It's Jim Carrey in an Affirmative Trailer for YES MAN!

Published at:  Jul 23, 2008 11:23:25 AM CDT

Beaks here...

I don't quite know what you're expecting from a formula Jim Carrey comedy at this late date. This trailer, I imagine. I can't say as I laughed a whole bunch whilst watching it, but... it sure is chipper!

This isn't to suggest there's anything explicitly wrong with this teaser for YES MAN. It's buoyant, it's got the reigning World Champion of "Cute" (Ms. Zooey Deschanel), and it's directed by the ever underappreciated Peyton Reed. I interviewed Reed ages ago for AICN (in support of the badly mishandled DOWN WITH LOVE), and I've been pulling for the guy ever since. He's a talented filmmaker and a very nice guy. Ain't too many of either in this town.

Because you care, I was on set the day Carrey did his bungee jump off the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena. It was, rather conveniently, the last day of shooting for the film.

YES MAN hits theaters December 19th.

this looks painfully formulaic, but 'bring it on' was so much better than it should have been, and 'down w/ love' is a clever delight. i can't say too many positive things about 'the break up', other than it probably would have been worse in another director's hands.

because of Eliza. Fun, well-directed movie. And seeing Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords in this trailer made me laugh reflexively. Gotta like a Terrence Stamp cameo, too. That having been said, this movie looks like a piece of shit. Not a complete piece of shit for the aforementioned reasons, but a piece of shit. (Corny concept.)

    Bat3 aka Gotham City

    by samurai sark

Summary - As Gotham creeps closer to the edge of chaos, her citizens must decide if they will fight to keep their home, or give in to despair.

ACT I - After being hunted for one year, Batman has become a ruthless pessimist. Even those closest to him (Alfred, Fox, Gordon) fear his losing hope. His only achievement; a complex security system that allows the Batman to become 'Big Brother' to Gotham City.

But a new criminal has discovered Batman's system, and is attempting to use his twisted genius to crack the system and unlock the mystery of the Batman

ACT II - Bruce Wayne is introduced to a beautiful foreign diplomat who hopes to encourage the wealthy and powerful to save their city. Bruce Wayne becomes intrigued by her motives, and sees his lost ideology in this mysterious woman.

Meanwhile, Batman's security system is hacked, with the mysterious attacker(s) leaving strange riddles. Batman interrogates the Joker (makeup-less and imprisoned in Arkham), but leaves without answers. A jewelry thief dressed as a cat says she wants to help Batman find this 'Riddler', but he doesn't trust her.

ACT III - The Riddler unlocks the secrets of the Batman, sabotaging his entire operation. The Batman is forced to retreat to his shelter in the city.

He captures the Riddler with the aid of Catwoman. The Riddler refuses to cooperate, but the Batman out-wits him, making him reveal the truth - The Riddler is working for the beautiful foreign diplomat.

Batman confronts her and realizes she is the daughter of Ra's al Ghul, who has somehow restored his health and has returned to destroy both Batman and Gotham once and for all.

    Cast: Batman - Bale
    Catwoman - Scarlett Johannson
    Riddler - Hugo Weaving
    Joker - Joeseph Gordon Levitt
Talia al Ghul - Monica Bellucci
Ra's al Ghul - Liam Neeson

comedy like Liar,Liar. I actually liked Carrey's performance as Count Orlaf where he was able to slow down and play with his delivery and line readings.."I'm sorry, I don't speak monkeee..",etc.This looks like the manic, "gee-ain't-I-wacky", Carrey of old. And I do mean OLD. It's like watching Robin Williams doing his tired schtik in RV.

The guy has so much talent. I thought he's finally moving away from his 90's roots. Guess not. He made that terrible Number 23 watchable with his performance. Man on the moon, Truman show... hell even Cable Guy... He's an awesome actor. JC should be Jack Nicholson to this generation. But no. When he finally makes a movie it's fucking "Yes Man". There is a visual association there. When Carrey tried different(The Majestic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon) audiences said "no thanks". What else can he do? If people will only pay the man to act crazy and talk out of his ass, he has no choice but to do formulaic, safe comedies. I guess I'm just really happy to see him back to the funny roles again, and I'm honestly sold on that fact alone. And I loved him in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One of the best movies of that year. Haters hate but his comedy stuff still makes me laugh. It doesn't hurt that Zoey Deschanel is in this too. What a little slice of cute she is. Reply to Talkback

  • Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey are all being slammed for doing stuff that we all used to laugh at. Now here's my theory. There is a certain number of films that we can see that are similar to their previous films before we get bored. So, if you're a teenager today and haven't seen The Waterboy, Billy Madison and Big Daddy, then You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Click are entertaining to you. But if you grew up in the 90s and have seen those films, it's just a little bit old. I've seen Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty and Me, Myself & Irene (strangly didn't laugh very much during any of them), so I don't feel any need to see Yes Man. Soon (sooner for some than others), Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Will Ferrell and Jonah Hill will fall into this trap. Hopefully they will be able to pull off enjoyable yet artistically satifying careers, but likely, they'll end up 3rd generation Chevy Chases.

    Zing, Pondscum. Zing indeed.

    by the winged doucheman

Tom Hanks was never a zany comedian making animal noises and spastically jumping around. He was always likable and passable as a romantic lead. Granted, he made his name as a dude dressed like a chick. But he wasn't slapsticky, and he was lined up with some phenomenal talent that he was on par with, but never purposefully overshadowed. When he made the gradual transition (A League of their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, Forest Gump) it seemed natural. When Carrey did it, it was a shock to the system for many who just wanted to see their monkey dance. After the Truman show and Man on the Moon, he had to go back to the well with Me, Myself and Irene. Carrey is an awesome, versatile actor, but people will always see him as the goofy guy, and tolerate him in serious roles, rather than embrace him like they do with Hanks.

    by the winged doucheman

I was actually thinking the same thing. When you have those guys in an emotional role, you don't see the character, you think "Wow, Jim Carrey/Dwayne Johnson/Mike Myers/Seth Rogen is 'acting'". It doesn't seem natural. Its like Tom Cruise crying in Magnolia over his dad or Hulk Hogan crying over his little brother in the aftermath of the Zeus attack. When Hanks/Crowe/Hoffman (either one) does it, its their character doing it. Some are just better than others I guess.

    by tvguy4566

First he couldn't lie. Now he can only say yes to yes and no questions. What is next? He can only say every other word?
Carrey was a once brilliant comedian, but like most comedians in movies, he is starting to become too safe and predictable. It is only a matter of time that he dons a fat suit to play multiple characters in a movie.

He has been totally boxed in by his fans who dont want to see anything other than rubberface jim. This does happen. There are some artists who wont explore other areas becuase they are afraid of offending their fans. I read a review of gig by norhern irish gay singing Star Brian Kenneddy. The reviwer noted that the minute Kennedy tried something new, the fans in the audience gave him a look as if to say give us the hits and dont try anything new. Kenneddy gave them the hits. Kenneddy got his big break by gigging with van morrison.

I remember staying up late as a kid to watch Bachelor party as a kid for the brief nudity and sexual innuendo, but it wasn't as mindblowingly awesome as I remembered after watching it recently. Internet nudity has spoiled me.

    Yeah Cable Guy was Awesome

Criminally panned that I think Ben Stiller was never given an opportunity to direct again until recently. Carrey was a tour de force in playing one genuinely frightening psycho.

Dumb and Dumber > The Cable Guy

    by thunderbolt ross

I like the Cable Guy okay but it gets a lot of play just cause it's "dark", methinks.

    "Was I chewing gum before?"

This looks pretty funny. Not much in the way of conflict, but it looks good.

    This is a reboot...

    by depalma25

of Liar, Liar. Chris Nolan directed it. Zooey Deschanel will soon die just as her performance picks up considerable buzz. Yes Man has an opening weekend box-office take of 156 million dollars. The late Deschanel is praised up and down. She inhabited this character, many say. Talk of winning the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch is the entertaiment story of the year.

I'm not going to lie, I liked Liar Liar. I'm just happy it looks nothing like 23.

I will give it a chance...

    by ninja nerd

I was amused by the trailer and laughed at the "was I chewing gum before?" line. I'll catch a matinee and forget about it until it shows up on Starz HD. I like Jim Carrey and like most of his movies. Loved "Eternal Sunshine"...probably his best in my opinion...and hated him as The Riddler in the Batman crapfest. Everything else is somewhere in between.

    Interesting Supporting Cast

    by flickchick85

Zooey Deschanel, Terrance Stamp, Bradley Cooper, and John Michael Higgins...strange combo. I think I'll probably Netflix it just for that. But I don't hate Jim Carrey like some people, probably because I almost never waste money on his crappier movies, and he does make good ones every now and then.

is a film with Carrey and Will Ferrell. Though either alone can do it, too.

    Jim in Batman Forever...

    by prossor

...he was freakin nuanced like Olivier and Brando compared to the cackling idiot Tommy Lee Jones, whose two-face was the most restardedly played villains ever. Every time there's a scene involved with Two Face it just cuts to him for 2 seconds at a time howling wtih laughter at whatever, whether it was chasing Batman or reacting to wahtever Riddler said. cripes

    Just call it Jim Carrey

    by filmfunk

A movie about a guy who learns to stop saying NO and start saying YES!?Fucking hell! what an amazing concept and the perfect vehicle for Jim.Jesus! he looks tired thru the entire trailer, like he's just given in and has resigned to the fact he has no-where to go but with these safe, Jim Carrey as Jim Carrey movies.Move over Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy, Jim's coming through.

I know you're making fun, but you actually wrote up a great movie premise. Make it a hard R rating, and it could be awesome!
