A brief piece on PICKING UP THE PIECES

Published at:  Jun 07, 1999 4:55:45 AM CDT

Hey folks, I had just signed offline. It was 0619 (AICN TIME) and I was turning off the light in my room and letting the tunes of BRAZIL send me to that big set of lines in the sky, when... the telly rings.

Only psychos and Moriarty call this late/early in the morning. So I pick it up... And listen as this fella calling himself Blake Dalario fills me in on a project he seems to have some sort of psychotic fixation on.

It's called PICKING UP THE PIECES, and is a film directed by the man that brought us the fantastic film, LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE... Alfonso Arau. Apparently the movie stars Woody Allen as a franticly unhinged man that kills his wife, played by Sharon Stone, and cuts her up into little pieces. It seems, that Woody then must go on a quest to retrieve her severed hand which somehow or another ends up in a small burg in Mexico. Turns out that some church has deemed it as a holy relic possessing miraculous powers by a nympho parish priest, played by Hector Elizondo, who seems to have a thing with Fran Drescher, an angry prostitute.

At this point the guy seemed to think someone was overhearing him and hung up. That frustrated me, so I went over to IMDB and found out that Cheech Marin was in the film... So I called up a friend who sleeps with his phone in his hand, to tell him about this insane flick, and he tells me Cheech plays Mayor Machado. The film began shooting around the first of May, and also has Kiefer Sutherland as a fat cop who used to have a thing in High School with Sharon Stone's hand...

I don't know... I've been up too late to rationally think, but I thought (if you could call it that) that this sounded cool. And the cast is just a killer, eh? Has anyone heard anymore?

    Buggin'

Hispanics are all crazy. I thought it was just the Spanish, but nope. The infection is spreading. Look at what's gotten made the last few years- Accion Mutante (all of de la Iglesia's stuff, actually), Killer Tongue, Airbag... now this. Crazy, I tells ya, crazy. I'm glad Fran will get to be funny again, though. She must have learned her lesson from being trapped in Sitcom Hell and doing Beautician and the Beast. Where's that clever lass we saw in Spinal Tap?

    yeah, i've heard it...

I keep hearing about this film, and the cast list keeps getting more insane. i know that andy dick (newsradio) is in it, along with fran drescher (nanny), kiefer, cheech, the large lady from the drew carey show, woody, sharon, and i've also heard david schwimmer is attached. i run a woody allen page, and if you go there, under latest news, there's some small bits of info on the project...www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/9542/woody.html

    Picking up the Slack

Damn, Harry...turning to the pleebs for the 411? Well, the film is being shot by Vittorio Storaro, who has quite the rap sheet on the imdb. Also Forrest Whitiker has been dropping in and out of the production office and Variety mentioned he was considering a role...so make your own conclusions there. And last but not least they are shooting up on a ranch in Santa Clarita, CA right next to a really sweet skatepark which is over-run with kids in baggy khakis...I guess none of that is really informative so I'll do a little sneaking and peeking and see what I can unearth...

    Shooting

    by dakid

Yeah, it's definitely shooting. Andy Dick was on ET, or Access, or one of those other clones. He was on the set dressed as a monk with a huge bald spot cut out of the top of his head. Fran Drescher was also on set in costume. It looked like a little Mexican town. Couldn't tell too much about it, but the cameras are rolling.

    More stuff

    by forrest

Hey, Harry, I've also been following this picture very closely and I must say everything stated in your article is quite correct. David Schwimmer is also starring in it and it really seems that with such a cast, the mexican director and a very original and interesting plot, this movie could turn up to be amazingly good. Let's see....

    What the f**k

    by princpl kahotec

This sounds like the craziest flick I have ever heard of. I can't tell if it's supposed to be a comedy or a wacko thing, or just a zany ride. Whatever it is it sure has a huge cast, and with that cast it could turn out to be absolutely hilarious. On the other "hand" the last movie I can think of with a large cast and a comedic but gruesome plot was the horrid "Very Bad Things" let's just hope this movie does not go there. Sometimes these things can be a sleeper hit, other times they turn out to be an overhyped piece of trash.

    More useless info

    by nuschool

Well, word from the set is that the show is going well, long hours but a fun shoot. They have 6 more days of shooting. I am trying to wrangle the script for ya...
