Ratner Talks BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 Rating & Timeframe!! But How Many $$$s Are Needed To Drag Eddie Back??

Merrick here...
Early last month, Brett Ratner did an interview with MTV regarding BEVERLY HILLS COP 4. A particular quote in the interview lead many to the logical conclusion that the new BHC project would have a considerably softer tone/rating than its predecessors.
When asked what is biggest challenge would be, Ratner seemed to indicate that his new film would be geared towards a very PG audience. “10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”
...said THIS POST at MTV. Kellvin Chavez over at Latino Review caught up with Ratner recently & asked him about the target rating for the fourth film. He seems to have changed his tune a little, contradicting his previous quote. Ratner, in no uncertain terms, told Kellvin that the film will be "a hard core R". He also indicates an intent to shoot next year. Read more about LR's Ratner encounter...

Okay, so, now that Ratner's intent & timetable seems to be properly'll this play with Eddie Murphy? Extra's website posted a brief interview with Murphy yesterday in which he said he was thinking about leaving film & going back to stand-up after the release of MEET DAVE this Summer.
"I have close to fifty movies and it's like, why am I in the movies?" he said, adding, "I've done that part now. I'll go back to the stage and do standup."
When asked about appearing in the previously announced BHC 4, Murphy indicated he didn't want to be in it because...
"the movie wasn't ready to be done."
You can find his interview with Extra HERE. So, we have Ratner going for a "hard core R" rating & planning to shoot next year...and Murphy saying he wants to leave film & doesn't think BHC4 is ready to be made. How should such disparate infobits be reconciled? If I had to guess, I'd say both clues & resolution lie in Murphy's comment to Extra about why he signed onto John Landis' BEVERLY HILLS COP 3...
"They said this is how much we're going to pay you. I said, 'let's go shoot it! I don't care if the script ain't right."
Seems pretty clear to I missing something?

Fucking hell, it's an 80's classic that's for sure. Eddie was awesome back then in stuff like Coming To America and Trading Places, but I don't think another Beverly Hills Cop movie is needed. I just can't see it working unless he decides to change his ways and bring back the naughty! "Get the fuck outta here!!!"

I truly hope Eddie does go back to stand up. Because I can't take any more of these kid friendly piece of crap movies he's been in lately. His best will always be Coming To America. He's made some other good stuff but nothing he's done comes close to that. Life with Martin Lawrence was the most recent thing he's done that's even made me laugh.

    by fassbinder79

I think Ratner's "internet" promise may come back to haunt him if the studio heads or Murphy himself force the issue and make it PG-13. I would love to see Eddie return to stand up but I'd also like to see him do a Hard "R" action flick like the old days. I'm guessing that Ratner is talking out of his ass no this one from feeling the heat online. It really would be fascinating to watch Murphy return to stand up. I really wish that Tony Scott was directing the new Foley film though.

One More Thing I'd Like To Mention (I'm prepared to be flamed on

    by fassbinder79

Bad Boys 2 is the best ACTION film ever made...Period. I don't care what anyone else has to say about that. I love a good art house film as much as the next person but the way Bay blows shit up in that film is a thing of beauty and I'm hoping that Tranformers 2 will feel more like that than say The Island (which isn't as bad as many people say - and certainly wasn't bad enough for Dreamworks to throw SJ under the bus when it was released a pretty shitty thing to do.) I want more action films like Bad Boys 2. Ratner if you're reading this...Thats how you can win back some credibility. Bring on the non-stop action. The problem I have with Hollywood is the scripts for action films are generally shitty and then they wimp out on the action. When I go to see a romance I want to fall in love. When I go and see a comedy I want to laugh. When I go and see a drama I want to be moved. When I watch a horror film I want to be scared. When I watch and action film I want to see guns blazing and shit blowing up real good. Thats all I want. I'm guessing that very few of you on these boards have ever seen William Witney's great serials like Spy Smasher. Those films have more action in them than any films being made today and the stunts kick serious ass. I'm 28 eight years old and now I'm having to go back to films from the 40's to get my action fix...That's how pathetic Hollywood has become. The only movie that is going to live up to my expectations of what movies are all about is Dark Knight. Nolan has really been on the upswing and Kevin Smith and others referring to it as Godfather Part 2 makes me really happy. Can that movie come out any sooner? Hollywood get it together. Stop fucking around.

BAD BOYS 2 is not the best action movie ever

    by Leafy McPlantsalot

I'm not even sure it's the best Bad Boys movie ever. It's about half an hour too long. The whole taking the sister to cuba thing felt overextended. The second car chase with the bodies falling out the back felt too much. Trim the end and have it end at the mansion where it should have and cut out that second car chase and it would have been pretty great. that being said, I still think The Rock is Bay's best action movie. and best action movie is close race between Aliens, Terminator 2 and the original die hard.

    Leafy McPlantsalot

    by fassbinder79

No way, man. I love Aliens and Terminator 2. Aliens is arguably the second best sci-fi film ever made after Starship Troopers. Terminator 2 is a great film but there is no way near as much action in that film as there is in Bad Boys 2. What makes Bad Boys 2 so amazing is its non-stop set pieces. Thats what is missing from most movies nowadays. ..Set pieces. The cuba sequence in BB2 is an action orgasm. The bodies falling out of the vans is some of best anti-hollywood dark comedy I have ever seen in a mainstream film. The Rock is a great action film. But Bad Boys 2 never lets up. Thats what makes it the best. And the second car chase is amazing. No offense but it sounds to me like you don't really understand what an action film is supposed to be about. Its not about character. Its not about plot. Its about LONG ACTION SCENES.

  • July 1, 2008, 12:30 p.m. CST

    fassbinder79, you must be high

    by mithrandir16

Bad Boys 2 had some good action segments (actually blowing up cars on the freeway vs. CGIing them in later), but sucked overall. Die Hard is obviously the best action movie ever. I thought that was a given to pretty much everyone. Leafy is right that Aliens and Terminator 2 are close.

    Point Break

    by RowdyRoddyStriper

Point Break is hands down the best action film ever made. The action in Bad Boys 2 was terrible and not thrilling in the least. The foot chase in Point Break is better than all of the action in Bad Boys 2. Even Bad Boys 1 had way better action than Bad Boys 2. Bad Boys 2 was trash no matter how you slice it.

Let us not forget Bowfinger. I've never seen Norbit (thank God), but it appears his nebbish character was a retread of the nerd brother in Bowfinger. Only thing missing was Steve Martin's dialogue coming out of his mouth. THAT'S what Eddie needs is a strong script, not this "Eddie in a fat suit, Eddie is a spaceship, Eddie is covered in Rick Baker latex" stuff. No disrespect for Mr. Baker though.

  • July 1, 2008, 12:55 p.m. CST

    by RowdyRoddyStriper

You said best action movies, not just which movie has better action. As a complete movie, Bad Boys 2 is just miserable. Not well written, not very funny, LOTS of boring stretches. Point Break is a way better movie, and in my opinion, the action is better cause it is more visceral. Maybe it is the way Bay shoots, but you never feel a thing during his action scenes. The man cannot direct for his life. The only good film he did was the first Bad Boys, and it is the comedy more than the action that made that film. But I dig you putting Last Boy Scout on your list, that's a great movie. But Die Hard 2, The Rock, Rambo 4, these were just bad movies with pretty weak action set pieces. The Cg blood in Rambo 4 was so bad, and the movie itself was nearly unwatchable.

  • July 1, 2008, 12:57 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Look as I said I knew most of the people on here would disagree with me. I'm just speaking my honest opinion. And no I'm not Michael Bay. I wouldn't mind if I was though. It would mean I get paid gobs of cash to watch incredible stunts, work with some of the biggest actors in the business and orchestrate that kinds of cinematic mayhem that few people ever have the chance to create. All the Michael Bay hate is ridiculous. The guy is a beast. I may not like every film he's made but the action is impeccable and films look damn good cinematography wise. I'd like to see some of you guys and gals make an action scene as good as what he does. Its fucking hard work and its why you don't see it very often because few directors in hollywood have the balls to orchestrate it.

    sci-fi and action

    by mithrandir16

Science Fiction and Action are not mutually exclusive categories. The action elemnts of Terminator 2 and Aliens are strong enough to put them in a list of the best action films. Good call on True Lies, Rambo, and the Rock. I would put Speed on my list, especially if non-stop action is your number one rule.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:04 p.m. CST

    by bullet3

You just said that starship troopers is a better sci-fi movie than aliens. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!!

  • July 1, 2008, 1:04 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

My criteria for a great action film is the same criteria someone should have for a good porno. I watch action films for the action and the set pieces. Not the story or characters like I said. If you watch a porno film you're not watching it for the dialogue scenes you're watching it for the sex. And if it has more dialogue scenes than sex the film hasn't succeeded. That's all I'm saying. Michael Bay delivers the action in Bad Boys 2. Not in every film he's made but in that movie he does. He's one of the only directors working who delivers on what he promises...Action wise. Sure the scripts are generally terrible for his films. I won't argue with that. But he's action director and that's what he delivers. Transformers isn't a perfect film by any means but it has superior special effects and a lot more action than most mainstream movies.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:05 p.m. CST

Starship Troopers is a better sci-fi film than Aliens...

    by fassbinder79

...But just barely. Why? Because it transcends its genre and is about more than the science fiction. Its commentary on fascism and the military couldn't be more relevant.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:10 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Heat is a masterpiece. Collateral is solid. But I don't consider those action films in the purest sense. They are character dramas with great action in them. Not the same thing. For example Jonathan Demme's Something Wild has a surprising amount of entertaining action in it towards the end but you wouldn't call it an action or suspense film. Its a romantic comedy at its core and one of the best of its genre. Thats where I am disagreeing with many of you. A specific genre film should deliver on the expectations of what that genre is about. I think the scripts for Die Hard 1 and Lethal Weapon 1 are ten times better than that of Bad Boys 2. But action wise there is no comparison. Bad Boys 2 has more action and that is what I want from an action film.

The problem with Bad Boys 2....

    by neal2zod

Not sure why this turned into a Bad Boys 2 debate, but it's really not that great. It's way too long, it's main setpieces are ripped off from THE ROOKIE and POLICE STORY, and it just tries too damn hard. Like Michael Bay was so hurt by fanboys dissing Pearl Harbor that he threw in as many headshots as he could to appease people on this site, and ended up alienating everyone else. I don't hate it, though, and I'll watch it if it's on. But if you're talking the ultimate turn off your brain action movie, that's gotta be Con-Air. The Best Michael Bay movie Michael Bay didn't do.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:21 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Con Air is an underrated action film and it makes my top six. But Bad Boys 2 is still the king. PS In regard to Eddie Murphy...Tarantino should go ahead and cast him in Inglorious Bastards.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:22 p.m. CST

    The rest of Fassbinder's list....

    by neal2zod

is actually not a bad list, though I can't agree with Die Hard 2 over 1. And I can't get into The Rock b/c I liked the bad guys better than the good guys. But you can't argue with any list featuring Last Boy Scout. My list would probably look the same, except with The Long Kiss Goodnight and Under Siege 2 on there somewhere. I'm gonna get killed for that last one.

  • July 1, 2008, 1:27 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Long Kiss Goodnight is also VERY underrated. I like pretty much anything Shane Black wrote. And Renny Harlin in his prime did some kick ass genre movies including Nighmare On Elm Street 4 my personal favorite of that series. Can't agree with you on Under Siege 2 even though I'm a huge Bogosian fan. Die Hard 2 is the better film for me because it has more action than 1 and the villains are pretty fucked up in that one. Sadler creeps me out. But the first Die Hard is visually perfect and its still Willis' best performance.

Now, obviously, everyone is different and everyone's list will look a little different from everyone else's list, but if your list doesn't include two thirds of what I wrote down,'ve just got a list that isn't mainstream. But if you don't even have 25% of what I wrote, then you have either the worst taste in action films, are under 17, or are from Asia.

    Bad Boys 2

    by MCVamp

Is about as deep and involving as the old Waterworld stunt show at Universal Studios. As an "action movie" it's crap because you can zip through every interesting part of that movie on a DVD in about 25 minutes without caring about any of the other 100 minutes. That's *not* a great action movie, sorry. Die Hard 1 & 2, Under Siege, Lethal Weapon, Rambos 2 & 4, the Bourne films, The Rock, Commando, True Lies, Casino Royale, Point Break, and even crap like Face/Off and XXX have more going for them.

First Die Hard got pussified and now every action movie will. I have to agree that the action in Heat and Collateral beat Bay's stuff for me. Hell even the last gun fight in Miami Vice was well done. Bad Boys 2 had a lot of action but the violence didn't really mean anything till the last fight. The Cubans were the bad guys but yet the two big action pieces before it were against the KKK and Haitian gang bangers. It's just a random ass movie but I will say it is fun to watch.

Thats actually really funny that you mentioned Commando. I almost added that one. A definite guilty pleasure for me. Didn't put it on the list though because Dan Hedaya (an actor I normally like in everything) is extremely miscast in that film and turns in one of the worst villain performances in film history. But its one of Arnie's best films. I'm actually (dare I say it) a fan of Last Action Hero. Its a severely misunderstood film and an honest to goodness send up of 80's action film fare. I think what hurt that film was it went up against Jurassic Park which was so innovative at the time.

Other film industry friends of mine who appreciate that film are always talking about why there is so little action in films today. And now I can see why. I've been telling everybody I know, for years now, that Eddie needs to take it back to the stage and remember why the hell he got into this business, in the first place. Now, I just hope he actually follows through and makes good ... and no Bill Cosby shit, either. If he goes on ranting about his kids and making funny faces for two hours, there are going to be a lot of pissed off people in the audience demanding refunds.

XXX was a piece of crap...

    by MCVamp

But it at least pretended to be a half-assed satire of James Bond. Bad Boys 2 was just a series of action sequences that couldn't be fit into other movies wrapped around two know, like the giant mechanical spider from "Superman Lives" that found its way into "Wild Wild West." The "outlandish 80's fare" that you canonize and lump Bad Boys alongside had quirks, character, and charm that the calculated and largely uninteresting Bad Boys series couldn't muster. Rambo, Riggs & Murtaugh, John McLane, Ripley...real heroes with depth, personality, and stories that you could get behind. I'm not taking you to task for ENJOYING Bad Boys all means do so. But don't elevate trashy above classy. Most of the films you listed below Bad Boys 2 (which you specifically labeled "the best" not "my favorites" which is what started the bombardment here) make their characters more interesting via plot and dialogue in the first 20 minutes than Bad Boys 2 could muster in 2 hours coasting SOLELY on Will Smith's ability to make shit dialogue at least fun to listen to. But anyway, I'm glad you have movies you like, so have a nice day!

I'm 100% with you, but I'm really, really not sold. Eddie said the exact same thing about 8-10 years ago, that he was going to take some material to small clubs and then do a few big shows. Never happened.

    by moondoggy2u

Well, personally, I don't make much of a distinction between sci-fi action and "normal" action films, so long as the science fiction aspect (the heady stuff) is kept to a relative minimum. By that standard, T2, Robocop, and Predator are BARElY science fiction. As for Aliens and The Matrix, they were so filled with "real world" style action (marines making last stands ala thermopylae and fugitives and FBI agents kung-fuing each other) that I shoe-horned them into the list. <p>Still, if you want an action film list sans science-fiction and fantasy elements, then it would be Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, True Lies, Bourne Supremecy, The Fugitive, Rambo 2, Under Siege, Lethal Weapon 2, The Dirty Dozen, and Heat.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:07 p.m. CST

    Spencer Trilby...

    by neal2zod

Not knocking ya, but I gotta know - why Die Hard 3? It's cool and all, but tied for #1? You didn't think the last 10 minutes reeked of reshoots/test screening nonsense? It's not bad enough to ruin it, but bad enough to make it not in my top 10. #4-9 on your list are awesome, no doubt. But From Russia with Love? Of all the Bond movies to choose from, I gotta know why.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:12 p.m. CST

    by moondoggy2u

  • July 1, 2008, 2:19 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Thats a pretty good list although Bad Boys 2 would be in the place of 1 on mine and I consider Predator science fiction. I mean the "predator" in question is an alien right? But thats a great list. Like someone else said no list should not include Last Boy Scout (one of Tony Scott's best films).

  • July 1, 2008, 2:19 p.m. CST

Octogon--but isn't Beverly Hills Cop more of a comedy??

    by moondoggy2u

See, that's why I don't mind the sci-fi/action or drama/action mixes. After all, you don't seem to mind comedy/action mixes. How is that any different?

  • July 1, 2008, 2:23 p.m. CST

Heat for my money is more of a police procedural

    by fassbinder79

or a character drama than action film. The tricky aspect of classifying Heat is that it has arguably one of the greatest "action" sequences in film history. But so does Children Of Men and I doubt many people on here would consider that an action film like say Con Air or Lethal Weapon. That is the point I've been trying to make. Just because it has action in it doesn't make it an action film. Its about what drives the film forward. Seven has some great action in it too...So does Fight Club...But they aren't action films.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:26 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Your comment above is right on the money. Jack Ryan films have action in them but they are espionage thrillers at their core. James Bond and Bourne are the same thing. Spy Game too.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:26 p.m. CST

    The Genre-mixing

    by neal2zod

Yeah, i see where Moondoggy's coming from...but let's be honest here, EVERYONE's list would have T2/Aliens/Predator/Robocop if we didn't make the sci-fi distinction, and that wouldn't be much fun, now would it? Shit, Superhero movies are action movies too, and we don't need everyone putting down Superman II/Spider-Man 2. So now we can all enjoy our wonderfully diverse lists full of Die Hard Ripoffs, Cop Movies, and Shane Black movies.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:27 p.m. CST

In that case, Fass and Octagon, Beverly Hills has to go

    by moondoggy2u

Because what drives that film, more so than the action, is the comedy. Which means, of course, that Heat has to leave, as well. However, we have to put T2 and Predator back into the list, because obviously, action is the main drive of both those movies. Aliens is a bit shakey, so it stays out.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:29 p.m. CST

    action vs. sci-fi vs. comedy

    by RowdyRoddyStriper

Fass, you're making very questionable distinctions here. I could easily argue that Bad Boys 2 is not really an action movie but a buddy cop comedy with lots o' action thrown in. To say Robocop, an action masterpiece, is more sci-fi than action film is disingenuous. When i think of sci-fi Robocop does not leap to mind, but when I think action it does. Tht being said, I agree with you on Last Action Hero, it's a really good movie and is actually quite witty with some great action. I think Cliffhanger is also a great action movie. And I would agree that Heat is not an action movie. Commando definitely needs to be on your list though.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:31 p.m. CST

The reason Beverly Hills Cop can be called an action film

    by fassbinder79

is because it has as much action as comedy for film of its time. Keep in mind that originally Stallone was supposed to play the Murphy role. So, it was always intended as an action film. BHC is the same as Lethal Weapon it just doesn't have as much action. And neal2zod, Superhero films are superhero films. Just like Towering Inferno wouldn't be classified as an action film but as a disaster film like Deep Impact or Earthquake.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:33 p.m. CST

The other tricky part about a Beverly Hills Cop 4

    by MCVamp

Is that since the last one was made, Chris Tucker has made 4 action/comedies playing a smart-ass black cop in a fish-out-of-water role. And Eddie won't have Jackie Chan to provide validity to the action. Or will he? Maybe they could team him with Don "The Dragon" Wilson. Snort.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:35 p.m. CST

    by fassbinder79

Wild Bunch is most certainly a western and arguably the best ever made after Once Upon A Time In The West. But it isn't an action film even though it has great action sequences.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:37 p.m. CST

    I think if anything

    by fassbinder79

murphy made Beverly Hills Cop go from an action film to more of a comedy. My favorite BHC film is Tony Scott's which has quite a bit of action. I need to watch Martin Brest's again since I haven't seen it for awhile.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:37 p.m. CST

Damn "science fiction= ponderings or ideas"

    by neal2zod

Not knocking you, Octo, but I've never agreed with that thinking. I mean, i know you're smarter than those pretentious assholes who thinks only stuff like GATTACA counts as sci-fi. Or those pretentious dicks who say Star Wars is not REAL sci fi because it's a "western in space". (not to be confused with those pretentious fucks who say The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly wasn't a true Western because who the fuck cares). I just go by this code - if there's a fucking alien or a spaceship, it's sci-fi. If there's a robot in it or technology we don't have, it's sci-fi. Ponderings or ideas not needed.

  • July 1, 2008, 2:39 p.m. CST

Okay, so, new action list using Fass's requirement

    by moondoggy2u

that action drive the movie. This means that the movie can contain sci-fi, comedic, and dramatic elements, but action has to be the main focus of the film. That means "50/50" movies like Aliens, T2, Heat, and Beverly Hills Cop, where the other elements are of equal focus, cannot count.<p>Again, in no order:<p>Die Hard <p>Lethal Weapon<p>Predator<p>Robocop<p>True Lies<p>The Rock<p>The Fugitive<p>Speed<p>Rambo 2<p>Raiders of THe Lost Arc

Hell, I can't even imagine an older guy acting like Foley. Hollywood has terminal cancer. Explain the love for The Rock...

    by neal2zod

It's weird, The Rock shows up on alot of Top 10 lists here. Can anyone explain why? (Let's not even get into pro/con Michael Bay discussions). It's not a terrible movie by any means - the Michael Biehn/Ed Harris showdown is great, as is the Connery/Harris scene. But it's too silly to be taken seriously, and too serious to be "check your brain at the door" fun. (i.e. the villains' motive is sympathetic, which makes dispatching them in "awesome" ways not as fun as it should be) The plot borrows a bit too much from Under Siege, Escape From New York, etc.. The big car chase is HORRIBLY shot, doesn't really have much to do with the plot, and just seems like they needed to throw a car chase in there. Oh yeah, and Nicolas Cage is beyond obnoxious. The "rocketman" scene is the worst thing he's ever done.

    The Rock...

by Sledge Hammer's just a hugely entertaining film, with a great sense of energy, and also manages to maintain a strong balance of neither taking itself too seriously nor being too tongue in cheek jokesy. But the thing that really elevates it is the stellar cast line up, most of whom bring their a-game: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, David Morse, John C McGinley, John Spencer, William Forsythe, and Tony Todd, amongst others. I just find it very entertaining. Action popcorn moviemaking done right in my books, and still the best thing that Bay has made as far as I'm concerned.

    by Sledge Hammer

...the only sympathetic bad guys are Ed Harris, and maybe David Morse, the rest are mostly mercs who are mainly just there to get paid (as explicitly stated by the likes of Tony Todd).

Ed Harris aint no Alan Rickman though...

    by Alfred_Packer

Hrrm, I think with these types of films, you need a really over the top villain and one on one fight with the hero and the villain, or the lead henchman, somewhere in the film to complete the package, unless its a really iconic enemy (Aliens). The Rock is a tough one to squeeze into that mold, you cant really count Connery's confrontation outisde the prison with Harris, or the fight at the end where the merc gets the ball of green shit in his mouth. You dont really get a good villain smackdown in the Rock, good minor henchman deaths (rocketman, twitchy, ball gag, but otherwise I think Rock suffers greatly in the big baddie department, which if your a stickler for genre conventions, keeps it a low scorer for me. Not that it isnt a wonderful movie, of course.

  • July 1, 2008, 5:34 p.m. CST

and even in Aliens you get the queen.

    by Alfred_Packer

I dunno, I guess Im saying a bunch randon red shirt equivalents dying in mass quantities can be the stuff of good action films, but for the real deal, you need the extended mano y mano fight. Im trying to come up with something like that in the Rock, but nothings coming to mind.

I haven't seen Say Anything in years

    by s0nicdeathmonkey

I just remember the film fondly. My point was that there is more than your narrow version of masculinity, for which I don't think you even measure up. I don't think you'd question Forest Whitaker's ability to kick your ass, but go check the his IMDB profile and see what he's directed. I wasn't imagining you jerking off to Rambo. I'm just pointing out that that kind of film is gay porn with blood-as-cum shots. And this is perfectly fine. You should just reassess your perceived values. Gay and straight don't exist anyway, we're all somewhere in the middle. The very fact that I can deal with this probably makes me more "heterosexual" than your closeted self.

I'm just poking fun. True, I do love me some Judith Butler, but I assure you everything I've said has been in jest. And they weren't attacks on your sexuality. The fact of the matter is that gay and straight are invented terms. To impugn your sexuality would be to go against the tenants of the things that I (albeit jokingly) brought up. I have no desire to have sex with men, ever. I've never met a guy who I wanted to fuck. You probably haven't either. That's cool. It makes both of us, "straight" but at the same time, we both consciously and subconsciously get off on these images of hyper-masculinity in part because of their homoerotic nature. Again, I mean what I'm saying, but I'm poking fun too. Text is too often a poor tool for communicating complex concepts like this.

    by LucienPierce

Eddie Murphy's career been on a downward spiral since BHC3 with minor blips coming up with Shrek and Dreamgirls. (I enjoyed Metro for what it was and he was the best thing in I, Spy). Isn't it amazingly coincidental that as they start talking about BHC4 suddenly he's not interested in acting in movies anymore. Come on, he thinks he's going to pull a Mel Gibson and get paid $35m for the fourth entry of a franchise. At least Mel Gibson was still a bankable star and is still a bankable name. Murphy is not. Personally I'm looking forward to this, particularly if they go with the tone and feel of the first two. Oh yeah! And this is exactly the sort of film Ratner is good at.

You know whats funny about the whole

    by Series7

"You know, FOR KIDS!" idea, is that when you think about it, what was the most fucked up thing you saw as a kid. Probably was Alien/s, Beaverly Hills Cop, Demolition Man, Die Hard, Rambo pretty much any big hard R movie of the 70-80. And are cartoons were all Gummy Bears, Speed Racer, Inspector Gadget, TMNT more product placement then anything (Except Gummy Bears, unless it was for the candy?). The worst music we really had was NWA, or 2 Live Crew. Compare that with todays standards, the worst thing kids see today is shit like 2 Girls 1 Cup, movies like Hostel, just look at any top ten song list in the past 5 years and there is at least one or two terrible band with a song that degrads something, and cartoons that teach you nothing but to be violent...and buy shit. So in an age were kids are watching more and worse shit and hearing more derogetory stuff then most of us did as a kid growing up, shouldn't a movie for kids be a hard 'R' anyways? Kids now a days have easier access to more messed up shit, so lets piss off the adults and make one of the most 'R' rates comedians ever and make him a kids figure. By that the should say that they are making a movie for Todlers.

Where Is The Beverly Hills Cop Prequel Trilogy?!?!

    by LaserPants

Clearly this is where the saga of Beverly Hills Cop needs to go; we need to find out how many midichlorians Eddie Murphy had in his blood when he hired that transsexual hooker give him a blow job. And by "midichlorians" I mean cocaine.

The Rock better than Point Break?

    by RowdyRoddyStriper

Fass, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you were very young when you saw The Rock, for that is the only reason one could hold that movie up as some sort of action classic. The Rock is awful awful awful! And I agree with WhinyNegativeBitch, the actio is dead boring and poorly shot, but aside from that, the actual movie was terribly written and not interesting at all. Point Break is entertaining as all get out.

I realise we live in the days of seen-it-all, but it was pretty shocking to see a young pre-teenage girl violently masturbate with a crucifix and then shove her mother's face in the menstrual blood, all the while cursing "Let Jesus fuck her." Come to think of it, I don't think the board would let that scene go by unrated today. And has anyone else beside Friedkin been able to direct a film about demonic possession so effectly since?, I don't think so.

    Octa - a response - somewhat

    by toadkillerdog

I disagree with some of your choices, the others, I have no opinion on because I either have not seen them, or they never interested me. <p> 1. The Exorcist - Scared the crap out of 1970's audiences that had never before seen the depiction hidden, and mystic Catholic ritual, and in a battle against a possesed child, combined with horror and gore - at least not in a well made, mainstream movie. It still holds up very well, today, as for not being scary, well, that is subjective, but the images of Regan doing the broken back spider walk down the stairs (In the directors cut)are still very vivid. The Catholic imagery alone, for the true believers, was enough to send them to church in droves. You have to put things in context. In the 30's Dracula and Frankenstein were frightening. Now, though they are still very good movies, they do not frighten. The 70's horror was owned by Exorcist. <p> 6. Mash - Very funny, satiric and subversive flick. However, the TV show, at least the first three years, actually was even better - if nowhere near as racy. <p> 8. Dirty Harry - A true classic. Exploitation does not make it bad. It deserves the classic status. Not a great movie in terms of writing or acting. But impact was undeniable.

Needs to be an R movie, Eddie need to go back to being Eddie, not Mr. "I got caught with a tranny so now I am a family film guy" The last thing he did that really made me laugh was The Nutty Professor, and then he took the whole playing multiple characters thing way too far. Just be the Axel Foley from BHC 1&2, and have a good story. I actually like an idea that a TB'er suggested earlier, start the movie in Beverly Hills and have it go to Detroit, that would be a nice change.

    Oh, and The Conversation

    by rogueleader66

Saw it in film class in college, and honestly, the only thing I remember about it is that Harrison Ford has a tiny part in it. Otherwise, I didn't find it to be the masterpiece it is said to be, otherwise I would have remembered more of it.

I don't think that Audition fits the Torture Porn profile. Yes it has torture in it, but the movie isn't built around torture. I agree that it is one of the best horror films that I have seen in the past few years. A beautiful film. Yeah, the Kiri kiri kiri part drove me nuts the first time I saw it, scared the shit out of me, just the innocent glee of her voice juxtaposed against what she was doing. Sheer genius. Eli Roth couldn't pull that off if his life depended on it

And not doing things *just* for the money anymore. Whether one likes his recent movies or not - they strike me as he's trying to do films he can share WITH his kids, which any little ones he could't share BHC with for a while.<P><P>Will be nice to see him do standup. 'Course - why he couldn't do both is beyond me. Alternate. Steve Harvey does a daily radio show, writes books and still does stand-up tours.
