'A Letter Of Condemnation From The Deputy Mayor!!' MUTANT ENEMY'S NEWEST SUPERHERO TUNER, DR. HORRIBLE, ONLINE NOW!!

Published at:  Jul 15, 2008 2:37:24 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog,” launched at 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday.

It’s a musical about a mean, muscular superhero who keeps beating up a far less muscular aspiring evil mastermind.

Directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by the Whedon Bros. and this girl who apparently really likes one of the Whedon Bros., “Dr. Horrible” stars Neil Patrick Harris (“Starship Troopers”), Nathan Fillion (“Desperate Housewives”) and supercute Felicia Day (who played a vampire slayer not named Buffy on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”).

You can watch it for free until Sunday if you click here.

The first third or so arrived tonight, the second third turns up Thursday and the last of it debuts Saturday.

Then on Sunday, they take it all away.

If you want to legally watch it after Sunday, it’ll cost you. First via download, then via one of those newfangled “digital versatile discs” I keep hearing about.

Numerous members of the press saw the whole shebang last week.

Variety says:

… High-quality superhero-and-supervillain fun. With a swell soundtrack of original tunes.…

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… packed with Whedon's trademark sarcasm and wit as well as clever commentary on how "society is slipping" and changing the establishment. …

The Los Angeles Times says:

… The audience loved it, and for good reason. … The story, music and acting are all top-notch, and judging by the laughs, oohs and ahs from the audience, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the Web's first major scripted hit. …

E! Online says:

… Not only is the music fiercely catchy, I can also tell you that Felicia sings (and looks) like an angel; Nathan is hilarious and vocally strong; and to the shock of absolutely no one, including the isolated Yanomamo tribe in Brazil, Neil Patrick Harris just kills it. In general, there's a catchy quality to the lyrics (being full, as they are, of funny rhymes and smart metaphors) that is definitely reminiscent of "Once More, With Feeling." …

The teaser for those who missed it:

I Want A "Mutant Enemy" Movie!!!

    by media messiah

Wouldn't it be cool to have a Joss do a movie called "Mutant Enemy"??? I just love the idea.As for a Super Hero Musical. I think the idea is great. When I first heard of Dr. Horrible without any story details that idea just seemed stupid, but Joss always has an Ace up his sleeve so I waited to see what it was and this seems to be a Gem of a concept!!!

    by balcony fool

Act One was genius. You've gotta love how they conceived this: tight, funny and... musical? NPH gets the job done, obviously, and Fillion's always a treat to watch, but Felicia Day is leaps and bounds better than she is The Guild! Guess having a genuine director at the helm really pulls it out of her. I'll be counting the minutes 'til Act 2.

This rocked. NPH is a god, Felecia Day is wonderfully beautiful, and what can be said of Nathan Fillion other than that he was MEANT for this role as the cocksure, strutting superhero? Oh, and phoenixmagi2, there's a moderate amount of self-loathing in your post. Come out of the closet already.

A fair few of us might disagree on one particular point, noting that Fillion was MEANT for a certain other role--but he fills this one gloriously, as well. :)

Breaking News!!! Links For Global Audiences Are On The Way!!!

    by media messiah

In regard to the iinternational audiences having troubles linking to "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", Joss has left a message on Whedonesque, personally apologizing for the mishap. It turns out there is a law in Canada that demands that all clips be in French as well as English or they cannot be run by anyone. Joss and crew were not aware of such a law and thus were caught in a catch 22.As per other international territories, Joss and cohorts, as well as I-Tunes, etc., confess to being overwhelmed by the new technologies and want everyone to know this has nothing to do with anyone State side being U.S.-centric. This is simply a technical issue that they, especially Joss' brother Jed, is working overnight attempting to solve...but he, Joss, notes that Apple and other companies involved, are incredibly big, adding to the stumbling blocks at hand.

Why they don't just offer a download option

    by chewtoy

Essentially, because they would like to sell it. It's free now, this week, for viewing on the internet. After this week, it'll be available for download for a price. After that, it'll apparently be out on DVD with various extras. This is the equivalent of a show airing on free television before hitting DVD.

You *can* download it from iTunes right now (though I don't know how that goes for international folks).

As to why you can't just download it for free at the site, they reportedly spend in the "low six figures" to produce this thing. That's out-of-pocket money, no studio involved. Obviously, they need to make some of that money back, so you can watch it for free, but if you want a copy to keep, you buy it for $1.99 at iTunes, or purchase the DVD (with extras) when it comes out.

I've watched this thing about ten times now, and can't get enough. Felicia Day is adorable. And who knew the songs would actually be decent? "A Maaaaaaaaaan's gotta do what a maaaaaaaan's gotta do!"

Balcony... Thank you for the info...

    by tbdeinc

One thing about streaming on the internet... a plugin in Firefox or any other web browser kinda makes streaming-only-no-save, an exercise that doesn't work... MY SUGGESTION IS: offer the video at 480 for free... and ask customers to pay for it in HD with extra's and other such stuff, like commentary, etc, etc... Streaming only works if you have a good connection to the internet... and the internet is not supposed to be like TV (without TiVO) where you HAVE to watch a show at a prescribed time period... that really is backwards thinking... Internet: Watch what you want, when you want...

    by tbdeinc

Not that I am advocating, blah, blah, blah... but Microsoft and Nintendo came out with products that by the end of the day/week the news reported that they got hacked... a search in google, if not today, tommorrow, etc... will pop-up a link to a freeware that will bypass whatever... WHY go thru this process of streaming only and be a factor to continued bypassing mentality from the internet... and be straight up... offer a 480 version free... offer an HD version with extra's for money...

Hope JW is paying attention... I will definately wait for the DVD release with the extra's... oh... can anyone right now get to the drhorrible website? no... hmmmm....

I loved Act I, but I get this nagging feeling

    by acappellaman

That the web site crashing is not quite an accident. If it's not an accident, they're purposefully not bringing it back up. Imagine how much money they're making off of iTunes for this, rather than viewing the "free" stream. I can understand the site being down for an hour or two, but in this day and age, it doesn't take much to bring a web site back up and increase the bandwidth so more users can access it.

Look, I LOVE Joss' work, but I don't like how this smells. I say this even though I plan on buying the DVD when it comes out, so I'm not out to get my free jollies from Joss and run. I seriously hope I'm wrong about this.

FYI, I had to access the stream from a different site that got hold of the first Act, otherwise I wouldn't have seen it yet, sicne the site has been down now for an entire 24 hours. Inexcusable. Come on, Joss!

Both Dr, Horrible and Whedonesque. I watched Act 1 it yesterday after work a mere 4 hours after the crash note from Joss, so the site was not down 24 freaking hours.
