Rumors of what's next for James Cameron...

Published at:  Jun 08, 1999 11:04:46 PM CDT

I just want to say... this isn't what I've heard. Word from around town is that Cameron is in absolutely no hurry at all to get behind the camera soon. I've heard he's enjoying fatherhood... and ya know... I don't blame him. Meanwhile his baby, T3 is tied up in a legal hell akin to what had happened with SPIDER-MAN. He's left the PLANET OF THE APES film behind. I hear he's doing on again and off again writing, and that he's just bracing for...well whatever is coming when the computers go "00 does not compute as a valid date. Error Error...." The people I talk to via the ol long distance tell me that Cameron is just being very non-commital about any of his projects. Now... As much as I want to see 'WHATEVER' is the next James Cameron movie... I also want him to take his time and be comfortable with what he's doing. Fatherhood has been known to change the priorities of many an artist, businessman and director (along with all types of other human and inhuman beings). Would I like to see Cameron take on WITH WINGS AS EAGLES? Oh yeah... I sure do. I adore the script, and I legitimately think it is one of the absolute best projects Arnold has... after the awesome glory known as CRUSADE. Take the following with a heavy dose of salt my friends...

Hi Harry, you won't believe this but I'll tell it like I heard it. I was
watching The Gossip Show on the E channel and one of the gossipers said
James Cameron is in talks to make WITH WINGS AS EAGLES one of his next
directing assignments now that TERMINATOR 3 is in legal hell. The gossip guy
said 20th Century Fox would co-finance the Schwarzenegger epic with
Paramount Pictures because Arnold and Jim have made them lots of money in
the past.

The gossiper also said that TRUE LIES 2 is next for Cameron. This is great
news because WITH WINGS AS EAGLES needed someone like Cameron to direct it
and who better than Arnold's great friend. I guess Cameron will start making
historic films like TITANIC and WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. ABking signing off.

P.S Remember, I heard all this from THE GOSSIP SHOW.

    Historical Films?!?

    by dead kid

Well...I've been hearing about With Wings as Eagles now since back in 96 when the Oak was pushing this film in some muscle mag. Indeed it will be awesome, even more so with Cameron behind the camera, but his bread and butter is Sci-Fi films, albeit quasi action/horror/romance sci-fi (Terminator films, Aliens, The Abyss) Though True Lies 2 sounds good, and WWAE definitely has potential, he should really do an about face after this one and go back to where his roots are (and no I don't mean Pirahna 2 the Spawning). After Titanic, True Lies 2, and WWAE (now that spidey is fin) it seems some of his die-hard fans will be waiting on a classic Cameron sci-fi/fantasy flick (a'la T3) unfortunately for quite awhile...

    by tinrib

Cameron's movies are great. Although, "the Abyss" was ok. I am sure he could do a mean Spiderman flick. I would like to see Terminator 3 made but I can't really picture where he can go with the story line. Either film he does, there is a good chance it will be good.

    I STILL enjoy True Lies!

    by unicorn

One of my favorite movies of all time, in fact, even if you deleted the JamieLee dancing-in-her-undies scene. Just a fun takeoff of 007 in a lot of ways and a GREAT job for the underdog actor of the time, Tom Arnold (Cameron must have seen something the rest of the world didn't to hire that guy at the time!).

If JC can do half as good a job on TL2 as he did on the original it will still be worth seeing. I'd also like to see T3 but, frankly, if they were premiering side by side in a theatre I'd pick TL2!!

Can anyone post a brief summary of which historical event the Eagle movie covers? I understand it is during WW2, but does it cover a specific event, timeframe, or just the whole darn war? Thanks.

Cameron Is A *Very* Good Writer

    by mrbeaks

The "King Of The World" is probably the most efficient storyteller around, and he owes a great deal of his success to his own finesse in writing tightly plotted screenplays. What's your support for labeling him a bad writer. The clunky dialogue in TITANIC? Yeah, it made me wince, too, but he was writing outside of the sci-fi/action genre for the first time, and trying to make an old-style epic film. He clearly didn't have a handle on who these people were, outside of simple stock characters; hence, their dialogue was never convincing. Still, look at both TERMINATOR films (especially the first,) and TRUE LIES (I can go into great length defending this one, but I don't have the time.) Anyone who can pen those movies (even if he was jumping off from Harlan Ellison) is hardly a bad writer.

    king of the world? pah!

    by uncle cracky

He's not king of MY world, baby. And as long as one voice cries out against his tyranny, he will never be king of the world. All he is is a filmmaker that used to tell good stories but now just makes money. And as for all his films, watch the credits. His name is not the only one there, I assure you.

Why James Cameron should direct WITH WINGS AS EAGLES

    by abking

Thanks Harry for putting up my scoop. Now to WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. I hope this rumor is the truth because Cameron is the only director who should helm this war film. Why??? Because he works BEST with Schwarzenegger and would know how to deliver the GOODS. I own the script and it is right up there with CRUSADE (as Harry would say). The character of Ostermann was written for Arnold and only he can pull it off. The script has some of the most tense action scenes and kick ass dialouge (sp). Mr. Cameron, if you are reading this, PLEASE make a deal with Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox since you already made TITANIC with them and direct WITH WINGS AS EAGLES.

    Fantastic News!

    by mike d

Get Jim away from T3 and PLANET OF THE APES. Those projects are dead in the water as far as I'm concerned. Films like this new one are what takes Cameron to another level. And although I do believe he's an exceptional writer, I do agree with most that the script for this one is best left in another's hands. I'm alos very pleased to see Arnold take on this role. I've always been 100% in favor of all actors who attempt to step out of their stereo-types. However, I downright hated TRUE LIES, and fear that I might have to stomache its sequel before we get to ON WINGS OF EAGLES.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I can't believe some of you guys hate TRUE LIES so much. That film ROCKED and gave Arnold a new kind of role, the same way WITH WINGS AS EAGLES will. TL is one of the best, most fun action extravaganzas ever produced. James Cameron is a great writter if he could write THE TERMINATOR, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, ALIENS, ABYSS and TRUE LIES. I see nothing wrong with the writting for TITANIC, but we all have our opinions. As for the guy that said Cameron won't do WITH WINGS AS EAGLES because of the quote in PREMIERE MAGAZINE about "laboring in someone elses house", remember, it was Columbia Pictures that got the rights and Cameron is a Fox man. The reason he could do EAGLES is because he already worked with Paramount Pictures and gave them a BLOCKBUSTER with TITANIC. By the way, when I said WWAS is Cameron's next historic film, I didn't mean EAGLES is based on historic fact like TITANIC. I meant it's historic because it takes place during WWII. Buy the script if you haven't read it yet.

James Cameron is a overrated hack

    by vilos cohaagen

Cameron is a good visual director, with interesting concepts but he couldn't write a script to save his ass. Someone above quoted the "king" as saying that Terminator and Titaic were his babies. Yea right. With lies and bullshit like that he should go to work for Clinton. Terminator was a plagaristic rip off of two of Ellisons stories. That's why Ellisons name now appears on the video editions of T1 and he got allot of money off Cameron in a lawsuit over it. How the hell can Titanic be his baby? It's A REAL FUCKING HISTORICAL EVENT!!!! He didn't create it. He took the event, A night to Remember and his bad dialogue and combined them into a over hyped film. The Abyss was cool. Aliens was Starship Troopers combined with Alien, Strange Days was stupid, Rambo 2 was cool for what it was. The man can't write without stealing from others. Let him direct, but not write. He should direct the next Star Wars film, then Terrence Mallick the third so they have a overrated hack trilogy.

    My $2 (inflation)

    by wizardx

First of all, I really must take issue with whoever said Cameron was a lousy writer... The dialogue in Titanic really could've used a good ScriptDoc, but keep in mind he ALSO wrote T1 and 2, The Abyss, and Aliens, all excellent scripts. I enjoyed True Lies, but I'd probably consider it my least favorite of his movies. (I am NOT counting that Piranha thing) This is a matter of it being an "8" whereas the others are 9, 10, or 11s. =-> And it's the only one Cameron didn't write himself.
I'd be most hyped to see T3. Why? There's only one thing he could do with it, especially considering the various paradoxes left at the end of T2. He couldn't do the time-travel assassination bit AGAIN. It would almost have to be a war movie set after Judgement Day. Think Aliens with robots. Too, too much. (besides, the humans have to have figured out by now that the war can't be won by either side in the past)

    Cameron's scripting success...

    by paddy garcia

How do you follow up the most successful and one of the most honoured films ever? I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. I think what Jim needs to do is pick his next project for himself. People, you want to see Spider-Man, T3, TL2, Apes? What about what he wants to see? Remember... Titanic was a personal project for Cameron - and everyone said he was committing career suicide by tackling a 3hr historical epic with an ending everyone knows. "Who'd pay to see that?" was the common refrain - as it turned out, pretty well everyone.

And let me sound off on his abilities as a script writer. He's good. He's very good. Sure the dialogue in Titanic was frequently a howler. Well, so were parts of T2, TL, The Abyss... every one of his films. What it comes down to, and what people tend to forget, is that script writing isn't just writing 'really great dialogue" - it's structure, character, pacing - everything that makes a film work starts on the printed page. A talented director with a bad script WILL make a bad movie. Cameron's strength as a writer is evident in Titanic - a film that was immensely enjoyable, even though you know the ending.

James Cameron is the greatest action director ever. No not the greatest director ever but he is definitely up there. Despite what the "I hate him because he made Titanic and that movie was popular" people say Cameron (and Titanic) are great. Not matter what he does next it'll be great. End of story.

First up: Pay me back my $6.50 for TITANIC. I hated that Leo worshipping piece of shit. Second: Decide if your gonna have something to do with Spiderman or if you're gonna back the fuck away...COMMIT. *grin* Third: Get back to your big truck, big gun, big robot roots and tell President Clinton to go fuck himself, because you're gonna make eight more Terminator flicks. Fourth: If you can't do those first three things then you are more than welcome to scrub my underwear clean on a daily basis. If you can't do the first three things you're worthless dung and you can blow yourself. End Transmission.

    The Cameron/Ellison connection...

    by prankster

OK...can someone tell me what the other Ellison story Cameron "ripped off" for Terminator was? You're not talking about "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream", are you? Because the connection is dubious. The other story, I know, is "Soldier", and while I haven't seen the Outer Limits segment that supposedly inspired the movie (and which Cameron very jokingly claimed to have "ripped off"...which led to all the trouble) I have read the story, and again, VERY VERY dubious. The only idea "Soldier" has in common with Terminator is the idea of a soldier from a war in the future being sent back through time (by accident, BTW). The 20th century people see this guy talk about the kind of horrific war that he's involved in, and try to put a stop to war in our time. That's about it. "I Have No Mouth..." is a bit closer, it's about a computer that nukes the world and keeps some humans alive to torture. But those had both become SF cliches by the time Cameron created Terminator, and the details are completely different. I mean, if you're going to copyright SF ideas, there's not going to be much left for writers just starting out. If Jules Verne had copyrighted the idea of spaceships, and H. G. Wells the idea of Time Travel, then where would we be today?

    by plasticmonster

By the time all this legal bullshit with T3 is over Arnie will be 60. Let it go. Oh yeah, as an action director Cameron is great, as a writer, he couldn't lick the sweat off Ellison's balls, so he had better rip him off if he can get away with it.

  • YES!!! Ever since I heard TL2 might be made, it's been my Number-One anticipated film for me. I know some people didn't like True Lies, but I LOVED it. It's one of his best. (I'd put Abyss near the (he he) bottom). Even the Jamie Lee dancing scene has a purpose. Kinda of sick, but, see, I think that was Harry's opportunity to make his wife do whatever he wanted. You know, he got his rocks off by it sorta thing. Hell, he dropped the Mini disc player, didn't he? Ok, what he did was a bad idea, but, get this IN REAL LIFE PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES! Anyway, I think T3 is a dumb idea. Basically, it would mean that everything they did in T2 was to no avail. Kinda like what James Cameron said about Alien 3! ('Killing off those characters in the beginning was shitting on the audience after I worked so hard to save them in Aliens') or something. He's right. And if T3 is set in the future... Well, who wants to look at that crappy junk-ass future world for 2 hours? I sure don't! AND PLEASE DON'T SAY THE ARM. A smashed arm stuck in a gear is not gonna re-build Sky-Net, people. Sheesh. Anyway, BRING ON TL2!!! OHOHOHOHOHOH!! That means CHUCK will be back!!!! Excuse me while I change shorts....

    Ken Follet

    by matchstick

If you're talking about the novel written by Ken Follet about Ross Perot employing mercenaries to help rescue a group of his captured employee in the Middle East, it's called "On Wings of Eagles." How do i know? I have a copy sitting in a bookcase right behind me. If you're not talking about Follet's novel, then nevermind. I just wonder why everyone gets so goddamn passionate about a rumor? I mean, it's not like any of you have anything to do with the making and the development of this or any film... Your only job is to A) Pay to see the film, B) See the film and C) Give your opinion of the film. There's nothing wrong with posting your opinion of said film rumor, but c'mon. Get the net! If you're so concerned with these rumors that piss you off so much, move to L.A. and get a job developing. Talk about arm-chair quarterbacking. Besides, Titanic sucked, Cameron is an AVERAGE director, a very technical director, and he is in no way a talented writer. Why then was Titanic so popular? Anyone could have scripted that movie. Can you quote any truly memorable and original dialogue from Craptanic? Probably not. I wouldn't call "Let us out so we can have a chance!" or "I'm the king of the world!!" as original.

Christ allmighty, if Cameron does TL2, a sequel to one of the stupidest, most irritatingly, mind-numbingly wasteful pieces of celluloid ever, then he's truly dropped off the face of the filmmaking world. And for all of you geeks who spew yourself over a romantic piece of claptrap like Titanic you should be ashamed of yourselves. Cameron is obviously no longer the cutting edge, hardcore geek filmmaker of classics like The Abyss and The Terminator. Maybe all that screwing around he's been doing with other people's wives has finally messed up his head. Fuck Cameron!

    Cameron & writing

    by jlinn

Undeveloped characters? That is one of the stand out aspects of "Aliens"! You care just as much if not more for that crew of Marines as you did the bunch from that freighter in "Alien". And in response to all of the people knocking bad dialog, William Goldman said about "Titanic" and it's dialog that it's the least important part of a screenplay. The things that are important one or two other people here have mentioned: story/structure, characters, and pacing. Goldman won a couple of Oscars for writing, so I'll defer to his judgement before any of yours. And I see where he's coming from. You care about the story and what happens to the characters in Cameron films regardless of the sometimes silly crap that spills from their pieholes. And I can't believe all of the "True Lies" bashing! A movie that has some of the greatest action set pieces ever and you guys just do nothing but rip on it for its story I guess, which I thought was pretty good anyway. Oh well, I'm looking forward to TL2 more than any film save Indy 4.

The plot for WITH WINGS AS EAGLES

    by abking

Geekie, the story for WITH WINGS AS EAGLES is about a German soldier named Ostermann (Arnold) who is given orders by Hitlers Nazi High Command to kill over 2000 American POW's. Ostermann (through much change, which is why you have to buy the script to read for yourself) refuses orders and turns against the Third Riech. The story is AMAZING and Cameron should direct at all cost. Randall Wallace of BRAVEHEART wrote it.

  • The dialogue in TITANIC is unforgivable. And sorry, but isn't a good director supposed to draw performances from actors? Is it just me, or is there always one horribly annoying bad actor in all his shitty films? The one that comes to mind is Bill Paxton's in ALIENS... give me a fucking break. It's embarassing.
