Warner Bros. and Capcom Send David Hayter to a LOST PLANET

Published at:  Jul 15, 2008 2:56:28 AM CDT

Beaks here...

E3 is underway here in Los Angeles, and it looks like the big news for Tuesday - as far as the film industry is concerned - is that Capcom and Warner Brothers are partnering on a big screen transfer of LOST PLANET. I've never played the game myself, but it's probably a good thing that they've signed David Hayter on to write the screenplay, seein' as how he's got mad street cred from being the voice of Solid Snake in METAL GEAR SOLID.

The game apparently deals with the quest for a life-sustaining energy source emanating from an icy planet. I imagine this energy source is protected by lots of nasty creatures that need shooted.

Chances LOST PLANET winds up being better than the Steven E. de Souza-directed STREET FIGHTER: not good.

As long as they take a more "Alien" approach with the monsters, and really focus on the desolation and isolation of a frozen winter planet.

Actually, fuck Hollywood, they'd never do it right. I'll just write the script myself.

I liked the game. The grappling hook reminded me a bit of Bionic Commando. Granted, I just rented it once and never finished it, so maybe it gets crappy later. The story for the game didnt' make much sense either, so he's got plenty of room to work with in the script.

I thought the point of the xbox 360 was to deliver superior graphics, but that thing looked uglier than stuff the original xbox used to run.

also, it was dull, dull, dull. yes, it had plenty of action in it, but it was action concerning characters and a storyline people had no interest in.

    by photoboy

But its story was a fucking confused mess. It's like they made a bunch of cut-scenes that had sod-all to do with the game and just interspersed them between the levels. Hopefully Hayter will be able to turn out a script like MGS1 or MGS3 rather than the mess that was MGS2 and MGS4...

After all, the game character was based on his likeness so why not? By now he should be finished shooting his scenes as storm shadow for the upcoming GIJoe movie. As for the game itself, it wasn't too bad as long as you overlook the lame story. It had good graphics, planet hothesque scenery, a Bionic commando grappling device and the fact that you can pilot mechs is worth owning this game. just my opinion.

Actually Shermdog the part you are refering about (post voice actors' credits) was a unexpected surprise that had me saying "how could this be?" but afterwards, it provided closure to the series' plotlines. As for the BB Corps' well I guess Kojimasan wanted to paint a Human side to the "Bosses"(kinda like tagc comicbook villians I.E. Joker.) while detailing the horrors that occur within War-torn countries. The game itself was as good if not better than an epic movie.Best game of the Year thus far.

    by filmfunk

And some of it was rediculous and so juvenile if it was a movie you'd probably leave the theatre. at one point there's a soldier who gets caught literally with his pants down hiding in a barrel taking a shit! then later I think it's the same character joins a group of elite soldiers and still has embarrassing flatulence! Opps! he shat himself again! Tee Hee What's that all about! I played the first and best Metal Gear Solid on the playstation where you had to infiltrate a snowy mountain top base and if they ever do a Metal Gear Game then they should base it on that because I don't remember it containing cheesy shit like the admittedly visually superior recent ones!Oh, and I thought Forbidden Planet was excellent and reminded me of a next gen Bionic Comandos with knobs on. Not sure it'll make a good movie but the game was kind of oldskool fun.

Game was at best mediocre....at worst, terrible.

by just another useless chump with a microp

There's an old joke that's appeared in television and movies where someone (usually a child) is claiming some art skills, so they hand a character a blank piece of paper, saying it's their masterpiece. The character says "But this is blank!" And the would-be artist says "No, it's a portrait of a polar bear hiding in the snow during a blizzard!"

That's what Lost Planet was like to me. Combine it with slow and sluggish control, atrocious (even for a video game!) voice acting, ridiculously repetetive enemy design, and a ridiculously uneven difficulty level, and you've got yourself one crappy gameplay experience.

Seriously, during the levels themselves, it is almost impossible to die. Your suit constantly heals you so long as you have energy, and energy drops in copious amounts from every individual alien you kill. And this is a game that likes to throw swarms at you. To offset this, they decided the bosses should be able to kill you in one or two hits, and be 50x faster than you.

There was one boss that is in a large mech. When the cutscene ends, you're standing about five feet away from the mech you need to use to fight her. More often than not, she would use her mech's Super Ultra Death Ray to kill me either A) before I could get into my mech, or B) during my mech's agonizingly slow 7-second start up phase. It drove me nuts.

Plus the plot of the game really isn't that interesting. It's kind of what I call a "Human arrogance story". We come to a planet, an are attacked by its denizens. Oh woe is humanity, we must fight back. Really? Giant vicious bugs though they may be, it's THEIR PLANET!!! Why should we sympathize with the humans for invading these bugs' planet? They were there first!

    MGS4 was awesome!

    by johnno

And that pant shitting character was technically 'there' in all the Solid games. Yeah MGS is better than a lot of movies, and about the odd shit in it, honestly, remember it's a fucking game. Games can be longer than movies without having to worry about screentime pacing and shit like a film does and they can include anything they want just for fun. Kojima is creating a cinematic game, he himself says he puts things into it just for fun and ridiculousness. If you want to make a movie, of course you'd have to cut the unnecessary shit out. But for a game, it's all good. You save and come back to it later so games can be as long as they want. Anyway, I didn't like the way the B&B stories were presented. They should've worked them into the story in a more presentable fashion like MGS2. But then you'd get people bitching that they don't care and blah blah blah. Well you can't please everyone... For me MGS2 was the best one. But I liked the after credits ending. I was initially against the idea if you'd asked me before the game was out but after watching it, it was awesome and touching closure that truly ties up everything.

    by kungfuhustler84

too poor for a PS2 right now. However, I am a huge fan of the rest of the series. While 2 had some great moments, and was very innovative, the protagonist was pretty annoying and not very interesting. Although from what I have seen from the trailers for 4, he is now a certified badass. I loved 3's style a lot, with all the 60s tech and outfits. Those boss fights were incredible too. The ending fight with the boss in the field is just breathtaking. 1 is still the best though. If they made a movie and they didn't want to start with the earlier Metal Gear games, I would hope that they would get most of the story from that. Oh Lost Planet? I don't really give a shit. Hayter is a good writer though. It's a movie game. It will have a soundtrack consisting of unoriginal heavy metal and will star several no-name actors with little to no charisma. There will be lots of one liners, cliches, and maybe some cool effects.

If you missed it you might want to check it out. Also, for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the 360 version was the superior version of the game. And, the PS3 is indeed having a price drop to $399. Not what I'd call cheap, but nothing is anymore.
