Must-watch!! Channel 4 Takes You on a Tracking Shot Tour of Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING!!

To promote their forthcoming season of Stanley Kubrick films (scheduled to coincide with the late director's eightieth birthday on July 26th), Channel 4 has done something quite insane. They've meticulously recreated the set of THE SHINING for a sixty-five-second, behind-the-scenes tracking shot. It's an appropriately obsessive gesture - one that Kubrick himself would've enjoyed (once he was done fretting over some microscopic piece of minutiae they either misplaced or forgot to include). The corresponding article at The Guardian explains how they pulled it off (replete with a 25mm Cooke lens). Read and marvel.
The series of ten films will begin on July 15th, with Jon Ronson's documentary, CITIZEN KUBRICK, kicking it all off. And that'll be available in the U.S. when exactly? If you've never read Ronson's "Citizen Kubrick" piece for The Guardian, remedy that when you get a chance.

Stephen King has commented on a few occasion he didn't think that much of Kubrick's vision, but Kubrick really pulled it off, where Stephen King's much more loyal ABC adaptation just kinda fell flat. "Here's Johnny!"

Pretty wild. It looks like there might be an edit between the look-a-like Danny and the woman handing over the script. The vertical line of the wall seems odd. Maybe it's just an online compression thing. Cool either way.

Barry Lyndon is absolutely mindblowing, a masterclass in filmmaking. It's still hard to get my head around the fact that the same man made Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Dr Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket. Most top directors, if they're lucky, make one masterpiece. Kubrick made around five.

that PT Anderson riffed on it for the climactic scene in his utterly mediocre There Will Be Blood. Oh, wait, both films were fuckin' brilliant. The mere fact that Kubrick chose not to go with the cheap scare of popping Nicholson out during the "all work and no play" scene (name me 5 others who wouldn't go the easy way - Spielberg sure as shit would) makes him virtuosic in the genre. Now, all those shots of chairs falling off tables, clocks suddenly stopping, furniture *yawning* shifting by itself in that bloated Mick Garris were insipid and tedious. And hedge animals by definition are NOT CREEPY. Unless of course you find plastic lawn deer and garden gnomes disturbing - which no one else does.

The Shining belongs in that fascinating category of "great but flawed" films (much like Kubrick's adaptation of Lolita). But the opening tracking shot high on the mountain roads; the little kid's tricycle riding over the different floor surfaces, each surface having a different sound; the wife's discovery of what her husband has been typing all these weeks…fucking brilliant. Kubrick was one of the greatest directors. If you haven't seen Barry Lyndon, rent it today. The scene in the barn where Lyndon has a pistol duel with his stepson? With its deliberate pace, and all its little interruptions, and sudden conclusion? That's what movies can be, but rarely are.

Will have to watch this - almost as good as the DVD extra's of the behind the scenes footage of the making of the movie Shining - watching Stanley send/turn Shelly into a nervous frantic human - to garner a grand performance - was just as intense as the movie... and as bad as one starts to feel for what Shelly the actor went through - it was by far Shelly(s) BEST performance to date. That was Stanley(s) true genius I think.

I don't think I truly appreciated it when I was younger. It's not only actually scary (rather than tense-music-and-then-psycho-pops-out jumpy), it's a very elegant film. Kubrick takes his time with the shots, and his patience pays off big time. I think the music is a huge part of why this movie works - the scene with Danny and Jack when Danny goes to get his truck is a perfect example. If you listen to the dialogue, it could be a very sweet and endearing scene. But Nicholson's performance paired with the score makes it incredibly unsettling. Manos, I used to think Duvall was just really annoying in it until recently. Now I think it's a brilliant performance. She plays the broken woman perfectly - she's just so defeated.

Not on the same tedium level as BARRY LYNDON but Kubrick obviously knew nothing about communicating "horror". His only concession to the supernatural was an allusion to reincarnation? More of his patented artificial intelligence (enjoyed THE KILLING but EYES WIDE SHUT was a beehive of pretension). I admit, I loved the book, perhaps prompting a grievous disappointment with the movie (I actually prefer the made-for-TV miniseries; more King than Kubrick). And I still don't understand the murder of Hallorann (Kubrick's perception of "shock"?). And why was Jack Nicholson allowed the liberty of mugging a la Robert Newton? (Kubrick opted to scream at Shelley Duvall, whose "Wendy" characterization is about as third dimensional as Paris Hilton). Jesus, I love CARNIVAL OF SOULS, CURSE OF THE DEMON (don't even think about a remake), THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, et al; all shot by directors who were impassioned with film (not themselves).

They remake, down to the finest detail, a series of hallways. You're given an oversize Big Wheel three-wheeler to ride, and you pedal on down each one, no sound in your ears but the wheels on the carpet, and then you make one last left turn and at the end of the hallway are incredibly lifelike dummies of those two twin girls ("Come and play with us. For ever...and EVER...and EVER...")! Or: you could pass by a series of doors, all closed, until you came to #237, which would be open. Just a crack. And it would be up to you whether or not to go inside....Now, crazy as it sounds, if that precise recreation was done somewhere close to my hometown, I would pay to check it out. One of the scariest, creepiest horror flicks ever made.

...where holding exactly to the book wouldn't have worked (in fact, it DIDN'T work, as anyone who saw the TV miniseries can attest to). Don't misunderstand: I still believe that novel to be one of the best things King ever did. As it's written, it works brilliantly...ON THE PRINTED PAGE. Translated to the screen, it lost so much power; there was nothing at all really forboding about the TV Overlook. The hotel didn't "loom", the hallways didn't seem to stretch to infinity, the "Grady" character was a joke...in fact, even though Steven Weber tried mightily, the only really scary thing in that version was the dead woman in 217...and she was onscreen for what, five minutes? (Also, whoever came up with "Kissin kissin that's what I've been missin" should be kept away from a keyboard the rest of his life...UGH.) Kubrick altered the story in many ways, true: but he kept the scope, the eeriness, the PRESESNCE of the hotel very much alive. The only thing I really would have asked him is why in the world he had Ullman refer to Grady as "Charles"; whereas the butler/caretaker identifies himself as "Delbert Grady" to Jack Torrance much later in the picture.

Second favorite King novel (The Stand is #1). I love the Kubrick version, and as I get a little older, the horror aspects of his film are actually working for me a lot more than when I was younger and only saw it for the "Boo!" scares. I like the Steven Webber TV version for a few reasons, notably that they focus more heavly on the alcholism, and we actually get the Jacky-Thing chasing Danny down the hallway with a roque mallet. Parts of the TV movie really blow chunks though.

He just wrote better back then, and The Shining was one in a record run of great novels, he was on fire for a good few years. The Dead zone, Firestarter.. instant classics. I haven't read The Shining in a long time now, I want to reread it but am almost afraid to, in case it disappoints.. but I think it will still hold up. I love Kubricks version, but it just that, a version, *his* version. Whole chunks and sub-plots have been jettisoned but I think the end result works pretty well anyway. The TV version was horrendous, i seem to remember, a blig letdown.

I saw it just once on DVD and thought so, but after reading others' impressions it's possible I just didn't "get it." Though that usually ends up being a case of what the director meant to be on screen not quite matching what actually ended up on screen.

agreement that EYES WIDE SHUT sucked. Is EYES WIDE SHUT Kubrick's best? Not by a long shot, but it is still good. The fight-while-high scene with Cruise and Kidman is some of their best acting. It is so real that it felt like Kubrick trapped them in a room for 12 hours until he got a actual couple fight out of them.

It's basically a series of anxiety dreams. Tom Cruise, after becoming aware that his wife had sexual desires for someone other than himself, goes off on a journey of sexual conquest. However, for a variety of reasons, he fails to seal the deal with any of the women he encounters. All throughout the film his identity is being questioned as is the nature of reality around him. Its basically an exploration of the realtionships between men and women, reality, dreams and idenity.

It's only the Tom Cruise factor that's keeping it out of the Netflix queue for now. Perhaps it was the hype at the time that left me disappointed. Has anyone seen Choses Secrètes? It's not great, but it would make for a good mansion orgy double feature.

If the film hadn't been called the Shining then I probably wouldn't have been as disappointed in it as I was.
Just went in expecting a decent adaption of the King story which I didn't get and the lack of the "Shining" in the film and Hallorans death were just annoying as hell.
Always found Kubricks films a bit cold and intellectual for my liking anyway. 2001 feels more like a documentary to me than an emotionally stimulating story. Spartacus is special though. -

I'm confident that the respect for it will grow over time. I think it's already gained more respect since its initial release. People expected a Caligula-like sex romp or something, which Kubrick was incapable of making. I saw it three times in the theater.

And one of the greatest things about it is that he shot the whole thing using natural light! Like, evening scenes are lit by candles. It's amazing.

Yeah, he made some good movies, the best in b&w (THE KILLING, PATHS OF GLORY, DR. STRANGELOVE). But he subsequently ground out some of the most expensive home movies ever made (THE SHINING, EYES WIDE SHUT, etc.). But someone hears the generic "genius" accolade and it turns infectious. "BARRY LYNDON is a masterpiece because...because...because...gimme a second...oh yeah, because it was illuminated with natural candlelight. Yeah, that's the ticket." And "THE SHINING was great because...um...Jeffery Lyons thought it was cool." And don't worry, there's no defense for a self-indulgent wallow like EYES WIDE SHUT: Tom Cruise would have been more at home with SPARTACUS and the whole nocturnal odyssey was 200% improved upon, generations ago, by passionate directors like Jacques Tourneur (on a fraction of the budget). But film neophytes--who have never examined Welles--adhere to trend by echoing "he was great" sans analysis. Have to abandon this talkback...IQ is dropping. I have no doubt that if some "authority" or "scholar" would define ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN THE FOREIGN LEGION as an "existenial exercise in paranoid fantasy", the fawners would jump on the bandwagon. Rest easy, Mr. Kubrick--for every detractor, like myself, you have a real intellect like "alucardvs..." (above) to defend you.

IT was the first and only film to be shot outside Kubrick beloved UK. In Ireland. It was only after that Kubrick developed his fear of flying. For reasons to this day that have never fully been explained The movie has never been shown in ireland. The movie was completed in ireland. It was never given a cinema release. and there was no premiere in Ireland. There was one in London. Kubrick never spoke about the film. I have heard that he was he and the crew of the movie, were run out of town by IRA. The security people told kubrick that to complete the film and get out. Which is what happened. He never left borehamwood again.

My love for this film goes beyond the fact that it was lit by natural light, but how the film is a 3 hour epic dark comedy. It doesn't hurt that the film is a visual spectacle, but the story is told well and the pistol duel at the end with Barry's step son is perfectly paced. The first time I saw it I was merely ok with it, but go back and watch it again, it's brilliant.

Gilkuliehe, great post. The Shining rocked so much more than the TV version. I remember when Harry had the Shining animation on the top of the page of the tricycle, riding through the hallways. I'd watch for 10-15 minutes and it would just continue riding through the hallways. Nothing would happen. Then, one day, the "girls" appeared. Scared the shit out of me, and now because Harry was the girls (although that was pretty disturbing).

Eyes Wide Shut gets better with repeated viewing. It's possible to hate the actors and love the film. Kubrick really had to squeeze the performances out of them by the sound of it, but who better than a smug 'perfect' couple to play a smug 'perfect' couple.

The Shining is a comedy, not a horror movie. Kubrick stated he had no interest in ghosts or horror and it shows. The comedy scenes work very very well, Nicholson playing it wildly over the top. As soon as they get settled into the hotel BOOM - he's gone nuts - it's all a sly joke from Stanley and it works . Technically it's brilliant, a marvel to watch, just stunning set design, camerwork - gorgeous. Eyes Wide Shut is uneven but damn it has a great downward spiral feel, Cruise at the orgy is a terrific set piece...it's not 100% successful but is a great ride.

namedropping is the last refuge of the pretentious. And calling Kubrick self indulgent is to me just a showcase of film illiteracy. I'm not saying you are, just saying that's how you appear by saying things like that. There's not a superfluous second in Barry Lyndon - it is tight as clockwork, and in addition one of the most aesthetic films ever made. You really should rewatch Kubrick, maybe you'll notice how every little detail (plot, acting, music, cinematography, editing, art direction...I could go on...) adds up to a whole, all the time underscoring the central themes. Although they are long and occasionally slowly paced, there's no excess flab on Kubrick's films. Self indulgent my ass.

You could see Kubrick's genius on display in multiple scenes. From the very beginning with the tracking of the VW Bug seemingly straining to get through the immensity of the Rockies to the Overlook, to that freaky ass Butler who liked to "correct" his family, to the I Am The Walrus dude giving head and looking at YOU. And of course, Jack Nicholson's performance, which was so good, he's been giving the same one in about 2/3 of his movies since. However, I hated how horribly wrong the rest of the cast was. Shelly Duvall was completely AWFUL as Wendy. Seeing Olyve Oyl as what was described by Stephen King in the book as a blonde haired, attractive woman took me right out of the movie. I didn't believe Scatman Crothers as Hallorran. Too old, too feeble. The kid who played Danny sucked. And little things that Kubrick screwed around with, like changing the room numbers that events happened in didn't make any sense. Killing Hallorran really upset the fans of the book. The stupid maze. Kubrick got a lot right with the film but he got just as much wrong.
