THE VENTURE BROS. 3.7!!
I am – Hercules!!
Yet another episode explores the untidy legacy of Jonas Venture as Brock and Rusty get trapped in different parts of the family compound's vast and forgotten basement.
Homages to “The Shining,” “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” and probably lots of other ‘80s movies I just didn’t notice await.

watching spiderwick with the kiddos and waiting desperately for Dark Knight....yawn, I love summer
-
Heh. Too funny how they like to incorporate bands into the show as characters.
"I go where the blacktion is."
-
Love this show! Can't believe we are more than halfway through the season!
-
JUst had to remind me that were halfway through you bastard.Good episode. There was even talk of french toast but their was none to be had.
-
ya, i know the dude won the peabody, but when they forget their roots, you know their is no hope for a celeb...is there any doubt that venture bros is the best animated show ever on tv...well maybe number 2, after the mighty heroes...in fact, although out of their age range, would love to see the venture dudes take on that classic toon
-
Ya got me thinking man. Recently I managed to finally see the remake of Get Smart(it was ok). What hit me half way through the movie was how Carell sorta sounded like colbert as impossible. Hell, the guy could possibly even give the guy a little bit more range. Warburton has been getting great lines this season though. Yada yada, screw the Canadian embargo. Although I was surprised on how the commentary for the fith wasn't blocked.
-
That was my second favorite line. As for the season being half over. Let's start praying now that the 4th season doesn't take as long to premiere as this season did. Though you can't rush genius.
-
They also fit in a dude dressed as David Bowie from Ashes to Ashes. Good ep, not as good as last weeks but definitely up there. Loved The Shining reference.
-
Art of Noise, War Games, Resident Evil, Alien, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, The Shining, Journey to the Center of the Earth... crazy.
-
Great episode!
-
and yeah, already got my TDK midnight ticket bought and paid for. it's Nolan's summer, we're just living in it.
-
...to his dollies.
-
being raised on vh1 classic. they pulled a good 180 on me, could have sworn they were going with an Avengers themed episode.
-
Then Mr. White pushes the kleenex box away. Eh? Eh? YOU know what I'm talking about! Kleenex is SUCH a slut! Awesome. Hellboy II and a new Ventures in the same day! Plus I found out how to increase the disc space and speed of a Mac laptop by firewiring a bigger hard drive to it! Sweet day! Plus a weekend so no work tomorrow! Wheee!
-
they are really firing on all cylinders here, and have been all season long!
-
At first he was built up to be some mythical cannot be touched or soiled figure. But with this, Mother, and possibly fathering a child with Col. Horace Gentleman's wife. I think by seasons end, we're going to get a major reveal about Jonas.
-
The Shining reference to the guy in the bear costume looking up was superb. And yeah the shit Jonas has done is really really terrible. I was happy to get an Orpheus heavy episode.
-
VERY GEEKY, but my favorite part was when the Blackula hunter tells Orpheus "I bet you didn't know I also train carrier pigeons on the roof!" SWEET!
-
NOPE. No Blackulas." The hints of backstory and character we got with Jefferson Twilight were wonderful, as well as the callback to no black English vampires.
-
... he's a TWISTED firestarter!

That Reminds Me of My Other Favorite Obscure Mid-90s Reference

When on that quadruple date in Season 2, Monarch mentions that Dr. Girlfriend used to look like the chick from Republica. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3BmxjhmN20&feature=related

A lot of characters in the show have murky parental origins, at least one due to Jonas Venture's sexcapades. Brock doesn't know his real father. So I just want to throw this out there: Has anyone pointed out that Brock and Jonas Venture have the same face? Could this be part of the show's overall story, and part of the reason much of this season deals with the de-idealizing of Jonas Venture-- everyone is a Venture Brother?
-
What a sack! Little did we realized Rusty lives up to his father's legacy far more than Jonas Jr. does. And the Order of the Triad really came into their own in this one, especially Action Blacktion aka Jefferson "Rough Hands" Twilight. I think this was the best episode since "Ghosts of the Sargassum" or "Tag Sale" in the first season. Hammer and Publick can do no wrong and should be given a government grant to just sit around and think crap up all day to entertain us.
-
To clarify, he never said there are no black English vampires. He said he called black vampires "blackulas" and not "African/American" vampires because that would be stupid. What if they're in England? Cause, England isn't you know... America.
-
the prodigy/art of noise 1, 2 punch was brilliant. The stance of the girl from the art of noise video was perfect.
-
Just saying...
-
...but some higher channels leak through. I get a crappy, snowy signal on Cartoon network/[adult swim], though, so I'm really glad I can watch this online on my nice crisp 20.1" monitor about two feet in front of my face (and actually read signs, subtitles, etc.)
People talk about Lost, Dexter and the hip show du jour Mad Men being the Best Shows On TV and I honestly don't see why The Venture Brothers isn't included on that short list more often. Best cartoon show since "God, The Devil and Bob" or "Clerks," whichever one aired last. No, wait, JLU.
-
even the greats (Kirby) and near greats (Byrne). But the characters on the Venture Brothers are all so distinctive you have to wonder when they resemble each other.
Jonas Venture has a similar face and build to Brock Samson, who seems may have his own juvenile delinquent/bully illegitimate offspring. And Jonas Jr. has his dad's face but a dwarfish body.
Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture clearly resembles his archer The Monarch and also shares a similar appearance and identical hair color with Dr. Quymn. Her twins (do we still think Drew Quymn may be a transvestite?) vaguely resemble Dean Venture. Dean seems to take after Rusty while the buffer Hank takes after his likely mother (Rusty's former bodyguard). Last year we learned that many of the key characters attended college together, not we're getting hints that they may be related. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say "everyone is a Venture Brother," but it certainly is one big hyper-dysfunctional family.
-
who's their dad? Just saying.
-
" THE VENTURE BROS. SEASON 4 HAS BEGUN PRODUCTION!!!" Fuck yeah.
-
My jaw dropped and then I laughed for the entire rest of the show. It's the literalist in me, I think. I was still laughing about it this evening and I watched the ep yesterday afternoon. I love it because it takes the premise of that video seriously. What if there really WAS a crazy punky British guy running around the sewers yelling, "I'm the firestartah!!"
-
hope they are allowed to stay on sched and come out in 09
-
seems like lots more comic related stuff and lots less entertainment junk...maybe hollywierd is souring on the con...goody...oh and bad news for heroes fans...maya is coming back, she is on the heroes panel...oh, and no lost panel this year

Reviewing the theme of failure as it sits now
by Shut the Fuck up Donny
It's becoming apparent that Rusty keeps living in his father's shadow, but he's probably a far better man than his father in many ways; He generally acknowledges his failures (unlike Jonas who hides them: the kids left underground; the abandoning/sealing of the E-den), and I think he is actually a better father. It's subtle (and debatable, I'm sure), but at least Dr. Venture wears his heart on his sleeve and interacts with his kids on all levels (albeit usually to his irritation), while Jonas seemed to use Rusty as a vehicle for his own success and notoriety (while at the same time keeping up a wall of emotion). Lastly, mark my words: don't be surprised if it turns out some of the great inventions of Jonas Venture were not of his origin, but of another who was also manipulated for Jonas' gain.
-
Not a single guy from Adult swim is yet signed on to show up for Dragoncon, and they and the fucking convention are located in ATLANTA. I'm just praying they're being their usual pothead selves and taking their sweet time to make the arrangements.
-
I knew the little girl the moment I saw her! It WOULD be intimidating for the crew from "Close to the Edit" to show up in the real world, odd weapons in hand. What a jam-packed episode.
-
Too bad we're halfway through the third season. Giving real world sensibilities to the Hannah Barbera sunday morning cartoon world... It's amazing. Is that true that the 3th and 4th series were produced back to back?
-
just pointing out a fact...and they should show up to their hometown con...maybe nyc con burnt everyone out...the only thing im irritated about is that gerber isnt getting a memorial panel, but evanier emailed me and said that was because everyone would want at least 30 more memorial panels for those who have left us in the past year...but i disagree...if there was one man who had the biggest impact on current comicdom, it is gerber...no gerber...no moore, gaiman, miller, etc...the first artist to go out on a limb regarding creator rights, only to get burned by his fellow creators...i think it is a shame...and shoot, what would be wrong with having 30 memorial panels...replace the dc direct one...who the fuck cares what new dolls are coming out this year...
-
with the bigger conventions: the money aspect is starting to weigh too much in in director decisions. Yes, there should be 30 memorial panels if the attendees want to see that. Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of friends and professionals of those who have passed that would love to speak at a few (Evanier would probably speak at half of them, alone!). But, toys gotta sell and vendors gotta wanna come back to pay for booth space. I'd like to say that Dragoncon isn't like that yet (and still keeps the fuck-it-all, we'll throw a bunch of panels up and see what sticks), but even I see they are losing some of their organic nature.

Genius!! And how did Keith from Prodigy end up in there?
by Col. Tigh-Fighter
Funny as fuck. Love the fact the adults all left the kids down there lol
-
Did I see a signpost that read Sealab (to the left), Colossus (AKA:The Forbin Project, to the right)? This show continues to amaze.
-
Here's hoping for an Adam Ant-looking guy called The Highwayman or a guy who looks like Sting in the "Synchronicity II" video.
-
I do not believe we're going to see anything like Brock being related to the Ventures or Rusty being related to the Monarch, but I really do love the theme of tearing down the myth of Jonas Venture. Suddenly, he's not the super hero father we all thought we knew. He's pretty much a scumbag. I also like that we don't know how he died. Remember the Monarch asked the Guild how it happened? I think that's going to be the finale this season, the truth about the death of the original Dr. Venture. I can't wait. Great development of Twilight by the way, such a great episode.
-
Jonas Venture was a weapons supplier to the Guild of Calamitous Intent. OSI gave the kill order and instituted "Rusty's Blanket" out of a guilt. - Dermott, who was hinted at being Brock's son is actually HANK'S son from a time-travel adventure that's not remembered by the current Hank-Clone. - Pete White, Billy Quizboy, Brock, and the Triad will take on the moniker of "Team Venture" for at least one adventure. - Hank will die again. Dean will not. - Sgt. Hatred will be tricked by the Monarch into breaking "Meghan's Law" with the Moppets as bait, freeing up Rusty's arching spot. - Kano will be the one to air out Jonas Venture's dirty laundry to his family.
-
keith flint first showed up was the fact that I didn't see it coming.
not by a long shot.
until he was standing in front of rusty, and I was one part laughing my ass off, one part having a seizure due to 90s flashbacks...
-
I figure they gave Brock "Rusty's Blanket" because they wanted him out of the way. He was the only one at OSI that believed in the Guild, plus he is a badass. But I love the idea of an episode wherein one of the boys dies and the other doesn't. What do they do in that instance? Kill the live one so they reboot together?
-
Interesting thing you reminded me of...since Brock was purposely handed "Rusty's Blanket" by a guy who turned out to be Sgt. Hatred of the Guild, perhaps there's a deeper reason to it all. Why would the Guild want Rusty Venture protected by an unstoppable Swedish murder machine? Unless the Guild wants to keep Rusty alive for some unknown reason? Maybe something to do with the secret of Jonas Venture's death?
-
That's entirely possible. I was thinking it was to keep Brock out of any real action, but it could be a deeper plan. Was that corrupt OCI guy really a young Sgt. Hatred? Didn't catch that. "Wonderful, that's one for us and 5 billion for the Apocalypse." "I can't help but think that Rusty would have wanted it that way."
-
While most of the refrences were over my head this season hasn't had a bad episode yet. And I almost got to see some original Team Venture action, something i've been waiting for since they were introduced.
-
Yeah, the name of the officer who assigned Brock to his mission was a Sgt. Haine(a french noun for hatrid). The primary(and most likely logic wise) suggestion was to get the two men(Samson and Gathers) out of the way for when the guild decided to make its return. From the information presented from these last episodes it is assumed that between the continuation of operation "Rusty's blanket"(by Brock, taking over for Myra) and the Berlin Incident that the guild returned to the public eye.
-
the little guy was "like the Ant-Man from that Marvel comic, the Avengers" then how did they not recognize the Impossibles as the Fantastic Four or Orpheus as Dr. Strange? Not looking for real world logic here, but isn't that a little inconsistant?
-
I am pretty sure the impossibles won with a costume contest as the Fantastic Four in one of the episodes.
-
I've never been the same either, since my mom was taken by a group of rogue blackulas.
