Where X-MEN is right now...
I found out what is going on with X-MEN at the moment. It'll begin shooting up in the Toronto area on September 13th. The production offices move to up there around the second week of July. Right now, the production is thinking about a December 20th, 2000 release date, but that's not etched in stone. There are not fights going on between Fox execs and Bryan Singer, quite the contrary... Word has it that Bryan was spotted with Bill Mechanic at a Dodger's game recently.
Who has been cast so far? Ian McKellen is Magneto. Patrick Stewart is Professor X, Tyler Mane is Sabretooth, and Dougray Scott as Wolverine. Apparently there are a couple of other actors being negotiated with currently... But the production is still in the midst of casting.
The reason the shooting date got pushed was not due to infighting at Fox, but rather to accomadate Dougray Scott's schedule on Mission Impossible 2, and to ensure enough distance between the two productions in case Mission Impossible 2 should go over schedule.
There is no ICEMAN in the basement, and the budget has not been cut... They are still looking for Cyclops, Jean Gray, Storm, Rogue and Senator Kelly... and I believe Kitty Pryde (though that part is in question). Depending who you talk to, the budget is either 75 or 80... but it's right in there.
There are still rumors floating about Russell Crowe and a bunch of others for Wolverine, but this can be put to bed. It's Dougray Scott. How does that pan out? Is he too pretty boyish? I'm sure you all have an opinion, but mine is... I don't know enough about the actor right now. I never saw Ever After, and honestly... I don't remember his character in DEEP IMPACT, but as best I can tell he hasn't played this character before... perhaps in his audition he did a great beserker... perhaps he chews a cigar real well. Maybe he just moved real cool. Maybe he had an excellent gravely voice and a mean stare... I don't know... But I do know I didn't see that audition tape so I'm not going to call for the head of Bryan Singer on this one. He has made two films I really do care for...
Earlier today I was at TOYS R US, and I finally broke down and shelled out the $30 for that GIANT SIZE X-MEN set of figures. And when I got home, my contact... contacted me, and ever since... I've been placing the figures and thinking about this X-MEN movie.
I don't know their current draft, but their old one was in there. It wasn't perfect... but then... they knew that and are working on it. I just want them to nail the various personalities of the characters as well as say Christopher Reeve nailed Superman and Clark Kent. I still haven't seen Batman or Bruce Wayne nailed to my satisfaction, and really... I'm very curious about the possibility of it being nailed.
I'm not sure about you, but for me... When reading my old X-MEN comics (or any comic at all) I had an internal voice for each character. In my psychosis of a mind I can see how they walk, talk and interact. But ya know... That's my vision, I've had that with every issue and every story I've read. This is a chance to see what another person's vision of those same characters are. I'm looking forward to it. It's the reason we go to the movies.
When we saw BATMAN AND ROBIN, we had a very strong reaction... We don't want to see Schumacher's vision of those characters anymore. When we saw Tim Burton's some of us fell in love with his vision and adopted it as our own. With X-MEN... I'm eager to see... what the man who made THE USUAL SUSPECTS and APT PUPIL has to think of the X-Men. And ya know... In a year and a half... we'll know.
Personally, with the casting so far... The two older actors instill faith in me, while the two younger actors instill uncertainty. I can't wait to see how the rest of this pans out.
Right now, I'm just excited that an X-MEN film is coming... and I HOPE it's the right one.

Christopher Reeve nailing Superman and Clark Kent? I'm sorry Harry but I beg to differ. Reeve was great as Kent, but he played Superman a little too wimpy. Also, I agree that the three actors who have played Batman weren't perfect, but George Clooney nailed Bruce Wayne. Now, I think that Dougray Scott is a great second choice to play Wolverine. Its obvious that Crowe wanted more money, but Singer had to shell out the big bucks to Captain Picard. I think when you see M:I 2 you may think differently about Scott, or you should go rent Twin Town. Also, is the actors strike in Canada a reason for the delay in production?
-
For those of you shuddering with fear over Doug Ray Scott playing Wolverine, check out his performance in the so-so TWIN TOWN as the corrupt cop. I have a feeling into will completely blow away your aprehentions. It's also worth seeing for the scene of the two brothers in the bathtub toking up and holding their breath underwater.

As a fello new journalism enthusiast,
I love your bash against the inverted triangle structure, but the "blue" section at the end of the story is sort of confusing (ie sudden tense change. Perhaps you should attribute that section as a message from your "contact," [who by the way does a great job initating Bryan Singer (SP)]. Besides that, I think having a relative unknown as wolverine will perhaps lessen the blow of the disparity between the comic "voice in head" and "voice on scree," if you take my meaning. -
Speaking of screwing up, I believe Gonzo, who say "[who by the way does a great job initating Bryan Singer (SP)]." Meant to say imitating. If we're going to get picky about it and all.
-
If we want to get that picky, my post should have read "who said" instead of "who say" and the "meant" shouldn't've been capitalized. I'm going to go kill myself now. Adieu.

The Uncanny X-men has and always will be my favorite comic book. Its idealism and character interaction are what make it incredible. The most important part of the X-men is the hatred of mutants as a metaphor for racism. If this film can capture even a tenth of that it should be good. I have been waiting and praying for this film for a LONG time. I have high hopes for it but also serious misgivings about it. If the story focuses on the idealism and characters and not special effects then I think it will succeed. If not it will be added to the long list of horribly bad comic book films.
-
Major kudos for ya, striking the news before the other sites.
About the famous last blue words, I believe it was from Singer himself, or am I deep wrong? -
I hope I did not come off as picky. I only wish to protect deep throat's (whoops, i guess that was the frankenstien post)identity if that is the intent. Harry has been known to fall asleep @ the keyboard ang wake up to 400 pages of hhhhhh . . .
-
Harry I never ralized you were that in to comic books that you read them as if they were great novels. I mean internally giving them lives and voices and power. Well I take that back, I guess we all did that as kids, and for some of us childhood has continued to keep going. As for this movie Im truly interested in how they are going to costume this movie. With Superman the costume was so well known that to change would be sacrilege and the bright tights and flashing cape were accepted. With Batman the Dark Knight look was vouge and Tim Burton made Batman look so cool in his black rubber, almost as if he wore black leather like a hell's angels biker. But with X-Men there is a problem. Many know what Wolverine wore in the comics, but can this movie pull off that look without being too flashy, or will it look like that old cheesy 70's version of Spiderman, the one with Nick Long as Peter Parker and Spidey himself. I just don't know, so when production begins Harry, I'm dying to see pictures to see what designs they are using. Out.

If Dougray Scott has been cast as Wolverine, he's gonna need to start hitting the weights NOW. The guy has biceps like wet noodles. I can picture his face as Logan, unshaven, of course. But he does not have the body. Is three months going to be long enough for him to get in shape? Can we live with a Wolverine who looks like any one of us could beat in an arm wrestling contest? I don't know. We'll see what he's able to do.
-
Wolverine needs to be:
1. Tough-looking.
2. Old.
3. Strong.
Now all you guys who say DeNiro and Keitel: great, I agree. But I have another proposition.....
Jack Nicholson. Seen Wolf? Wow. Give the man claws and it is Wolverine all over. Great acting talent, looks old, tough and strong. This man is wolverine all over. Even his hair in the movie Wolf is almost the same as Wolverine's. So my list would be:
1. Jack
2. Robert
3. Harvey -
O.K. I saw twin town for the first time tonight. I was always apprehensive about watching it cause i had heard it was like a tamer Trainspotting....this is not the case....i was pleasantly supprised by Twin Town and it was not at all like Trainspotting unless you count the fact that both are british films....If you have any worries about dougray scott....they will be layed to rest after watching this...Dougray is not all muscle....this much is true....but that is his only flaw...he can get big enough in three months....he doesn't have to be deasle for christ's sake....it is a film...not a comic...as long as he is ferral as hell we should be good....now dougray was one mean shit in Twin Town...and his performance was very scarey in it.....especially when he punches that kid in the gut a few times.....I could see this guy with sharp fangs like some artists drew him in the comic....he will not dissapoint....trust me Harry....it is also funny as hell.
-
I am with LOS GORDOS on this. All you moaners should go see Twin Town now. I think it had an NC-17 cert. in America, and as a result may be a little difficult to track down, but it does prove Dougray Scott can pull off tough roles. I'am suprised if Harry hasn't heard of it, although I assume he hasn't or he would have mentioned it in the above article.
-
Once again this site has managed to get my attention on a movie more than any other source. I used to read the xmen and like us all have fantastic mental images of the characters and how they should sound and move. Dougray will pull this off no worries(if he gets in shape)but Russell is still probably my top choice. I saw Apt Pupil the other day and my appetite has been whetted and although I liked the end it was a pity the bleak ending from the book couldnt be kept. Anyway I'm off to dig out Wolverine #10 for that first Wolvie/Sabretooth clash. The movie had better be balls hard......
P.S Talking of balls hard books/movies does anyone know anything about the Green River Rising movie? I am the worlds biggest Tim Willocks fan. -
This film will work. I've been waiting too long for it to fuck up.
-
Everybody's been saying it, but Harry, you really need to see Twin Town. It's not the greatest film ever, but what really stuck out was Dougray Scott's performance. I swear, all you need do is watch this and it should allay your fears.
-
What a hell! I see all this people in the talk backs, and ask myself: "Somebody here ever read a X-Men Comic Book?" For the love God, man! McKallan is too old. How you want Wolwerine has fear of a old man like him? In the comics, his not too old. You're all forget that he back to be baby, once, and grow up again, but more young. He have 40-50 yars old, not 80! The best choice for Magneto always was Christopher Lambert! Somebody already saw Mortal Kombat? Arnold Schwarzenegger was a real good choice, too. That was be a Magneto that the X-men can be fear... McKallan? Thiat have to be a joke... Or, i swear for God, i don't spend $9.00 to see it!
-
Spoke to someone who is working on this project. The movie production could be held up a bit due to a possible strike by the Canadain actors union.
-
I think Jessica Steen would make a great Jean Gray! Check her out at http://www.jessicasteen.com/

Sir Ian McKellen is perfect for the role of Magneto, mostly because he's an amazing actor, and also, as those who READ THE COMICS know, Magneto watched his family being slaughtered in a Nazi concentration camp. If he was between 40 - 50 years old how would this be possible?!?
-
I had no idea who Scott was until this story broke. Saw the pic from Ever After that Cinescape posted; that worried me. Then I watched Twin Town, and while I HATED that repugnant piece of shit film, I was convinced by the end of it that Dougray Scott could play Logan. I have no doubts. As for the "must be musclebound" issue, hey, I wanted Robert Carlyle for this role so you can guess my thinking on it. Besides, Crowe's not exactly ripped just brawny. And if you hadn't seen LA Confidential or Romper Stomper but had only seen him in Breaking Up or one of the numerous direct to video action films you see him in at Blockbuster, he never would've been considered for Logan! As for Kitty Pride, I doubt she's in it since Beast and three of the Evil Mutants were all cut to trim the budget and allow for more character development. 'Sides, I heard Wolvie is the outsider who comes into the group in this one, not Kitty. I like the Sen. Kelly idea but hope he doesn't become the Walken/Max Shreck of this film. Word is Jeri Ryan is up for either Myustique or Jean Grey, Luke Wilson for Cyke (good choice), Alicia Witt from Urban Legend for Jean Grey, and Rachel Leigh Cook for Rogue. No word on Storm but it ain't Angela Bassett. I still fear this production could collapse at any moment; adding a strike to it only makes things more grim. And let's hope Fox doesn't can Singer because he wouldn't hire Brad Pitt for Logan like they wanted, or so the rumor goes ...

Hello?
-
The only way this film will work is if Singer forgets about 'Suoerman' and 'Batman' an focuses on the one true Marvel Movie ever made; Conan the Barbarian. Yeah, you might laugh, but remember; the reason that movie was a hit was that the filmakers REALLY got wild when they made the movie. No goofy comic book costumes, fake looking weapons, not even a John Williams soundtrack!(just kidding) My point is that the reason Marvel movies have failed at the box office is becuase they tried to make films like their Distinguished Competition. DC's characters have stories that have almost fairy tale rings to them. Marvel's stories are rooted in deep sci fi and are generally much more tragic. Basicaly, if DC is Will Smith then Marvel is Jay-Z, or for you Rock heads, DC was Dave Mathews while Marvel was Nirvana.
If Singer realizes that he should get wild with the movie then it will be a hit. -
God I hate Hollywood. Let's go grab two of the best actors we have right now...Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellan...and let's go pair 'em up with a freaking WRESTLER??? What the Hell? We havbe actors who could play Wolverine...Clancy Brown (from the Highlander) could do it..or, .on a Slimfast plan, Rutger Hauer could do it. A freaking WRESTLER?? I should expect worse from a town without shame, I suppose. And I am sure Dougray Scott is a great actor...BUT WOLVERINE LOOKS LIKE HE'S ABOUT 50.
He's supposed to be the bitter pissed off old man who chases you off his lawn. Mel would've been perfect. Russell Crowe would've been great. The part won't work with one of this hip fresh teeny bopper pretty boy actors. I mean Wolverine plays cards with NICK FREAKIN' FURY for christ's sake! He's that old, he's known Nick Fury forever. NICK FURY, who fought the Red Skull in WWII. This movie may be a good MOVIE, but I don't think comic fans should see it. Let the movie bring in new fans to the comic...because people who follow the X-Men are gonna hate this. But I seriously don't believe there was any way to avoid that. End Transmission. -
Im sick of hearing about you guys whine about how the actors look and how old they are. That kind of stuff is opened to interpretation. I'm looking forward to seeing what singer has. If Phantom menance has shown us anythign its that characters cant be reduced to action figures.
-
I never expected much from this movie anyway. the only problem I have is its going to ruin the Wolverine character for movies the way Punisher was ruined. So then they can't make the movie that really should be made, Wolverine. I never seen Twin Town so maybe this Dougray dude is a bad mutha. But he's still 6 feet tall, according to some site I saw, and in his twenties or something. And he's not the only problem this movie is going to have. There's just too much by god! Too many characters, too much backstory to tell. Too much everything. Alas.
-
ok this is going to suck, not Gremlins 3
-
A few things have been pointed out here,a nd a few others should be emphasized. Ian McKellan is a good (though I wouldn't go so far as to say great, because he doesn't have the physique I'd like to see on Magneto) choice. He IS the right age - remember, our heroes are getting older (but Wolvie is NOT 50+! Late 30s at most). As it was pointed out earlier, Magnus watched his family die in Nazi concentration camps. That would put him at a MINIMUM of 59 years old, so mid-60s isn't out of the question.
Patrick Stewart - 'nuff said.
Dougray Scott - dunno about this. I liked him in EVER AFTER (loved the whole film), and while he could pull it off facially, I don't know that he's got the muscles and I >think< he's a bit tall for the role. IMHO, the "perfect" casting for Wolvie always has been, and always will be, Glenn Danzig - this guy was born to the part - in every aspect (voice, build, visage, height). Why Singer and Fox can't see this, I'll never know. Did he even get to read for the part????
As for the rest of the casting, I'm pretty open and flexible - but they MUST get someone who can do as good a Cajun accent as the guy who does Gambit for the animated series, for that part. (I kinda hate to say it, but Van Damm wouldn't be that bad of a choice here).
I'd like to see them do Iceman in CGI, as well as including Beast, but i think the make-up would be prohibitive for that character (as it would be, unfortunately, for our favorite fuzzy blue freak - Nightcrawler). Though he's not been mentioned as being in the script, there are two names that come to mind for Colossus - Arnie and Dolph. Needless to say, Arnie's probably out of the running on this one, but i think they could get Dolph (let's face it, when was his last hit?)
I like the idea of Jeri Ryan as Mystique. And here's a bit of an off-the-wall idea for Jean Grey - Robie (remember the cute redhead from the FRIDAY The 13TH TV series?)
I sincerely hope that the final version of the script has what is lacking in the vast majority of garbage released by Hollyweird - characterization and PLOT!!! Too often in the past, Marvel has gone for the quick cash of the licensing and we've gotten schlock like THE PUNISHER (sorry, people, I STILL liked the 21st Century version of CAPTAIN AMERICA - it was a bit campy and lacked a few production values due to the budget, but it DID have characterization and I liked the plot).
A great adaptation for the X-MEN would have been the Graphic Novel "GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS" - that was a truly powerful story and would cut right through to the hearts of most viewers (if you haven't read it, do what you can to get a copy of it!!!)
Just a few random thoughts :c) -
As someone before tried to say, MAGNETO IS NOT IN HIS 60'S, HE WAS REDUCED TO A BABY, AND HAS GROWN UP AGAIN! There, and while i'm on the subject, Xavier's not that old either, he's prematurely bald. The best choice for Prof. X would be Ed Harris, IMHO. Wolvie: Nicholson. By the way, Magneto's hair is prematurely white as well. Casting Stewart was a mistake, sure he's not bad, but shelling out the bucks to someone just because he's bald is stupid.
-
Here are a couple of good links. I mentioned earlier about the voice casting for the animated series - I had no idea that Gambit was done by none other than Chris (Silk Stalkings, KungFu: The Legend Continues) Potter! I also like the idea of Harry Connick Jr in the role. Check out these other sites for additional details:
An Unoffical X-Men Movie Page - http://members.xoom.com/thexmenmovie/xmen.htm and the X-Men movie Cast page - http://members.tripod.com/mck84/Xcast.html
Interesting stuff and some decent pics of Tyler Mane (SaberTooth) - I think it looks like he could pull it off (depending on the acting ability). But in defense of wrestlers (several of which I have tentatively cast in one of my scripts - yes, it's legit), a big part of their job IS acting.

Be honest! Who else could possibly play the role of Storm as perfectly as Angela E. Bassett? If you've ever seen her in Waiting to Exhale you'd see she can be very emotional. If you've ever seen her in Strange Days you'd see she's trained in martial arts very well. If you've ever seen her in How Stella Got Her Groove Back you'd see that she has the perfect body (not too muscular either and no flab). If you've seen her in any movie you'd see that she can act. Be honest! All the other actresses mentioned to play this role is a one charactered actress. Vanessa Williams is the snobby, white-wannabe, non-acting bitchy type femme. Have you even seen Vanessa Williams in a bathing suit? I have and it ain't a pretty sight. Having two kids really show on her gut. Vivica has gotten a little heavy since Independence Day and her acting is more of a ghetto, playful type person. Don't get me wrong! Vivica can act, but certain actors are meant to play certain roles. When you picture an actress to play Storm, think of her past roles. And so many are complaining about Angie's age. To be honest, I always thought that Storm was in her mid to late thirties on the show. She has the mature, mother-like stature and Angie does too. Besides, I'm sure fans of the serious don't mind the age difference. They want someone who makes Storm a believable character and Angela Bassett is the one to do. She has those fiery, squented eyes like Storm. She has Storm's body. She has the voice. And when you think about it, Storm doesn't have to look African because she's really American. Remember that she was born in NY and moved to Africa. Isn't it wierd how Angela Bassett was also born in NY, NY like Storm? Think about it! Think real hard. And don't go on the pictures that you see of Angela Bassett on a website that asks who should play Storm. A lot of those pictures that they have of her aren't too good. Trust me when I say that Angie is perfect for this film. She was born to play it. And to be fair, if you want a substitute in case Angela Bassett is still working on "Shaft"(which she has a small role in "surprised?")Garcelle from the Jamie Foxx Show can take over the role. Think real hard about this. I'm very open-minded. My interest isn't too much into the casting of other characters because I'm not as into them, but trust me on Ororo "Storm" Munroe. Angela Evelyn Bassett is she.
-
I know nobody's going to remember this show but CBS' Sweating Bullets featured an actor named Rob Stewart who would have made a perferct Wolverine. But as a no name (i think he's only done a handful of television work) he just doesn't stand a chance. As for Magneto, Ian seems like a great choice. There is no reason why he should have a muscular build, he's the master of magnatism for god's sake. if you could lift things by just using your mind would you spend hours in the gym? For Cyclops, i'd have to go with the guy who plays Fraiser on Due South. Perfect look, and acting style

of mentioning actors for roles who can't seem to get a job selling dog food let alone topline a major studio release like X-Men? It's so inane. None of the actors who are perpetually mentioned on these posts (Ironside, Clancy Brown, Michael Biehn - I won't even discuss Danzig!) have any "heat" to them whereas Scott is an up and comer. And, please, Nicholson or Keitel? C'mon, Fox is not going to cast a pot-bellied sixty year old as their top marketing tie-in character! Jesus, common sense, people! And as for the X-Men backstories, who cares if Magneto was regrown as fetus or whatever that assinine plotline was?! In two years time when Marvel has written themselves into another corner they will say it never happened anyway! The movie-going public doesn't give a rat's ass about the comics past storylines! The only story that matters at all with the X-Men film is the script to the frikkin' movie! It's ground zero, okay?! Forget the million and one X-titles and just go with Singer on this one. And if you have nothing to contribute to the forum besides a "this will suck" with no qualifying statement to go with it, don't bother posting and wasting everyone else's time!!

Originally I had no hope for this movie. Hearing Ian is playing Magneto and Stewart is playing Prof. X I'm now very interested in this movie. I don't think they could've nailed better actors for those two parts. Heck originally I didn't even think Magneto was in this movie, but he's the perfect villain to start off an X-Men series of movies with. They need to nail right off the boat the key to X-Men being so popular, and that's the racism ideas and the character interaction. Now we'll have to wait and see if this turns out to be something worth wild and not another Punisher (they couldn't have screwed that movie up any worse then they did.)

So Canada gets to lose it's only cool. Doesn't that suck. I was pissed when he was an aussie for the animated movie, and now I guess he is supposed to be welsh :( shitty

I really don't see why this movie is getting made. It is for such a niche market, and that market will be the most likely to criticize it. I am not looking forward to this movie at all, but am much more likely to enjoy it than all of you. Much like the TPM has gotten based by its fanbase, this movie will probably suffer the same fate. The first two Batmans have been the only decent films to come from comic books, and they were bashed from straying from exactly what the comic books, er graphic novels were. Trust me when I say you will all hate this movie, and it should never, ever have been green-lighted. If you took a survey of people on the street, the majority of them would have heard of Batman and Superman, but most of them won't know or care about the X-men. Even if some people have heard about them, they wouldn't be able to name off any of the characters. Niche market, bad idea. No big name actors, bad idea (I think Patrick Stewart is a good actor, but he is not a box office draw.) This whole thing is just a bad idea, and probably will turn out an inferior movie.

I have to agree with MJbok. At first I was into it, hearing Singer was directing, Stewart and Mc Kellan were cast, but now I don't think so. The casting of slappy wussy-pussy pretty boy as the toughest character in the comics world just aint gonna work. He's too tall and too skinny. They might as well have cast Luke Perry or Ben Affleck. Both too tall. Both too pretty. This movie will suck. Let's all just keep pulling for our friend CSWOLFE to get cast as Cyclops.
-
While I am glad to have good, respected actors like McKellan & Stewart involved, I am a little worried about their ages. Especially for Magneto; He ain't supposed to be SO old, eight?
As for Dougray Scott, I thought he was good in Ever After, but as of yet I can not see him playing the Canuck Berserker...
I have no idea who the guy playing Sabretoothe is, so harry, show us a pic, eh?
Over all, I am really looking forward to this movie!
I just can't wait! -
I agree with Niels on his casting choice on Wolvie. 1)Jack 2)Deniro
3)Kietel. But as for other X-men Roles, I suggest Brendan Fraser as Cyclops. He has he rugged good looks and the talent for playing the good guy type that Cyclops is.
For Storm, I have always favored either Iman or Vanessa Williams.
And from what I understand, Beast is not in the (to quote Dr. Evil) FRICKIN' (Done) Film. I always liked Beast. Even if it was CGI, it would still be cool. Add in the voice of John Cleese and you've got Beast to a tee. And finally as Rogue, I believe several actresses can pull off Rogue. 1)Charlize Theron w/wig 2)Kari Wuhrer also w/wig. Well that's all I have to say for now...I will be back ***Disappears into the fog and swirling mists*** -
Well, I think that this can be taken as evidence that G-d does indeed exist. Of course the devil is in the details. It is possible that they could make him just another cliched maniac trying to take over the world, instead of the tortured soul who does want to make the old better.

Interesting. I don't know quite what to make of this. Personally, I am still waiting a more official announcement. A second hand connection of mine RECNENTLY said that they had RECENTLY talked to Russel Crowe in Malta, and he was saying that he was "in." Would this conflict this report of Harry's? Not necessarily. If Crowe's people demanded too much, then he could have very well *thought* that he was "in," only to get picked off, learning like the rest of us that he blew it. As for Dougray, MAN, my tendency is want to agree with the recent several posts on the board that seem to be right on the money: All this film can count on is it's given fan base, and they seem to be working hard to alienate it. I mean, is it really too much to ask that they hire an actor who is at least *remotely* the body type of the character? I am willing to *try* to give Dougray a chance, given what people have been saying about his work. On the other hand, Good God. If they are really thinking LUKE WILSON(!?!?) for Cyke, then they need to include a few pages in this script for Cyke and Wolvie to whip out their pink vinyl hello kitty purses and slap each other. I'm sure Luke Wilson can do a lot of things, but Cyke ain't one of them. THAT would disgust me. Since somebody was kind enough to bring it up, my own chances at Cyke are *reportedly* officially dead. I was told that they want a reak "name" for the part. Given that they now have some budget to work with, if indeed they've hired Dougray rather than Russel, that certainly is in the realm of possibility. I may not be the perfect Cyke, but at least at around 200 pounds of muscle, I'm not a limp noodle. And I must admit. For the audition, bumping my hair to a more Cyke-like brown, and with those shades, I surprised even myself with looking the part, then giving a very strong read. If they end up casting a real man for the part who's also a name, I'm cool with it, if that's the way they wanna go. But good God. If they hire another boy-child 155 pound wuss to do a man's job, then like it has been said, you can count out a lot of people having any interest in the film, myself included. I would like to like what Bryan Singer and company are doing, and they're making it very hard. Oh ... and somebody *please* remind me not to bust my ass every f'ing week at the gym, because apparently, it does not really matter, even when it *should* -- I mean, really, has there any been any rumors of somebody up for Cyke who does not have the body of a 14 year old girl? If it is to be believed, Singer at one time wanted ETHAN HAWKE(!?!?) If any real man has been *seriously* considred for Cyke, nobody's brought it to my attention. Wait and see.

And why does he think he can play Cyke? What have you been in and why are these people rooting for him? No offense Mr. Wolfe but just why the hell would someone go to see a movie you're in? At least with Luke Wilson the marketing people can tie him in w/Home Fries. Dougray Scott's got heat building around him because he was signed for MI2 right after Cruise was. The X-Men producers and Singer are apparently going with actors with a moderate amount of name value. Why act like such a sore loser when it's obvious a complete unknown isn't going to be cast? That's up there with those posters who think Danzig and Rutger Hauer and Michael Biehn should star in it. Like that would happen in a million years! JUST WHO THE HELL WOULD GO SEE (or more likely rent!) ANY MOVIE THAT HAD THOSE 3 ACTORS IN IT? Nobody would!! Wish you all the best, Mr. Wolfe, I truly do but c'mon and get real. Take care.

RE Dougray Scott as Wolverine. No, I can't see him as the Canadain mutant either, but let me tell you a story about expectations. On the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the part of the main villain was played by Harry Groener. MAyor Wilkins (his character) was kindly in manner -- almost BArry Bostwick's character from Spin City as a villain. Now I was looking up Groener on the IMDB and found to my great and utter shock that he'd also played Ralph, the nerdy toll collector from Dear John. Anyone who's seen both shows will understand my complete bewildermen at trying to place the two characters as the same actor. But . . . he was. So I've since decided not to prejudge casting calls like this.

Will someone respond. God, I hate when you write something in vein. Do you agree? Disagree? You better agree! And what the hell is with these rumors of Freddie Prinze to play Cyclops. That'd be a real mistake. Picture him leading a woman in her thirties like Storm and Wolverine
. Big Mistake. -

I hope this film tanks and destroys the careers of all involved.
by hellthought
I wish that there would be a moratorium declared on all comic film adaptions, because they do nothing but ruin the source material. This one sounds well on it's way. I hope it runs over budget, and is so insufferably bad that it kills the idea of making comics into films for a very, very long time.
This film will be a horrible bastardized version of one of my favorite comics and I hope it crashes and burns. -
I watched Ebert's tribute to animation last week, and then something dawned on me- there should be a rule where all comic book adaptions should be animated.

Here's a response Rhyheim. Angela Bassett...while a great actress...is not the best choice for Storm. Angela is a bit butch, and while Storm is tough...she's femme. I had always imagined supermodel and sometimes actor Iman playing Storm, but she may be a bit old now. Angela Bassett is also a bit too old. Storm is not only a great leader and an accomplished thief...she's VERY enigmatic. Even when you think you know her...you find out you don't really know jack. She's worshipped as a Goddess in her African homeland. Angela Bassett...and don't get me wrong, I like her...is a bit too street butch for my liking. Knowing Hollywood, I'm just glad they didn't try to get Whoopie Goldberg to play Storm. End Transmission.

Hey, Harry! I`m writing to you from good ol germany and it

Regarding the off-handed comment: "Niche market."
There are very few people who read "Spawn" regularly compared to the multiple-decade legacy Marvel Comics brings to the table with X-Men. "Blade" wasn't even a fraction as popular as that.
The X-Men is the first comic that combined sensational art with dramatic storytelling in a fashion that appealed to both the adolescent and the adult.
It is The Franchise. Perhaps you weren't paying attention when it was revealed in the 1980's that Uncanny X-Men topped 100,000 issues per month - more than any other comic - many of which were on a subscription basis? It eventually spawned more spin-off titles than Happy Days, each successful in their own right.
I don't know what parallel universe you came from, but when I was a kid, any Uncanny X-men comic prior to issue #190 was CURRENCY.
This movie will surpass the other comic adaptations - even the cherished Batman movies - because of the nature of the comic itself. It had a storyline that was packed with dialogue, and character interaction was at the heart of it. Some of the greatest issues of all had absolutely no action in them, and were carried entirely by the storyline - an near-impossible task for any modern comic.
Do not underestimate this project, it has a very wide fan base. For example, the next time you talk to someone who's roughly 30 years old, ask them if they've ever heard of the X-Men. Don't just ask one of your friends, ask someone who you're sure wouldn't care about comic books. You'll be surprised.
PS- I think Magneto is only about 30 years old due to his regeneration, but his hair is 'naturally' silver, if anyone cares. -
How about Roy Dupuis of Nikita as
Gambit? He's french and good looking...he's perfect.
