The Rebellion Wins! FANBOYS is back in Fanboys' hands! The Victory Is Yours!

Published at: July 11, 2008, 12:15 a.m. CST by headgeek

Hey folks, Harry here... Somewhere in this world a lot of us are smiling! The Force is strong with you folks - and it made its presence known and this victory was brought to my attentions via Yoko who is quite excited that the version we saw nearly 2 years ago is where the film is headed again. So feel good - and look sharp for tickets at Comic Con - the real FANBOYS is coming!

Fellow Star Wars Fans, The battle to save Fanboys is over! AND WE WON! The Weinstein Company has decided to listen to the outcry from Star Wars fans around the globe! They have restored the original plotline and have given the movie back to the Star Wars fans who made it! The film has been given back to the original director and he is currently editing the final version at Skywalker Ranch! The original cut of the movie will be released in theaters later this year! And there are rumors of a sneak preview of the film happening at the San Diego Comic-Con! We hereby end our boycott of the Weinstein Company! The studio has earned our respect and gratitude by actually listening to their target audience. Our thanks go out to everyone who lent their voices to the Stop Darth Weinstein campaign, and to the thousands of fans who took the time to email the studio. When the original version of Fanboys is released later this year you should all take pride in knowing that you helped make it happen! When the official release date for Fanboys is announced we will post it here! May the Force Be With You Always! Sincerely, Jek Porkins Zev Senesca Biggs Darklighter Dack Ralter & the SDW Squadron

Mate, she wouldn't go near the new trilogy. Period, until we sat down one sat night and watched the three of them back to back. I wanted her to form an opinion without prejudging something. I'm trying to educate her on the world of film as she isn't a big movie lover. my point being, she wasn't completely horrified by it. Granted, of course, parts 1 and 2 are shit on a stick. But part three isn't the travesty everyone makes it out to be. And she enjoyed it. Now she is keen to rewatch the original trilogy with me. Something she hasn't done since she was a kid. Now that deserves a big "Woot Woot!"

  • July 11, 2008, 5:22 a.m. CST

A film that only a few cared about

    by tomdolan04

has finally been given the go ahead to be completed as intended after years of battle, to be shown at probably three cinemas worldwide before hitting the torren...DVD format.
Cynicism aside I'm genuinely pleased for the 'forces' driving this project. Cliches aside, if you have a vision then you should chase it. It's just that the narrative, about a group of mates trying to break into Lucasfilm to see an advanced copy of Episode 1 as a friend is dying of cancer, just doesn't interest me at all.
Fanboyism by it's very nature is difficult to convey. Spaced is probably the best example I've seen of the nature of fanboys coming across but even then that was driven by very talented individuals and straddled a varied number of sources and conventions.

  • July 11, 2008, 5:32 a.m. CST

  • July 11, 2008, 5:59 a.m. CST

    Or...

    by tomdolan04

as anticipated as the Star Wars Clone Wars film. I'm not really a Star Wars buff (my childhood revolved in wonder of TJ Hooker pimping his way through the galaxy), but can you imagine the fuss the mainstream media would be making of the Clone Wars if this were '98? It's due next month isn't it?
Now, nothing. My only interest in Star Wars now is I'm going to show my young cousin the originals in a few weeks - I hope he likes them. Of the CW's barely a mention outside the usual dedicated movie sites, and even then it's muted.
This Fanboy's flick probably will find appreciate from those who've tracked it's development, as the 'it's not the film but the friendship and obsession formed around it' message is understandable but even then it's hard not to be apathetic.
I understand what it is to have a geeky side, but when so much is coming out to get enthused over in terms of indie and mainstream geekdom (I hear a new take on Batman is coming out sometime soon...?), Hellboy, Watchman et al - memories of a galaxy far far away are fond but remain just that.

    TPM

    by sapno_krei

Okay, I know this has probably already been said (and I know I'm risking having my STAR WARS fan card revoked by saying it again), but doesn't the MacGuffin of the film -- a print of THE PHANTOM MENACE -- kind of deflate the urgency of the story? Yeah, I know the film was written years ago, but in retrospect I think a quest for the last film of the saga, REVENGE OF THE SITH, would invite less ridicule.
Yes, I can recall the feverish excitement of 1999. STAR WARS was in the air again, electrified and fresh. But I can also recall the punch-in-the-stomach of sitting in the theater as the credits finally rolled up. "Uh, what did I just see?"

How about redoing Star Wars I-III?

    by EbertsFatThumb

and give back to all the original fanboys what they were hoping for. Directors? Michael Mann - Lots of explosions and many shots of Jedi walking towards the camera in slow motion. Tarantino - 1.5 hours of senseless talking about nothing related to Star Wars and then 30 minutes of pure bloodshed as the Jedi die. Woody Allen - The plot will focus on how old Jedi are coping with dating young girls in the Imperial City. Spike Lee - Lead actor in all three movies will be Samuel L. (Mother Fuckin) Jackson and how his character deals with racism and injustice by beating ignorant white asses throughout the galaxy.

    by DarthBakpao

score big, but TDK is a a fictional fantasy superhero movie. It's dark, grim and yes depressing because bad things happen to people around Bruce Wayne, but in the end it's just a superhero movie, an escapist one. Cancer is real and a lot of people experience losing people they love to cancer in real life.... i don't think people will want to see that, they had enough sadness in real life, why drive miles to the theaters and sit through it again?

    by hollywoodsummers

Harvey made this choice based on $$$ and nothing else. This project has probably leaked so much cash they just want it dead asap. And in truth were more than maybe 1000 people actually going to buy a ticket for this film anyway. It's a future silver drink coaster on the bottom of a bargin bin. Who really gives a rats besides the original director who is probably jerking off right now in a Lucas visitor suite at the Ranch.

So either the kid dies without doing the one thing he wanted to do in his entire life...OR he experiences the crushing disappointment that was episode 1 and dies anyway. I'm the biggest geek on Earth, and I won't touch this movie with a stolen dick.

Why the hell didn't they do the smart thing and...

Combine both the comedic and dramatic storylines? Like he thinks he's gonna die, cue 80 minutes of goofball rites of passage, only to find out he's not gonna die after all because his results got mixed up with some other poor fucker, ready for the feelgood finale where he gets to see TPM, which, in an ironic twist, kills a perfectly healthy human being. Not that I give a fuck about this shitty film either way. The suits are always right, btw. Fuck the nerds.

SPEEDRACER was dead before it debuted

The reviews killed it; the trailer was a catalyst for an autopsy. The film's commercial failure can hardly be attributed to a clutter of cellar dwellers.

Too bad it will still suck

I assume the DVD will have an alternate version?

Curious about it - cuz I met one of the producers this weekend

I was attending the 24hr Film School in Cincinnati this weekend and Matt Perniciaro on a writer's panel. He was really cool and still jazzed about them getting control of the film back... This young guy is a freakin' dynamo... non-stop workin' and involved in several upcoming projects (He wrote/produced a little film called "Fifty Pills" - which shows up Comedy Central a lot) Just from his energy alone, I wanna see it.
