Guy Ritchie’s SHERLOCK HOLMES Is …
I am – Hercules!!
Robert Downey Jr. is aboard to play the titular coke-craving big brain of Baker Street in Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” over at Warner Bros.
Ritchie has been polishing the project's script by Tony Peckham ("Don't Say A Word").
Ritchie's directorial credits include "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch," "Swept Away," "Revolver" and the Halloween 2008 release "RocknRolla."
The Warner project is not to be confused with Judd Apatow's untitled Sherlock Holmes comedy with Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen over at Sony, which is being written by the guy who scripted "Tropic Thunder" (which coincidentally also stars Downey).
Will another American play John Watson? Or does Jason Statham top the short list for the detective's physician sidekick?

The onslaught of RDJ being in everything....I do enjoy the guy on screen, and for many of you who may not have seen it, his stint on Ally Macbeal was the best part of that show, but I am going to tire fast of his mug on every movie poster. He has a track record of imploding when fame knocks at his door. He has had numerous comebacks, and I just hope his resolve is strong, because his run doesn't seem to be over..... crossed fingers for RDJ, seriously.

Holmes is another iconic character that already has an image in people's mind when ever you hear his name. And fucking around with the character to the point of drastically changing him is a very dangerous thing to do, regardless of the great cast that would be involved. I'm up in the air about this. Until more info is given, I'll be wary about this one. As for Judd's version of Holmes? I really don't care. I bet Holmes or Watson or both will be spouting out "shit" and "fuck" along with a scatter of "dicks" throughout the movie.

Still, Hugh Laurie would be fantastic. Timothy Spall as Watson. Don't use Moriarty, save him (like the Joker) for a sequel. And, for God's sake, it would all have to be shot on location in the UK. If there's one moment of overt CGI I would puke. Then again, if Ritchie ramps the camera, snap zooms or does his "I'm drunk/in shock" POV shot in a Holmes movie I might actually vomit in the theater.

SO Gene didn't actually play Sherlock, but did do a fairly decent send up of Holmes and Watson. As for me, the first cinematic version of Holmes was Basil Rathbone, so I'm still partial to that film series and the actors. It wasn't the "best" Holmes, but several of the films still work. Watson was comical and Lestrade was more clueless and blustering than Doyle wrote them, I feel. The Seven Percent Solution wasn't bad for a later film. I don't know, has anyone REALLY done the source material well to date? Help me out here...nothing comes to mind. Perhaps the Ritchie film will be something interesting.

holmes dosn't really look like anything, other than being tall, and that he can mask. that is why he is the master of disguises. The stories stand up and they started a type of story but they kinda cheat. always from watson's perspective so we have no idea what is happening until the end. i like depps take on the character (come on, we all know it was holmes)

i like RDJ, but as holmes? not sold on it. he's kind of a husky dude and the 'archetypal' holmeses, who for me are basil rathbone, peter cushing and yes, jeremy brett, are somewhat more aquiline and arch. if that makes sense.

Holmes has already been cast, so we can all quit playing the Hollywood version of fantasy baseball. As for RDJ, he's got the chops and charisma for Holmes, but has he ever played British before? God, I would hate to see him cop some lame Madonna-like accent for the role. As for Watson, Jason Statham might work, but it seems like casting against type. I mean, isn't Watson supposed to be rotund and nebbish (kind of the opposite of Statham)? And I agree that Richie hasn't done a good film since he met Madonna, so we'll see. As for the Apatow, Farrell, Baron-Cohen vehicle, I kind of have to give a big WTF? But I'll reserve judgment.

I don't get it. Robert Downey Jr. is awesome, but not for Holmes (although I'd love to see him play a great detective role). I can't believe that Ritchie would cast a non-Brit when there's so many great British actors that could also be bankable. I love the Hugh Laurie as Holmes idea and Gary Oldman as Moriarty is gold!!

And I just cannot get behind it. Watson...MAYBE. But Holmes...I dunno. As for the Laurie suggestion, I thought the same thing after seeing him as Gregory "Sherlock Holmes" House. (He even has a fucking drug problem AND uses a musical instrument to relax/concentrate!) That's probably WHY I don't like him as Holmes. Perfect? Hell yeah. The best screen Holmes as in the stories was Jeremy Brett in the ITV series. I love Downey Jr; a superb actor, but is he Holmes? Simon Pegg as Watson... Thought I'd run that up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it...

I think that Guy Ritchie is a really cool choice for this movie. He's shown contemporary London gangsters and 'dodgey geezers', so why not let him loose on victorian London. But for my money, I would have loved to see Vinny Jones in the role with Stephen Graham as Watson. That would be fucking ace.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention much lately. House is the number two show in the U.S. and Laurie's character is based on Sherlock Holmes. Across the pond, the Doctor Who finale was the number one show for the week, and is regularly one of the highest viewed programs every week it's aired. The Doctor is also, obviously, based on Sherlock Holmes. The public DOES seem to enjoy the character, given that there are two highly successful versions of him on the screen right now.

Remember also that Holmes and Watson are about the same age. Watson is not the older bumbling Doctor that Nigel Bruce made so famous. I think Downey will be a very strong Holmes.

and as much as I love Downey Jr. (always have - didn't jump on the bandwagon after Iron Man), I thought that the tall/lankyness was part of the character of Holmes. I think Coen is perfect for the role with someone like Ang Lee or Cuaron directing. Oh - and no Will Ferrell (unless he can pull a good subtly comedic turn).

Robert Downey has continuously proven himself to be one of the best character actors of his generation, and now that he finally possesses some Hollywood star power, they're willing to give him some actual meaty roles again. What's the problem in this? Yes, I can see how any number of people would have problems with his physical qualifications for the role, but come on, its not as if we haven't been down this road before. Bale is nowhere near the right physical stature to play Batman, but he has nailed it. Wolverine is depicted in comics as a short, stocky, runt, but Jackman's portrayal has been just about as good as one could ask for. I will take acting chops over physical "right-ness" any day of the week and I'm sure there are acting coaches world-wide that are thanking god that Hollywood is finally pulling its collective head out its ass and casting ACTORS instead of physical TYPES.

The last sentence of that Variety article says "He'll reprise his Tony Stark role in Iron Man 2 for Marvel Studios and Paramount, with Jon Favreau directing." Did I miss something? Has Favreau healed the rift with Marvel and signed on for the IM sequel? That would be the coolest news in this article!

Robert Downey is a great actor, but Basil Rathbone always sticks with me... I hope Downey can really get into the character PROPERLY. I love those early Holmes. Rathbone encapsulated the haughty London aristocrat. The repartis with Nigel Bruce is classic. I hope GR really does a good job with this.

traditionally, Holmes has been a lanky fellow. Oh sure Downey Jr isn't exactly a rail himself, but I think he could do it.
As for watson, the dude who plays Hagred in the Potter films is perfect as a Watson role. In fact, I think he already played that character in the Jack The Ripper movie with Depp. And speaking of Mr Depp, thank God this role didn't go to him. Word on the street is that it was offered and he declined. -
In the late 80s or early 90s, Public Broadcasting in the US aired what appeared to be an imported BBC Holmes program (programme?) featuring a slick haired actor who was about as tall as a stovepipe and that guy owned the character. Can't remember who that was, but he was the best. As I recall, it first starting appearing in the US as part of the tv show "Mystery" which was an umbrella name given to whatever sleuthing show was being bought from BBC at the time. It aired the Holmes show, some Rumpole of the Bailey, and then another show I can't remember the name of, but it was about a middle century herbalist/doctor who solved crimes using rudimentary (and sometimes laughable) science. I remember one show where he proved someone was a The Killer because the little flowers stuck on his boots only grew on the pasture outside the farm of the guy who Done Got Murdered.

...was the best actor to play Holmes, having done so in the Hammer version of Hound of the Baskervilles, the sixties Sherlock Holmes tv series, and again in the eighties, once again on TV. Sometimes the stories themselves weren't quite up to Cushing's own talent, but he was a superb Holmes regardless, even when he should have been a bit too old to be playing the part (when he returned to the role in the eighties).That said, you've got to give props to Basil Rathbone, who more than anyone else probably defined what we still consider the proper "look and feel" of Holmes to this very day, and everyone that has come after have a debt to pay to Rathbone in some way. And I know that Jeremy Brett, having played the role off an on over the course of a decade on British TV also has more than his fair share of fans. The most recent attempts at Holmes by Richard Roxburgh, Rupert Everett and Jonathan Pryce all fell pretty damn flat in my opinion, and I never could get used to Matt "Max Headroom" Frewer in the role in the series of Canadian tv movies that he did a few years back. And does anyone else remember the poorly animated Sherlock Holmes animated movies of the mid 80's, with the voice of a slumming Peter O'Toole as Holmes? Always thought he would have made a great live action Holmes, but it was never to be. And of course Christopher Plummer also played him twice, most famously in Murder by Decree, and he made for a fine Holmes as well. As did Ian richardson in his two shots at the role in the mid 80's.Of course that doesn't even scratch the surface on the sheer amount of times that Holmes has been played on big and small screen, with everyone from Michael Caine, who was superb as a non traditional take on Holmes opposite Ben Kingsley's Watson in the comedic Without a Clue, through to the likes of Geoffrey Whitehead as Holmes in the then well regarded, but now largely forgotten early 80's Sherlock Holmes & Doctor Watson tv series, and Christopher Lee in the odd 60's German Holmes movie (where they dubbed over his voice with another actor, even in the English language version!), a role he returned several decades later to in a pair of so-so early 90's tv movies. Holmes has also been played by Doctor Who's Tom Baker, by Spartacus himself, Charlton Heston, by the Equalizer, Edward Woodward, by John Steed aka Patrick MacNee (who also played Watson opposite Christopher Lee), and let's not forget Young Sherlock Holmes Nicholas Rowe, or Peter Cook as Holmes, opposite Dudley Moore as Watson in their comedic late 70's version. Hell there was even Return of the Jedi's Michael Pennington as a cryogenically frozen Holmes in modern times, not to mention Excalibur's Nicol Williamson as Holmes being tricked by Watson (a badly miscast Robert Duvall) undergoing therapy from Sigmund Freud (played by Alan Arkin no less) in the distinctly odd 7% Solution. And if that wasn't enough, former James Bond, Roger Moore, one time Skeletor and Dracula Frank Langella and british screen legend Stewart Granger all also took a shot at Holmes, to varying (and more often than not, poor) results.One thing is for sure, whether Downey jr works in the role or not, it won't in any way damage Holmes as a viable character, nor will it affect the chances of seeing another actor taking on the role again in the future. So given that, why the hell not? Plus which, after Chaplin back in the day I wouldn't bet against him nailing Holmes as well. Or at the very least giving us an interesting interpretation of the character. Guy Ritchie on the other hand, now he's the far more a danger of screwing this up. We'll see I guess.

I hate it when that term is used in reference to a director's re-writes. "Polish" implies "to make better", which sometimes is true and sometimes is not. Ritchie is re-writing, not polishing. Peckham's draft could be spectacular as is. And there's a chance that Guy will fuck it up with his "polish". Sorry, just as a writer and future professor of screenwriting, the treatment of screenwriters pisses me off. I know no offense was meant, but... well... dammit...

Downey, Jr. Gotta agree, Love Jason Stratham, but Jason Stratham seems a much better fit for Lestrad than Watson. You don't want Watson that makes the Holmes guy look like tiny little scrawny man. Watson's job is to make Holmes look awesome.

He's certainly got that quirky manic style and if he starts watching Jeremy Brett's "Fucking perfect" Holmes adventures and puts his own spin on that then we could have something special. Jeremy Brett is the standard

a good character actor, but he has some quirks that doesn't sparkle "Sherlock Holmes" to me. Just... don't fit. Pierce Brosnan or Hugh Laurie would be better choices. Whatever. I think Holmes is boring as hell.

MYCROFT Holmes should either be Jim Broadbent of Stephen Fry. God, could you imagine a Holmes movie with Laurie as Holmes and Fry as his older, smarter brother? The mind boggles.

Basil looked the most like the Holmes of the old drawings that accompanied the stories in their first publication. He also did the whole Victorian manners thing the best. Problem was, the productions he worked on were B-movies (except for the first two which were actually done in Victorian period). Plus, in the later movies he looked tired of it all because he was not only doing Holmes films constantly but also a weekly radio show! Jeremy Brett had the advantage having scripts that stuck religiously to the Conan Doyle stories, and the productions really evoked Holmes's time. And his supporting casts featured some of Britain's best actors. And he had a better Watson(s) too. But if the Rathbone series had stuck closer to the original stories, and stayed Victorian, then it would be a closer match between him and Jeremy Brett. One thing Jeremy Brett never did was kick Frankenstein's Monster into a pit of boiling lava though. Seriously, I'm surprised no one's thought of this yet, but Christopher Lee has to play Moriarty. Just rip off his hairpiece and make him shave the goatee, and he'll look exactly like the original Moriarty in the drawings.

This has been done in several movies, but they should have Holmes working on the Jack the Ripper case. And the real reason the Ripper is stopped is because of Holmes. But this was never made public until some "lost" manuscripts of Dr. Watson's are uncovered by Watson's heirs. The Ripper is actually a madman being prodded on by Moriarty to distract Holmes and Scotland Yard from some greater piece of mayhem the Professor is plotting. Or, I'd have Holmes tangling with Dracula. People in London start turning up dead, drained of blood from their necks. What's Lestrade to do? You could even tie Holmes in with the original characters from Dracula who were hunting the vampire. Again, Holmes's involvement has been unacknowledged until now when some lost Watson typescripts are discovered. I don't think Downey is right for this. He can do a lot, good actor, but this is a stretch. So many other actors they could use for Holmes.

but then again since RDJ is also American and doesn't resemble Sherlock Holmes one bit either he will do. Jennifer Hudson as the portly Mrs. Watson will be another gem of an addition to this hollywood movie...

Only a complete crackhead would compare a saturday morning serial popcorn Holmes with some one as magestic as Brett. Either that or someone hopelessly stuck in 1942. Christopher Lee is 100 years old !!! Is he going to play Moriarty's grandfather??? Give it up son and get with at least the latter half of the 20th century. Holmes and Watson in most the novels were in their mid to late 30's. They better not cast an old fat oafish Watson like in those fucking god-awful shitty Basil Rathbone films. Watson is the unyielding courage and loyalty in the novels. Although they got that in the Jerry Brett outings both actors were far too old for Watson. I wouldn't mind Ray Winstone or even Jason Stratham.
