Got Gort??

Published at:  Jul 07, 2008 9:01:43 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Last week, we got our first look at the trailer for this Christmas' remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL [HERE].

The last shot in the trailer revealed a "Gort"-like robot zapping something with his laser eye.

The shot evoked this moment from the original film:

This surprised many, as a review of the remake's script by AICN's Uncapie indicated Gort did not appear in the new film.

...we do get a robot to come out of the ship. But it's nothing like "Gort" - nor is it as fierce as "Gort."

Its called the "Totem". It walks around on all fours, does its destructo-ray stuff, and stands upright like a totem pole when its finished.

...said Uncapie, whose write-up you can fine HERE.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (remake) director Scott Derrickson has now addressed the "Gort"/"no Gort" connundrum over at MTV's Movie Blog.

“It was intentional,” Derrickson said. “I certainly took a lot of time to explore other possibilities. It wasn’t just a foregone conclusion in my mind that we would be sticking to the original. I tried looking at a lot of different possibilities, worked on a lot of different ideas with artists and just always a nagging sense that there was something right about the way the original, that there was something about this alien entity choosing a human form or being in a human form that had value even by modern standards, not by 1950 standards. I also am such a fan of the original film. You have to also just have some respect for Gort. Gort is Gort. There’s no question what we designed pays homage to the original.”

...says Derrickson in THIS INTERVIEW with MTV.

Derrickson also talks about adjusting the original film's thematics to make them seem more immediate to contemporary audiences, and indirectly retaining the Klaatu-as-Christ metaphor of Robert Wise's 1951 progenitor.

First Keanu as the lead, now a four legged totem pole Gort? Yeah,I wont be watching this. What sad is,the original movie was SO GOOD,and for years I've thought it would be perfect for a sequel-not a remake. At the end of the first movie, humanity is basically warned to stop all the bullshit or be destroyed. I always thought a sequel should be about an army of Gorts arriving on earth in present day and,you know...making the earth stand still.

Or the director. And screenwriter. It should have been all Gort, all the time. Or a sequel. Some new dude comes back from the same people who came back in the 50s, and the original is treated as a historical event in the new movie . .. or something vaguely interesting. This looks boring.

I can understand the knee-jerk aversion to this concept, but let's get serious. It makes more sense doesn't it. I mean why would this alien creature, who is obviously appearing in human form as a way to not freak out us humans, have a humanoid robot?
I love the original with my very soul but for a more contemporary audience this change makes sense. I for one look forward to this remake despite my love of the original. The trailer is interesting and the cast is fine considering the robotic nature of Keanu's charcater and the immense talent of Connely and Hamm. I think this can be really good if handled correctly and it is not dismissive of the themes that make the original so special.

    Why dont people bash remixes?

    by dr. samuel loomis

I'm sick of all the people crying over remakes. I'm not saying I enjoy remakes, nor do I enjoy music remixes. But I give them a shot, there's always bound to be some good ones, excluding Prom Night, When a Stranger Calls and Japanese-American remakes. If I like the original, then i watch the remake once in the mindframe that this is another persons take on the movie, and I respect that. But what about remixes, look at this new Kid Rock crap, we need to ban crap like that. But regardless, there have been successful remakes, like The Hills Have Eyes, King Kong and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not including The Beginning.

HanCOCK had the July 4th weekend, traditionally huge holiday weekend, and got 66million.

WallE is now up to 128 million. Strong word of mouth will keep it there.

Let's see where HanCOCK is, after the word of mouth gets around.

Because if they're just sampling an original track they PAY for their SAMPLES and CALL IT SOMETHING fucking ELSE instead of calling it a remix...which retains the NAME of the ARTIST. These movie remakes use the name of a classic and do their own wank..thats FINE but call it something ELSE.

I never saw the original...should I be ashamed? But aside from the cheesy destruction stuff I think it looks promising. Keanu as an alien makes way too much sense, and the idea that maybe these aliens want our planet for themselves but realize we are destroying it is as good a motivation as any for this type of story.

Some asshole keeps trying to defend shitty movies using the BO. I hate assholes like this. First off WallE was out for one week dick head not a couple weeks and 128 is a lot fucking money in a crowded market. It also opened against Wanted which did very well too. Hancock is a piece of shit which idiots like yourself flooded into because they love Big Willy. Sure it made 107 million in 5 days but that was over the holiday weekend. Will see how word of mouth works for this piece of shit I bet it makes 25 million next weekend against three new movies. And actually Hancock cost over 170 million so I believe it was way more expensive to make. Also if you want to talk about failures it was one of the lowest July 4th outings for a big movie ever! So oops. Also this remake looks like ass. I can the suit meeting now "Well we can't have the original Gort but we have to have it... So lets make it a dog!" and then everyone blindly agrees.

Wall-e cost 180 million to make and “world wide” in it’s second week it’s only made 131 million. It hasn’t even made it’s budget back yet.
It only made 128 million domestically and it’s not like it’s going to magically go way up.
This is a punch in the nose for Pixar. There is no reason a CG film should cost almost 200 million in the first place, someone is paying way to much for a hammer.
I can see Dreamworks spending that much because they bet on hot star bankability and an expensive soundtrack, another fucking lame feature.
Don’t get me wrong I liked Wall-e, it’s like my second favorite Pixar film but don’t try and tell me the suits are happy about how it’s doing at the box office.

    remakes and remixes

    by oisin5199

Well, the proper analogy for a remake would be a cover version of a song, not a remix. A remix is more like a director's cut (or another director's cut). The cover version is someone else taking the song and starting it over from scratch, thus a remake. My attitude toward both is the same. If you're doing it just to repeat the original and make cash, it's likely going to suck (see Gwen Stefani's cover of Talk Talk's 'It's My Life'. If you have a new idea that improves upon the original idea, or makes us think about the original in a new context or from a new perspective, without completely shitting on the original, I'm all for it. The best stories are always told and retold throughout generations. The savior story (Jesus, Superman), the sacrificed god story (Jesus again, Orpheus, Osiris, etc.), warrior tales, other things like Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, Rashomon, all these stories have been told and retold. It's the approach and perspective that make them work. Just like the best cover versions of songs try a different twist on the original. Look at how Johnny Cash approached his covers. When he did Nick Cave's Mercy Seat, or Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus, it's like the song was always his. When he did Nine Inch Nails' Hurt, it raised an intense song to the level of pure transcendence. Siouxsie and the Banshees covering the Beatles' Helter Skelter in 1978 as a horror show (post-Manson). Brilliant. These versions aren't necessarily superior (though one could certainly argue that with Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'), but they offer a worthwhile take on the original. Unfortunately, the tendency for movie remakes is to go for the quick cash grab. So rarely does the remake hold up. But that's not because remakes in and of themselves are bad. It's all about how it's done. I'm keeping an open mind with this one. I just hope it's not another Wicker Man remake (shudder).

I haven't seen the original so there is no memories being raped, and if I did see it now, I'd be able to appreciate it, but I wouldn't be amazed. This looks entertaining in the same way War of the Worlds was. It's a servicable remake with the same story but with updated effects.

It's movies like these where I don't mind the remakes, current effects make these classics fun for a new generation, which doesn't ruin the old movie, it makes the old movie MORE important because it can transcend generations and be fun and enjoyable for each new one. Now THATS a classic. So I'm not opposed to this and will probably enjoy it, similar to how I enjoyed War of the Worlds. Not saying it will be a classic, but a fun event flick, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Sure the 50's original is dated but it's also a perfect snapshot of that era and a movie about basically smart, peaceful *human looking* aliens telling mankind they were on the brink of being a universal threat was pretty revolutionary at the time. This remake looks like another ham-fisted liberal twist on terrorism (I'm surprised KeaNeo wasn't being water boarded in that interrogation scene) overloaded with uneccesary "epic" cgi scenes. I fully expect this movie to piss off even more knowledgeable, passionate film fans than that brick stupid scene for scene remake of "Psycho" nearly a decade ago.

I know it's gonna happen sooner or later but I still dread eventually hearing that someone is remaking that classic 50's giant ant-in-LA movie, "Them."

And current studies show NO connection between the activities of mankind and the temperature of the earth. The fact that other planets in our solar system show the same signs of heating and cooling should be a clue that we've got nothing to do with it.

Journals do point out, however, that there is a strong connection between global warming/cooling and the sun.

When you read about the effects of global warming in the paper it is ALWAYS speculation. That is what I mean about critical thinking.

When I read the phrase "hottest year in 150 years" esp from AP, I tend to think that is in recorded years. AP was established in 1846, just about 150 years ago. So no, I will not think the earth was hotter 150 years ago, because you say so. THATS logical thinking.Deep ice core samples have shown a drastic increase of carbon in our atmosphere, timelining it at about the industrial revolution and forward. I'm not saying nature does not play a significant role, via volcanic activity, animal methane, solar flares, etc. I'm just saying you can't dismiss our role in the environment.

It's funny that you are saying that a movie that makes over $200 mil domestic is a disappointment (without factoring worldwide, which will be HUGE). Yet Indiana Jones will still kick both of their butts. Does that help or hurt your argument? Also, Wall-E's gonna get at least one Oscar. What's Hancock gonna be up for? Visual effects sucked. I can't remember any score except "Get Out the Way," and sound design was pedestrian at best. So, they will equal box office and people will forget Hancock in 2 years (like "I am Legend"). thank you sir, you got there before I did.
quite honestly, the amount of "legitimate" scientists who don't think that humanity is at least partly responsible for climate change is barely higher than the amount of "legitimate" scientists that don't believe in evolution.
the difference is, most people who don't believe in evolution and make up some awkward and spurious pseudo-scientific claims, do so for religious reasons. as for the people who adamantly ignore evidence of global warming and humanity's part in it...maybe they all just suffer from paranoid personality disorder, and therefore just want to find the weirdest explanation for anything.
in all honesty, I would LOVE to have someone do an informal study to see how many people who don't believe humanity is contributing to global warming, also believe in bigfoot and the loch ness monster. throw creationism in there too, why not.you people will be looking upon in a couple decades the way we looked at people who rallied against the civil rights amendment. apples and oranges, maybe. but you're gonna feel the same historical derision they do.and PLEASe don't respond: "WTF, ok so thinking global warming is dumb is like being racist? u r dumb!"...read what I wrote.

Since they have no talent nor the ability to create anything new they're remaking The Day the Earth Stood Still. WHAT MADE THE ORIGINAL GREAT? It was very literal. A ship landed, a spaceman came out and gave the Earth an ultimatum. Simple. Along the way he tried to learn what humans were like. The remake has thrown every single good element out the window. It is going to SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK. It already looks terrible and that's just the trailer! Kenanu Reeeves has the acting range of a dead twig with zero gravitas. No Gort???? remakes and adaptations will stay at the forefront until the audience starts spending more money on original material. studios keep making it because that is what the audience is saying they want based on what sells.

Also, remakes don't "ruin" the original films. Anyone who says that is foolish. Just because a bad remake comes out, doesn't mean the original is any worse. You can still watch those with the same level of enjoyment.

But it's true, I'm sure the studio is saying "fuck those internet nerds" when they green light these projects, they know damn well we're not the ones they're marketing it to and we're not the ones (largely) paying to see it.

You're absolutely right. Keanu Reeves is not a terrible actor. That does him a disservice. Keanu Reeves is THE WORST ACTOR WHO EVER LIVED IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF FILM AND STAGE. The people who made this atrocity should be burned at the stake and their worthless ashes pissed on by sick farm animals.

  • ... getting rid of as much of the toxins and poisonous gasses we dump into the environment would be a *good* thing - for *our* health.

Want to know how long on average Beijing Traffic Police live? That's right, not that long compared to most of the rest of us.

    GORT, defender of ANWR!

    by rickey henderson

How many more Emmerich inspired sci-fi cautionary tales must we sit through? Rickey had hoped that this classic would always be left to history as one of the films no one would want to remake because it is so good. Rickey hopes we never see a new Forbidden Planet.

To be honest i'm not big on Zombie, the only thing about him music wise I enjoy is Hellbilly Deluxe and the remixes from that. But between remixes and remakes, if I like the original, I will give the new version a try, if I like it i like it if i hate it i hate it. It's hard for me to say i dont enjoy the Halloween remake, being the original was the 1st horror movie i ever saw and still remains my favorite. Growing up I always wondered what Mike's life was like and to be honest I kind of envisioned what Zombie did. Granted there is some stuff in it I didnt like, I still enjoyed it.

I agree 100% I think you just misunderstood me, i meant i'm surprised more people dont whine these days about music remixes because many have been coming out, I can't help but hate how Kid Rock butchered Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London and trying to cram them together, god awful. But yeah, there are some bad remakes, luckily I didnt see the remake of Wicker Man, being that I didn't like the old one. I usually only watch remakes if I liked the original. But I see what you're saying.

Thanks for posting the most revelatory news accessible on this site, i.e. TOUCH OF EVIL (3 different edits and Welles' 58-page memo!). Can't wait!

In regard to the DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake, it's just another Hollywood abortion. The anti-nihilism message, flawlessly summarized by Michael Rennie at the film's fade-out, will be belabored to the point of those Sex-Is-Nasty "documentaries" that were required viewing at high schools. Watch for montages of war, the H-bomb, civil riots, et al followed by a legion of lectures. They lost me with the CGI shit. I do respect Jennifer Connelly (insisted on a breast reduction so the public would "look" more closely at her acting aptitude...she'll haave another quarter of a century of work. Bimbos like Pamela Anderson and Denise Richards? They're 15 minutes are up (hence, their desperation has driven them to really pathetic options).

Jennifer Connelly did not have Breast dedux

    by norm3

What has happened to Jennifer's ample breasts? The question is has Jennifer Connelly had plastic surgery to reduce them or just some weight loss? Connelly's publicist Cari Ross

"It's absolutely not true -- swear on my life. She simply lost weight, and when she did she apparently lost weight in her breasts as well. She's put on weight since the Oscars, and you can see in pictures taken since then that they're sort of back."

    Hey, Norm3...

Oops...I stand corrected. I'm glad that Connelly's hooters are making a comeback...happily, they're both attached to a really underrated actress.
