See The Surprisingly Alright MAX PAYNE Trailer Before It Gets Pulled Down!! Moments Evoke Vintage Woo!!

Published at:  Jul 10, 2008 10:36:55 AM CDT

Merrick here...

There's a lot of nice imagery here. Will director John Moore make-up for his OMEN redux? Will Wahlberg atone for THE HAPPENING?

Seeing this has made me half-way interested in this project for the first time.

    by spencertrilby

The only question with Moore (except for the name of the next classic he'll remake) is: will his somewhat cool but highly derivative visuals seem lost in a maelstrom of shit, like ALL his previous films? Since it's a Fox movie, I won't pay to know anyway, but I wish the fans of the game won't be screwed again (Hitman, anyone?)

    by photoboy

I'm not sure if it makes me more keen or less to see the film. Wahlberg's attempts to match the Max Payne voice overs don't quite work. I think he needs to smoke a few thousand more cigarettes for that. I'll still probably check it out. I don't know what that winged thing pulling a guy out the window was about though, that's not in the games. Perhaps it's a drug induced dream (Valkyr?)

    Love the games, hate Wahlberg

    by theycallmemrglass

Well, I dont hate him but he has no star quality about him. He is boring as fuck. As a character actor like in Departed, he is ok and can be funny. Otherwise, I dont know what the fuck others see in him as a lead actor. Max Payne needs to be played by someone with more gruff, grit and limited range of acting skills because this is a fucking video game adaption so we want a fun movie. Sin City was a similar setting and done well with Rouke and Willis showing how its done (even Clive Owen who I normally cant stand). Fuck, I wish Bronson was alive and 45 years old....

    Noirish bullet time blood orgy

    by kenjinattix

That was the game in a nutshell. How you make that PG-13 I don't know. Bourne trilogy is the only action packed trilogy gave you thrills upon thrills while staying PG 13. (Casino Royale as well but thats a Bourne retread. Dark Knight poised to do so as well) Do you think Max Payne(who I love) can get as dark as the source material(Valkyrie drug induced hallucinations and subway bloodbath shoot outs) while holding up PG 13? God I hope they reconsider or at least release a uncut dvd. HOLLYWOOD STOP BEING AFRAID OF R movies. DID 300 TEACH YOU NOTHING!?!

    Source Material

    by xwoof

Hmmm . . . . hard to tell from a trailer, but that appears to bear no resemblance to the source material whatsoever. Shame, because the game was a hard-boild OTT revenge shooter which could have translated smoothly to the big screen.

If it's not Max Payne, why bother calling it Max Payne?

so an R rated gunfest can pull in an audience and the money. And I think Timur raised the bar on action visuals, which will be hard to beat. We've seen the slo-mo squib filled gun battle to death. Mr. Moore will have to have a kick ass script to make it compelling.

I remember that one of the main criticisms of both, Max Payne 1 & 2, was that the games were too short and were basically interactive movies. So it makes sense that they made a movie out of them. I also hope the movie has a non-linear storytelling. The other complaint some game reviewers had was the over-the-top noirish voice-over, which I thought were very funny.

And now, back to ADDRESS UNKNOWN...

    by zeke25:17

The trailer does look surprisingly non-sucky...much as I loved the Max Payne games (especially the sequel), I wasn't thrilled with the casting of Wahlberg as Max or Mila Kunis as Mona--much better would've been James McCafferey (who actually voiced Max in the game and looks the grizzled veteran part) and Angelina Jolie (she could've nailed Mona Sax with no effort at all). But, again, what is shown here looks promising. Go for the "R" rating, throw in a sequence that takes place in an abandoned amusement park based entirely on a Twin Peaks knockoff, and I'm THERE.

    To: Tards Re: "Angels"

    by slugbat

Those "angels" are either drug-induced hallucinations or post-modern cinematic impressionism; ie it's visual translation of a feeling or action, not a representation of reality.

You know, kind of like Snatch, when Brad Pitt is punched to the mat and is shown to be drowning underwater. There was no swimming pool in that boxing ring. Its meant to be a visual analogue.

    Duh.

    by slugbat

Yeah, I think the visual metaphor of the Angel of Death really takes this trailer into another level of something approaching originality. We've all seen windows shot out in an office before (not that it ever really gets old). Lord knows they need all the help they can get after casting that piece of wood Mark Wahlberg. What the hell do you people see in that talentless bastard?
Forgive my n00bness, but I thought Max Payne works alone? Is the perfunctory, too-powerful PC sidekick broad (she's equal to men and more -- and hot!) part of the original story or did Hollywood just shoehorn her in to appease the libs like Mr. Gun Control up there?

(As for guns...Only a fascist would want the government to have 'em all. Not to get a Rush L. up in here...that was the philosophy of the Founding Fathers and shit.)

    The synopsis on the website...

    by johnno

Could be a bit misleading... I tihnk the original game and this movie will deal with some cultic freaks and those are probably the same fucked up druggies that killed Max's wife and child in some drug induced ritual. The original game also had an overtone of something apocalyptic written all over it from the start of the worst snowstorm to ever hit the city. So the film is really visually taking Max's narration and delivering a more visual edge. I'm guessing that 'beyond the natural world' is also methaphorical for Max to confront madmen the likes of these who are too far gone into their drug/satanic rituals to be reasoned with and are beyond help or the grasp of the law. Something just unexplainable and therefore Max has to resort to the methods that he does.

Thanks for the list. There is quite a few I have overlooked ( sp Jonze and Gondry, Lyne and Parker). And I may quibble with some of your defined "talent". But back to the question of Moore's Omen. I think the most successful remakes ( Body Snatchers, The Thing, The Fly ) did more than slap on a fresh coat of paint of snazzier cinematography and modern special effects. Yes, it looks good, but it all seems a bit soulless, as though directed by a marketing commitee, than an artist with a vision. To a degree, maybe it was, since its sole existence had to do with its release date 06-06-06.

I have noticed on a lot of boards, that they don't know what the flying things are. Well For those who played the game they should realise that these are the "ANGELS", from the game when Max Payne has been drugged with the Valkyr Drug and hallucinates. With addicts to the drug mumbleing about "FALLEN ANGELS". Also many seem to compare the game to the Matrix, when it was infact in development way before the matrix. The bullet-Time and leaping sideways, is an influence from the john woo films, not the matrix.

Can't wait to see how they fumble this one

    by subtlety

Max Payne's basically got a movie-worthy plot already. If they keep the tone of the game and just follow the story, this should be easy. It looks like they got the look of it right (although, I hope we see a bit more urban grit and a little less fantasy stuff in the final film) and I have to admit, Marky Mark does sound like he's got the voice right, but from the look of things I'm not convinced there will be a story worth following. Still, definitely not lookin like the hack job I expected... perhaps there's reason to hope someone actually cared about capturing what was cool about Max to begin with.

I've gone on many murderous rampages . .

as Max Payne. Fun Shoot em up game, with lots of fun hacks and a modern nior feel. The game had supernatural undertones but stopped short of introducing any actual dark angel things that the trailer sports.

I'll wonder if like the game, Marky will eat a bunch of vicodin to get his strength back after a big fight.

This film looks at least as cool as the game and I look forward to it.

    When will studios LEARN???!

    by weskerlogan

Im sick of this fascination with PG-13 movies. Some films, I can accept being PG-13, X-Men, Spider-Man, Etc. but Die Hard MOTHERFUCKING 4 PG-13??? Really? AVP PG-13?? REALLY??

Now, Im not saying if a film is R it's automatically good (See Hitman) but at least give this a shot...Max Payne was a very violent, bloody game with an extremely dark plot. Yay, let's kiddie it up. Now...maybe it can work and make $$ (see the Mask) but this will most likely fall into the Hitman catergory of 'awesome trailer/shitty movie' catergory.

Yay, i really want to see the 'unrated' DVD..no thanks, the movie will sour on me by then.

God I miss the old days of no bullshit action movies (Predator, Die Hard, Speed, hell even BAD BOYS).

    ACTION films are for adults!

add Blade 3 as another SHIT pg-13 movie when it's source material is clearly R-rated (see the superior Blade 2). If this is the case..I want my R-rated Toy Story!

I don't mean to go off on a rant here but...

    by weskerlogan

The Matrix trilogy, 300, Wanted, Bad Boys 1 & 2, Die Hard 1-3, the list goes on ALL made money....I firmly believe if Die Hard 4 was rated R it would have grossed more than 130m or so..it's fucking Die Hard...i know me and ALOT of people I know didn't see it strictly because it was PG-13..Die Hard is one of my favorite movies of all-time and to not hear McClane say 'yippie ki-yay motherfucker' is an abomination!

    Studios and pg13

    by ribbitking

So they are convinced that the only people who go see movies are 13, the only people who play videogames...13, and that the appropriate age for seeing a movie involving a man whose wife and baby were murdered who then goes on a killing spree against the foulmouthed goons who were behind it. Loved this trailer but hearing it's pg13 is a major major disappointment.

Well, atleast it looks better than that punisher remake.

    by stalkeye

Rather have fox produce a metal gear solid movie, but after playing through MGS4, the story/cinema outdoes all videogame movie adaptations hands mtuhafuckin' down!

    Christian Slater?

    by sappers forward

Maybe I'm thinking of another game, but wasn't the character Max modeled after Christian Slater? Why didn't they just use him? Yea, I know his last video game adaptation movie was DTV and sucked balls, but I think this would have worked.
