Herc Declares The New GONG SHOW Dreadful – And Implores America To Watch It Tonight For Triumph The Insult-Comic Dog!!
I am – Hercules!!
Comedy Central’s new “Gong Show” is mostly tedious, a creatively unhygienic hybrid mixing the DNA of the insipid “America’s Got Talent” with a watered-down attempt to rip-off "The Howard Stern Show."
And Triumph The Insult-Comic Dog (voice and hands of longtime “SNL”/“Conan O’Brien” writer Robert Smigel) seems to know he’s landed in the middle of a basic-cable abomination.
Triumph, one the three judges in the premiere episode, mostly squats in silence before the show’s parade of appalling performances, but hits the comedy bulls-eye almost every time he opens his cigar-chewing yap.
The incisively acerbic puppet-hound makes great sport of the show, the acts and fellow judges Brian Posehn (“The Sarah Silverman Program”) and Steve Schirripa (“The Sopranos”).
The bad news is I don’t think “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” screenwriter Smigel contributes to any subsequent “Gong” episodes, and just lends Triumph to the premiere as a favor to Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, which produces the series.
The worse news is the show’s awkward and maladroit new host, comedian Dave Attell (“Insomniac”), somehow manages to be stiffer and less engaging than original host Chuck Barris. And Attell will be back every week.
Comedy Central pairs “Gong” this summer with “Reality Bites Back,” which pits 10 f-list comedians against each other in unscripted competitions. The comics include memorably unfunny “MTV Road Rules” vet Theo Vonkurnatowski, who appears this week at the Baton Rouge Funnybone before moving on to a five-night stand at the Tampa Improv and a four-night stint at the Atlanta Funny Farm. In Foxworthy country, Vonkurnatowski’s a working comic.
The first 10 minutes of “Reality Bites Back”:
“The Gong Show”: 10 p.m. Thursday. Comedy Central.
“Reality Bites Back”: 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Comedy Central.

I can believe that, I also remember seeing a bearded Andy Dick in the promos, not good...
-
Yeah, remakes aren't as good as they used to be. You know, before they were remade.
-
Bring back insomniac, with a new comedian or something. That show was great. Hopefully Herc is wrong, I mean he doesn't enjoy family guy, so he doesn't enjoy things that are funny. But comedy central has had only three good shows in the last ten years. South Park/Reno 911/Sarah Silverman and the ass pennies sketch from Upright Citizens (the rest sucked), and about 10-15 sketches on Chapelle show. And I guess if you can't wait for SNL then they have those (2) shows to tide you over, but those aren't funny.
-
And the Ain't It Cool News TV show was great as well. Did anyone see that? Thats crazy.
-
and I'm actually not joking. evidently video leaked of Andy Dick waving his penis around on the new gong show leaked. the footage leaked, I mean. ba dum bum!

dave attell returned from the abyss to herald the end times
-
herc, have you ever watched the original episodes?? barris was brilliant...best host ever, and the father of the type of tv you love to pimp...and of course this show sucks...it doesnt have barris, gene gene the dancing machine, porn star announcers, underaged girls sucking on lollypops or jaye p morgan showing her boobs in every other shot...and american idol, americas got talent, and every talent show to follow it, has stolen from it...and as for andy dick...god, at least we know he isnt gay
-
read the fucking credits...all these shows have writers...who do more than just write for the announcer
-
Abd that's different than any other Hercules article how?Just joking, smiley faced emticon. I kid Herc because of, you know, his deplorable taste.
-
More rip-offs, Robin. Even a remake of a show that aired while I was in high school rips me off.
-
Hopefully all that TV watching and internet exposure hasn't soured the poor kid.
-
Will try to have a running PBP of them as best I can.
-
equals me watching the pilot episode at least. I love Attell's stand up so hopefully he carries over some of that 'tude to the show. As for A. Dick, its business as usual. He can do whatever he wants: the universe owes him for cancelling his MTV show...
-
Curb, Entourage, Office, 30 Rock, 2.5 Men
-
Larry David...he must have more incriminating photos of Emmy voters than David E. Kelley for his POS show to keep getting circle-jerked by the Academy.
-
Tony Shalhoub, Monk; Steve Carell, The Office, Lee Pace, Pushing Daisies; Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock; Charlie Sheen, 2.5 Men
-
James Spader, Boston Legal; Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad; Michael C. Hall, Dexter; Hugh Laurie, House; Gabriel Byrne, in Treatment; Jon Hamm, Mad Men
-
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, New Adventures of Old Christine; Christina Applegate, Samantha Who? Tina Fey, 30 Rock; America Ferrara, Ugly Betty; Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
-
For Six of One, that is.

kinda like saying the sun rises every morning? seems pretty much like a certainty.
-
was watching Barris's gradual disintegration. The first few episodes, he was pretty straight-laced and stiff and wore a tux. By the last season, he was completley out of control, his tuxedo disheveled, wearing a wierd hat down over his eyes.
-
I loved the original and this show appears to have nothing to do with the Howard Stern show (which I love by the way).
-
How could you complain about that, and then not even blink at Entourage being nominated?
-
...so if Herc hated that, then I expect to at least want to check them all out. Herc, upon watching a segement from America's Got Talent on YouTube a few weeks ago, I actually think you got it reversed, AGT stole the concept from The Gong Show a tweaked it a little.
-
I agree with the sentiments that Chuck Barris was anything, but stiff and unenganging. Barris knew what he had was grade A kitsch and played it to the hilt. It was part of the original's charm.
Dave Atell is a great comedian, but totally wrong for the role as host of the Gong Show. Could you see Atell dancing around on stage with Gene Gene the Dancing Machine?

Michael Ian Black is the shit!!!!

-
And I did back in 1977. I got more gongs than the break-dancing robot that caught on fire. -
at least it had Ween

Wow, that's hilarious. Hmm? What's that? This isn't 1994? Oh, shit... well, nevermind then.

HBO 85; ABC 76; CBS 51; NBC 50; PBS 33; Fox 28; AMC 20; Sci-Fi 15; Bravo, FX 11; TNT 10; A&E 9; Comedy Central 8; Disney, Discovery 6; USA Network, History 4; Cartoon Network 3; The CW, Nickelodeon 2; Starz, ESPN, TLC, Animal Planet, Biography, Lifetime, MTV 1
I think it's in the Emmys' contract that HBO needs to get the most circle-jerking every year. *rolls eyes* -
The guy just had a good TV presence. He always smiled and had a twinkle in his eye that an old 1970s Electrolux TV could still pick up.
As for his 'degrading into hats', his 'nook' on stage left ALWAYS had a hat rack full of goodball hats, and he would go all Charlie Chaplan in them if a taping was going bad and needed some extra goodball. I suspect that much of the time, he was on something. The guy just totally seemed to be stoned.Gene Gene the Dancing Machine was just an amazing staple of the show, and the Unknown Comic - its just not the Gong Show without him.
What really made the show work was the combination of Barris and the celeb judges. I think that bald tall freaky guy (dont know his name but he shows up in commercials CONSTANTLY doing his 'creepy nerd guy' gimmick. He's perfect for the show. Attel? He has that same Chuck Barris persona going on, and I think he can pull this off. But Adam Carolla? Andy Dick? Looks like Attell is just handing out paychecks to his rat pack instead of taking the job seriously. You just KNOW that he and Adam are telling each other "what the hell man, its good for at least four paychecks, am I right?" during each taping. -
goodball = goofball. Teaches me to dabble in keyboard remapping and then hitting up some talkbacks before Im done.
Why is this site so cheap and amateur after all this time? -
and hired Sam Rockwell to do his Chuck Barris as host.
-
It's the fuckin' GONG SHOW and it's hosted by the funniest stand up comic working today, DAVE ATTELL.
This show will be hilarious. -
Drunken losers, dwarves with limps/ Flo's and ho's and one-eyed pimps/ Down the alleyway they creep/ They're all your friends when you can't sleep-------Come with me and you will see/ A late-night freakshow...JUBILEE/ Kick the sandman in his sac/ Stay up late...INSOMNIAC!! HaHa

was one of the 10 finalists on "Last Comic Standing" last year.
Theo was on LCS as well, but didn't pass the regional tryouts. -
Michael Ian "smug unfunny douche" Black

The episode with Triumph will apparently be shown on the 24th.

They probably could have made a halfway decent new Gong Show, but they seem to have a crew of people who keep making the same type of show. The show where they throw a bunch of comedians in there, have a needlessly loud and constantly screaming collection of retards in a live audience that the talent is forced to pander to at the expense of the viewing audience, a hideously IN YOUR FACE set, and horrible generic rock constantly blaring. When did royalty free rock become a standard for identifying funny? Didn't they already do this show with Colin Quinn and with Lewis Black and a half dozen other times with people we've already forgotten? All of these shows seem to be at least a decade out of touch with our culture on virtually every level of style and substance, and they all seem to be designed by the same uncreative people who brought you the last comedy central failure. Hey, lets find a handful of comics at the last minute and explain to them that they're going to be thrown into the least funny environment in the world with no warning as some sort of test of their talent. I watched the entire show and the only thing I found funny was when Attell did the "ready, set, cancelled" joke after Andy Dick stick his cock through a hole in his card. Humor usually comes from truth.
