Sacha Baron Cohen As Sherlock Holmes?? Will Ferrell As John Watson?? Apatow Takes On The Big Brain Of Baker Street!!
I am – Hercules
The Judd Apatow factory is gearing up a new Sony comedy about Sherlock Holmes scripted by Etan Cohen (“Tropic Thunder”).
The untitled project reteams “Talladega Nights” producer Apatow with stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell, who assay Holmes and sidekick Watson, respectively.
(You know what's a forgotten and hugely underrated Sherlock Holmes comedy? "Without A Clue," starring Michael Caine as Watson's idiot puppet. Ben Kingsley plays the genius physician who concocted the detective and it may represent the funniest role he's ever played.)

Fuck this what about Anchorman 2
by the guy who slept through everything.
The most wanted sequel ever!?!
-
This gonna be competing with that other movie? Love all the people involved, but I'd prefer a straight take on the material.
-
...gets confused for Ethan Coen a lot.
-
I'm a sucker for a good Sherlock Holmes story. And I haven't gotten sick of Apatow yet either. Ferrell on the other hand...
-
kinda reminds me of the old old old rumors of Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy playing Batman and Robin
-
My pun typoed anyway!
-
apatow helms and directs more than i take shits. what am i doing wrong?
-
You just made the dude storm off the set of this article.
-
Talladega Nights was pretty funny, and Cohen is a riot in almost anything he does, so let's hope they have a good script and deliver a quality flick.
-
I've longed for this and yet, I just don't care.
-
I'd love to see Sascha play the role of Holmes straight and serious. He's never going to live down 'Borat', is he?
-
And Russell Brand as Moriarty? Or is that too easy? They should throw money at Gervais until he can't say no.
-
Sorry folks, but not only should comedy be FUNNY, but sometimes it helps for it to be scripted. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.
-
First Guy Ritchie, now this. Great. Just plain...hmph...
-
With a lot of humor and a little bit of suspense and action, this could be not only a great comedy but a good movie as well.
-
of Sacha Baron Cohen and of Apatow. I'm pretty weary of Ferrell's act, however. I'm not sure this is worthwhile but I'll hope for the best.
-
I'm so sick to defeat of parody and disrespect as the only form of comedy. Buck up and add soemthing to the human experience and create something iconic instead of always mocking icons and trying to tear them down. Add. Don't subtract.
-
Man....that would be a mighty painful pound of flesh!
-
...I wouldn't doubt it.
-
No offense, but either you're a Brit or you have a short memory. Ferrell started on SNL as the Phil Hartman utility-player of his era and played tons of characters. I venture he can do just about any accent under the sun. At least effectively enough for a silly comedy. I'd much rather see him stretch in this way than keep on playing the same doofus he's been 'assaying' for the last four or five films.
-
Seriously, that's your name? ...I don't think it means his stock is falling - I think he wants to be more like a Peter Sellers-style comedic actor who shows up in fun supporting roles. A little of him goes a long way, and he's better when he changes it up, so it seems like a good idea to me.
-
What a great movie. At least, that's how I remember it. Haven't seen the film in YEARS. Thanks for reminding me of it Herc. Must hunt down and see again.
-
Sacha is good casting and it would be interesting to see him play it serious. He could also probably play a really strong Moriarty. Serious evil Sacha would be fun to see.
-
Not that any of the people doing it are bad. I just think that they don't have the sensibilities for something like this. Cohen and Aptow are at the top of their games, but their game has a lot of dick jokes and Dr. Holmes doesn't remotely touch that world. Farrell can deliver very well when he's not playing another tired variation on his "Macho Idiot" or "Manchild" routine. (Like Robin William he needs someone to reign in his inner... himself.) No, I just don't see it.
-
You KNOW it to be true!
-
Is the one big problem I have with this. I'm fully on board for Sacha to surprise me with something I'd assume he'd pull off. Farrell... off of Semi-Pro... playing Dr. Watson in any capacity screams trouble to me. I have not seen EVERY Homles movie out there, but I've seen enough to feel confident that he's never shown me anything that resonates with any past interpretation of the doctor that I've seen. I can see Sacha dropping the dick joke and trying something different, but for Farrell to do anything remotely interesting with this role, would really, REALLY surprise me.
-
Not seeing the potential in this idea right now, but if there is a sudden upward tick in comedy versions of classic novels they might have something. What's next... a funny version of A Tale of Two Cities?
-
...I rather prefer the idea of Gervais as Cohen's Watson, with Ferrell playing against type as the villain.
-
...I mean, uh, Beaks. Well, time for bed!
-
so he made sherlock holmes younger brother...you dont turn a literary and movie icon into a joke...fuck apatow
-
little did we know it would unleashed upon us all the bianual asstastic phenomena known as "Another Judd Apatow Comedy" not to be confused with its dramatic cousin "A Brett Ratner Film." SNipers WRU?
-
I just got my results back and i am graduation. I am also developing a new definition of perfect storm: end of degree results back on the same day as the third state of origin in a tied series. expect drinking
-
...one of the most underrated movies of the last years. An excellent and hilarious satire with Sacha Baron Cohen in an Oscar-worthy performance (stole the whole thing). Read my lips, SBC is going to follow the Robin Williams Oscar route: several noms or almost noms (GG wins) till they hand it one for a just notable drama performance.
-
Another Comedy version of Sherlock Holmes...like we haven't had enough of them already.
There's a little known TV movie out there some where with John Cleese and Arthur Lowe as our eponymous heroes which was pretty funny but, in most cases, a comedy version of Holmes feels like Superman 3, its just an inappropriate style for this character. -
... The funniest line in Without A Clue, IMHO.
-
Well, I say don't forget even though it was the worst thing they ever did, then again, given the high standards of their work that could easily mean it turned out better than this will. I guess Without a Clue was OK, I picked up a free DVD of it about a week ago, but generally feature length Holmes comedies aren't a great idea. Oh, and Step Brothers looks like the stupidest movie of the decade. I mean that as a compliment BTW.
-
Ferrell needs a good role and if he can restrain himself this could be perfect for him.
-
...to see this version in production alongside Guy Ritchie's Holmes-movie. Especially if Richie's action/drama turns out (unintentionally) funnier.

Hmmm. Why don't I believe you?
Blues FTW. -
...Holmes as that's the worst idea I've ever, ever heard.
absolutely love Without A Clue btw so have no problem with this idea. -

Fuck this shit, I'll just watch Without A Clue again instead...
by sledge hammer
I wonder, will Will Ferrell be playing Will Ferrell again? Of course he will! *yawn*
-
With Gene Wilder as Sigmond Holmes. Brillant. If they can do something like that - I'm all for it.
-
do it
-
really i don't get it. he's completely unfunny. Cohen on the other hand may well pull this one up
-
Yes that film was very funny the last time i watched it 15 years ago, maybe i will have another look. I hope it holds up well
-
...nothing wrong with his comedies but he's diluting the brand. He should enjoy his money more and just make a movie every couple of years or so...
-
But I don't want the Apatow camp anywhere near it. Sometimes, they're funny - sometimes not. But I'd like to see Coen do a direct interpretation of the book.
-
Ferrell is consistently the funniest person making movies today. Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Talladega Nights, not to mention his numerous cameos and walk-ons which tend to be funnier than the entire film surrounding them in most cases.I think a lot of you haters have him confused with Jim Carey.
-
great, another classic literary figure getting the shit treatment. Sigh. and this certainly isn't the first time for Holmes either. What the hell's up with Apatow anyway? It's like the guy never rests, he always cranking things out.
-
A real period holmes movie please. Nolan to direct. Bale as holmes. Or the prestige 2.
-
I still have it on VHS that I swiped from a video store I worked in in the 80'd lol. Perfect comedy double-team with Caine and Kingsley "He was beaten to death with a blunt excrement" ;)
-
I was always really disappointed that more people didn't like that movie. I have a hard time seeing how the drastically overrated apatow and ferrell will be able to top Without A Clue.... but i'll definitely go see it and give them the chance to try.
-
I'd rather see Nolan do Bond 23, but i guess that'll coincide with his second Bat sequel. Maybe he'll do Bond 24 (in real-time;)
-
Anyone who types those two names together in the same sentence needs their hands chopped off.
-
Like most comedic actors today, they hit big early and repeat the same character over and over again in movies until he becomes a tired cliche (see also Adam Sandler). I used to rush to see his movies. Now I barely can summon the ability to care to rent them. I think Land of the Lost is going to be an abomination.
We have already seen his over the top british characters on SNL. I think they worked at times in a 5-10 minute sketch, but for a 2 hour movie? Apatow does have a lot of quality actors in his stable who might be able to pull of Watson better. Although physically he might not be right for the part, I would rather see Paul Rudd (probably the most underrated actor in Apatow's stable) as Watson. Jonas Hill would be amazing as Watson (ok, kidding). -
COuld be alot of fun but isn't someone making a big budget franchise Holmes film as well???
2009 the Year of Sherlock Holmes.
Can we clone Jeremy Brett to play Holmes in the Non apatow version???? -
Who wants to take a bet that Dr. Watson (Ferrel) will manage to take off most if not all of his clothes, stand before Holmes and make some comment about how good he looks while the "wink-wink" in-joke is that he doesn't. Sasha Cohen is doing somewhat revolutionary comedy at this point (he's kind of a modern version of Kauffman, up to a point anyway). Apatow has some ability to write funny dialog but he's no Ivan Reitman, nor Harold Ramis for that matter. Not even close (one day maybe). More like John Hughes perhaps. Will Ferrel, on the other hand, is the biggest one-trick jagoff in Hollywood next to neo-Eddie Murphy (Shrek-annoying or some movie where he plays ten or twelve roles with at least 3 or 4 in fatsuits, I say neo-Eddie as his old stand-up act and SNL work was pure genius). I've seen Ferrel do real work (Melinda and Melinda) and he's certainly capable, but he usually (always) ends up naked and screaming and there's a sport involved...or maybe some other organized...thing.And if you think Ferrell is more comedically gifted than Jim Carrey then you're just being ignorant of the past. 'Cowbell' was pure The Walken, not Ferrel. Carrey hasn't done shit in a long time comedy-wise, granted, but his comedy legacy (stand-up act, 'In Living Color' characters, and Pet Detective, all genius material and all him) and talents far outweigh Ferrel, who's inherent comedy ONLY & exclusively stems from rampant self-deprecation or aggrandizement as a comedy twist on what should actually be deprecation. Get it? Ha ha.
-
You think Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis are better writers than John Hughes? Really?
-
Actually turn out to be a doubles Tennis team that solves crime on the side! Nothing screams good time like out of shape William Ferrell playing sports!
-
Ramis is...look at their resumes...Many people think 'Groundhog Day' is the best comedy ever...Ramis wrote it...
-
The best Sherlock Holmes story ever written. Damn you Hollywood!
-
Stained Glass Man? "Young Sherlock Holmes" rules! Is it out on DVD yet?
-
Ferrell would be perfect for the role. Consider me excited. Oh, and no, I am not yet tired of Will Ferrell.
-
That movie suuuuuuuuuuuuucked
-
You think Ivan Reitman's a writer? Really? Ramis is a God, but Reitman has been an arguable waste of space since Ghost Busters. I really hope nobody starts arguing the merit of Twins in opposition to that statement though.

"...forgotten and hugely underrated Sherlock Holmes comedy"
by moonlightdrive
What a pile of shit.
-
Can someone do the sensible thing and kick Guy Ritchie off the other Holmes movie in the works. "Watson you muppet, I just told ya to slap him about a bit".
-
How sad is it that our society can't accept a Sherlock Holmes film unless it's butchered into a mindless pile of dung.
The only point of interest here is seeing Ferrell and Cohen arm-wrestle over who gets top billing. -
Some of you actually thought Talladega Nights was funny? I love a good comedy, but I swear I didn't laugh out loud once during that film.
-
Is there any update on the news that Nicholas Rowe (Young Sherlock Holmes) is going to reprise his role in a new Holmes movie??
-
For all of the film and tv heroic versions of Holmes... the original Holmes was a hyper self centered arrogant dickhead... Sasha will be awesome if he just plays Holmes the he'll written in the books.
-
I thought i was the only one who loves that movie. So many forgotten classics from the '80s. Let It Ride, Without a Clue, Dream Team, The 'burbs, Running Scared (Billy Crystal & Gregory Hines).... all winners.
Caine and Kingsley can't be beat. I don't care who they pair with Borat... -

He was brilliant as Mugatu in "Zoolander"! And Gervais as Watson would be so fuckin' incredible!!!
-
Really sick of Ferrell's "comic" schtick (equally sick of his hostility regarding "annoying fans"). The Holmes satires proved pretty lame with Gene Wilder as well as Moore/Cook. I expect no better with a hack like Ferrell.
-
Darth Macchio: Agree with you 200% (Ferrell & Adam Sandler; enough already. Sandler's LONGEST YARD pissed on Robert Aldrich's 1974 classic--worst remake ever).
And Logan1973, I'd love to see a serious adaptation of Doyle (I'm very fond of MURDER BY DECREE--hell, I think A STUDY IN TERROR is extremely underrated).
Favorite "Holmes": Peter Cushing (Hammer's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES). -
My friend told me that i can find him on "wealthybeauty.c o m". Has anyone find him yet on that site?
-
...about Reitman...you guys are correct and not in any opinion sense. Reitman's not a writer of great comedies but he does produce (management versus creative input = BIG difference obviously). In fact, he's literally, actually, not a writer at all (did he write Twins? Didn't know that...imdb credits him with production almost exclusively). So Reitman was my bad example. Apologies! But I do indeed think Ramis is a better writer than John Hughes, yes most definitely! While we're speaking of Sherlock Holmes, et al...I was wondering what everybody thought about Levinson's "Young Sherlock Homes"? I liked the movie although there was something that kept it from being great. I also must put in that I always loved Star Trek's TNG generation "Sherlock Holmes" episodes where Picard (Stewart) played Holmes and Daniel Davis expertly playing Moriarty. Good stuff all around! And lastly and unrelated, did anybody notice these "my friend told me i can find blah blah on this website blah blah" fucking spammers intruding into these TB discussions? I see these feces-shelling asshats on political sites all the time and to see them here is...unfortunate.
