How's a Darren Aronofsky-Directed ROBOCOP Sequel Sound?

Published at:  Jul 17, 2008 9:09:28 PM CDT

Beaks here...

If Bloody-Disgusting is correct, and Darren Aronofsky's "rebuild" of ROBOCOP is actually a sequel set twenty years "after the termination of the Robocop program", then forget all that whinging over the sacredness of Paul Verhoeven's original. If ROBOCOP 3 couldn't tarnish that fucker, nothin' can.

Though it's a little disappointing that they've (allegedly) opted to move the series from Detroit to Los Angeles (especially when it'd be incredibly affordable to shoot in the actual confines of the Motor City nowadays), I'm cool with anything that allows Aronofsky to put his own stamp on the established mythology of the character (and let's pretend that this "established mythology" begins and ends with the first movie, okay?). According to Bloody Disgusting, talks between MGM and the director are fairly advanced. Perhaps Sony will have an announcement ready for their Saturday panel at Comic Con.

Miller barely wrote Robocop 2 and 3

    by funketeer

Most of what he wrote didn't make it to the screen. The experience is what swore him off Hollywood until Rodriguez was able to get him to do Sin City. What most fanboys REALLY ignore is that Robocop 2 was directed by Irvin Kershner, the man credited with the creative success of The Empire Strikes Back. Funny how he gets a pass while people will look for any chance to dump on Miller.

This project will greatly benefit both parties. It will give Arronofsky a chance to showcase his talent and creativity, and to revitalize his career... which needs a bit of a boost after the Fountain. And it will give a much needed new direction to the Robocop franchise, and probably result in a better film for the series than any that have come before.

    Get Weller back!!!

    by photoboy

I hope they can convince Weller to don the suit again, if this is a sequel set 20 years later then the ageing won't be a problem.

The film needs the dark satire, the over-the-top gore and the lawless streets of Detroit (now Delta City?). But most of all it needs to remember that the core of the story was always the tragic story of Murphy and his isolated life if that suit.

Aside from the one scene in Robocop 2 where Murphy interacts with his wife none of the sequels have managed to "get" the tragedy of Murphy's situation (although I thought the oft-derided TV series did a fantastic job with this aspect). I hope this film can remember that. (And by TV series I don't mean that fucking awful Prime Directives mini-series).

I don't like the sound of moving it to LA, but I do like the idea of an older Robocop, and seeing how the years of isolation have treated him.

It's just a pity they can't hire Basil Poledouris. I hope they acquire the rights to do a Superman Returns-esque score which reuses all of Poledouris themes.

    by ironic_name

    Robo Reboot, Batman Reboot

    by caerdwyn

I've heard Miller penned Robo 2 and 3. I've also heard his scripts were chopped up to hell and back and it turned him cold toward Hollywood for years, so yeah, let's not dwell on Miller and Robocop. Let's also remember that compared to Robo 3, Robo 2 is a masterpiece, so we shouldn't rag on Kershner too hard. Poor Robo has had a troubled past and any form of reboot/sequel needs to be PERFECT. Given the track record of one great flick, one mediocre, and one downright disgusting, a reboot is... well... hmm, it worked for Batman. Nolan has mopped up Schumacher's mess right nicely. Don't reboot, but a slick "20 years later" sequel could revive the franchise, if only for one flick.

    by rbatty024

I wonder if he has the ability to work within a large studio environment. All of his films have been pretty small up to now, even The Fountain with all of its special effects wasn't a blockbuster.

One thing about ED209 and Robocain

    by successor

I really like the first Robocop and the second is all right. But one thing always bothered me. Why give ED209, the first failed Robocop 2 prototype and Robocain live ammo for an ordinary demonstration? Isn't that just asking for trouble? I know, I know, the scenes wouldn't be cool if they couldn't shoot people to pieces. But what company in their right mind would load these things with real bullets? It would be like loading a tank with live shells for a military expo. Think of all the lawsuits people would bring in real life. Of course this is a movie, so who gives a shit, right?

Bloody Disgusting has NO source at all on their website for this article. This could be just plain bullshit to bring hits to their website. I remember Dark Horizons had this really awesome summery for the what was supposed to be "Pink Panther 10," back when it wasn't none if the next Panther film was going to be a prequel/sequel/remake. What happened? A streaming pile of shit remake with Steve Martin and Beyonce. That's what. I'm not staying calm till I see something OFFICIAL from MGM that this is indeed a sequel rather than a remake. I hope BD is right though.

    A sequel is fine...

    by fassbinder79

But in my opinion it should have been shot in Detroit. A big film shoot there could have really helped their economy. I also think that LA is overused. And Aronofsky has a lot of work to do to regain my respect after the train wreck that was The Fountain. He needs to take a cue from Chris Nolan. If you're reading this Aronofsky...Watch Dark Knight as many times as possible. Learn from it.

    Bottom Line

    by fassbinder79

Verhoeven's film is a masterpiece. Nothing Aronofsky could do to top it. Especially if he's shooting it in LA. But he could pull off doing a really good sequel. But The Fountain was terrible so I don't know. If this had been his follow up to Requiem then maybe I would be excited. But after The Fountain I am hesitant to put faith in anything Aronofsky does from here on out. But in all fairness a sequel isn't inappropriate...Just not a remake of the first one. That would be blasphemy.

    L.A. Makes a Hideous Backdrop

    by _maltheus_

Whenever a movie or television show decides to relocate back to L.A., it never seems as good to me. Judging by what I see on the screen, L.A. has got to be the ugliest place on the planet (or they don't ever film the nice parts). It doesn't even have the character of a shithole. It's just a sprawling mess of an overused location. Either way, I don't think this will be made. And it would have to be getting a shitload of positive buzz before I'd even consider seeing it. Robocop worked for me as a kid, not so much anymore. Except of course, the "bitches leave" line.

Sequel, yes! But Mr. Weller? Fantastic idea, but aging *might* be a problem, as Murphy's RC "face" was apparently some sort of plasticised replacement, not his own face, so technically it wouldn't age. This may come as a shock, but I understood the story just fine, and *gasp*! hated it anyway.

The Fountain actually made me angry, it offended me on a deep level, and I'm a huge sci fi nerd. I pray for good, intelligent, high production value sci fi stories, and that's why the Fountain was such a knife to the eye.
It was a joyless, pseudo-abstract wank fest with very little care put into actually telling the goddamn story (which wasn't that complicated, just poorly rendered), with simple structure sacrificed on the wankerish altar of half-baked artsy shit. I love arty films, if done well, but this one reeked of inauthenticity, a hollywood director watching true artistic film and between blasting rails saying "It can't be that hard, I could do that shit. snort!" It was a FAILURE as a film, a failure as a two-hour piece of entertainment, a waste of talent and effects budget, and a multi-million dollar, incomprehensible love letter from Darren Aronofsky, to Darren Aronofsky.

Fuck the Fountain, fuck it in its cheap tawdry ass.
