FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Benching Two Players!!

Published at:  Jul 08, 2008 4:30:59 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

High school football drama “Friday Night Lights” is cutting two college-age characters, according to Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello.

Chair-bound Jason Street and hard-charging Smash Williams will see their stories resolved in recurring season-three roles, but both will be moving on to lives beyond Dillon, Texas.

(Hopefully we’ll get one last glimpse of the series’ most glorious creation, the obnoxious, wheelchair-bound Herc.)

When we last left the characters in the strike-abbreviated second season, Street had just knocked up a waitress and Smash had just decided on the college for which he would play.

Season three will air exclusively on DirecTV’s Channel 101 this fall, then the episodes will be repeated for non-DirecTV subscribers on NBC starting at midseason.

Find all of Ausiello’s exclusive on the matter here.

$19.99: Each Season of Veronica Mars!!

$19.99: From The Earth To The Moon!!

It Was $51.99 Last Week!!

While I'm sad to see those characters go, they were getting a bit tired towards the end (middle?) of season 2. As long as they don't drop Minka Kelly or Adrianne Palicki I'm happy...

    It's a natural progression

    by exie

Seriously, it's a show set in High School. People are going to grow up and leave, otherwise it turns into the bloated mess that 90210 turned into when they were all in college together and there were mafia storylines and such. They were grasping for straws with those characters after awhile. I'm glad they will wrap up their storylines and send them on their way. I guarantee both of their exits will be handled note perfect. The good news is we get another season, although I think NBC will never show all 13 episodes. All the die hard fans will get downloads of the Direct TV broadcasts off bit torrent or newsgroups and by the time NBC pulls it's head out of it's ass and airs them, most of us will already have seen them. NBC really doesn't want this show to get ratings. I know a ton of people who have fallen in love with the show on Universal HD. There's going to be a lot more fans this season than I think even NBC thought there were.

    by throwmetheidol

Some of the supposedly young characters on that show look like they are 30. Jason and Riggins to name 2. Smash worked better but I guess his arc ran its course.

Sad to see the two go, but credit goes to the creators for not forcing the stories to keep them in. Lucky me I just got DirectTV!

The secret to the shower scene

    by rev. slappy

was Kyle Chandler's reaction to it. If that guy doesn't get an Emmy nom as Coach Taylor it would be a second year of highway robbery (James Spader won last year and Chandler wasn't nominated???). It's a cliche, but Chandler can say more with a look or a raised eyebrow than most actors can do with pages of dialogue.

Let's hope there aren't any more actors jettisoned.

Their stories last season were getting tired

    by zooch

I never liked any the stories involving Smash, and the writers couldn't figure out what to do with somebody in a wheelchair. The other people; Coach, Tami, Landry, Saracen, Riggins were always much more interesting.

    Loved the first season

    by leckomaniac

But the whole Landry/murder storyline that started the second season was TERRIBLE. And then having Matt bang the spanish nurse was cringe worthy. I had to stop watching. For those that followed it until the season ended...did it get any better? Because the episodes I saw physical hurt considering how amazing season 1 was.

    HA!

    by nerdhooligan

I love that Tim Riggins is still in High School. Cutting Smash and Jason makes sense because they didn't really give them much development last season, which sucks. I thought Gauis Charles was the best young actor on the show. And, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton deserve emmys. that is all.

    by shoe1985

Many people have said the same thing you are saying, until they watch the show, then their opinions change.

As for these two people leaving, their stories are over, and their is nowhere for them to go. You can't keep Smash on because he is off to college, and the budget wouldn't allow for more cast to be added that would needed to be required. At least they will finish their arcs.

    Sad to see them go

    by my pretty pony

I like Street a lot. Smash isn't one of my favorite characters, but Gaius Charles is such a fantastic actor that he makes me want to like Smash. The worst part about these characters leaving the show is that it means no more Herc or that terrific actress who plays Smash's mom. However, the entire cast is so strong that they should be fine even after the loss of some great characters. I absolutely agree that Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton deserve Emmys. I also think Jesse Plemmons (Landry) at least deserves a nomination.

    Bring Back Herc!

    by freakemovie

Best character on the show. Street and Smash, well, that was half-expected...they were never really sure what to do with Street after Season 1 anyway, although I do like the guy a lot. But KEEP HERC!

    Smash I could do without

    by bitterman23

But I think Street, when they actually USED him, provided a lot of the "its not a show about football, its a show about people who PLAY football" aspect. His scenes with Herc and a few of his subplots on S2 were some of the show's best. But it did seem like he would get shoehorned in at times, so I guess it makes sense. As long as Riggins is still around, cuz that guy is gold.

    by togmeister

....then there's hope for us all yet. Personally i thought the whole Landry-The-Love-God plot was touching and very funny. 'What's a better movie to take a date to - Wrath of Khan or Jaws?'
