Pilot Schmilot!! SciFi May Just Take GALACTICA Prequel CAPRICA Straight To Series!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2008 9:47:04 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

From the Hollywood Reporter:

“We’re not sure if [“Caprica” is] going to air as a backdoor pilot,” says Sci Fi Channel's executive vp of programming Mark Stern at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’re going to take a look at it and maybe just order it as a series from there. We are going to take delivery on it in a couple of weeks and then decide whether to air it as a standalone movie or as the premiere of a new series.”

“Caprica,” for those just joining us, is a prequel to “Battlestar Galactica” about the “creation” of the Cylons, man-made robots that eventually decimated humanity.

Other details from the TCA’s “Caprica” panel:

* Creator Ronald D. Moore isn’t saying how far from Cylon War I “Caprica” takes place.

* Moore says the 12 Colonies don’t get along all that well in this pre-Cylon War I era.

* There will be no “Lost”-ish flash-forwards to future events.

If anybody brought up anything about preschool-age Cylon Saul Tigh running around while the Cylons were being “invented,” it is not mentioned in the Hollywood Reporter’s story, which can be found here.

I wonder if they genuinely think it's quality work or if they just want to cash in on the built-in fanbase? Not that I care, can't wait to see it!

    Sci-Fi Can Go Fuck Themselves

    by itchy

Even if Caprica is actually good, which is doubtful, I don't think I can bring myself to watch it. Those fuckknobs at Sci-Fi would stretch 4 seasons out over 12, because they've got dick-all else to put on the air. So fuck them.

Sci-Fi Does Have Another Stargate Spin-Off...

    by blhotz

Um, someone needs to pay attention. Sci-Fi does have another Stargate spin-off called "Universe". Lol...

This could be cool. Sci-Fi has definitely uped their quality minus Dr. Who and Tin Man.

Um, actually, it IS a pilot.

    by executor

“We’re going to take a look at it and maybe just order it as a series from there." That's what a pilot is. It's an initial ep that studio execs look at to decide if it should go to series. If it were taken straight to series, that would mean they would order up an initial run of episodes before filming began on the first one.

    Just so we're clear...

    by obsd

Caprica will be a two hour pilot, then a year later we'll get the first half of season 1, then 2 years after that, we'll get the second half of season 1. Then five years after that we'll get all of season three, but it'll only be 4 episodes long. Then in anther 10 years we'll get season 4, but they'll only show an episode every 6 months. And after all of that time, we'll still be waiting for the second half of season 4 of BSG. Got it. Thanks, Sci-Fi channel! You aren't retards at all.

    by kurutteru yatsu

Are you fucking kidding me? Besides Galactica, Doctor Who is the only airing on Sci-Fi worth a damn, unless you count their "All Shitty Original Movie Weekends." Oh, and wrestling on Tuesday nights. Because that makes sense.

This series is going to suffer....

    by tvguy4566

some of the same problems as the Star Wars sequels. There are 12 colonies and Commanda Adama's family is intrical to the birth of the Cylons and this series? It will be only time before we see little Saul Tigh and little Laura Roslins. I bet there will be a little passing romance between little Laura and little Bill Adama... er... Adams. Was it really that important to use the Adama family for this series?
Personally, I think this show will destroy a lot of the mythology of Battlestar Galatica. I would have much rather have seen a Cylon war based series (or at least the time just before the Cylon war) although that might have been too expensive for the Sci-Fi channel. it still think even if they had to cut corners, it would be more entertaining than the show they are setting forth. And then it would make more sense to tie in characters from BSG to the series.

Enough with the shit that is the new BSG. Bad enough the new show was what it was, now you do a prequel to it? Want BSG, just keep the crappy show on so we can get more BSG Alumni on X new show reports, clicking the link to see if ole Dirk was getting some employment to only find out it's some douche who was on three episodes on the new show.

    Caprica wouldn't work

    by estacado1

The main attraction of BSG is the whole finding earth thing. With Caprica, there's nothing like that. It'll be a weekly moral drama about robot rights, and lame relationships. In other words, it'll be BSG season 3 only not in space.

    what's a pilot?

    by lord finesse

    VINCENT
    What's a pilot?

    JULES
Well, you know the shows on TV?

    VINCENT
    I don't watch TV.

    JULES
Yes, but you're aware that there's
    an invention called television, and
on that invention they show shows?

    VINCENT
    Yeah.

    JULES
Well, the way they pick the shows
on TV is they make one show, and
that show's called a pilot. And
they show that one show to the
people who pick the shows, and on
the strength of that one show, they
decide if they want to make more
    shows. Some get accepted and
become TV programs, and some don't,
and become nothing. She starred in
one of the ones that became
    nothing.

    They enter the apartment building.

Makes sense that the Colonies fought one another...

    by prof. pop-cult

Tom Zarek was considered a terrorist, after all. I hope this series also explains clearly why the Cylons exist -- logically, it makes the most sense that they were created by one of the Colonies (or an alliance of some of the Colonies) to fight against another Colony. I would also argue that it makes the most sense that it would be Caprica/Capricans which the Cylons were originally designed to fight against. Caprica and the Capricans have always struck me as the dominant Colonial culture among the 12. And I get this vibe Capricans are the most militaristic and their society is essentially fascist. Sure, "democracy" exists, but it is not a right of the people -- it is a "privilege" granted to the people by the military. That's just my theory/guess about the cultural divisions among the 12 Colonies, based on what little we've witnessed throughout the BSG series.

    Battlestarship Troopers, Prof. Pop-Cult?

    by voice o. reason

Interesting theory, but doesn't exactly really hold with what we were told about Caprica in "Dirty Hands". More elitist than fascist. They definitely think they're better than everyone else, though.
