No OFFICE Spinoff!! SNL's Amy Poehler To Join NBC's New Not-Spinoff From OFFICE Creators!!

Published at:  Jul 16, 2008 12:14:45 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The spin-off of “The Office” won’t be a spin-off after all!

And Amy Poehler will be joining her old pal Tina Fey on Thursday nights!

The long-planned NBC sitcom from “Office” writer-producers Greg Daniels and Mike “Mose” Schur will not share characters with the Steve Carell series, but will still get the post-“Office” timeslot early next year.

Poehler will star in the new series alongside fellow sketch-show vet Aziz Ansari (“Human Giant”) in the not-spinoff.

She’ll presumably quit “Saturday Night Live,” where she’s been a cast member since 2001.

The title and premise of the new sitcom are as yet undisclosed and perhaps even undetermined.

An item on E! -- quoting an "always been reliable" source who said "Office" vet Rashida Jones will be part of the new series -- is now obviously open to question.

Find all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

the spin-off seemed destined to fail. they must've had some ideas, but transplanting characters would be a no-no, and i guess they decided against entirely new characters... oh well, there's time for spin-off after the flagship's finished. for now, stick to keeping it as good as possible.

    What the fuck?

    by docbosch

It was already a spin-off of the Office that had nothing to do with the Office. Now it's not a spin-off of the Office that has nothing to do with the Office. What's next, a not-spin-off of the Office that is actually the Office? Then it will slowly become the Office, while the actual Office is cancelled.

    SNL takeover?

    by jopari

Three out of the four shows on Thursdays have significant ties to SNL. Interesting.

Hopefully the lineup goes Earl-Poehler-30 Rock-TNL so that I can tune in at nine and miss the painfully unfunny redneck sitcom that is Earl and the predictably horrible abortion that'll be Poehler's latest. Don't get me wrong, I think the American Office is funny, but the funniest writers on Earth couldn't make me laugh at Poelher. When the dog in Mean Girls was chewing on her nipple I couldn't help but think "Come on, the jugular's right there..."

Always thought she was funny on UCB. Way overused on SNL. I actually liked the weekend update with her and that one guy, but her and that 30 Rock chick not so much. Probably will the skip the sitcom though.

Could never stand her. She has some talent, but got sick of her always laughing at her own jokes when she did the Update segments. There was always something off-putting about her. Deep down she thinks she's the next comedy superstar, but let me tell you sister, you ain't!!

    by palooka_boy

a spinoff of the office would just come off as forced and unnecessary, even if the show was a quality one. this way we could get an office-quality show and be able to separate it as its own show, rather than just a off-shoot or--god forbid--a ripoff.

    by supertoyslast

How on earth could an Office spin-off have possibly worked? It would be difficult to make it significantly different from the original while maintaining the quality. It would have pretty much been more episodes of The Office with different character and would have diluted the original. Why NBC announced that this would be an Office spin-off I have no idea. I guess the producers realised they could do something better and changed their minds. Which goes to show how smart NBC's "plan-a-year-in-advance-to-please-the-advertisers" idea really is.

    It's an Office Spin Off

    by a-cod

This is a tough one. Variety says it's not an Office Spin off but The Finke posted yetserday that it is a spin off and NBC is trying to keep it under wraps. She also revealed that the first episode will play after the Superbowl. I'm going in with The Finke, Herc, it's a spin off. We'll see.

I've always wondered why they decided to name this quartet of films a "quadrilogy"? Is there a reason to make up such a word. Was "tetrology" not good enough for them?

    UCB MUTHER FUCKERS!!!

    by patentpending

You guys have no idea how exciting this is. Obviously you Poehler hating qeeks have never heard of the UCB theater. Let me just clue you in to the growing comedy scene in NY and LA. The UCB theater is an improv and sketch school that puts on 3 or 4 shows every night. It was co founded by Amy Poheler and is the largest non acredited college in the country. Aziz Ansari and the human giant got their start there, and so did the dude who plays Andy on the office!!! The school has been open for like 10 years now but the scene has really only erupted in the past 4 or so years. The comedians from that school are getting jobs all over the comedy industry. (They basically run the sketches on Conan obrien). 30 rock was one outlet for ucb performers to make guest spots ( like that dude that plays the page another UCB performer.)and get a shot, but now with Amy Poehler and Aziz being cast to the Office spinoff you will likely have a chance to see some of the most innovative comedians from both coasts get their starts in comedy. Trust me it will be fucking cool!!!! www.ucbtheater.com

Kristen Wiig and Cheri Oteri were the best women on SNL

    by bobparr

Amt Poehler is good sketch comedy performer but she was just horrible on Weekend Update and her movies also seem to suck. I hate the way she and Tina Fey wink at the camera and beg the audience to laugh at their awkward deliveries.
I've googled Kristen Wiig a million times but can neve find a picture of her in a bikini to spank it too.

I was really hoping for Rashida Jones. Poehler is so-so and I'm tired of her. Also I was really hoping it would be an Office spinoff, so that little snowglobe world could keep on going after the office closes up shop in a few years.

    by chewyou812

But did they really have to put her on NBC thursday? I have to agree with a previous poster hoping that they'll put her on right after the train wreck that is Earl so that I can tune in at nine & watch the two entertaining shows. NBC really blew thursdays a couple of years ago. They should've given Scrubs the respect it deserves instead of treating it like their bastard child and they once had a chance to pick up Arrested Development. Those two shows paired with office & 30 rock would've been gold! "Gold Jerry, Gold!"
