Bryan Singer Signing On To New Warner Bros. Superhero Movie??

Published at:  Jul 22, 2008 11:40:22 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Bryan Singer, director of the first two “X-Men” movies and “Superman Returns,” is in talks to produce Warner Bros.’ big screen superhero project “Capeshooters.”

The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:

J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani will write the screenplay, which follows two down-on-their-luck slackers who specialize in shooting videos of superheroes. They find themselves on the run when they uncover evidence that a legendary superhero actually is evil.

Lavin and Damiani were producers on last year's very short-lived Fox reality series "Anchorwoman."

"Capeshooters" is based on a not-yet-published graphic novel by Rob Liefeld ("Youngblood").

    by cobbio

Since "Superman Returns," Bryan Singer hasn't been the same quality director I've known all these years. The trailer for "Valkyrie" didn't look too bad, but sounded insultingly silly. Cruise playing a German, with no accent? This was a bad directing decision, though I'm sure they're ADR-ing in better vocals.
"Capeshooters" sounds a bit interesting, so I hope it'll be good. Singer's going to have to show me something, though. The bad taste from "Superman" hasn't left me yet.

    by kungfuhustler84

I personally consider X-Men 2 one of the greatest comic movies in years. The guy can direct without a doubt. His prowess as a filmmaker has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with his sexual orientation. I think it really just depends on the projects he selects. So fuck off with that ignorant bull shit please.

    by qweruiop

...finally got the hollywood break he was looking for. Everybody should read the great Comics Journal article on "The Image Story", about the rise and fall (at least compared to its once historic heights) of Image comics. There the article strongly criticizes Liefeld as one of those guys who was too busy pitching ideas to Hollywood and having lunch with Cruise and Spielberg to ever get an real comic book work done. Great read, especially when it points out how for all his self-proclaimed ideas about his comic books becoming movie franchises and blockbusters, they never even got to the script stage. Well it finally looks like Liefeld's effort will unfortunately come to fruition. Ugh.

ZING! I really used to like his artwork back when he was working with Louise Simonson. He got REALLY lazy when he started writing for himself and/or hiring his own writers. He's also got no follow through. He starts lots of projects and never finishes them. It's a shame because I think he could be doing a lot better for himself if he could focus on completing one project before starting another.

    by dingus khan

that dickwad owes me about $500 from when i was 11-13 years old.

i hope for his new book that every character is named a mispelled compound word, like "bluudaxe" or "wulfkutt", or the last name of an important person, like "luther king" or "mozart". or, fuck, just a variation on an already established popular character "spydermann" or "kaptain USA"

i hope there are lots of shitty onomatopoeias like "kurgglepap!" or "vixXxen!!"

i hope the depth of the characters go as far as "you are my sister. you are my father. you are my brother...and ENEMY!" and no further.

i hope there are 9 different chromium embossed collectible variant covers for issue #1 (at $7.50 a piece) and then an 8 month lull before issue #2.

i hope everyone wears a solid-colored leotard, tons of pouches, shoulder pads, and has cotton-candy hair.

i hope all of the artists that emulated his "style" (dan fraga, dan panosian, chap yaep) all tag team hiw wife, joy beth kreel.

remember when "doom's IV" (his blatant fantastic four rip-off) was "going to be directed by steven spielberg?" that shit wasn't even written yet, either. still hasn't, as far as i know.

    i fucking hate rob liefeld.

    Rob Liefield's "Art" and/or "Design"

    by laserpants

    Every character must...
    1) Grimace constantly as if constipated no matter what is going on, 2) Wear gigantic shoulder pads and utility belts with hundreds and hundreds of pouches which contain god only knows what, 3) Have tiny or non-existent feet (often hidden behind rocks or smoke, 4) Barely resemble a human-being due to the fact that Liefield has seemingly no working knowledge of human anatomy, 5) Carry several gigantic toaster shaped guns that have two or three barrels, 6) Feature hundreds of randomly scribbled lines all over their bodies which are, I assume, supposed to be cross-hatching as done by a monkey with down's syndrome stung out on painkiller
Put simply, Liefield is, hands down, the worst comics 'artist" in human history. THE WORST.

Calm down. There was no gay prejudice. The guy was just pointing out that Superman Returns was gay, and it sucked. No prejudice, just observation. Batman and Robin was also gay and it sucked. Rob Liefeld is a Genius, pure and simple.

    by chewtoy

I mean, he has cracked the code for getting people to give him money for doing little or nothing. Anyone remember a few years back when he sold some studio on his new comic strip about superheroes visiting a psychologist? Jennifer Lopez was attached to the thing... And it turned out to be based on all of 3 or 4 "Ziggy" style one-panel cartoons he had drawn, with each one having an incredibly lame, pun oriented caption for a punchline. Like the Human Torch parody saying "I get pretty hot under the collar sometimes, and I get fired up and need to let off some steam..." And somebody paid money for the rights to them. Seriously. Look up "Liefeld Shrink" sometime on google images if you want to see how little effort or thought went into them, and marvel at how he could get that thin premise optioned in a movie deal. Why the hell should he bother to practice drawing?

This is going to sound naive and uninformed...

    by yaw

...but I was carried away by the special effects in "Superman Returns;" especially when compared to the fairly cartoonish and flashy nature of Singer's "X-Men" films (except for that great establishing sequence of Wolverin's and the beauty when he shotgun barrel cleaved is in two and the shot spills out), "Superman Returns" felt like an entirely different director was helming it. The colour pallete has such depth and I strongly doubt we'll ever seen a cape work as well as Superman's in that movie. And that was what got me, the heightening of the normal universe with its almost nostalgic sheen of light draped over everything or bathed in an eerie cold to the point that the special effects felt completely natural to the film. I think that its serious approach to effects work will be appreciated more in the future than during its initial release with all its expectations. Such a beautiful film to look at; the shot of Superman monitoring the world from space could be a painting in a museum. Movie had a great scope to it; but it also had that fuckin' "Clown Killer" serial murderer as a henchmen which just seemed really distasteful in that context and very jarring. That type of layering works to soul-chilling effect in "Heat" with Waingro but in "Superman Returns?" Hell no. Felt like a breach of contract with the audience.

was a complete wasted and a travesty to the character. Singer understood Xmen for the most part, but He had no idea on how to do Superman, they should revamp it, kinda like Hulk.
SR was a crappy quasi sequel to the
chris reeve movies, it made no sense. rather than starting over like they did with batman, they just sort of continued the old franchise, but not really. they couldn't establish Supe's strenght, he struggles to stop a plane, but then has no trouble lifting an entire continent, then they gave him a kid, which has never happened in his 60+ years in comics. Fuck SR, we need a movie that understands and does justice to the classic character.

But if 50 theaters is all we get I sure as hell hope one of them is close enough to where I live, but it will be doubtful considering I'm in the middle of nowhere with the nearest large center is a six hour drive away... and even that city probably wouldn't get it if it's only on 50 screens. At the very least one of them better be in Halifax so all the people who were actually in it and working on it can go see it.

Barring that, The Locarno Film festival in Switzerland is playing the movie in roughly two weeks. Hopefully it gets some great buzz. It's not in contention but it will be up for a peoples choice award for it's "premiere" as well as some other Variety sponsored award. And then it will be playing throughout the month at the Fantasy Filmfest in Germany... I can't remember if I stated it or not, but the actual cost of the film is more than just slightly north of 30mil. It's "official" budget is about 40 million (originaly it was closer to 32million) and final costs are rumored to be about 47 million dollars.

Thank goodness history is not being kind to Superman Returns

    by cotton mcknight

X men 3 is largely being forgotten, as it should be, but Superman Returns is the one that is being regarded as a colossal failure. GOOD. I agree about some of the special effects and the ONLY thing cool about the whole movie was the idea of Superman monitoring the earth from above. That was just awesome. But he even fucked that up by taking Lois up there with him (how did she breathe, anyway?) and bitching about how everyone needs him. The movie was an abomination. Just an absolute abomination.

    by rupee88

It's amazing how Singer killed all the goodwill he built up by just one collossal clusterfuck of SR. I agree that it is good that SR is widely regarded as a failure..almsot as bad as the Matrix sequels. The script was the worst thing about it...Superman having a son, being a stalker, having a miscast Lois Lane, having a miscast Lex Luthor, and back to having a shitty script. Singer just fucked up good. You have to blame the producers and WB for greenlighting the script but they knew it would be easy money and the film surely did make a profit. But we can take some satisfaction in that we all agree that it is POS>

    by monkeymanreturns

I think Singer ruined what could have been a great new series of Superman movies...I think he had a long term vision of where the character was going, but the initial story was so bad, he crashed and burned. Anyone of us could write a better movie - unfortunately, we don't have the contacts to do so - but a better movie could and should have been made. Still - why the gay hatred? Are the majority of talkbackers Nazis? Does prejudice really have a place on a website about loving film? Seriously - thousands, millions died in the first and second world wars so you could have the freedom you enjoy - and you repay them with prejudice caused by fear and intolerance. I wish we did have a real Superman...his example could lead us all...on this story: sounds like a good story, and if done right (I still have hope for Singer) will be interesting to see...and here's something controversial...Watchmen - overrated. If you havent read it - read it - and then sit back and ask yourself - Is it really that good? It's good yes, but is it the Holy Grail? I'd say...no.

    Watchment overrated? No.

    by v'shael

You know, when I was 10, I read Dracula. Thought it was crap. I also read Animal Farm that year. I thought it was very silly.
Do you know what the problem was? Those books were far deeper than I was capable of appreciating. When I was older, and had a broader range of life experience, as well as a knowledge of history and society, I realised why those books are the awesome classics they are.

I respectfully suggest Watchmen is just so frakkin deep for a graphic novel, it's depth currently eludes you.

If 99% of its readers say it's the pinnacle of graphic novels, and you say it isn't, maybe the fault lies not with the stars dear Brutus, but in your self?

Pick on Singer for being a commitaphobe with projects, not for his sexuality. And as for Christian Bale beating his mom I Am Batman, I think he's just taking the blame for Harvey. Seriously though, I don't think it's anything to villify him over until we know the facts. Josh Brolin has a history of abuse toward the awesomely hot Diane Lane and this site LOVES the crap out of him. I read Bale shoved "someone" (don't know who) over a long-standing family feud, so his mom and sister called the cops. I seriously doubt he went Patrick Bateman on anyone.

    Singer Needs To Be Rehabilitated

    by laserpants

He needs to step away from the camera, lay off the coke and adolescent malaysian boy prostitutes, and check into rehab. He used to be able to make good movies, and then, he threw a queeny star-fit, walked off of X3, and immediately went about turning Superman into a creepy stalker metrosexual. Look, Bryan, if I may call you that, you didn't have to make a Superman movie to get off, you could have hired some guy to dress up like Superman and let him mount you. Oh, and for the record, the Donner movies (and their multiple ever-worsening sequels) all SUCKED ASS, and not in the way you like. Yeah, Reeves was good, yeah there is a good soundtrack, hell I'd even go so far as to say the art direction on Krypton was good. Everything else? Embarrassingly bad.

There's already a comic book about a "Superman" type hero who turns out to be evil. It's called Invincible and it is one of the best superhero comics out there. by hedgehog000

SR had a number of great moments - particularly the plane rescue - Superman wasn't struggling to lift a plane - he was struggling to do it without killing everyone on board from the sudden deceleration.

Unfortunately, the plot trapped the character - blocking in his relationship with Lois where there's nowhere really to go, throwing in a ridiculous son, and replaying the villainous plot of Superman 1.

Yaw... Superman Returns Effects and Cinematography

    by autodidact

I agree with you about that. I've only seen the movie once, but the shot that sticks with me most is when Superman is lifting that giant hunk of kryptonite, and we get the super wide shot of it passing through the clouds. They give way just so and there is lightning between the kryptonite and the clouds, and everything's so big you can't even see Superman. The sense of scale is so perfect, it almost gives you vertigo if seen in good enough quality. Not exactly vertigo but sort of that sick feeling you get when you see a force of nature or something so out of scale like ten thousand crows lined up for miles on the power lines. So although I hate Superman Returns for being so dumb, especially the kid thing, I do agree with you that it has some of the best special effects ever created.

Face It... Superman Returns is GREAT

    by mst3kpimp

Apparently many of you are too young or too dense to appreciate a
movie that doesnt resort to the usual action devices and hollow
gimmicks to propel it's story. Superman films can be the most rewarding not because they are "dark" or cutting edge but because they are timeless and are a greater metaphor for the human experience. Singer understands this and while not perfect by a long shot SR has more soul and substance than the countless forgetable attempts to portray comic characters over the last decade. Singer could have hit all the predictable marks to satisfy a mainstream audience but it would have been at the expense of the characters. I really enjoy the protrayal of Superman as troubled and somewhat dysfunctional as he no doubt would be in reality. This was a film that refused to be merely an action spectical but challenged preconceptions and made the veiwer actually consider things. Haveing said that I fully understand that the second one "which Singer MUST do" will have all that and more so you dopes can reevaulate this film. I think we've seen how much these properties can improve with a second film as Dark Knight shows us, it's time to stop the hate and let Singer finish what he started!

Some might say that Liefeld is misunderstood...

    by rev_skarekroe

...that his artwork is really just ultrastylized, like that of Kirby or Sienkiewicz or McKean (or, in the fine art world, Picass). I say that isn't true, because those guys are actually aware of the rules that they're breaking. I suppose someone could make the argument that Liefeld is the equivalent of an outsider artist or folk artist, and that his lack of any formal training creates an entirely new perspective on art, like a comic book version of Grandma Moses, but that someone will not be me.

MonkeyManReturns - All the Gay Hate...

    by tonytodd

Okay, again, there hasn't been any gay prejudice in this thread: Prejudice is unreasoned. "Prejudging" before you know anything about it. As has been said, there IS reason to bag on the cinemtic takes of comicbook heroes by gays: Batman & Robin with its fetish nipple and rubber butts, neon everywhere, and Superman Returns with its anal rape scene, superthong, and casting of its lead not based on talent or screen presence, but STRICTLY because he had gay sex with the director!!!! These are all actual LEGITIMATE REASONS for the gay hate in regards to superhero movies. This is hate based on fact, not PREjudging before the fact. And in response to your WWII guys fighting for my rights - they fought for my freedom; freedom of speech, freedom to have an opinion. I am repaying them by excercising it, amidst other people whining that opinions they don't like ought be "censored." You don't have to like, or agree with my opinion, but don't mischarecterize my "hate" as "prejudice" when it's not; its based on legitimate reasons. And don't label me as intolerant just because I have an opinion you don't like. DO label those as intolerant who are suggesting censorship of ideas, just because they don't agree with them.

    Gay Bashing.

    by micturatingbenjamin

Not gay bashing, here. I used gay above in the way that Joel Schumacher is gay, and made a GAY fucking Batman movie. He made a GAY Vampire movie, couldn't help it. Watch Lost Boys and tell me the greased up ponytail dude is shirtless because that reflects the reality of California boardwalk life. Greased dude playing a sax? Bet you the director's gay. But when you have a pride parade, and Superman and Batman start making out, you can say, 'Hey, I'm pretty sure Supes and Batman aren't meant to be gay icons in the comics. Here they are being gay.' Fuck you if you're gay and can't stand it when someone says you're fucking gay.
I'm tired of having people say shit like 'How dare you call something gay, it's like saying the n-word or using religious slurs!' when describing something that looks like it should be on the West Hollywood Pride Parade's Grand Marshall float.Superman wears undies outside of his pants, and that's lame. But when you make them Hanes 'Her Way' boy cut briefs, that's fucking gay. And Superman's costume in Returns is him with tight vinyl clothes, boy cut briefs, a leather fucking cape, and a spit curl. That's guess what? FUCKING GAY! You gonna be gay? Fine! Love cock all day long, and have a cock-chug marathon! But if you tape it, and someone shows it, and I happen to see it, don't get fucking offended when I say 'Wow! Now THAT is fucking GAY.'Returns was the overhanded expression of Singer's homosexual aesthetic, he felt he had two hits under his belt, fuck art, let's dance. I say, go on with your bad self, but hey, buddy, you made Superman gay.Liefeld sucks as an artist, and as a storyteller. He's a good premise guy, but shit, his fucking 'art' is painful to fucking watch. This movie will be gay, because Singer doesn't have any people telling him NO, people will think this is gay. And it will be shitty because Rob Liefeld, since his Levis commercial has been shitty. Shitty and gay. Not gay bashing, but telling it like it is. Also, gays should be allowed to marry, and as such let me be the first to congratulate Mssrs. Singer and Liefeld. Hee hee hee! (I love juvenile humor.)

    by rev_skarekroe

Hey, I'm with you. I don't want any homoerotic overtones when I'm watching a story about strapping, muscular men at the height of physical perfection, wearing tight, tight clothing perfectly contoured to show off every rippling muscular curve. If I'm watching a story about strong, healthy guys heaving and sweating as they show off their athletic prowess by wrestling each other into submission, it better be totally straight, like me. And don't put any of that icky "love interest" stuff in my superhero movies either! Females just get in the way of all that killer man-on-man heterosexual superhero action. And hey, eggsalad, you read my post or you wouldn't have responded to it. So joke's on you, asshole.

I love the people on Singer threads who say shit like "Just because he's gay and makes gay-ass movies, doesn't mean he makes gay-ass movies because he is gay!" by yaw

Reread my own post to see what I had said - and the stress of my finals shows... there's one moment where I talk about Wolverine's establishing scene and I really jumble my words, almost in a dyslexic way; I don't have dyslexia but when I'm stressed my meaning is lost between the thought and the mechanics, like they are swimming around. *NOW BACK TO REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING* The use of the word "vertigo" is perfect; that the size and scope of nature can be so bewildering that it becomes the moment takes on a surreal quality. Almost as if you are forced to look outside of your own size and re-evaluate a vastly expanded view of the world: an enlightened belittlement. And birds will do it; there's a great YOUTUBE video to Broken Social Scene's "Lover's Spit" with these great undulating masses of starlings collecting from all over New York and New Jersey. Mesmerizing. Singer's vision in "Superman Returns" gave us the type of images that don't come around very often in most films, much less commercial ones. I'm glad you appreciated it; it's so good to be able to take something like that out of a movie. That experience.

You bet your ass they wouldn't, because their face wouldn't be planted before the privacy of a computer, Cheeto crumbs in their prepubescent goatees, a copy of Playgirl on standby. I say that because of this study LINK: http://tinyurl.com/66k8ao which finds that most homophobes actually have repressed homosexual feelings, so they act macho or "gay bash" to cover it up. by kungfuhustler84

blaming the sexual orientation of a director as reason for a movie sucking is completely ignorant and has no ground whatsoever. I suppose if Truman Capote or Tennessee Williams had been more straight they would have had less impact? Oh wait, their literary work is incredible. As is Ernest Hemingway's, Kurt Vonnegut Jr's and George Orwell's. I suppose if James Dean had been more openly heterosexual he would have been a better actor? Oh wait, he was only in three films and his work has made an impact on generations. The point is, all kinds of people are capable of incredible, or less than credible work. The choices they make in terms of sexuality usually never directly affect their work, unless its impact drives them to prove others wrong. This being said, I did not enjoy Superman Returns as much upon a second viewing. Not because I knew Bryan Singer was gay, but because the choices he made regarding the project were not ones I agreed with (i.e. the son). Also, the stereotypical "gay" traits really have no standing in today's culture. Not every homosexual man is flamboyant or would choose to, say emphasize the crotch of a superhero's costume. The decision could have just as easily been made by an especially eclectic heterosexual costume designer who felt it would give the suit a modern touch, which is in fact, exactly what happened. Some of the stuff you people are saying is so ridiculous and without grounds or actual fact that it baffles me.

  • Jul 23, 2008 11:47:09 PM CDT

Why are ya'll looking at Superman's crotch anyway?

    by yaw

I didn't notice that once. And I mean that. I'm baffled by what some of you have read into his film. Its Harry's sexual intellect and his fairly compulsive nature and not his orientation that dictate his choices of subjects and metaphors. The most that Bryan Singer's ever done is use the SOCIAL context of homosexuality and, quite possibly, his own personal experience to inform his films. Its sexual veracity on trial here; and gender preferences DO NOT govern that. Its individual.

I think one of the problems is that some of ya'll are confusing two very unrelated things.

For example, sexually fetishistic images of women's breasts in film are more often than not a marketing ploy; while I expect that Michael Bay does like breasts A LOT, I think that his ideas about film much more direct their exposure and prominence in his work.

If we were all ignorant of his sexual orientation a lot of these comments would never exist. I accept Singer's sexuality as merely a part of his individuality and to call it the defining trait of his career says more about the talkbacker than about the director; and I am not saying some of these talkbackers are latent homosexuals, merely that these petty and vicious comments detract from appreciating a film for what it is, even if it REALLY SUCKS like some believe. And which may be the case. But because a film sucks doesn't make the director gay; if there's a link for the audience, it's a value association: BAD=GAY. And it is a simple and ignorant one.

*Harry, if you read this, I hope you are not offended. You seem pretty open to discussing that part of your life so I took liberties with using it as an model. You can be a weird, occasionally disconcerting, guy (most of us are, and often use the anonymity of the internets to disguise it) but I find that there's a great degree of courage in your disclosure. Yaw - you're right and wrong

    by movietool

Singer being gay clearly has a thematic effect on all of his work. And when applied to Superman a lot of those themes make sense: being an outsider, desiring a "normal" life like everyone else, getting people to see what you are inside and not judge you because of what you look like, or act like, (or who you decide to sleep with). All of that is ripe fodder for a Superman movie, and I think Singer touched on some of those themes in Superman Returns very well. The Superman suit is a different matter, however. This is one instance where Singer's sexuality clearly overpowered his good sense. The SR suit was clearly the gay fantasy version of the classic suit. Superman's outfit is iconic. It has remained (outside of a few "events" to shake up lagging comic sales) essentially unchanged since the creation of the character. The bikini-cut briefs, the leather cape, the angled belt all had an extremely sexualizing effect on Superman's appearance in the film. And I'm sorry, but it made Superman look like a gay man going to a costume party, and not a straight man going out to defend innocents. There's nothing wrong with a gay lifestyle - but there is something wrong with so sexualizing Superman's appearance that it becomes a distraction to the audience. It's as if someone decided to make a Wonder Woman movie and replaced her red and gold armored bustier with straight lingerie. It could be argued that the classic Wonder Woman outfit is pretty much lingerie anyways, right? So why not just drop that neckline even lower, push the cleavage up to her neck, and put a little pattern on it that subliminally reminds you of lace? Pretty much the same, right? Wrong. There's a line you can cross there where her look goes from being slightly titillating to flat-out overtly sexualized. It's a line that shouldn't be crossed because as I said, it becomes a distraction.
