Leno’s Last Day: May 29!! Conan’s First Day: June 1!!

Published at:  Jul 22, 2008 12:31:03 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Is official: Conan O’Brien will end his stint at “Late Night” in the first quarter of 2009 and take over “Tonight” June 1.

Jimmy Fallon will become the third host of "Late Night" in March or April.

Jay Leno, disguised as a bald, bearded reporter, posed questions to NBC brass, much as Jimmy Kimmel did at a recent ABC presentation. ”Is it true you offered Leno a fifth hour on the Today Show?” asked the faux journalist.

A whole new subset will have to get used to Conan now

Meaning those that fall asleep at 11:30 and just can not for the life of them stay up past that time.

    Disaster imminent

    by jj9126

Leno isn't my cup of tea, but tossing aside a dependable ratings champ for someone NOT significantly younger seems foolish.

By 2011: Leno will be in first place, Conan in second and Letterman will finish off his contract in third place.

I haven't watched either of these shows in years. A couple of little things called The Daily Show and The Colbert Report satisfies my need for late night haha before bed. Still I suppose this means lots to baby boomers. Or something.

I was on Leno once. Well, technically it was an image of me. I had created a successful internet meme in 2004; it made the AP and he profiled it on his show.

    by cbebop007

I hate Leno. He's unfunny and doesn't deserve the success he's seen. However, I love both Letterman and Conan. If they're up against each other, how do I choose which to watch?!

    by karuma

...is dead. Or so I hear. Leno will take over the 11:30 to 12:30 spot on ABC, moving Kimmel to 12:30 where he will see increased viewers. Fallon will do much better than Conan did in that spot while Conan will be killed by Leno and Letterman, leading to major consternation by NBC but not much concern because they will still pull in millions from advertisers. Carson to Conan, how far the mighty have fallen.

Ferguson was a genius standup twenty years ago, but put his efforts into stardom (slightly odd, considering he used to tour under the name "Bing Hitler").

Ferguson has made refererence to his standup days as "Bing Hitler" many times- is there a tape of his act floating around?
in addition to his opening monolog, the best part of his show is his interview style- he doesnt let people just pimp there movie/record/tv show but instead talks to them about whatever tickles his fancy...

Ferguson is in No way funnier than Conan (spelled O'Brien n00b. lrn2spell) :P Conan has been making people's sides split for the better part of the 90's until today. The guy's a comic genius who's not afraid to sacrifice his own image for the sake of a hilarious bit. Conan has earned his rightful place as the King of Late Night and will sit on that throne with perfect comedic timing, great conversation with guests and complete random spontanteity.

    Atomica- Have you see Ferguson?

    by spice-orange

Craig Ferguson (while i miss Kilborn) has THE best monologues on late night. period. they're ACTUALLY monologues. Not rehash that Leno and David do everynight, and not lame lets-comment-on-how-quiet-the-audience-is-because-my-jokes-suck-tonight routine that Conan does seemingly every chance he gets.

They're honest to goodness monologues with thought, and call-backs and classically trained comic material there.

Craig isn't perfect, but Conan hasn't been great in years. face it. It all its very stale, and it Conan feels like a goofy version of David, only David is ironically funny still, because he doesn't give a shit.

Everyone needs to check out Ferguson and give him a chance. he tells a story and comments on culture and society. its very good stuff. Almost Daily Show quality, only more silly and mainstream.

The people who think Conan is "Genius" are the same people who still watch SNL. You're holding onto the past! give it up! the best days are behind us!

  • Well, I take that back...during the writer's strike Leno actually was kinda funny...I think they problem is his writers. I just find that humor so boring, and Jay just won't let himself go off-script. On the other hand, I would often skip Jay for something else and tune in ALWAYS for Conan. I admit his manic improv style may not suit some but I LOVE it! And he is 10 TIMES the interviewer than Jay or Dave ever was. His interviews are so much more engaging and fun and draws the actors off-script so much or involves them using a completey out-of-character-for-the-actor script. Now he gets A-listers at last. It's gonna be a great decade or so with Conan at the helm.

Never been the same since Carson left

    by romanocc

I used to watch Johnny Carson as a kid all the way up to when I was in College when he retired in 1992, and LateNight has just never been the same. Leno has a great monologue, but just plays it too safe and can't interview worth a dick. Letterman lost his edge when he got 14 million from CBS, as he was great at 12:30, but he has gotten real stale over the years. Conan has great bits, cause his roots are from writing for SNL, but he is just not a comedian, so his whole schtick of being a doofus appeals to the Adam Sandler crowd. The guy after Letterman, I don't know who he is, is brutal, and his show is unwatchable. Jimmy Fallon? What is he going to just laugh the whole time like he would crack up during every skit on SNL, pleassse!!! I haven't watched late night TV on a consistent basis since Carson retired, and with Conan and Fallon along with a over the hill Letterman and that british guy after him, sorry, I just fall asleep at 11:30.

conan's stuff is not latenight material, letterman is stale dogshit, kimmel makes me nauseous and is a shithead, fallon is from the 9th circle of hell. leno may be lame but his standup background makes his monologues the best, and headlines is still amusing.

hold a candle to Graham Norton in the Uk. Why? its simple... They would not be allowed to do any of things that he does. mixing the studio audience with the guests is a great idea. its a very fun show and he is very funny. The series highlight was Martin Sheen. He has great sense of humour.

    Conan will OWN Late-night

    by tocksick

I actually thought Leno was funny during most of the 90's, at least his monologue - he has never been more than a mediocre interviewer. Conan on the other hand is the MAN - definitely the funniest host on Television. I love his quirky, self-deprecating humor and love his SPONTANEITY. He is so quick-witted and doesn't even need a script to be funny, as shown by his reactions to the audience and to unrehearsed moments with guests. June 1, 2009 can't come soon enough!
