A look at THE ROAD TO EL DORADO... the next Dreamworks feature animated film

Published at:  Jun 08, 1999 10:06:24 PM CDT

First up, this film is alleged to be more lighthearted and all around funner (yes I know that's not a word) than THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. It's set in the Yucatan in the Mayan empire of old. Those looks at the film are... frankly... gorgeous. However here, this is a piece of art designed for the Licensee conference and fixates on the happiest most completely insane version of the characters. I've seen some scenes with these two where they ain't so happy... and some incredibly intense stuff is happening. I was kinda hoping they were going to use the image of that Spanish Galleon that they have created. It's amazing. BUT... We'll have to wait and see more from this. You've seen a few bits before... do a search for El Dorado, and you'll find it. Thanks again to El Lurio! Great job!

    A Dreamworks/Disney Rant

    by jalora

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is going to be another rip-off of the Disney formula we all know and used to love but are now sick of?

Dreamworks managed to suck all the life out of the Exodus story (absolutley one of the greatest stories ever told) and turn it into non-offensive mainstream mush. It looked beautiful, but didn't break any new ground. I can't imagine this film going anywhere experimental.

The recent crop of Disney films have been pretty horrendous as well, and I hope Tarzan really bombs. I mean, they cast Rosie O'fucking-Donell? And Phil Collins is doing the tunes (I wanted Paul Simon, dammit; he's got the African stuff down cold)? I'll pass, thank you.

I am hereby calling for the return of Walt Disney. Disney execs, we all know about the cryogenic vault you keep Uncle Walt in. We need him thawed out and put back to work. This man made great films: "Snow White", "Fantasia", "Bambi", and my personal favorite, "Pinnochio". "Mulan", "Hunchback of Notre Dame", or even "The Little Mermaid" can't hold a candle to any of Walt's stuff.

What was I talking about? Oh, yeah, "The Road to El Dorado". Looks like a couple of schmucks. Where the hell is "Iron Giant"?

    poe breaking ground

    by tv`snick

it did break ground. it was the first financially successful animated movie with disturbing violence. the scene where the firstborn die just freaked me the Hell out. and dreamworks is the the best for, in a kiddie movie, having a large animated ant say "quit bitching". dreamworks animation kills. tarzan looks good too, tho. nice 'n' violent. still, why did princess monoke have to get pushed back to halloween... =(

    breaking ground

    by bud

Yep, ole Katz is really breaking some new ground here. He helped create the Disney formula you guys so often gripe about, there's no way he's ever going to give you what you want. He couldn't decide on the tone of POE, Antz was a rushed mess, and this one looks no better (they do look like characters from POE ).

    Double standard

    by sketchy

Before I lambaste those pics and other pics from El Dorado that I've seen on the web, I wanted to just say that if those pics were for a Disney movie, everyone would have torn them to shreds. People just love to hate Disney. No matter what they do people look for ways to critisize them; but with other companies, if they present something as crappy looking as those El Dorado pics or that art for Osmosis Jones, people look for anyway to justify them, saying that they are breaking ground and are out on the edge with a new style.

Anyway, with that rant out of my system let me move on to some thoughts on El Dorado. Everything I've seen from this movie looks like stills taken from a video game. The character designs are incredibly unapealing. I could go on for pages as to why those character designs make me want to projectile vomit, but I think they speak for themselves. Also the gestures of the characters look very stiff and unnatural which boggles my mind because I know that there are many talented ex-Disney animators working on the film.

The expression on those two guys faces is absurd. They have this expression like they just sucked down a tank of nitrous. The guy pointing his finger in the air is also just a cartoon cliche, something you see a lot of in afternoon cartoons. But nobody in the real world ever does anything like. The actions of the characters are extraordinarily bland and could have been pushed much further. The drawings show no knowledge of anatomy. The two male characters have these gargantuan rib cages which taper down into female like waists.

The backgrounds are well done in their own right, some of them up to the quality of Tarzan backgrounds, but if you are going to have absurdly cartoony character designs, you can't have super realistic, highly detailed backgrounds. The ornate backgrounds don't really fall into the background, but instead fight for space with the characters on the screen. This factor is also one of my gripes with all of Don Bluth's movies. If you look at any still frame from any of his movies, there's about a thousand colors all clashing with each other, and not allowing the eye to focus on any one area. El Dorado seems to have the same problems.

    yuck!

    by jccalhoun

The guy who mentioned Don Bluth is right. The pic does sort of look like Don BLuth. I hate Don BLuth's animation! But even more than that the pic looks like teh covers of those cheap rip off if Disney movies. You know the one's that Wal-Mart always has. "Princess Mulan" "Aladin's Lamp" "The New Adventures of Pocohontus". Has anyone ever bought any of those cheap rip offs? I always wanted to just to see if the animation was as bad as teh box cover. Maybe I'll just wait untill El Diablo comes out!

Dreamworks has a great free lunch

    by fear of a ted

I sneak over there from Disney Imagineering and eat a delicious free meal. Then I walk the halls--the concept art looks awesome, and the character designs are pushed pretty damn well. Unfortuntely, execs say things to the character designers like "lets make him 5% Reggae and throw in 15% Latino." It's a wierd process. Katzenburg has a tendency to take a movie from the AFI's top 100, change the characters to animals, and throw in a ton of sub-plots. Example: They are thinking of 'Three Men and a little Baby', except it is with KANGAROOS and it is DARK and EDGY. What the fuck? Goddamnit, I'm going to lose my job with the Rat because he won that lawsuit against Eisner. Who is going take the $500 million dollar hit in the wallet? Eisner? Nah, it'll be me and the rest of the artists at Disney. Enough of my rant.

Does anyone know if Richard Simmons is doing a voice for either one of those guys? I can't think of a better fit.

Maybe the telletubbies can make a cameo appearance, and they can all have a big orgie.

    by godbear

Hey don't associate something which has coolness built into it do to its sheer freakiness and surreal nature (such as the Teletubbies) with Ace and Gary up there. Do these guys wander into the mysterious map while shopping for the perfect friendship bracelet or what?

    Does it really matter?

    by astal

First off, this one picture is not enough to judge an entire film. However, Dreamworks' animated movies have been very disappointing thus far. Antz was a big rip-off of A Bug's Life (there is proof for those of you who think it was the other way around). Plus it was not particularly funny or memorable. It just was. Prince of Egypt, while not a bad film, was a wasted opportunity. It was visually stunning but the characters were all just passive observers to what was going on. There was no reason to care about them. Add that to the fact that the entire premise of the story was false (Moses and Ramses were never brothers) and you get a cool-lloking yet, ultimately, forgettable film. My point? When Dreamworks was first started, I thought it would release some great imaginitive work. Unfortunatley, they have been too worried about getting into a pissing contest with Disney, and the films show it. If they merely concentrated on a film with a good story and strove to make it the best possible instead of worrying how much it will dent Disney's market share, then the audience would really have something to get excited over. Until then, it's just going to be tit-for-tat.
On a last note, to Fear of a Ted, if you really work for Disney Imagineering, I would love to talk to you. As an aspiring Imagineer, I'm very interested in what you have to say. E-mail me at Astal06@aol.com. I would really appreciate it. Thanx!

The image of the title is lightyears better looking than those two humps. God, I'm so not excited about this new project from Don Bluth, I uh mean Dreamworks. I DO have interest in Titan A.E. even though it's from Bluth. At least the concept is intriguing. This just bores me reading the synopsis.

COME ON HARRY!!!! THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!

    by 69 camaro 454

Hey Harry, what are you going to do next? Rip labels off of Flinstone vitamins and claim it has something to do with the series ? This is some scribble the promotional people whipped up. Neither James nor I ever approved this artwork and you posting it like it has anything to do with the film is pretty silly. Please let us know when you intent to post our security guards drawn interpretations of the characters. It is just a prototypal of the final product. We all laughed just as hard as you when we saw it.
