I like Raimi, and I think the books could offer a good source for a TV show, but thus far it looks like a slightly more lushly financed production of Hercules or Xenia.

    by etrigan_

It doesn't look promising. Hercules and Xena took a couple of viewings to get into but there was a quirk and style to them that made them guilt free, fun entertainment. With Terry Goodkind as the inspiration, I can't see this being very quirky or fun. I'd like to be wrong as there's no sword and sorcery on the TV these days...

Goodkind espouses some Ayn Rand type objectivism mixed with a more modern libertarian bent. Very anti-commie/anti-socialist. But this does not really come through too much until book 6 or so, then it really goes downhill from there. Lots of talking, philosophy less stabbing bad guys.
He can write a decent scene and the first couple of books are pretty good.

For those who have not read the books, just a little outline of the series, not too many spoilers.
A country lad who unknowingly turns out to be an heir to a kingdom and a magical talisman. Think Aragon if he did not knew who he was and mix in Frodo and the ring. A damsel in distress with a secret power of her own. A forbidden love. Both trade turns being captured and rescued for twelve books. Throw in a couple ultimate evils some S&M and a happy ending.

I seem to be one of the few people on these message boards these days who had a great time reading these books. I read them all and my wife is on the 7th book and rushing through them. We have both been optomistic with Raimi being behind the production - but the trailer looks to be a huge let down. Looks like a sci-fi series. The landscapes look grand, but the characters are too clean looking and too pretty. Zedd doens't look old enough and Chase doesn't look tough enough. Kahlan releasing her power looked cheesy and Richard just doesn't seem to look like he has that deep intelligence the character possesses. They also shouldn't have changed the name of the series. Any fans of the book who don't know about the show will now probably miss this while thumbing through the channels. All in all, this looks DOA. I'll watch the first episode, but after seeing that trailer, I have no hopes at all for this series. :(

What an awful husband you must be to subject your wife to the special kind of hell that is book 7. Don't tell me that you cannot skip book 7 and 8 completely and not lose anything. Why did we need the supremely ungifted to threated magic when the chimes were already doing so? After a whole book on richard's sister, how many pages are devoted to her in the rest of the series? I smell filler.

"Legend of the Seeker" refers to Richard and his sword. Richards character is "The Seeker of Truth" and his sword is called "The Sword of Truth". The truth is the first 3 books were ok. The following books were a repetitive bore. George RR Martin has nothing to fear. Well, except for cholesterol and updating his webpage.

Of course the scary thing with Martin is that you can get attached to a character and then he kills them !!

Still, despite losing a few more pieces (e.g. a nose) than he had at the beginning of the series, Tyrion keeps on going, got to love that in an ant-hero.

    It cannot be emphasized enough...

    by gopher

Terry Goodkind's series BLOWS. Read the first 4 books and not only was it derivative of Jordan's WoT (not something you should pattern yourself after) but also the writing was about the most misogynistic I've ever read. I wish I could say he's the worst author I've ever come across but that distinction is held by David Eddings. Pray no one makes a tv series from his novels. As for the trailer, yes it looked amateurish and typical american tv fare - body beautiful types with poor acting. This won't last long, thank God. I'll wait for Martin's Song of Ice and Fire to come out. I'd also wouldn't mind seeing Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn too.

Remember folks! Goodkind blows, Martin rules. That way you can't go wrong.

No? GOOD! That movie was utter shite! Waste of the talent that was involved--even a waste of the non-talent that was involved, I'm sure there was a brick fence they could have been bulding somewhere. So now another project is changing its name--based on a book written long before Harry Potter--into of all things "Seeker"? It's like anything with Quest in the title that isn't Johnny Quest...the word is tainted! Don't use it! For God's sake, the call is coming from inside the house!!!

    by laughing irishman

I've read them both. Honestly, I love them both for very different reasons. I don't like the polished look of the Legend of the Seeker. I will watch it tho. As for FIre and Ice, I will definately watch those and get HBO or was it Showtime, just so I CAN watch it.

Now, if they would only do the Dark Elfs series and a decent Dragonlance Series.

  • You just watch. Somebody at HBO will get a whiff of this show, get all scared, shit themselves, and whip the other small testicle types at the office into a frenzy. The BBC are onboard for ASoIaF

    by werthead

The BBC have agreed to cofund ASoIaF with HBO, so it's a long way from being a dead project. HBO are just taking their time over it. Whilst it would be nice to think this was for artistic reasons so the writers get everything just right, it's more likely to do with the ludicrous amounts of money they've spent on Band of Brothers 2, John Adams etc.

As for the Goodkind series, the fact that they don't mention anywhere in the trailer or anywhere on the website that it's based on the books is very odd.

As for Goodkind's political leanings, based on his books and the character of Dick Rahl in particualr: right-wing. Ultra, ultra right-wing, in a massacring unarmed peace protestors for no logical reason kind of way.

    by pornking

Then the show won't be a complete disaster. Unlike you retards, I actually liked some of the books in the series and appreciated the message and values. All you people ragging on the series for the Mord Sith and their obvious parallels to a dominatrix need to be more adventurous. The scenes where Richard is tortured by Denna are exhiliarating if you put yourself in his place. Just think about it. Completely at the mercy of a woman who really can make you hurt. You know she's not fucking around. My kind of woman, a hardcore psycho bitch. Stop being so faux outraged, so stiff upper lipped and whitebread.

    by itchy

and make him shit maggots into Terry Goodkind's queer little ponytail. Even the bloated and pointless last couple novels he wrote in the Wheel of Time series kicked Terry's lame ass. The Sword of Truth series is the absolute shittiest fantasy series I've ever read. It's trite, unimaginative, derivative, infantile and cloying. If fantasy readers were beer drinkers, Sword of Truth would be Bud Light - unquestionably shitty and horrible, but inexplicably popular. George RR Martin is great, but that fat lazy fuck will never, ever finish that series at a 1 book per 5 year pace. Steven Erickson's Malazan series is terrific, and he cranks out 1100 incredibly complex pages per year - if you haven't tried it, get the first book (Gardens of the Moon) and read it ... and stick with it. It takes half the book to get any clue what's going on.

    SoIaF Casting.

    by venardhi

Tyrion is in his late 20s on the outside. If Jaime was 16 or 17 at the end of the war, and the war was 15 years ago, he and Cercei would be about 32. Tyrion is about 4-5 years younger, so he can't be over 30. The whole cast is pretty young when you think about it. That is my main worry. Who the hell are they going to find that can pull off Dany at 13? Or Sansa at 12? or Arya at 9?
