Okay...So At Least One Of The Posters For THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Remake Is Cool...
Merrick here...
Coming Soon has published two new posters for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake (for which we recently saw THIS TRAILER).
I'm not knocked out by the first piece of art...it's neither inventive or evocative & it's pretty much what one would expect for a project like this.
Now...the second poster...the one enshrunken below...is Geeky-retro-cool and all kindsa nifty in my book. Not that the word 'nifty' should be in anyone's book these days.

Yeah

Klaatu Barada Necktie!
-
As it were. Also third.
-
I generally love Keanu's work. I will let the end product speak for itself. The poster does look cool though. And Iron-King, well done for you non first. I too have been getting a couple. I guess I hang out on this site too long, lol.
-
Go Gort!
-
This movie does NOT deserve a serious talkback. I will see it, and I may even enjoy it, but Bob Wise is the BOMB, and his movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
-
You know it is,first I am Legend, now this,im telling you Plan 9 IS COMING.
-
Years ago, when I was standing Chief of the Watch on a submarine out of Charleston (SSBN 629), my UI (under instruction) watchstander and I would often debate the merits of who should star in a TDTESS remake, and this guy said KEANU!!! This was, like, 15 years ago. How prescient is that shit? I think I was rooting for David Bowie or something stupid like that. Alas, no more subs for fat, old, retired me. Thank god!
-
Lay off Plan Nine. That film is perfect just the way it is. Those Medveds can just go stuff themselves with their own golden turkey awards. Worst film ever, indeed! Harumph. The "The Haunting" remake is so bad it makes Plan 9 look like The Magnificent Ambersons.
-
Uwe Boll could do it. Probably worse than Ed Wood!
-
Klaatu, Aw Hail Naw!
-
Is this really legit? Looks like a cross from a still of the original & one of the Transformers poster! Even worse, it could be Gort "re-imagined" as a Galactus sized robot, which would be crap!

the second poster is pretty cool looking.
by the guy who slept through everything.
I'm still undecided on this remake, however Jennifer Connolley is gorgeous.
-
Jennifer "Connolley" is gorgeous, but so is my penis. And both it and Jennifer have equivalant acting skills. I'm sorry, but it needed saying. Don't taze me, bro.

I am hoping the studio has balls and keeps a bleak ending ..
by wowsah156
..just like The Mist.
-
Gort, needs to be voiced by John DiMaggio. Bite Gort's shiny metal ass!
-
Google "plan 9 remake." Prepare for your mind to be blown.
-
The second one looks like it was slapped together by a kid and some markers. And it certainly wouldn't raise any interest, unless you were familiar with the original film from 57 years ago!
-
Point Break, Speed, The Matrick: kick-ass.
-
Did none of you see The Matrick? It was loads better than The Matrix.
-
is worse than the average IMDB comment.
-
yet movie looks Stanky rank!
-
than IN the average IMDB post.
-
there was no monster... only puzzled men of courage alone with shadows and darkness.
-
Ya beat me to it. The copywriter probably hung himself soon after he was told to change "was" to "is" by some marketing monkey terrified that people may get confused.
Did nobody think to just leave out the auxiliary verb and save the dignity of an entire promotional campaign innit? -
Hope this will be good.
-
... where Gort trashes a city or something, maybe I'll sneak into a screening and put up with the eco-bullshit. Gort for President.
-
I'm shocked you actually think that's an official poster. Then again, I probably shouldn't be.
-
You hope it'll be good? You're kidding, right? 90% (and I'm being charitable here) of remakes are unnecessary crap. And you think this will be any different?
-
That's not Gort, that's Cyclops from the X-Men. I wonder if marvel will sure for character infringement? ;-)
-
If DAY had to be remade (and Gods know it didn't), then Reeves is perfect to be in it ... as Gort. That's about the extent of his performing range. A friend put it best when, during MATRIX II, Reeves' character looks lost and asks "What should we do now?", to which my friend muttered under his breath "Try 'acting'."
-
And despite what all the naysayers are saying, people will go to see this in droves out of curiosity.

I have the feeling this movie will do well box office wise
by i am rocko
...sci fi, christmas time, Kenau, buying tickets as new Bond and Harry Potter are house full.
Whether it will be any good is another matter, although I like that poster. -
If the movie sucks (which it probably will), I will always associate the poster with a shitty movie. In other words, it doesn't go on my wall.
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
Oh . . . wait . . . Crap!
-
Oh wait.
Copycats -
...when is the Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane-starring, Harvey Fierstein produced Broadway musical (soon thereafter to be turned into a motion picture) version of Glen Or Glenda? being made. You KNOW it'll eventually have to happen.
-
just sayin
-
smile. everything will be fine.
-
...Necktie? Nickle? Noodle? It's an 'N' word...!
-
A better poster could be made using photoshop or graffiti programs.
-
I am slowly turning into th egeezer who stands on the porch waving his fist at the young un's. I was at the opening day for Dark Knight and they ran this trailer. At the end (as I usually do) I vocalized my opinion, usually by saying THERE! MAYBE? or PASS!! When I went PASS!! the kid in front of me, all of 14, looked back like he was hurt. His eyes said "Dude, that looked awesome! Shit blowing up, hot chicks, the Matrix guy...what's not to like?" So I asked him if he had ever seen the original, especially as how it is set here in DC. He said no, it's a black and white movie, and that it sucked. Funny how it sucks and you've never seen it, I reprimanded him. I asked him to please give it a try, that TCM usually shows it once a month, and he would probably get a kick out of seeing so many DC landmarks as they appeared in the 50's. Then the next trailer started and he probably forgot about what the Geeze had asked of him. But I hope not. The Day The Earth Stood Still is one of my all time favorites, on my "Desert Island" list if you will, and it pains me to think of what's going to come of this new effort.
The Day The Earth Said "Woah", I think, I read here before. Gag. Keneau would make a better Gort that Klateauu.
I was a little heartbroken when I found out that Michael Rennie never filmed any scenes here in DC (at Arlington, at the Lincoln Memorial or on the Mall). The Arlington shot is pretty obvious that it's rear screen projection, but I WAS SURE that they had gone to the Lincoln Memorial. Hell, I was so moved by the iconography of this alien visiting the most sacred shrine to Democracy this nation has...that in 1990 I drove my dogs from Louisville up to DC just so I could have a "timeless" picture of them in front of Abe (and I am so glad that I did, for even though Woofers & LadyBugs are no longer with me in the flesh (their urns are on my desk) I have timeless pictures of them and myself in front of the Shrine of America. It was a fun road trip, too. Left Loserville, drove 12 hours, dropped my friend off at Union Station to catch her train, then over to the Mall for a photoshoot, back in the car and home 27 hours after I left.
Good times, indeed.
PLEASE GOD DON'T LET THIS SUCK!!!
The guy who plays Sam Anders on BSG would have been a good Klateauu. But Keneau....fucking Christ!!! -
Coda:
After we got married the wife I moved to the DC area for her job promotion. Woofers passed away only 90 days after we made the move (almost 15), but LadyBugs was with us for another three years (and passed peacefully one month shy of her 17th birthday). On Colombus Day of 2006 I took her down to the mall to once again take pictures in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
If yer interested, those photos are posted on me myspace page (backslash beltwaybrian) if you are curious.
Damn, I am geezing out, ain't I??? -
...is any day that unoriginal town churns out unnecessary remakes.
-
I'm actually looking forward to this movie despite my love of the original.
-
You know it, I know it. It's the only way to make this movie work.
-
Do they make less money that way? How much do these bastards make from a ticked as opposed to a rental?
-
Zap that IS Gort, zap...
-
without seeing hardly anything you can tell that..
-
thas fo sho
-
Well that's me spent...
-
did not plan to have the Gort character (at least in his recognizable form) says volumes about the incompetents handling this film. This movie is like Creature From the Black Lagoon...just leave it alone in it's classic glory.
-
...just sayin'
-
the first poster is cooler.
-
I think it was Keanu that wrecked it for me. The guy just doesn't excite me as an actor.
-
...is eaten by a giant squid at the end.
-
how Merrick assumes our voice and our collective opinion of what's cool...
-
He gets so much crap... I happen to like him, he seems like a cool guy, and ive liked him in most movies he has been in *sigh* I bet dreams of Bill and Ted haunt him at night as much as they haunt his career. Just because it is so easy to throw a punch at Keanu, shouldn't prompt everyone to do so
-
Even if you had never seen the original this just looks like a pile of stinky ka ka.
-
Piece of shit!
-
but they should have left the "IS" off of them, sounds all kinds of wrong. I remember seeing the original on tv when I was a kid but I should see it again. This new version will probably be like the War Of The Worlds remake with Tom Cruise: good until the 3rd act where they totally screw it up the ass into a shitfest. War was kickass until Tom and Dakota, who was acting circles around the whole cast even tho she was overacting a lot, went in the cellar with Tim Robbins.
-
Jennifer Connelly is beautiful....having said that, her beauty makes her unrelatable, i dont worry about her if i were to see here in danger in the film, I think it has something to do with her eyes, nothing wrong with them, they just dont convey emotion in a way that i think people latch onto as well as other actresses, the smallest thing can make someone seem interesting or uninteresting, Keanu is cool, he seems like a guy with alot of ideas in his head, give em a break. He has made alot of good movie choices, he seems to go for interesting roles.....he's real
-
Sold! Although, Keanu Reeves gets a free pass from me for life... Go Bill & Ted!
-
Kanuu Reeves in it will be shit. Anything.
-
OK. Look. Love the K-man(that's right, I said it-out loud)But there are at LEAST fiddy or more other actors who coulda been more effective in several of Mr Reeves most recent roles. I'm SO worried that he'll sleepwalk thru this movie. I'm still mad at him for killing the CONSTANTINE franchise its one of the best graphics out there and if HELLBOY could get resurrected then so should Connie and Papa Midnite. REcast the lead (PLEASE) reboot the story, (dont kill the kid), TELL COONSTANTINE'S STORY NOT SOME ERSATZ LOVE INTEREST and KEEP DJIMON - he really wants to reprise the role and he was perfect for it. AND IF NICK CAGE'S OVERLY GAUNT ASS SHOWS UP ANYWHERE NEAR THE REDO - I'M QUITTING Y'ALL.
Man. How DO you movie types stay in business?
Thank you for playing.
