Thank You For Being A Friend Estelle Getty...
Hey guys. Estelle Getty died yesterday after a battle with dementia. Although her role as the hilariously uncensored Sophia in Golden Girls is first and foremost in my mind, I was surprised to find both TOOTSIE and MANNEQUIN on her filmography. I completely forgot she was in Mannequin!
Growing up THE GOLDEN GIRLS was always on in my house. My mom loved Betty White and that show really does hold up. I've been watching some reruns today as the news has been covering her death and it really is hilarious and perfectly cast, even though Getty was a year younger than Bea Arthur all the while playing her elderly mother.
Sophia really stole that show. Her and Betty White always seemed to be competing for being the funniest, but I think Sophia's frank insults edge out White's innocent ignorance.
My thoughts are with Ms. Getty's friends, family and fans. I think I can speak for many fans when I say Thank You For Being Our Friend.

I have many fond memories of Golden Girls from when I was younger, and Sophia was always my favorite character. RIP, Estelle.

Golden Girls kinda gets a bad rap, but it really was a funny show. One of the reasons for it's great humor was Estelle Getty. Her character never held back on anyone.

Her comedy timing was impeccible! She was the Don Rickles of the Golden Girls, and a wonderful actress. She will be dearly missed. It was a shame that she had to suffer from dementia. I just hope she recognized how much her fans adored her.

had perfect delivery. I watched it with my grandma and mom when I was really young, but looking back and occasionally watching reruns, it was so intelligently written and the four actresses were fucking perfect for their roles. Bea Arthur as the straight character against Getty and White couldn't have been more right.

Oh, and RIP Ms Getty. I may have been far from a fan of the Golden Girls, but you couldn't deny the sheer comedic power on show, and Ms. Getty was the brightest of the lot. -

in that it was perfectly cast program. For the generation, who like me were born in the middle 1970's and grew up in the 1980's and 1990's, it was the first time we heard the names of legends like Bea Arthur , Betty white and Estelle Getty. Getty was the reason you wathched the show, her delivery was just great but it was her comic timing that outshone everyone. But they were all great. including Rue McClonnaghan who brought a kind of dramatic edge to the show. The golden Girls was perfect show, perfectly performed. Betty White was outstanding.

RIP. I'm a 22 year old guy, but I can say what few people my age can without being ashamed. My grandmother hooked me on Golden Girls reruns. That and Three's Company, All in the Family, Family Ties and a slough of old comedies. Estelle Getty was great.

But watching the opening there sure took me back, I can't believe I still remember the song and some of the scenes! I was shocked to learn that she wasn't actually that old when the show was on. Either the make up was really good, or it was just that I was too young to notice. Her character sure was a funny old bitch, we need more of those on comedies these days, no one dare write a funny line in case it offends someone.

Audiences today a far to cynical to see a show about a group of elderly ladies in a condominium. This is a show from different era feat. actors who worked hard on broadway and in the theatre in general and toiled away on tv for years. Bea Arthur was a braodway legend along with Elaine Stricht.

But based on the reaction, kudos to AICN for wiping his comment off the face of the planet. I went into the comments section of this story cringing, afraid that little flameboys would put an unappropriate capper on this wonderful lady's life. I was pleasantly surprised and heartened. You guys have been stellar, and I'm glad the only one who pulled flameboy BS got wiped out. Yay! Estelle, thanks for the years of laughs.

Watching "The Golden Girls" doesn't make you a "fag." Great comedy writing and great comic performances are what they are, regardless of the four-old-ladies premise. Getty was very talented, and hilarious on the show. RIP. It looks like rfjason's post has been deleted. I'm curious as to what he said, but it's probably good they dumped it. Sounds like a raging asshole.

Just a solid show up and down. Stands the test of time and still makes me laugh when I'm flipping through the channels. It is interesting that you will never see a show with that dynamic probably ever again. RIP Estelle. You are already tremendously missed.

... was the show that launched Quentin Tarrentino's acting career. Brilliant show, fantastic writing, and of course, one of the greatest sitcom casts ever assembled. And, Estelle Getty was in the mix in every one. She was the Keith Hernandez of Sitcoms with 7 straight Emmy noms, all well deserved. Her delivery and timing holds up with the best classic comedians, guys like Rickles, Youngman, and even the master himself, Rodney. Smart young comedians will study her work. We'll miss you, Estelle, but you'll live on in syndication!

As a total aint it queer news guy, it is great to see all this. I did think that the percent of straight guys watching was comparable to the percent who'd watch SITC, didn't notice the similarities before. It sank w/o Bea Arthur because each of the four brought something crucial to the mix.

Compare her in Stop or My Mom Will Shoot with GG, either they travelled back in time to get a younger version of her for the movie...or the make-up was that damn good.
