwinkle film for the fun of it. Why the hell not? Is there any law, rule, or maxim that states "once a dramatic actor always a dramatic actor?" Or perhaps, as some other actors have, Mr. Dinero may want to do a film that younger audiences would enjoy. Career decision, he's the producer of this, right? Perhaps there's some career motivation occuring here. In order to get some producing experience perhaps Mr. Dinero must have some on-screen involvement in the film. Hopefully, I hope at least, he's doing this because he enjoyed the script and thinks we might too. Whatever the reason I know I'm at least interested in seeing this. I just want to know if they finally get moose and squirrell.
    Cheers,

    DeNiro's in R&B For a Good Reason...

    by ktak

...his company (Tribecca) is producing the film. I can't believe nobody knew this. I thought we're all supposed to be movie fanatics. Believe me, DeNiro has a vested interest in making this production succeed. If it means taking a role that some might think is "beneath" him, then so be it -- that's BUSINESS! Personally, I admire DeNiro for not taking himself too seriously.

    by maniacalmichael

After seeing AUSTIN POWERS - THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME this afternoon, I wonder if they didn't cast the wrong actress as Natasha. I like Rene Russo a lot, but I have trouble picturing her in this kind of movie (let alone a CGI Rocky & Bullwinkle). From her performance as Ivana Humpalot, I think Kristen Johnson would have made a great Natasha. She's got a good mix of the funny & the sexy.
