Hercules, Not Altogether Unpredictably, Laughs Very Hard At The Middle Part Of Joss Whedon’s Superhero Tuner DR. HORRIBLE!!
I am – Hercules!!
I was going to wait to post until the finale airs on Saturday, but this made me laugh so hard so many times I felt compelled to share it immediately.
Not only is the middle act of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog" even more hilarious than the first, it concludes with great excitement, as rock & roll gives voice to Doogie's roiling hatred.
Also? Trick photography!
Forgive me my obsessive and very gay Whedon love and just … watch …
(And remember that all three acts are no longer free after Sunday.)
Numerous members of the press saw the whole shebang last week.
Variety says:
… High-quality superhero-and-supervillain fun. With a swell soundtrack of original tunes.…
The Hollywood Reporter says:
… packed with Whedon's trademark sarcasm and wit as well as clever commentary on how "society is slipping" and changing the establishment. …
The Los Angeles Times says:
… The audience loved it, and for good reason. … The story, music and acting are all top-notch, and judging by the laughs, oohs and ahs from the audience, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the Web's first major scripted hit. …
E! Online says:
… Not only is the music fiercely catchy, I can also tell you that Felicia sings (and looks) like an angel; Nathan is hilarious and vocally strong; and to the shock of absolutely no one, including the isolated Yanomamo tribe in Brazil, Neil Patrick Harris just kills it. In general, there's a catchy quality to the lyrics (being full, as they are, of funny rhymes and smart metaphors) that is definitely reminiscent of "Once More, With Feeling." …

Before this servers bite the dust this time, you think? Act 2 is amazing! Watched it three times and can't get those songs out of my head! Curse you Whedons and your catchy tunes!
-
...my penis.
-
And so the world turns.
-
Seems the tech problems are solved... watched the second one without a hickup... VERY NICE JW!!!!!
-
which makes this video even funnier for its overlapping musical parodies. This needs to be made into a real musical.
-
Once again I really sat down and watched all of this, trying to get what everyone is talking about. It's still akin to the dude in high school who cracked jokes in class that nobody laughed at, but he looks around the room with a self-satisfied smirk like he just killed the room.
Here, Whedon fans, are some links to things that are actually funny. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO7D07_fJpo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-ZNX1jqbOk, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpUSElgJcyI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YphEUa5LPjM -
Cracks my shit up.
-
has high school issues.
-
very glad to see that no one is bitching like on the other blogsites that ive seen post about DR. HORRIBLE
-
Humour is subjective. You don't get it, you don't like it; fine. Suck it up and stop acting like you're better than those who like the show.
-
I know where the jokes are. "The hammer is my penis." "You're stabbing a fork into your leg." "So I am." I am not trying to be a dickhead just to flame the board. If anything, I'm jealous that I don't enjoy it and that so many people do - and with a passion. The last time I commented, I just got hate mail but with no cogent, articulate defense of the material. And don't defend it on account of me, just tell me to fuck off. But I'd like to hear about someone who really likes it that wants to chime in on why. Whedon's stuff is paint-by-numbers humor, it's like the laughs are laid out ahead of time. I'll give this one thing - the songs are great. There, I said something good about Whedon-verse or whatever.
-
...I meant Gandhi.
-
Did pm1 get banned on a sing-a-long tb perchance?
-
We must pity him, for his ass indeed is clenched real tight.
-
The songs got even better this round. I can't wait for part 3!!!
-
My ass is wide open, baby. Please insert actual humor.
-
The thing about humor is, if it doesn't tickle your funny bone, no amount of explaining will make you "get it." If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.
I think where you raise ire is with comments like "the guy in high school cracking jokes that nobody laughs at." The reality is, *lots* of people are laughing at it. You're just not one of them. You may not intend it this way, but it comes off just a little narcissistic (i.e., if you're not laughing, nobody is).
Now, then, for the cogent and articulate "defense of the material." I tend to like Whedon's humor because:
A) The jokes are inherent to the characters. That is, they frequently advance character *while* being funny, rather than just being random jokes. (Example: When Moist says, "I had a double date with Bait and Switch. I kinda thought I was supposed to end up with Bait, but..." It's not just a funny setup [which, incidentally, doesn't need to feed us the payoff], it also reveals something to us about Moist himself. He's kind of a sap, easily manipulated, and fairly passive about being had. It's a lot of information packed into one little joke.) Whedon does this a *lot*, and I appreciate that sort of writing.
B) The "jokes" often imbue the characters with a ponderous innocence. Whedon does this with both heroes and villains, and it's a personal preference, but I like to see those little holes punched in archetypical characters (which are the sort that Whedon usually works with). It creates the effect that they don't realize they're functioning elements of an ongoing narrative. In other words, they ponder inconsequential things aloud, and that's something most television and movie characters don't generally do. The juxtaposition makes me laugh, because I recognize those sort of oddball tangents in my own internal monologues every day. ("That smells like cumin...")
So, those are two reasons that I, personally, appreciate Whedon's humor. It ain't for everyone, obviously, but it sure makes me laugh.

...but I thought Part 2 was vintage Whedon, and really well written and performed. Inspired, really. Funny and interesting, and the songs are perfectly interwoven into the story, and create genuine emotional investment. Liked it, looking forward to the end.
-
I guess kinda. I mean yeah they have the lab coat, evil goggles, and are trying to take over the world, but then again so are like 100 other mad scientist superhero types. The singing part is, well, because this is a musical.
-
That was a better explanation that we are used to in talkback (except for maybe when Vern comes knocking). Moist's joke also stems from the fact that he's the typical "patsy" sidekick that many comically evil characters have hanging around him. Wedon layers his humor well. But from now on, please refrain from logic and just call Whedon a stripper whore or something. We have standards around here.
-
Balcony Fool...did you just fuckin "explain" the "humor" in this shit?
-
Nah, just gave a couple of reasons why I, personally, find the humor effective.
Like I said in my previous post, you can't explain humor, per se.
(Damn, I feel like a pretentious asshole in this thread. "Archetypical," "juxtaposition," and "per se" all in one thread? Seriously?)
balconyfool.wordpress.com -
You are awesome. Thank you for seriously responding to my post. Taking into consideration your points, I will view further Whedon projects with this knowledge.
-
LOL
My bad. What I meant was, "Fellate me, SirLoin! If u don't lolz at Dr Hoorible u don't know shit about teh funny. Cock."
balconyfool.wordpress.com -
Let's not be nasty because someone likes something. Buffy musical veered from brilliance - until the read faced fellow appeared - then bad.
-
maybe it's because i'm a little gay for joss's big forehead, but i am really loving the hell out of this so far... this is the sort of thing that i think would rule as a bad ass rock opera stage show.... maybe i'm alone but just think about it....
-
That was so much better then the first one on every level. Not to say it was that bad.Just wasn't feeling it the same way.WHy does every tb seem to have haters?
-
you one funny mother fucker....
(and thank you for so eloquently describing joss's humor for all of us [hell of a lot better than us stoners could])
haha -
Because this series is awesome so far.
I would love to see this as a musical or feature-length movie. -
It supposedly is a movie but I don't want just one episode after tonight.I wonder what the numbers are so far.Hopefully good enough for a sequel and please don't have the singing cowboys back.
-
The singing cowboys rule. "There will be blood, it might be yours, so go kill someone! Signed, Bad Horse!"
*thumbs up*
balconyfool.wordpress.com -
Are some of my favorites.
I hope we run into Bad Horse in the final episode. -
so far seems like I am overruled on the inx/nay on the singing cowboys.I just love the NPH , Nathan Fillion and great dialogue between the two so much more then broke back cowboys singing.heh.
-
but I just can't help but chuckle at the freewheeling absurdity of this series. The singing cowboy couriers, doctor horrible stalking the girl on her date cracked me up, and Captain Hammer plays the asshole boyfriend perfectly. All the sight gags have been done a billion times before but they flow great with the narrative of the musical. Awaiting act 3.
-
I wasn't to sure how this would work but now I am definitely going to buy that last song from Itunes. When it becomes avalible.
-
I don't love everything Joss touches (I honestly think the further away he stayed from 'Angel,' the better off it was), but this is just too fun. Nathan Fillion just kills in this (like he does in everything else), and Neil Patrick Harris is PERFECT for this role. I would so watch this if it were a regular show, as long as they promised not to even think about raising the budget.
-
I could not have said it better myself.
I am not a Whedonite, but for the last few years, I realized that his dialogue writing skills are pretty amazing. His lines simultaneously advance the character, and advance the plot while adding a little helping of funny or proverbial on the side. It all comes in a neat little package the conciseness of which might have been envied even by the Romans.
I'm not sure you realize how much work this requires, even if you got talent. I am amazed and amused by it. -
sadly a catchphrase we are unlikely to see on t-shirts.
-
what a wonderful, hilarious surprise this show has turned out to be.
-
That was great. The hammer baby! Seriously Moist is the best sidekick ever with only 2 minutes of air time.
-
and something the networks can't cancel. hope they keep turning them out.
perhaps 3-6 a year. then a new cast, repeat. sorta a super hero musical spy-vs-spy with whedon doing what he does well. (when studios arent screwing with his style). -
"...that's the same as the surface layer. Like pie." Sure, this hits some of my favorite targets, and some of the jokes are obvious and easy, but the characters are all endearing and the songs are damn impressive.
-
Two geek tastes that go great together. Bring on Act Three!
-
I meant "Penis."
-
i was a big buffy dork, a big firefly nerd, and now i'm geeked about the third episode of this.
joss whedon writes great songs.
-joss whedon -
A predictable comeback indeed. Not what I'd expect from someone with such an advanced sense of humour. Must try harder.
-
...This really, really isn't Whedon on form. There were a couple of laughs in Act 2 though. I counted them.
-
No, that's not right. Bleegggkkkccc. No. Gluurrkkk. Flekktt. Hmm... Uggggkhh. Nope, can't seem to get be able to write the sound I made when I threw up in my mouth watching this. Sweet jesus is this awful. It's like a shitty high school musical.
-
Why can't network or even cable shows (South Park excluded) be this funny and well done?
-
Didnt expect to like it, but it grew on me. I should have known it would, since thats how everything Joss has snuck up on me. Very quotable. "The thoroughbred of evil." "Do not bounce." great stuff. Side note- anyone read a book called "Soon I will be invincible?" Just read it, it mines the same material in a similar way
-
I will be waiting for your "better" entry in this type of endevour. I don't see why you can't do it, Whedon didn't use a studio to get it done.
-
Someone does something unique and new ... and folks pull their pants down and take a steaming dump on it.
This IS a crappy highschool musical...but that is it's charm and why it works. If it was a slicker, big-budget film or TV pilot, it wouldn't have the low-budget earnestness that Dr. Horrible has in spades. When it hits DVD, I am buying it for sure...especially if it is bundled with a cd or comes with ROM content (MP3s!).
Now, what we need are more people to do stuff of this quality and get it to the people. The distribution of this is the key thing...and is almost more interesting than the product...it will be interesting to see what the numbers are on the day's "broadcasts" and how many people download it when it is not free. If this becomes a successful and viable way to create content and share it...then market it...then we finally have a real alternative to the TV/Movie studio model of content. This may be the future. -
I apologize in advance for tripping over you at ComicCon...again...
Dude. Seriously. Fiddle with the backpack at a table, NOT the middle of an aisle, where you can be easily tripped over.
See you at the Big Show.

According to the interview with TV Guide's Matt Roush:
The ultimate goal: a DVD, at which time perhaps enough profit can be made "to pay the people who were doing us favors," says Whedon. In a chat following my nearly private screening (attended only by Whedon, a few of his New York-based agents and me), Whedon confided, "We're already working on some of the DVD extras, which are going to be the finest in all the land. We're actually going to do, in addition to the commentary, what we refer to as 'commentary with an exclamation point'! A musical commentary that is a completely original musical, that is all commentary songs, and we're writing that now." As I gasped at that audacious notion, he continued: "We're just piling it on. We're like, we're going to make more fun of the idea of extras than anything else."
How frackin' sweet is that???
