Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 1st week of July DVDs: Gangs, Assassination, Suicide, Love and Surfer Bank Robbers! A Good Week!

Published at:  Jun 30, 2008 11:45:25 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with another week of DVD picks and peeks. Some fun stuff, including a really beloved romantic film that I love that not many know. So give the list a look and remember – if you click on the box art or title, it’ll take you to Amazon where you can learn more on the title – and if you feel like it, you can purchase it there, where a small percentage goes to support this column. Hope you enjoy the list, I enjoyed making it…

MAD MEN – Season One

See – this is what happens when I get something sent to me on Blu Ray that I have no interest in. I end up watching it, cuz I’m addicted to the format, and end up discovering something that I never would have tuned in for. MAD MEN is actually about AD men from around the same time as WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER? – but instead of being tongue in cheek and goofy – it’s probably a lot closer to the reality of the period. I say that, cuz I certainly didn’t live in the late fifties / early sixties – but having seen THE APARTMENT – MAD MEN is like Rock Hunter, by way of THE APARTMENT, but with a really hard WALL STREET flavor. That they work real products and real slogans into the series is classic. Great cast – can’t wait to see more of this series – season one went by in a single night.

GANGS OF NEW YORK (Blu Ray)

It’s strange, for some reason in memory – I remember being disappointed by GANGS OF NEW YORK, but rewatching it – all I can do is love the film. I love the look and feel of the movie. I like that essentially it is just a revenge story. And oddly – in light of THE DEPARTED the film feels like a book end for this movie. I know they’re different cities, that this one has little to nothing to do with cops – but everything to do with the gangs… and really – the cops just later became the legitimate gang. But I love and have always loved Daniel Day-Lewis’s Bill The Butcher. And I’ve come to love Amserdam Vallon as played by DiCaprio. Scorsese does some very nice work here. There isn’t really any additional content from the regular DVD – all you get is VISUAL PERFECTION. Awwww…

MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS

Now if there’s a filmmaker whose movies should be required to have a Blu Ray release – it is Wong Kar Wai. I don’t love this film as much as I have his other work, but I’m still quite fond of it. Maybe its English. I don’t know, but Wong Kar-Wai’s first English language film doesn’t have that same otherworldliness that comes with the language barrier – the texture is there – but the literary sensation is more absent. The film is drenched in his visual style, his dedication to passion and love. The movie makes you pang for love and romance. And even though it isn’t my favorite film of his… it’s still one of the best films I saw last year.

IN THE LINE OF FIRE (Blu Ray)

Oh I love this movie! I love that plastic gun of John Malkovich. I love Clint Eastwood as the aging Secret Service man. I love the score, I love the direction by Wolfgang Petersen – and I just plain love the movie. Watching the movie feels like fishing, building a birdhouse in your shop, like grilling up food for the Fourth of July. It’s man stuff and it hasn’t cut the fat. Now I have it in 1080p!

ONLY THE VALIANT

Do you love “Men on a Mission” flicks like THE PROFESSIONALS, WHERE EAGLES DARE, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE and THE DIRTY DOZEN? Then this film is for you. This is one of those types of impossible missions filled with hard luck cases doing their best to just see the next day given the short straw they drew. They’re headed by Gregory Peck, who is blamed for fucking everything up to begin with – He’s leading his pick of a select group of nothing to lose men to man an abandoned fort in a 300 type of position at a canyon – and to hold out till the cavalry (literally) arrives. These 3 other men are played by Ward Bond, Neville Brand and the fucking awesome Lon Chaney Jr! Also watch out for the badass Apache Chief played by Michael Ansara (the voice of MR FREEZE or Kang from Classic Star Trek!). He’s outstanding, as is this movie. Discover it, you won’t regret it.

DRILLBIT TAYLOR

The trailers for this movie looked like ass. This isn’t a great comedy – but it is better than WALK HARD, which I consider the low water mark for the Judd Apatow produced comedies. It has it’s share of laughs – but what Brill does that makes it not one to own is he really fucks up the kids. They’re not real. You can tell that the film prefers Owen to the kids and that’s not how the film should feel. In many ways – the movie prefers the bully – and that kinda blows. Actually – the film kinda is ass – at least WALK HARD had fun songs. Yeah, this sucks, skip it.

POINT BREAK (Blu Ray)

Retarded Bliss! You gotta love POINT BREAK. First off – casting Keanu Reeves as a surfing detective… well, it’s mad genius of the obvious sort. That said – Patrick Swayze owns this movie. He’s a god. He’s one of the absolute coolest bad guys of all time. And is it just me, or is THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS like a beat by beat rip-off of POINT BREAK? But a good rip-off. And it looks so pretty on Blu Ray!

MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS

ART. Brilliant ART as lived by Yukio Mishima as presented by Francis Ford Coppola & George Lucas and directed by the one and only Paul Schrader. You’ve got to see this film. Seriously. If you love art, documentaries, experimental cinema and just plain genius… this is the film for you. Criterion has again gone above and beyond on this fantastic release. Brilliant film.

BATMAN: THE MOVIE (Blu Ray)

Drooooooool. Oh yeah. Adam West BATMAN in 1080p… Cesar Romero… Frank Gorshin…. Burgess Meredith… Lee Meriwether… Shark Repellant! Walking up the side of a building! Genius reversed shoved in the oven, filled with confetti and it exploded and they caught it on film. This film had it’s world premiere in AUSTIN! The BATBOAT was made here in Austin – and those were HUGE DEALS to me as a kid. I wonder if kids today think it’s a big deal – or if they hang on to the fact that SIN CITY was shot in Austin. Hmmmm… It was a big deal that TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and This were hometown movies. So cool that it’s coming on BluRay.

PATRIOTISM – Criterion Collection

If you’re getting Paul Schrader’s MISHIMA, then you must pick up PATRIOTISM – a film by the subject of Schrader’s film, Yukio Mishima. This is a film about Mishima’s obsession with seppuku, ritual suicide. This film is only 27 minutes long, but Criterion accompanies Mishima’s film with a 45 minute audio interview with the director, a 45 minute making of documentary (of a 27 minute film – I love that sort of thing) – and more about the film in essay and in pictures.

SEX AND DEATH 101

From Daniel Waters, the writer of HEATHERS comes a film directed as well as written to make you laugh as well as stir the loins of men and women alike. SEX AND DEATH 101 is hilarious, adult and just generally fantastic. In some ways it resembles the Sex Farces of long ago – given a modern edge and I love the results. Really outstanding film – shame it didn’t get a wide release with a full marketing push.

CITY OF MEN

From the makers of CITY OF GOD (brilliant work of brilliance) comes a film that is only fantastic and great called CITY OF MEN. This film, in many ways, is more intimate than CITY OF GOD – and it’s story of two young men played by Douglas Silva and Darlan Cunha are at the heart of this story. They were best friends that end up, over the course of the story – on opposite sides of a gang war in Rio De Janeiro – which isn’t a good thing. This is a superior film.

GIRL ON THE BRIDGE

Ok – Flat out – this is my favorite film of the week. GIRL ON THE BRIDGE by director Patrice Leconte tells the story of two losers… Daniel Auteuil and Vanessa Paradis (Johnny Depp’s sweetheart) are those losers. The film picks up as Vanessa Paradis is moments away from ending her life by leaping off a bridge. Daniel stops her. Because she has nothing else to lose, he offers her the position as the target in his Knife Throwing act. The film is in black and white and the story that follows is part Fellini and part Truffaut… and 100% blissful cinema. GIRL ON THE BRIDGE is one of my all time favorite romances. If you believe that the one you love will help set your life right, that you’ll become magically, perhaps tragically, aligned… then this is for you. If you love NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and THE MAN WHO LOVED WOMEN… this is for you. And if you love this and those you should also check out this week’s SEX AND DEATH 101.

DEAD AND GONE

I haven’t seen it, but a friend tells me I should. Rumor has it, this feels a bit like 80s horror. I can’t say, but probably in a week or so I will be able to. So… will you chance it? Click through to Amazon – it has some solid reviews.

That’s all for this week, but next week we’ll be looking at BATMAN BEGINS on Blu Ray, BATMAN – GOTHAM KNIGHT, THE BATMAN – THE Complete Fifth Season, TEEN TITANS – The Complete Fifth Season, THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN, X-FILES REVELATIONS, STOP-LOSS, THE RUINS, LEFT BEHIND: DVD Collection, THE MUMMY (Universal Legacy Series), MON CNCLE ANTOINE, Unrated version of Jet Li’s FEARLESS, PHILOSOPHY OF A KNIFE, THE MAN WITH X-RAY EYES, LITTLE GIRLS and much much more!

I think "Gangs" is more than just a revenge story...

    by chishu_ryu

For me, it's a film about the building of America (as the revenge story never fully pans out, but is lost in the Union Army's raid on New York). I always kind of saw it as Scorsese's version of John Ford's "The Searchers", his favorite film. Just like the Ford film, there is a strong ruthless and racially prejudice character at center who thinks he's doing what's right for his country, and along side him, you have the young upstart, who's not of traditional English ancestry (Jeff Fisher's character was part Indian, and Dicaprio's was Irish) and who represents the next generation. So yeah, I see it as a little more than just a revenge story.

    Oh, and...

    by chishu_ryu

Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" even contains the opening shot of "The Searchers", when Walter "Monk" McGinn kicks open the doors from underground to reveal daylight and the Five Points dressed in snow before the original Battle of Five Points. This is the first hint that "Gangs" is inspired by "The Searchers."

My Blueberry Nights still playing in theaters

    by phantom_of_teh_paradise

but I still got my copy minutes ago. Beautiful movie. I never quite got why it was so hip to hate on it...or why everybody seems to think it's not "up to par" with Wong Kar-Wai. It's spot on Wong Kar-Wai in English. It's cozy, it's lovesick, and it'll scorch your eyeballs off with its cinematography. 9/10

There is no way 'City of Men' is superior to 'God'

    by stinkyfingerz

'City of God' that is. That movie still retains one of THE most authentic, and cringe worthy moments ever caught on film; the moment where a 'wannabe' has to choose which kid he wants to kill....as he points his gun at the potential victims, I have never seen shear terror in the eyes of a child captured on film, like I did in that scene. After watching 'City of Men' I felt like it was a decent movie, but not nearly as moving, or well made as 'City of God'.

    by photoboy

I loved that film, it was one of the first I went to see in the cinema when I became old enough to pass for 15. It has some fantastic lines, my favourite being Clint's response to Malkovitch: "I'll be thinking about that while I'm pissing on your grave!"

Point Break is also an excellent film, especially Gary Busey. If I had even a vague interest in owning a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player I would definitely pick both these films up.

BATMAN ruined LOST IN SPACE. LOST IN SPACE was evil with a sinister DR SMITH, until BATMAN caused the network suits to twist LIS into a Cheesy, Campy, Crapfest too. Well maybe I should hate the network suits. However I do remember thinking when I got older I would understand the Riddles in BATMAN. Hey guess what, those riddles are lame piles of crap. Could not agree more about Gangs of New York - could barley sit in the theater as I thought - good god - this is just bad.... but I have since fell for the movie upon viewing it multiple times at home. Go figure. The acting now seems crisp - and - I'll be damned to admit it - but - Leo and Cam really did a fine fine job. City of Men - forget it - that movie just out and out kicks ass on so many levels.

Walk Hard was ass? Really?I think Harry's taste in movies is taking a huge divergence from mine because I never stopped laughing during Walk Hard and thought it hinted at subtle genius, especially the exceptional soundtrack. I listen to that album every week on the drive to work.Drillbit Taylor had one redeeming scene where they were interviewing bodyguards. Adam Baldwin shows up briefly but Frank Whalley steals the scene with his attempt at being a tough guy.

    by rbatty024

I never understood the hate. For my money it's better than The Departed. Hollywood is so afraid of making period movies, so it's nice when one of the masters uses his influence to get one finished. The scene where the immigrants were coming off the boats and were immediately drafted and then the empty boats were loaded with coffins was fantastic. A truly great film.

Walk Hard Good....Knocked Up Awful fatboy

    by samuel fulmer

stoner fantasy. Sorry but Knocked Up may've made a lot of money, but it wasn't very good. It's a funny film if you don't have friends to have much more interesting "pop culture" conversations with. And it's "heart" was about as authentic as some bad late 80's T.G.I.F. sitcom. It was nothing more than a poor man's Kevin Smith movie (which is preaty poor indeed). Walk Hard on the other hand is probably one of the best/funniest spoofs we've had in recent years (miles beyond Scary Movie/Date Movie/Insert movie), and it also has better music than some so-called musicals. John C. Reiley was excellent (he actually sang, unlike some of the people in the bio-pics he's spoofing). I laughed many times during Walk Hard, while I rolled my eyes at the crap we were given as humor in Knocked-Up.

F & F is PB with cars instead of surfers. Undercover cop gets too close to the guy he has to bust, gets too much into the lifestyle of the bad guys, lets the bad guy go. F & F was good, but essentially a PB remake with cars. Anyone who doesn't see this has not watched both movies!!

I think Drillbit Taylor could've been hilarious

    by vern

if the character of Drillbit Taylor actually was treated as a real homeless guy. Nick Nolte of course would be the best to play him. I guess this was a kids movie and can't be BAD SANTA dark but it seems to me like they have a good premise that they entirely waste by casting Owen Wilson as every god damn charming loser character he ever plays, and not somebody you actually believe is a homeless man who's gonna rob their house. In the Nick Nolte version the humor would not be "ha ha, he says he's a badass but he's actually not" but "oh shit, is he really gonna kill those bullies? This could get ugly."
Oh well. At least it had a few laughs, which is more than you can say for alot of comedies these days. I'm sure it seems pretty good to the kids it was intended for.
Nico Toscani: I don't really feel like watching the LEFT BEHIND series, although part 4 I think is directed by Craig Baxley of STONE COLD and ACTION JACKSON fame.

In the Line of Fire has my "partner-death" scene

    by tacom

A lot of Clint's partners in movies get killed especially in the Dirty Harry movies, but this one has my favorite. First off, you know the second Dylan McDermott is talking about his kid in the beginning he's going to buy it. Then when he has a gun on Malkovitch on the rooftop and yells excitedly at Clint's character whose down on a fire escape "I got him Frank!, Malkovitch shoots. Clint is looking up and he doesn't know what happened. Then McDermott's head falls into frame, clearly dead with a bullet in his head.

what the fuck was Gangs Of New York about?

    by spandau belly

It started out as a revenge movie about killing the dude who killed your dad, but then Leo becomes friends with the guy he wants to kill and seems to forget about killing him until somebody reminds him, then we get a brief training montage of him practicing whipping a blade at a target, then Double D Lewis senses the ambush coming and degrades Leo D in front of everybody saying he's going to scar his face and turn him into a hideous freak to live in shame, but then Leo's face heals right away, Lewis sits back and lets Leo build up and army, I guess because Lewis is just a maniac and likes fighting, then the two gangs all line up for a big rumble and get knocked over by a stray cannonball, followed by Leo suddenly having affection for Lewis again, visiting his grave, and then some time lapse photography of New York in which the World Trade Centre appears and everybody in the theatre when I saw it burst out laughing wondering if it would disappear two seconds later, it didn't, but the damage was already done. That movie had a good look and I like Double D Lewis playing a maniac and all, but the thing is a full on clusterfuck.

She was the hot chick Kirk made out with in that Star Trek episode with the aliens can turn humans into cubes, the "baby woman" in the MST3K episode, AGENT FROM H.A.R.M., and played Miss Moneypenny in the 1967 Casino Royale. She also did some Italian crime flicks in the 70s. I see Gangs of New York in her IMDB bio but can't remember who the heck she played!

    Gangs of New York

    by chishu_ryu

Like all of Scorsese's work, Gangs centers not only on the personal stories of the main characters, but also on the story of the world around the characters, New York, America, which has always been the "other" character in Scorsese's films, but none moreso than in this film. We are allowed a glimpse into this world through the stories of Amsterdam, Bill, and the others, but in the end, their petty disputes and jealousies and selfishness are swallowed by the march of history and the building of New York, and America.

Point Break ripoff of Fast & Furious....

    by darth macchio

well DUH! Jeeze dude...I saw that when I first saw the movie. Replace surfing with racing, FBI with LAPD, inner-city California with Malibu beach and drop Busey's character (don't tell him tho, you don't know what that fucking guy is capable of at any given moment)...and viola! You've got yourself a new movie! Seriously, its the same as when I noticed that Cinderella's 80's classic "Nobody's Fool" is practically a note for note ripoff of earlier 80's Def Leppards "Bringin on the Heartbreak". You can sing either song's lyrics over the other, they're that close...try it! It's fun!Did anybody notice that the "Kyle Gass" on that last zombie movie is the same Kyle Gass, also known as KayGee, or just KG, from the inimitable Tenacious D?Forgive me if someone else mentioned it, I can't read.

for example, regarding Master and Commander I chose to listen to your opinion on the transfer not the reviews of websites like highdefdigest and dvdtalk that said that it was just a little better than the DVD, and I gotta tell you they were right, looks good but far from what blu ray can do, so in the case of Gangs I'll go with them, I don't like when they use DNR (digital noise reduction) because it washes a lot of the detail and Gangs was that pristine look that's very un-cinematic, like if it was shot on an old HD video camera (I haven't spend much time watching projectors but for what I've seen they are vastly inferior to my 40 inches bravia LCD)

Outside of a porn film, I don't know of any other movie this year that features such an endless array of smokin' hot babes as this film. And each woman, one more stunning than the other, gets plenty of screen time to make her mark on the film. Consistently weird, hilarious and

I love my HD but that format is a monstrosity where NO art looks good.

DiCaprio/Diaz were 100% wrong for GANGS

    by mullah omar

He's gotten better, but I never for a second believed that he fit the role. Cameron Diaz was even worse for that film. Maybe Scorsese was pressured by the studio to pick stars rather than appropriate actors, or maybe the film would have never gotten a greenlight without them, but whoever thought that was genuinely good casting needs to be run out of the business.

What people are seeming to describe here is NOT ONE IOTA of my experience with the disc. I'm looking at the image through my Sharp BluRay player - plugged through my Denon receiver being outputted from my Epson 1080p projector onto a Da-Lite 9' by 12' screen and I see ZERO problems. No wavy lines - no pixel issues and zero artifacting. It is crystal clear. Don't have any of the issues folks are describing. That said, my JUMPER BluRay won't even play without major skipping and freezing issues.

    by series7

The movie was surprisingly very funny. It was probably too funny for adults to get, that or to raunchy? Can't believe this didn't get a wider release. I mean it wouldn't have been a hit, because most adults like their comedies to be lame and predictable like Baby Mama, or college kids want their adult comedies to be familar and something already popular, Forgetting Sarah Marshell. This wasn't the funniest movie ever, but it was a lot funnier then you think it would be. Probably the best live action Patton Oswald performence ever, seeing that they finally stuck him in something with an R rating so he's not stuck dumbing/watering down his material which doesn't work for him.

Di Caprio and Diaz ruined Gangs

    by zapano

It's such a shame cause there is so much going for it. Even casting Colin Farrell instead of Di Caprio would have improved that film immensley. It seemed too much for Di Caprio, he seemed to be drowning in every scene. I really hope this Shutter Island, or whatever it is, is the last film Scorsese does with Di Caprio. Most of those films have been enjoyable to watch but they just seem parodies of scorsese. Scorsese needs to do something completely different. he's become too conservative, he's just making films that fulfill people's expectations of what a scorsese film is. Supposedley Scorsese is scouting around eastern europe with de niro for some secret project.
