All Of Team Whedon’s Hilarious Superhero Musical DR. HORRIBLE Is Online Now!!

Published at:  Jul 19, 2008 2:17:19 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Will Captain Hammer nail the pretty Penny?

Learn for yourself. Now until Sunday.

HERE!!

"Buffy" writers David Fury and Marti Noxon play the newscasters! And Liz Vassey's in there!

The final chapter of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog” must be incredible. Here’s why.

Three AICN Talkbackers, who saw ONLY the first two acts, were less than laudatory.

Talkbacker “phoenixmagi2” said:

Sad really. all you harcore buffy fans can't get over ur gay sing along parties got cancelled.

Talkbacker “SirLoin” said:

Ahh God, this shit is so painful. Once again I really sat down and watched all of this, trying to get what everyone is talking about.

Talkbacker “Lord John Whorfin” said:

Ecchh.. No, that's not right. Bleegggkkkccc. No. Gluurrkkk. Flekktt. Hmm... Uggggkhh. Nope, can't seem to get be able to write the sound I made when I threw up in my mouth watching this. Sweet jesus is this awful.

But. EVERYONE who saw all THREE acts seemed to like "Dr. Horrible" rather a lot!

Variety said:

… High-quality superhero-and-supervillain fun. With a swell soundtrack of original tunes.…

The Hollywood Reporter said:

… packed with Whedon's trademark sarcasm and wit as well as clever commentary on how "society is slipping" and changing the establishment. …

The Los Angeles Times said:

… The audience loved it, and for good reason. … The story, music and acting are all top-notch, and judging by the laughs, oohs and ahs from the audience, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the Web's first major scripted hit. …

E! Online said:

… Not only is the music fiercely catchy, I can also tell you that Felicia sings (and looks) like an angel; Nathan is hilarious and vocally strong; and to the shock of absolutely no one, including the isolated Yanomamo tribe in Brazil, Neil Patrick Harris just kills it. In general, there's a catchy quality to the lyrics (being full, as they are, of funny rhymes and smart metaphors) that is definitely reminiscent of "Once More, With Feeling." …

Salon said:

… utterly brilliant singing, dancing, Web-only action-adventure … Tuneful, hilarious and, in typical Whedon fashion, unabashedly tender, the only thing wrong with Dr. Horrible is that the damn thing isn't a regular series.

    by tonagan

Supposedly this was written during the writers strike, but wasn't it mandated that writers couldn't write anything while the strike was going on? I know that stuff can't really be enforced, and I don't know if something like this is what they were talking about, but it's something that's been on my mind, damn it.

During a writer's strike you can work on any projects dreamed up in your head that you want, you just can't work on anything that's a studio assignment (movie scripts in development, tv shows, etc).

That Was The Gwen Stacy Story In Reverse!!!

    by media messiah

A deep and ruthless ending. It was amazingly more effective than Revenge Of The Sith's depiction of Darth Vader turning evil and the trigger event that pushed him over the edge. Fast, effective, and to the point...ominously so. It reminds one of the Buffy episode "The Body" and the climax of the Spiderman Gwen Stacy story arc...but a reverse take on it, from the villain's perspective. This ending was brutal, sudden, deep, and cruel, much like life. Me, I would have gone for the happy ending...but do you see how people switch to whoever the winner is? Doesn't matter if they are good or evil, the masses root for the winner...a fact that is also deep and cruel.

    The DVD release

    by cymraeg_cowboy

According to the interview with TV Guide's Matt Roush: The ultimate goal: a DVD, at which time perhaps enough profit can be made "to pay the people who were doing us favors," says Whedon. In a chat following my nearly private screening (attended only by Whedon, a few of his New York-based agents and me), Whedon confided, "We're already working on some of the DVD extras, which are going to be the finest in all the land. We're actually going to do, in addition to the commentary, what we refer to as 'commentary with an exclamation point'! A musical commentary that is a completely original musical, that is all commentary songs, and we're writing that now." As I gasped at that audacious notion, he continued: "We're just piling it on. We're like, we're going to make more fun of the idea of extras than anything else." How frackin' sweet is that???

The Shocking Ending Answers The Haters!!!

    by media messiah

The haters expected something lite and fluffy, this was a counter to that, Joss' intentional effort to exhibit his full range, and as a part of that, his ability to shock an audience when they least expect it. This is the equivalent of ending movies like Enchanted, Shrek or Toy Story with a sudden and brutal rape, followed immmediately by a unforeseen murder/suicide.Again...I would have gone for a different twist, something that would have kept the lighter mood...but as I said in my prior posting, this was a ruthless and fast descent into evil, one so surprising and unrepentantly effective, it really made George Lucas' Anakin turns evil and becomes Darth Vader story arc, look like just what it was, a lite weight and amateurish exercise by comparision.

    by blindambition238

Seriously, when (spoiler) Penny bit it, I was waiting for a "haha" bring her back to life silly deus ex machina of some sort. I even thought he was trying to parody his own tendencies. Instead, it sort of just ruined the entire thing for me cause I didn't think, "OMG she died!" as much as "Oh, Whedon's doing his thing, again". Whatever, I still love his work, but just think that his last minute kills are getting a bit contrived. I mean, is there anyone who didn't see the ending to his Astonishing X-Men run coming since issue 1?

    by steve young

Saw this one coming. The first two parts were better than the third, if only because the music was better, the leads were allowed to sing together, and it wasn't so darn obvious what was going to happen. One of these days Whedon is going surprise everyone by introducing a likeable, innocent character that everyone likes and then NOT killing her off. Make no mistake: this is fun, highly geeky musical theater. And for what it is, bravo.

    I think it's interesting that

    by chiahead

that dude said Whedon fans have a brain disease. I kind of think the same thing of those who are not a fan of his work. I feel like anyone who thinks the surface of what he does is the measure of what he does is kind of a moron. "It's never about the demon." as he'd say. I do think that few people who enjoy contemporary entertainment and/or pop culture can truly appreciate the musical theater medium, though and that's a shame. Which might account for their dislike of something that is so clearly well-crafted from beginning to end, as Dr. Horrible. I love musicals but I think opera is just an annoying noise. Does that make opera an annoying noise? No. It just makes me ignorant to its relevance, and its artistry. I think Dr. Horrible, like Once More with Feeling, was a genuine attempt at writing in the genre, and telling a compelling story within it, not like most failed attempts which simply point at the joke of "we're in a musical yay". So for that, team Whedon should be congratulated. Although, I did think that Captain Hammer finishing his high note after being unfrozen was totally pandering. And Whedon's counterpoint in general could be earned a little bit more. Or could at least stand to surprise me musically in the same way as his solo work does. I was also a little sad that the punchline to Bad Horse was literally just a horse in an office. But even so, stuff like finally seeing the Evil League of Evil- it's totally set dressing. Anyone who's using that as a measure of the story's quality is kind of barking up the wrong tree, I think. At its core it's a story about a dude who is perpetually getting in his own way to the point of genuine tragedy. And by genuine, I mean TEXTBOOK tragedy. (Read your Aristotle. I know Whedon has.)At the end of the day, I think team Whedon accomplished in three mini-video blog webisodes what George Lucas failed miserably at in the Star Wars prequels. I'm kind of surprised no one's brought this up yet. Is not Dr. Horrible in the exact same position as Anakin Skywalker? He means well, he disagrees with the establishment. He loves to the point of blindness. He causes his own suffering and downward spiral because of his inability to let go. And ultimately, he feels nothing. Like, seriously? I think it's a genuine shame if you can't see how elegantly crafted this story telling is. You're totally missing out. And if my getting it and appreciating it means I have a brain disease, call me Cancer Stanley.

blindambition238 i respectfully disagree with you

    by chiahead

while i do think killing off heroes is something I'd like to see Whedon do less of, I think, per my diatribe above, it's the ONLY way this could have ended. Penny's death is an inevitable conclusion to what starts out as unlimited possibility. Dude is misunderstood, thinks he's evil but clearly isn't cemented in evil just yet. Even says he won't fight Johnny Snow because there are kids in the park. When he is told he has to kill someone to get what he wants (i.e., acceptance into the league) he is not even comfortable with it. It's only after Hammer says he's going to bone Penny ("the hammer is my penis." probably the greatest line in the whole thing) that Horrible starts to cross over. And who introduced them in the first place? So with those balls in play you have a guy who has tragically led himself down an ally where SOMEONE has to die in order for him to get what he wants. Conventional storytelling tells us the bad guy can't win- but in this story it's intentionally oblique which of these two nemeses is the bad guy. Sort of. Penny's death makes the story go from being a standard hero versus anti hero to a "be careful what you wish for" story. I don't think it's a kill for the sake of killing.

    Cheap and fun.

    by mockingbuddha

There's a philosophy or aesthetics called intentionalism which says a work of art should be judged based on who the author is and what their intentions were. It is pretty much the whipping boy of the aesthetics field. It's a flawed theory as art has to be judged on its own merits to have any value. Otherwise it's just some cult of personality crap, which seems to be where America wants to be right now, basing their entertainment on cheap celebrity rather than the actual art being produced. I watched this because I have enjoyed some of Joss's work before, but I wasn't thinking about the death of Wash when I watched Penny die. I thought this was fun and it kind of came at me out of the blue, so that was cool, getting some entertainment for once without two years of anticipation. Dr. H owes a lot to The Venture Bros, but if you're going to steal, steal from the best. One thing I have a problem with in most of Whedon's work is that I never like the casting for his leads. Buffy, Angel, and Mal were my least favorite characters in each of those shows. Joss beat that curse for me here because NPH was awesome, and Nathan Fillion was hilarious in this, which to me, shows he was always miscast as a leading man. I actually didn't like Penny very much, I was actually much more worried that Capt. Hammer would die so... bring on some more of this.

So right. Whedon is fantastic and all, but the guy does have a tendency to murder anyone who so much as thinks they could be happy, especially the ladies. Like Jenny, Angel, Tara, Cordy, Fred, Wash, Book, Anya, and now Penny. Oh, and Buffy a bunch of times. He mostly seems to think that chicks should die and guys should carry around their suffering, except in Serenity, where he reverses it. He even revives guys who die (Angel, Spike) so that they can go on moping.

Why Are Heroes' Female Love Interests Being Killed Off???

    by media messiah

Take the new Batman for instance...it seems to be the new in thing to kill off the female love interests of heroes in movies??? But as I told my girlfriend, it would have been a smarter twist to have Rachael betray Bruce Wayne and become Joker's love interest Harlequin. What a wasted opportunity???

I wish I could hate you to death. This is the first time I've felt genuine hatred on the internet towards someone. Fuck you! (although I expected that twist to happen, but still. I hope you die alone and miserable.)

Media that is a horrible idea that wouldn't work

    by stormwatcher

Just like Robin wouldn't. And sadly, he didn't ruin it, Harvey Dent did when he had an interview like 3 weeks ago and let it slip and it got posted around the net.

    by gregoryharbin

You should be avoiding the Internet right now. Seriously, you should expect to find Dark Knight spoilers everywhere, especially at AICN.

    by dangerousapple

Media Messiah: you son of a ....BITCH! I mean - why? I have been anticipating The Dark Knight for over A YEAR now. and now that I finally, FINALLY get to see it in theaters in Holland in SIX DAYS - you throw a fucking spoiler at me. And GregoryHarbin, I'm visiting a totally unrelated talkback to dr. Horrible. I SHOULD NOT have tot expect Dark Knight spoilers here.

    Media Messiah is an asshole.

    by dangerousapple

And this is coming from someone who normally frowns on name callign via the internet. But I'm right there with 11dayempire, quadfather09 and David Cloverfield - I wish you bad things. Not only is throwing around spoilers like that for a movie that is a mere DAYS out in the US hurtfull - it was totally unnessary for you to make your point.

I Didn't Out What Happened Or Spoiler It

    by media messiah

Neil Adams spoiled it on Coast to Coast Live last night, as well, one of the other posters mentioned the death which alerted me to it. I was simply commenting on what the other poster wrote.

    Dr Horrible

    by laughing irishman

    Holy Guilty Pleasure.

That was the best damned thing I've seen in a long time. But, I'm a sucker for musicals. NPH is the best.

    Joss does it again

    by oisin5199

fun, funny, poignant, a succinct, smart entry in the superhero genre and the musical genre - though it's saying more about the former than the latter. But the superhero musical genre, look out! Take note, Julie Taymour. The Spider-Man musical can only learn from this. I always thought Vai the vampire slayer was annoying, but now I'm crushing on Felicia Day big time.

    RE Memdia Messiah

    by dangerousapple

" I Didn't Out What Happened Or Spoiler It " Yes you did, and you know it. "Neil Adams" you say? Who the fuck is that? Do you get it in your US-centered brain that there are other people in the world looking forward to The Dark Knight, who don´t watch and or even get "Neil Adams" where they live? And which other poster outright mentioned it? GregoryHarbin, mentioned something that in retrospect... but he was carefull enough to not flat-out spoil it, as you did.

    by knifey spoony

If I hadn't seen it already I'd be incredibly pissed at you - plus your idea about Rachel becoming the Joker's lover is just purely retarded. With an idea like that its like you've been watching a different film. But to get back on topic, Dr Horrible was highly enjoyable for me. Love live Joss - he is one of our great modern writers of film and TV. And yes, Messiah, you suck.

    Babies!!!

    by media messiah

Neal Adams was behind many Batman comic books and appeared on Coast To Coast Live Saturday night...a radio show that is heard world wide. Much of his interview spoiled the new Batman movie in massive ways. And like it or not, America is the center of the world and has kept your European asses out of the frying pan for years!!! You have a car, we invented it. You ride on a plane, we invented it!!! You have electricity, we invented its industrialized and consumer use. You have a refrigerator, we invented it. You have a telephone, we invented it. You have a personal computer, we invented it. And you are attacking me on the internet, which we also invented. The name of this planet isn't the Earth, it's America!!! You don't like the American government, well, neither do I...but your governments are doing all they can to keep this messed up American government in power so we can fight your wars for you as your proxy army!!! You invented that...which means your governments are that much worse!!!

    RE: Media Messiah

    by dangerousapple

Media Messiah, an apology would have been nice. Instead you continue to act like an asshole, reinforcing that you are one. And yes, that is the GregoryHarbin quote I was referencing aswell - from that comment I did not deduct the thing you flat-out spoiled.

So "Coast To Coast Live Saturday night" is heard world wide - so what? Do you think that automatically means the whole world actually heard it?? The way I see it, Neal Adams is a jerk for spoiling it there (unless there were spoiler warnings - which you did not give) and you are a jerk for spoiling it here. And what the fuck are you one about with that "America is the center of the world" bullfuck?? Over half the inventions you mention (the car, refigerator, 'industrialized and consumer use' of electricity) are european in origin. "so we can fight your wars for you as your proxy army!!!" - yeah right, like America isn't dependent on the rest of the world in it's war on terror. You Sir, are a tool.
