MGM Greenlights Goddard/Whedon Thriller CABIN IN THE WOODS!!

Published at:  Jul 09, 2008 11:44:02 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, who have wandered different paths since they scripted the final seasons of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" together, have a green light from MGM to make their mysterious comedy horror thriller romance "Cabin in the Woods."

Nobody's saying what it's about.

Studio chairman Mary Parent calls it "one of the most clever and original scripts I've ever read."

"It's an intense visceral thrill ride and I'll leave it at that," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It was everything you would have hoped with the two of them."

Goddard, who scripted the blockbuster action-thriller "Cloverfield," will make his feature directorial debut on "Cabin" from a screenplay by Whedon and Goddard. Whedon will also produce the project.

Whedon's big-screen writing career stretches from "Toy Story" to "Speed" to "Serenity." He also created the TV shows "Buffy," "Angel" and "Firefly," as well as the upcoming Fox sci-fi series "Dollhouse."

After getting his start on "Buffy," Goddard went on to script "Angel," "Alias" and "Lost."

The duo have also written together on Dark Horse's top-selling "Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight" comic book series.

    Whedon - never got it

    by sirloin

So I have this theory about Whedon. There are cool film and TV geeks, and there are not cool film and TV geeks. Whedon fans fall into the latter. There's this dude at my work who is fat, pale, has thick glasses, and loves anything Whedon. We both love movies. I've fucked more than three girls in my lifetime, he hasn't. He's a great guy and a good friend, but I think Whedon's sense of humor speaks to people that are smart, yes, but ultimately kind of innocent and un-worldly. My two computer geek friends find his dialogue clever and snappy, while I find it forced and precious. It's like Whedon writes his characters to know how witty they are being -- but they aren't being that witty. It's like watching a Mike Myers movie.

By including on the Whedon fan's fatness, paleness, and thick glasses, and assuming that most fans are "kind of innocent and unworldy" is grossly generalizing his fanbase. I'm a Whedon fan. I've "fucked more than three girls my lifetime" too. I'm sure a lot of others have too. And I'm hardly innocent and un-wordly. If you find it forced and pretentious, that's cool. To each his own. But that whole middle part already destroyed your theory.

    No YOU don't get it

    by cyberelf420

SirLoin and the rest of your lot. You don't like Whedon that's your prerogative. Not everybody has to like everything. Why you feel the need to insult people who like something you don't is your personal shortcoming, not Whedon's and not his fans. Your theory does not hold water as most of the Whedon fans I know are,in fact, MARRIED COUPLES. I'm sure those four women you slept with are wondering what happened to you so why don't you go give them a call and see if they care what you think.

    An easy fix for Cloverfield

    by the mothman

It should have been done in Doom-style firt person. That instantly makes it more watchable, literally and figuratively. Also, include characters who are't annoying/insipid/unbelievable. Also, stay away from a plot structure that was actually done better not once, not twice, but thrice by Roland Emmerich a decade ago (unknown entity makes varying first impression only to reveal its singular purpose - total destruction of the human race). Lastly, get rid of that Abrams guy. He's somewhere near the top of my 'doesn't deserve to be rich' list.

    by oisin5199

Yeah, 'cause Joss with his gorgeous wife and kids, from a talented family and generations of tv writers living a Hollywood dream of writing and producing what he loves would be all about innocence and unworldliness. Or maybe Sir Loin's friends are just smarter and more sophisticated than him.

    The problem with Cloverfield was...

    by cap-m canuck

they tried too hard to make it look amature... My kid could have gotten better shots. It felt like they were always trying to get the shot tilted or out of frame. It did not feel natural. Heck I've seen helmet cams that have taken better footage. That said, I really enjoyed the movie. Way off the mark for creating the Godzilla for North America.

Glad Goddard has gotten so successful...

    by danielkurland

He just wrote a Six Feet Under spec and was taken onto Buffy, quickly preceded to write almost the most episodes that season, then move to Angel, Alias, and Lost. And the only reason he's done so much and is given tons of repsonsibility on these shows after spending so little time on them is because he's genuinely a very good writer. It's nice to just see talent being rewarded.

    by dude_gimme_tabs

Speed ? Fucking Speed ? You can't give Whedon any credit for that, it was taken as an idea lock, stock and barrel from some novel about a bomb on a plane primed to go off if it goes below 35,000ft.

    by mr gorilla

...Whedon do some writing and directing? I mean, SERENITY was a brilliant film, and it's completely fucked up that Whedon hasn't directed another movie since. Wonder Woman - how the hell did THAT screw up? Bottom line is, Whedon is premium quality (while not quite the GOD that some claim) and any studio that invests in him will SURELY get their money back - if not in the short term then DEFINITELY in the long run.

    I have a theory...

    by dingus khan

...about people that trounce joss whedon. these are the people that have watched one or two episodes of 'buffy' and are confused as to what the big deal is. admittedly, there are cringe-worthy quotes from buffy, but in the spectrum of the show, these super-dorky quotes usually fit with the character. the appeal of buffy (and firefly...and, from what i'm told angel) is the journey from beginning of season to the end. i can't imagine it's easy to sustain a story arc, multiple character arcs, snappy dialogue, and still create something compelling and worth watching.
at it's best, buffy was exciting and took massive risks.
at it's worst, it was season 7, which was a debacle that i'd like to wipe from my consciousness.
people that love buffy, LOVE it. and are pushy about it...people that hate buffy will never watch it, but will continue to hate it.
*there are exceptions, of course, to every rule.*

    by arcadiands

First off, calling that quote a plant is like calling the Amazon jungle "leafy".
Second off, how can a movie entitled "cabin in the woods" be even REMOTELY original? That is such a movie cliche, that its a stage setting option in the video game "The Movies", a very tongue-in-cheek simulation of running a movie studio.

stop with all the pointless stereotyping

    by oisin5199

I don't know what wnb's talking about, but I've known some smokin' hot Buffy fans in my time. Why do people feel a need to come up with 'theories' for 'what kind' of people like Whedon or anybody else. Most of these assumptions about Whedon fans are almost always disprovable by basic demographics. Some people get it, some people don't. Attractiveness, ability to get laid, etc. has nothing to do with it.

A "Cabin in the Woods" original?

    by rock-me amodeo

All you folks who say this is so unoriginal, how can you not see this movie coming? It's going to take every premise you've seen before, and turn it on its ear, just like in the Serenity movie, when Mal tells River that something something something, and if thats what she thinks, "you better just shoot me now." She cocks the gun in his direction, and he says, "or we can keep talking."I'm guessing there will be scenes where the nubile track star actually CAN outrun a shambling monster with a machete. Or two kids are running away from a killer, and one of them starts thinking about making out, and the other says, "Screw that! We need to get us some Uzi's!"C'mon folks. This is Whedon and Goddard.

    Whedon fans.....

    by crackles

are a little pushy. Not all whedon fans of course since I don't know them all, but my brother started watching buffy and angel one year ago and he's finished them both but he still won't stop watching or talking about it! I've finished buffy and firefly and I love them both and I think Whedon kicks ass, but when I can't get my brother to watch farscape (my favorite show!!!) cause he just wants to watch episodes of angel he's already seen it can get a bit frustrating! I love you Josh-0-Rama but Chriton would totally kill angel! I know angel is way stronger but Chriton would totally outsmart him!

Maybe part of it will be musical! Or maybe in one part no one will be able to speak! Or maybe when one of them has sex, bad things happen! It's going to be FUCKING ORIGINAL. YOUR BRAIN CANNOT EVEN HANDLE HOW WHEDON IS GOING TO TURN THE GENRE ON ITS HEAD.
