Quint has a ton of pics from the floor of Comic-Con! SPIRIT, WATCHMEN, GOON, Weta's HALO line, NECA and more!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some pics from the floor of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
But first, check out this creepy thing I saw on the way to the convention:

Let’s start out with a little look back. I remember going out the year before SPIDER-MAN came out and back then preview night was sparsely attended and that early walk around the floor provided a much needed uncrowded moment to explore the hall, the new booths and gave you a chance to enjoy the sellers, flip through some comics or posters or toys.
That doesn’t exist anymore. Now preview night looks like this:

And this year they’re finally treating this as the first day of the Con. If it’s going to be this busy, it might as well be. They showed the JJ Abrams pilot FRINGE, which Capone caught and will be writing up tonight. Most of the booths selling Con exclusives began their lines today as well.
What you’re going to see below are a lot of pics from the floor with little description. The Con is in full swing tomorrow, so look for reports from the thick of things from me, Beaks and Capone.
The coolest stand is easily WB’s booth, where they’ve shipped in Nite Owl’s ship from WATCHMEN. Behold Archimedes:

I’ve also noticed a trend where people aren’t premiering toys or collectibles as much anymore. Seems that’s now all at Toyfare every year, so forgive anything that’s already known, but I’m including because it looks cool to me.
You won’t have to worry about that with this batch, though. Weta unveiled their Halo line, which was pretty sweet:

I also grabbed a pic of their Reepicheep:

Gentle Giant had some cool shit, too, like 30 DAYS OF NIGHT collectibles, an awesome creepy Freddy figure, some cool WALL-E and BOLT figures as well as really beautiful busts from THE WIZARD OF OZ:

And check out these DARK CRYSTAL prototypes… forgot who’s doing these, but very sweet:

These are old, but I love them. I want them in my house now. From NECA:

Now lets look at the SPIRIT booth:

And now some toys (I think these are pretty new):

Here are a couple Angel of Death pieces, the first a toy, the second a lifesize Bust by Sideshow:

And here’s a look at the Monster from FEAST II:

This is a drill vehicle from the GI JOE film, although pics of this came out of a recent New York con:

And the Iron Monger made an appearance at the Marvel booth:

Bond’s new ride did as well (albeit not in Marvel’s booth):

And finally a trip to Eric Powell’s GOON booth showed a new In Production Poster for the upcoming animated feature being helmed by David Fincher. Take a look:

That’s what caught my eye during the hectic preview night. Tomorrow’s a long day with 9 interviews on the schedule and a full day of panels. You’ll see updates from damn near everything from Beaks, Capone and myself, so keep your eyes peeled!

-

-
Is that Tommy Pickles?
-
fuck yes
-
Can't wait for WATCHMEN.
-
That's just the preview crowd, i am not looking forward to the crowds this year. lol imagine the smell that's going to be created with all those people this year......
-
She's the second best picture... next to Archimedes that is.
-
just sayin', why?
-
How long have people known David Fincher was Doing anything related to this? Any news on release dates or anything like that?
-
There was a big story on this site. Look through the old posts.
-
bloody disgusting has some pics up of Jason from the new F13th. Plus a look at the hood he wears before he scores the hockey mask.
-
pretty sweet
-
A Goon movie will kick ass.
-
And now im literally turned off by it,its nothing more then a Hollywood tool and isn't even remotly about comics anymore. Its about movies.I remember when every pannel was about comics and now theres very few pannels and even those are releated to some movie coming out and not the book. Even the creators are more intrested in getting there book exposed so it can be turned into a movie. Now I know this is a movie site and I love movies, but they need to change the name and start over with a comics only convention, where its nothing but comics and comic creators talking about comics.
-
I hope Fincher goes the animation route. I think he could do some pretty mind blowing things with this particular story if he wasn't hindered by the prohibitive realities of live action filmmaking. Don't get me wrong, he's already a brilliant live action director, but if his talent was unleashed on an animated feature there's no telling what he'd achieve.

I would knock the bottom out of that chick in the blue (bottom middle). Yummy!
The first photo is by far the best though. All the imagination on display at the Con pales in comparison to the fascinatingly fucked up shit parading around in the real world. Fuck Denise Richards! That nutty old crippled broad in the wheelchair should have her own reality show. I'd pay to hear the stimulating conversations between her and the dummy.
NOTE: For the record, I would gladly fuck Denise Richards. Call me, Denise...
-
But I'm glad I didn't have to wade through that mess of people.

is animated - CG

The crowds make the con look like a miserable experience
by IndustryKiller!
I live in LA and know a lot of people who attend and so far i havent heard a single worthwhile reason to go. Waiting in massive lines all day long?? Yeah no thanks. The panels sound like nothing but a press conference full of lame questions and bored actors and directors you can't get near. i really don't see the point.

From the good years? Is the Goon an Indy homage cartoon?

That must be his wife on his lap. Larf.

so basically its fuck the talent, the critics and the resellers
by bacci40
jeez, i remember feeling special when the owner of my local comic shop put me on the list so i could get into preview night...so it was me, my pal and a few hundred other peeps...this is just fookin nuts...i miss the con, but not the crowds
-
too clean...check out how banged up archie is
-
and in some of the panels, like the golden/silver age and the kirby panel, you get to meet and greet with the greats...some of which wont be around for much longer....too bad you didnt go back in the 80s and 90s...before hollywood discovered it
-
...with the blue shirt in the second pic.....I want to know her.
-
Fuck the airlines. I won't support the airline industry.
-
It's still early, so things could change, but it looks like they're making it comic book accuarte.
-
Not this year though. The excitement is gone & all the hot girls seem to young for me. Fiddlesticks!
-
That's got me more excited than anything. Man, Comic Con looks weak this year. Guess I'll see for myself on Saturday.
-
Sweet.
-
WOW Archimedes looks cool!
-
I WANT THAT GOON STANDEE!!!
-
I mean, if that's even possible. Seriously, she can go inside my head and do horrible, horrible things. Come on girl, let's electro-fuck... awesome.
-
drill from Ninja Turtles.
doesn't give me any hope for GI Joe, thats for sure.
-
If it's directed by the same dude from the first film. I'm in! Thanks for the pics that stuff looked sweet wish I was there.
-
Makes me long a whole lot less for being there. That and the 2 grand one needs to drop on airfare and hotel for 4 days.
I went to the preview night in 2006. It was about as busy as Sunday 2005 - a lot of people eager to see as much as possible in a limited amount of time; a good, tolerable, crowd. But every other day on the floor in 2006 was terrible. You didn't walk around so much as propel yourself along by bouncing off other people. Getting anywhere was like navigating an obstacle course, where the obstacles are (slowly) moving, in any given, often unpredictable, direction. Anytime any kind of gap opened, it was almost imediatley filled again by the swell of bodies.
I understand there were about 125,000 people there in 2006, a new record. But in 2007 they broke that record and sold out on Saturday. How many people qualifies as a "sell out"? 128,000? 130,000? And it looks like this year is sold out as well. That's a whole lot of people! 2005 was my first time there. I thought the crowds were big but not too big. 2006 was a bit too much. I could not stand having to deal with the "sell out" crowds that Comic Con now attracts. Just too many people.

Reepicheep need to pass that chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia!
by Cletus Van Damme
Looks like a great year.
-
Looking forward to WATCHMEN, based on what I've seen.
-
My thoughts exactly. That's way I'm here at work this year and not dipping into my vacation time. After 6yrs of progressively larger and larger crowds, I don't think I'm missing anything.
-
It absolutely is a marketing event for Hollywood at this point, and comics are pretty much an afterthought, but you know what? That's not such a terrible thing. The fact that Hollywood is putting this much money and manpower into a festival that caters entirely to geeks and fans of genre entertainment is a truly remarkable thing. I mean think about the fact that we are living i a day and age where the most important annual events in the film industry are the Oscars, Cannes, Sundance, and Comic Con. There are countless comic book conventions in this country, so is it really that terrible that Hollywood has co-opted one of them? And don't think for a minute that this level of exposure doesn't drive new fans to the source material. I can't tell you how many copies of Watchmen my store has sold since the trailer debuted last week.
-
The crowds would be too much for me to truly enjoy myself but I'm sorry not to be going as I know I'm missing some really cool stuff.
In the two years I attended I got to sit and listen to (off the top of my head) Ray Harryhausen, Bruce Campbell, Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Roger Corman, John Romita Sr & Jr, Walter Koenig, JMS, David Cronenberg talk about their experiences in their respective industries. Plus stuff like "the world's worst cartoons", the short film festival, and the "comic con exclusive" previews that you won't see anywhere else.
-
So close, yet so far.
-
Even if its just a poster. One step closer to Bone i guess.
Feast was awesome, I hope they can bring the same energy toward the second one and third.
-
mrfan would have paid you actual cash, not an IOU, to go get to the bottom of that story.
-
but Nite Owl's ship looked fantastic.
-
Loved the report. Wish I was there and that's what a great travel report does. I don't want Comic Con ever to leave San Diego.
