MAD MEN Showrunner: Draper's Destination Is 1969??

Published at:  Jul 10, 2008 2:54:26 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

ORIGINAL POST:

The Television Critics Association press tour is underway, and “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner has outlined his long-term gameplan for the AMC flagship:

* The series is designed to run five seasons.

* The show will skip long periods of time between seasons. (Season one concluded in late 1960; season two, premiering July 27, picks up in early 1962.)

* The series is expected to take the employees of Sterling Cooper (Draper Sterling Cooper?) at least to 1969.

Which means we’ll probably see Don Draper switch to turtlenecks, drop acid and put the bone to a few damn dirty hippies!

UPDATE:

The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, added this Wednesday night:

Correction: The matter of setting an end date for AMC's critical darling "Mad Men," prompted by a quote by creator Matt Weiner at TCA about his "five-year plan" for "the life of the series," seemed clear when the story was published yesterday afternoon. From a lengthy exchange discussing Weiner's quote with AMC: "So to be clear, [Matthew Weiner] plans 5 seasons, covering 10 years, with jumps between each season." AMC: "Yes!"

But AMC now says Weiner never meant to reveal a specific timeline for the show. He meant that he plans to continue having timeline jumps between the seasons.

I can't stand the hippie mentality. Damn straight it's easy to be "peaceful" when you're high or drunk 24/7. Draper stays intoxicated, yeah, but he never wavers - keeps a good eye on things. Took a while to get used to the show, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the characters handle the Kennedy years. Would love to see Don competing for Marilyn Monroe - or maybe tied to her death somehow. LOL

    by molly_millionz

Wash, my fave shoes are Lost, BSG, Damages, Dexter as well as many others: House, Firefly, Chuck, Pushing Daisies, Entourage, Six Feet Under, Damages... i could really go on... and I liked seasons 1 and 4 of Desperate Housewives. Mad Men is more of a character study and there is a background plot regarding the mysterious history and backstory of the main character, Don Draper and how he's not exactly what he appears to be. I would suggest watching it from the first ep and hanging on until ep 6 or so to start to get a feel of Don's story. It's sorta of how like in House, the main focus is the episode's crisis (House's patient and Sterling-Cooper's client) but you learn more about the characters slowly as well.

    by gruntybear

Must everything be "amazing" these days? The word has zero meaning from its rampant overuse. Everything from this morning's taurine cocktail to whatever slam-bang blockbuster flick of the moment one's just seen is friggin' A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. We need an indefinite moratorium on this "nothing" adjective. Like pronto.

mostly with the kids shown on the show...drapers kids have to become teens...both will get mixed up in the anti war protests and will turn their back on their bs dad...draper will probably end up divorced as will most of the cast...and it will be interesting as they show the changes in the ad game, and the firm will finally be able to celebrate nixon winning

    by bungion boy

I wrote this show off last summer. I'm not sure why. The structure is somewhat familiar. You can tell it was created by people associated with The Sopranos, but the acting, writing, and especially the art direction is superb. The setting feels so authentic and detailed without ever getting too showy. I don't think I had ever seen John Hamm in anything before but he is the perfect center for this universe. January Jones and Christina Hendricks are so lovely and offer a really nice balance to the male-centric world. And I love seeing Robert Morse (of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying fame) playing essentially the boss character from his own famous show. This is an amazing show that I hope people discover and watch, just to ensure this does last for the 5 seasons it deserves. Can't wait to see what happens in season 2.

Hell yeah, Burn Notice is fucking sweet. A lot better then I thought it would be. When I first saw the previews for it last year, I thought that the main guy looked like a prick and unfunny. Way wrong, his deadpan style of delivering his lines is great. Also its Bruce Campbells best role in years, it should be required veiwing to be part of this site. Campbells character could've easily been Ash back in the day, but not in the OH Bruce is just being Bruce, but in back in his hayday he would've been an Ash type of Spy.

I was so into Hells Kitchen when I caught it season 2 now I pretty much only watch just to see how wins. BUT! This Whipeout show, even though its the knock off of Takeshi's Castle, I love it. I'm really excited to see how this dog competition show turns out, see if my dog could compete (he's the most talanted person I know). Also this, I Survived a Japanese Game Show is TERRIBLE! It should've been like Whipeout, instead they made it some lame ass survivor/road rules knock off. And no Rescue Me? I mean we get the mini episodes, but man. Rescue Me is the best show on TV.

I really enjoyed the first season of Mad Men, but for me it went from good to amazing (yes, amazing...A-M-A-Z-I-N-G) when Don Draper gave his carousel pitch. At first I agreed. I thought it was interesting to see that they didn't gloss over the true attitudes of the time. But after four episodes (I think that's how many I watched, the whole first disc anyway) it started to feel less authentic and more gratuitous. To the point where someone seemed to be having a really good time getting those little stabs in every few minutes. It's not the overall themes of the show that bother me, rather the almost subtle jabs at people that permeate into almost EVERY conversation. What should be a "Holy crap, that's horrible (therefore funny)" response eventually gets whittled down to straight laughter. "It's FUNNY to degrade women! Let's all do it!" I guess I'm afraid that the attitudes are being pushed towards acceptable when it should be the complete opposite.

If political correctness makes a person stop and think for second before deciding to insult someone because of their race, gneder or sexual orientation, then I'm all for it!"Personally, I think The Right has done a fantastic job of leading everyone to believe political correctness is this awful, oppressive entity robbing us of the right to speak our minds.

Why is Racist & Misogyny-Driven Dialogue "Refreshing"?

    by atkinson

I've watched MadMen and it's a compelling show. Yet it gives me pause whenever some person says "Oh it's unapologetic in it's racist or myogynistic-driven dialogue." Like you're worthy of an Emmy Award because some schmuck in a 1960s business suit says ni@@er or kunt 12 times.

Overall I barely ever hear anyone black, red, brown or yellow, or a woman say that bigotry or misogyny is refreshing.

Yeah, it is the 1960s; yeah, white guys did have 99 percent of the power at that time; and yeah, I'm probably gonna get shit because most talk-backers think only white guys have an appreciation of classic cinema and television. Well MadMen would get more of my support if they showed the entire spectrum of the 1960s - like for one the Civil Rights movement was in full steam, and more people were becoming aware what that would mean for the future of the United States. The year 1960 was more than just cigarettes, fucking secretaries, and three-martini lunches.

But then again you guys don't give a shit - you'll call me an "angry black man" who only yells at the movie screen during films, (another stereotype I might add).

Either that or a cult. She just get's more and more unhinged. It's awesome. Was 1969 was also the year of the Stonewall gay bar riot? Peggy might go to Woodstock and they'll watch the moon landing. Salvatore is probably going to get caught up in that event.

    by powers boothe

I hope they DON'T attempt to clumsily insert the characters into too many of the iconic 60s events. Peggy at Woodstock and Salvatore at Stonewall is a little too heavy handed. I trust the writers are smart enough to avoid a kind of Zelig/Forrest Gump thing as the show continues. I adore the show and honestly don't want the story to open up too much as it continues. Showing the "entire spectrum of the 60s" wouldn't feel natural. I hope they don't do it.

    Atkinson

    by hobocode

The show is called "Mad Men" not "1960." It's about a select group of assholes in Manhattan at a specific time and how they viewed and influenced the world. I think they do pretty good job of showing how marginalized black people were at the time considering that. Hell the first scene of the entire show is Draper asking a Black guy about his preferred brand of cigarettes and the guy's prick of a manager asking Don if the guy is bothering him. Not to mention the hushed silence whenever they get on an elevator with a Black operator. Black peopel are represented as much as they actually existed in the specific microcosm of the show--the Manhattan business world and the sheltered suburbs.
The show probably will touch on the issues you speak of more as it goes on, if it goes on. It is only 1960 after all. The issues you speak of, while in full swing, have not permeated into the protected world these people have built for themselves...yet.

    Hobocode - good point!

    by atkinson

And I do admit that (thankfully) Draper is one of the more reasonable characters of the cast. And although it would look too forced to have certain cast members - oh I don't know - meeting Abbie Hoffman, or spilling a coke on Malcolm X; I would like to see more of a gradual understanding that the world of these executives was changing.

One of the shows that use to really piss me off in the 1990s was "Friends." Apparently 6 college friends lived in this parallel universe of Manhattan that had no Latinos, very little if any African Americans, only educated and successful Asians and didn't experience 9/11. I mean, what the fuck - THEY LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY!

    Friends.

And were also able to live in giant non-existent Greenich Village lofts on the salary of a coffee waitress and out-of-work chef. Friends, although set in NYC, was clearly a fantasy. I don't mind Friends not touching on 9-11. A lighter comedy hasn't existed then that show. Let's face it. Any response they would have had to that actual incident would have probably only been insulting. And there was the "Too Soon!" factor. People wanted a break from reality at that point. Nobody watches breezy sitcoms to see them touch upon national tragedy. But I do agree the show was noticeably lacking in racial diversity and honesty.

White males who complain about reverse racism/sexism aren't victims of the PC Patrol, they're whiney pussies who don't realize that they have more POWER than other races or sexes. It's about power, not skin color or sex.

January Jones is a bitch in real life.

    by uncapie

And she could give two shits and a fuck about anyone who can't do anything for her and that includes especially you "adoring fans." What a crock! So the Dairy Queen has good looks. Big deal. Make me a shake and I'll be impressed. Looks fade with time. Personality lasts forever. How do I know this? I used to live next door to her. Not a nice person. Shallow, self-absorbed, arrogant, looks down on "de common folk" let her dog Samy die, I could go on. Hell, Josh Groban didn't even have the manliness to get out of his Porsche and open the door for her for her to get in when they were dating. She's a lot different in person than she is on the screen.

the Political Correctness got ridiculous in 2000

    by g100

I mean sure, they have a hard time getting decent jobs and all, but having the Supreme Court appoint a short bus President was the A.A.M.R. going too far with the whole positive discrimination in the workplace idea.
Now the A.A.R.P. are trying to do the same thing by covering a sad, frail, very elderly man with makeup and marching him from TV studios to very draughty town halls all across the U.S.
That poor old geezer would clearly be happier

Let this man have his diginity back! It's Political Correctness gone Mad.

New series will need a new plot driver though

    by g100

Yeah the competition between the young turk and Draper as well as no doubt increasing marital tensions will keep things moving but season ones big reveal was Drapers "secret" and it will need something else to drive the plot along this time.
It IS superb TV though with acting, dialogue and set design of the highest order.

Re: Why is Racist & Misogyny-Driven Dialogue "Refreshing"?

    by fiester

I just watched the entire Season 1 and I don't think I heard the word "nigger" once in any episode. If I missed it, fair enough.
I think your criticism is unfounded. The show tries to accurately depict the times (1960) and does so brilliantly. The contrast is often shocking in demonstrating how much this country has changed. As for it's handling of the civil rights movement--the entire focus of the show was 1960, so maybe that plot point will arise later. But I hope the show does not become and "issues" show like "American Dreams". I prefer the antics and storylines they are already invested in and I don't think they need to stoop to that kind of nostalgic didactic gimmickry to sustain this show.

the time-span changes seems like a gimmick to me

    by chien_sale

And you have a creator/writer with a short attention span. they were fine in the early 60s. the whole "stock up" atmosphere was great
