THE DARK KNIGHT Reviews Flood In!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Beaks here...
THE DARK KNIGHT doesn't open until July 18th, but Warner Brothers is junketing it very soon, so the screenings are upon us. And the reactions are... well, read for yourself.
The first is From "Gary DP", who thinks HEAT sucks.
Let me start by saying I wasn't a huge fan of Batman Begins. It has some great ideas, but the pacing is poor. I liked the Falcone stuff, but ultimately the villains are so much of a non-threat that there's zero tension. But I'm not here to review that movie, I'm here to review The Dark Knight, and it's a far better film. The movie feels a lot shorter than Batman Begins even though it's about a half hour longer. I'm not sure if it's the greatest comic book movie of all time, but it's certainly the most ambitious.
Gotham City is still riddled with crime. Falcone has been replaced by Salvatore Marconi (Eric Roberts), and instead of just one big mob, there's a bunch of gangs. And despite the fact that Batman is a thorn in their sides, the public is uncomfortable with the idea of a masked vigilante. With the arrival of Harvey Dent, the district attorney's office is no longer too chickenshit to bring down the mobsters, so in a way Batman's presence isn't as necessary as it once was. Because of this he ponders giving up his life of crime-fighting for a normal life with Rachel Dawes. When she choses Harvey over Bruce, she can't even bring herself to tell him and instead writes a letter which she gives to Alfred.
And then there's Heath Ledger's Joker which is every bit as awesome as you've heard. When he makes a pencil disappear into the head of one of this mobsters in a surprisingly R-rated moment, you won't know whether to laugh or scream. In most movies the bad guy always threatens to do something awful, but in the end is stopped. Not in this movie. When the Joker threatens to kill someone close to Batman, he does. When the Joker threatens to blow up a hospital, he does. In his more nuanced moments he evokes co-star Gary Oldman in The Professional, and in his over-the-top moments he puts Nicholson to shame. He's every bit as funny, but far more disturbing. And ultimately, the performances are top notch through and through.
Comic book purists will be happy to hear that Batman finally does some detective work this time around. He creates a device giving him the ability to monitor everyone in Gotham City via a satellite that detects cell phone signals. Lucius Fox, feeling that his morals have been compromised, threatens to leave over the device. Compromised morals are a running theme through the movie and it's handled well, but I've grown tired of the concept that Batman is no better than one of the freaks he does battle with. It's been done and I think it's time to make a movie where Batman is portrayed as a hero and not an outcast.
Aaron Eckhart does a powerful job transforming from Harvey Dent to Two Face. The cgi render that appeared on the internet a couple of months ago is similar to what he looks like in the movie, bones protruding, visible tendons in his jaw. It's really grotesque, and a really convincing special effect. But it should be noted that there's only one villain in this movie (two, if you count Scarecrow who appears briefly at the beginning). Nolan's Two Face is a vigilante just like Batman, the difference being that he offs the criminals, something that Batman ends up taking responsibility for. He only becomes a real threat because of his issues with Gordon, who he feels is responsible for the death of someone close to him.
So it's a pretty intense movie. I guess I understand the Heat comparison, only Heat sucks, and this doesn't. What are my problems with The Dark Knight? Two Face is such a cool looking character, but is reduced to being the Darth Maul of this movie (or Venom if you want to go there), so I sorta wish Nolan didn't blow his load so early in the series, and so late in the movie. I know everyone likes a dark Batman, but this movie is a total downer. Everyone's dead or a bad guy in the end. Like I said before, the concept that Batman is just another crazy criminal gets old really quick, and it was done with much more enthusiasm in Batman Returns. Oh, and the batmobile still looks like shit. Remember when Batman has to go through that little alley in Batman Returns, so it turns into that little bullet car? That's basically what the batpod is, but not as cool.
And finally there's just way too much going on here, and as a result Batman once again takes a back seat to a whole parade of characters. They all tie into the story, but with a few slight changes, they could have been eliminated so that we could spend more time with the main character. In addition to Rachel, Harvey, Joker, Scarecrow, Gordon, Alfred, Lucius Fox, and Marconi, there's a guy a Wayne Enterprises who stumbles upon some documents and finds out who Batman is and a tv reporter played by Anthony Michael Hall. There's so many people in the movie that I was expecting to see Robert Altman's name in the credits! And character development suffers as a result. When one of the characters bites it in the middle of the movie, it's played like it's this horribly tragic thing, but no one in the audience really gives a shit about him/her. And I'm pretty sure that the slimy guy at Wayne Enterprises is just a lame setup for a sequel, but I'll let you solve that one for yourselves.
I know that sounds like a lot of flaws, but in the grand scope of all the awesomeness that happens in the movie, these are only minor issues. It might be crowded, but it definitely doesn't feel bloated or overlong, and if there's one major flaw it's that it leaves you wanting more. It's great to see that comic book movies no longer exist to sell toys. Chris Nolan has created a haunting movie so thick with atmosphere, that even the most cynical of fans won't be able to resist. As an adaptation of the comic book, I think it still leaves something to be desired. The "real world" take on the material may turn some people off, but if you can get past that, you're in for a real treat. The Dark Knight definitely raises the bar for the comic book genre.
Flawed, but the best comic book movie ever? Interesting.
Bart Rene-Thiel drags L.A. CONFIDENTIAL into the conversation, but the comparison is at least favorable.
Expectations for The Dark Knight, the sequel to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins were astronomical after a briliant viral marketing campaign. This sets off most film critics' Spider Senses: "Surely the film can't live up to the hype" is your first thought. It also proves both right and wrong, as The Dark Knight doesn't just live up to your expectations, it breaks through the glass ceiling of your wildest dreams!
Nolan kicks in the narrative overdrive from the first minute and doesn't relent after that. A spectacular bank job with a gruesome aftermath introduces Heath Ledger's Joker, aka "The Scariest Supervillain Of All Time™". Ledger's performance is so incredibly strong that by all means come July 24th, it should become the pure definition of the term 'sociopath' in your friendly neighbourhood dictionary. Ledger, who sadly passed away in the beginning of this year, leaves a legacy unlike anything that has ever been seen in a comic book film adaptation as Batman's nemesis.
Ledger's merciless depiction of The Joker makes him a truly dangerous opponent for our protagonist and creates truly terrifying scenes. While it may not come as a great surprise that the Caped Crusader survives this installment, that's not saying he's going to be too happy about that.
Besides adrenalinerush producing actionscenes that -cliche as it may sound - have never been captured on film, the film is also blessed with comedy as dark as the kohl-rimmed eyes of the Joker, courtesy of the script by David S. Goyer and Chistopher and Jonathan Nolan. You won't know if you have to laugh out loud or crawl behind your seat in terror when faced with the wicked ways of the psychopathic clown.
The Dark Knight rises above the tropes of the super hero movie and establishes itself as a sprawling crime epic filled with intrigues and plot twists that can easily hold its own against classics from the Warner archives like L.A. Confidential and Heat.
Here's a brief write-up from BigAl33, who focuses on the brilliance of Heath Ledger's Joker.
Harry-
I saw The Dark Night earlier today, and i have to say, with all due respect to Jack, but there is only 1 person who can be considered the true Joker, and his name is Heath Ledger. His performance in this movie was incredible, i've never been a huge fan of heath, but he impressed me today. The movie is very good, i like the darkness of the movie, and it was alot better than i thought it would be, i mean i knew that it would be good, but DAMN.
Of course Christian Bales, Bruce Wayne is spot on, especially in showing bruces torment on how he has to handle the Joker. Aaron Eckhart did an excellent job as Harvey Dent/Twoface, his transformation was very well done, and the hints of his darkside were nice touches.
The movie is long, but never boring or slow, it keeps you interested until the very end. The way that Nolan is handling the reintroduction of Batman is very refreshing, he's telling the story the way that it should be, dark and real. Don't get me wrong, i love the original Batman that Tim Burton put out, but Nolan is blowing those movies out of the water.
By the way, the twoface pic that ya'll had a few weeks ago that was on iwatchstuff.com, is the true look of twoface, but the picture doesn't do it justice, seeing it move was just amazing, and impressive how they did it. I have to agree with the guy that wrote the 1st review for this movie, the Jokers pencil trick was Magical.

And here's the rave to end all raves from Rupert Pupkin, who claims the film is his "pride and joy". (He's also the first to acknowledge that he saw TDK in IMAX.)
I'll start out this review by saying that I have not read comic books in years. When I was a teenager, I was an avid reader but I just seemed to grow out of it. With that said, I thought BATMAN BEGINS was the best comic book on film I had seen to date. After seeing DARK KNIGHT earlier today, I can safely say, this was the GODFATHER 2 of comic book films. (I owe an AICN chatroom attendee for that comparison.)
The film begins with the 6 minute teaser that some of you had seen previously in December on the front of I AM LEGEND. I read somewhere that Nolan was inspired by HEAT with this film. It shows. The bank robbery seems to almost be an homage. William Fichtner is even in the scene. His only scene in the film at that. I do not want to really go into plot details on the film as I want to try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. I just want to comment on the various aspects of it.
First off, the look of the film is stunning. The last Batman film kind of reminded me in some spots as being very Londonesque, especially Wayne Manor. Gotham looks more like New York, Chicago or Los Angeles then any of the previous BATMAN films to date. Nothing at all seems like a soundstage. It surpasses THE PRESTIGE as Wally Pfister's most beautifully shot film to date, Do yourself a favor and see the film in IMAX if you can. Not an OMNIMAX screen, because they curve. And when a film is shot in Cinemascope, OMNIMAX makes it blurred and hard to follow action.
Next, the screenplay and direction. I am convinced after seeing this film that Nolan may be one of our greater talents out there today. He has not made a bad film yet and this film might be his crowning achievement. He and Jonathan Nolan co-wrote the script together and they seem to have such a firm grasp on the story and the characters of Gotham City that part of me wishes the Burton BATMAN films never existed. The Nolan helmed BATMAN films have been everything that Singer forgot to do with SUPERMAN RETURNS. You can pay homage to the past but make damn well sure you have a script to go with it. And unlike SUPERMAN RETURNS, which at times seemed intolerably long, THE DARK KNIGHT is 152 minutes on the edge of your seat. Nolan moves the camera in ways that he has never done in his prior films. There are 360 degree pans around characters in several scenes. You all know what that is normally. The Michael Bay special. Nolan never abuses it and keeps it slow enough that you can follow everything going on in the scene. And a true test to craftsmanship, never in this film was I distracted by CGI. When it is used, it is so beautifully handled that it never stands out. That is the true success of proper CGI.
The performances are all top notch. My theory has always been, the better quality of actors in an action film, the better your film will be. The holdovers from the previous films, Bale, Caine, Freeman & Oldman all have settled into their roles. Bale has the more demanding chore because he is Batman much more in this film then Bruce Wayne. My only complaint, and it's a minor one with Bale is at times, I think the Batman voice sounds too much like a grunt. Maggie Gyllenhal steps in for the completely replaceable Katie Holmes and gives her character a much more layered feel to it then Mrs. Cruise did. Aaron Eckheart is actually a prominent fixture in the film and if you don't want any more spoilers involving his character, stop watching the TV ads. He would not have been my first choice for Harvey Dent but he seems incredibly right for it. But, as you might expect, Heath Ledger's performance is nothing short of spectacular. Again, when I heard Ledger was cast, I had my suspicions. His take on the Joker is so menacing, it makes Nicholson's campiness look like Caesar Romero. With Ledger's Joker, you aren't laughing at him like you were with Nicholson. At times, you are laughing a nervous chuckle at his pure psychotic behavior. It is a mesmerizing performance that Ledger immerses himself in and truly makes it his own. He is a landmark villain for this genre of film. I would absolutely remember him posthumously at Oscar time. It's a shame he's gone. This would have moved him to the A list. A minor spoiler here, see if you catch the BROKEBACK joke Heath throws into the film.
While I know it is impossible to please everyone, Nolan certainly comes damn close here by delivering a film of such brilliance, that it goes beyond great comic book film to great film period.
The hype is on! Can the film possibly live up? I think Christopher Nolan's one of the most talented directors working today, so why the hell not?
Faithfully submitted,
Mr. Beaks
P.S. Just so's you knows, I've received word from a very credible source that the "BROKEBACK joke" is actually a JERRY MAGUIRE gag.
Gotham City is still riddled with crime. Falcone has been replaced by Salvatore Marconi (Eric Roberts), and instead of just one big mob, there's a bunch of gangs. Time to get off AICN for the next month. Still have not read any reviews. Must...not...spoil.
-
Sorry. Had to do it.
-
excuse me I need to wipe the vomit off my desk
-
Heath Bar gonna get a Supporting Oscar post death nod? I mean he pretty much was the James Dean of our time. Kind of died in a similar fashion, cars were all the fad in those days, drugs are all the fad these days. I really want this movie to be good, shit every talkbacker may as well be called Dark Knight Fan #1. I don't know what TB'ers are going to go after this movie comes out? Because every time a movie came out someone didn't want to see, or there mom wouldn't give them $7.50 to see a movie ($10 if you live in NY or Cali) they would always chant I'll wait for Dark Knight. Well what will people be waiting for next?
-
I almost don't want to see TDK because I'm afraid it won't live up to the awesomeness it projects in the trailers. Plus I was burned bad by Spiderman 3 for movies wasting my favorite villains. But this one sounds great. I'll be in line at Star Cinema, Madison, WI for the midnight IMAX premiere...

It's great to see that comic book movies no longer exist to sell

Doesn't stop them from flooding the market with them though either.

Is the worst thing ever posted on this site.

So what was THE GODFATHER of comic book films then? SPIDER-MAN 2?

the others, not so much

This movie is gonna kick so much ass. It will easily knock Spiderman 2 from the top of my fav list.

I can not wait!

and pencil trick are real spoilers...i wish i hadn't read one, oh well

Anyone who doesn't like Heat or calls it a bad film is an idiot. And LA Confidential was one of the best films of the 90's. So, if Dark Knight is even close to the caliber of those films it will not only be the comic book film of the decade but it might even be up there with the greatest pics of all time. I've got my IMAX tickets for midnight opening day. I'm stoked. Thank you God for Christopher Nolan.

Now THERE'S a spoiler for you...
-
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER seems to confirm that a certain someone dies at the end. Can somebody please please please please tell me if we see a corpse, or if the characters just think that that character is dead?

Mirrored ceilings in a bedroom, perhaps, but that's it.
-
...Looks like Nolan's overcome the curse, but I hope he keeps the villain-count down in the next installment... if the suits at Warner's will let him, that is.
-
Around the end of the second act. Just a guess. This movie isn't rocket science.

Damn. Three weeks is too much.Nordling - you took the words right out of my mouth.

Why all the hate?

Which is shit! >:(

I've got nothing else to say.

Suck my dick. Heat is a fantastic film.

..but I am extremely excited for this movie. Remember that feeling you'd get as a kid? No, not when your daddy touched you, but when you knew you were going to Disneyworld in a couple of weeks? That's how I feel right now, only now I have a much bigger dong.
-
Or taken out of cloth enclosures, or thrown from hand to hand, or anything resembling the sound Wolverine makes when his claws are extracted. Big pet peeve of mine.
-
I really wanna like this movie, but Batman Begins was just to mediocre to get excited. Definitely Nolan's weakest movie. Damn, I hope so much that this will be better.
-
The man is setting the example. Getting my IMAX tickets on the 3rd. I am happier than a pig in shit.
-
offers nothing, really. just repeats the hype and description of heath...doesn't dampen my eagerness to see it thoughg
-
But he aint Batman. His voice as one reviewer puts it was always too much of a grunt in Batman Begins. I let that go though, because we were witnessing a raw Batman, a beginning. Now that we are beyond that, Bale is too wrong for Batman. He may be good as Bruce Wayne but the reviewer suggests that there is much more of Batman in this film. Having got that gripe off my chest, I fucking loved Batman Begins and I cant wait to see this one, with a fucking awesome promising interpretation of the Joker. Shit, what a summer this is turning out to be. Iron Man (good fun, not as great as everyone is making it out to be though), Indiana Jones (fucking loved it. Bitches wanna complain about story and realism of the action can go fuck themselves as they havent got a fucking clue what an Indy film is about), Wall-E (98% on Rottentomatoes, I'd be damned if I end up agreeing with the 2%), Hulk, Prince Caspian, Wanted, all rating above 70% on Rottentomatoes, which makes for a fucking great summer of cinema.
-
should quietly apologize, everything he said was true.
-
I have such high hopes. I'm going to leave expectations at the door of course. But everything I've heard and read says this could be the best comic film in years. For me, I think Spider-Man 2 and X2 are the best thus far. Iron Man is close. After seeing Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3, I hope there is not a third Batman reboot film.
-
yeah watched begins last night (played twice in a row on cable- with limited commercials and a TDK trailer every break!)and there was a scene where bale is speaking to alfred as tough but troubled bruce wayne- and i though THAT'S what the batman voice should have been- not the heavy handed, frothing stuff he ends up doing. i was hoping he was going to ditch that drama in his early stage, but no.
spoiler question - why is it he needs to change suits? what happens to the old one? -
everyday i go there since opening day it's been going down. it's just dipped back up to 68 but it was at 64 a day or two ago. i was surprised to see it drop a point daily though.
-
Good call about duffer63's review. He was right. And days before the others.
-
one of 50 best films of the decade? I'm so incredibly excited about The Dark Knight. The summer movie season is pretty much over once this film is released.
-
It almost has to be Rachael who dies in the middle of the movie. Maybe that will be the equivalent of Joker crippling and raping Barbara in the Killing Joke.
-
was well acted and well shot, but it was just too weird and pointless.
-
Most likley because from what i hear the old one was so uncomfortable to wear. Plus they like to sell scuba batman and space batman toys.

Cannot wait for this. So now that theres tons of people that have seen it, what the fawk is Alfred's secret????
-
If you were to make it 'realistic', I doubt the first suit would be Batman's last -- wouldn't he always be trying to make it better?
-
Presumably, it's the aforementioned letter.
-
I think it's the note that Rachael gave him, from what I gather from all the spoilers so far.
-
Thanks, I was thinking that after reading the first review.. not much of a secret though unless he's never told.. until she's already de--- nevermind.
-
Have you people not noticed Rachel is Preggo in the trailers? I bet it's bruces baby. Joker kills his love and child. Man it really is going to be a dark knight.
-
Well, I know to ignore that one.
-
I remember reading that someone draws a big '?' on a picture of Batman or Wayne.. that might be the thin slimey employee... I guess that's Nolan's thing, end each movie with the calling card of the next villian.
-
It's not really even that much of a spoiler, but Rachel's death only contributes to the fracture in the relationship of Bruce and Harvey.
-
Just sayin'.
-
Let me guess, 'SHOW ME THE MONEY!?'
-
the first reviewer seemed to imply that.
-
What trailer are you talking about with a pregnant RD? If that's true, that would make sense with Alfred's big secret, that it could be Bruce's kid. Worse if she does actually die.
-
Okay, I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read all the reviews, and seen all the footage and I have an idea of what we can expect when July 17 rolls around. SPOILERS LIKELY FOLLOW........ I swear to God, skip this if you don't want to know............ The movie begins with Gotham in not much better shape than before Batman showed up. A bunch of gangs have picked up where Falcone left off. Batman is still taking them down, but the Joker shows up and brings all the gangs together to kill Batman. Meanwhile, even though Gotham is a little wary of accepting Batman as their saviour, Harvey Dent has been gathering support. He wins the election and change looks to be coming. Bruce Wayne wonders if Gotham needs a Batman; if he can live happily ever after with Rachel. He doesn't know that Rachel is in love with, and plans to marry, Harvey Dent. Dent, Gordon and Batman are trying to take down all the gangs. At some point, the Joker kills Rachel Dawes which affects both Bruce and Harvey deeply. It sounds like the Joker kidnaps both Harvey and Rachel and gives Batman the option that he can save one of them. They are in different buildings. Batman chooses Rachel, and Gordon goes after Harvey, but the Joker has switched addresses, so when Batman thinks he's going after Rachel, he's really going for Harvey. Rachel blows up, and Harvey gets scarred, becoming Two-Face. Two-Face goes on a rampage killing all these mob guys, and evetually kidnaps Gordon's family (He blames Gordon for Rachel's death) and there's a fight between Batman and Two-Face that ends with Two-Face falling to his death.(It is unclear whether or not everyone assumes Harvey is dead, or if he 100% gone). Everyone is worried that the public learning of Harvey's crime spree would undo all the good he did, so Batman takes the blame for all the mob killings. He's left on the run at the end of the movie. Joker is captured, but alive. I read somewhere that the movie ends with Gordon explaining to his son that Batman is Gotham's protector, its Dark Knight... roll credits. END SPOILERS. Now, only some of this is confirmed information, but from the various reviewers all giving a rough outline of the movie, this is the most coherent one i can put together.
-
she's a hottie!
-
As soon as all the haters get home. What kind of person doesn't like Heat? Probably the same type of person who kicks a bag a squirrels down the street.
-
That does sound pretty good from the spoilers we have gotten so far. Bravo.
-
again!
-
To find a review to hang their hat on. I have a feeling this is going to be a big movie that critics will eat up...
-
Boy, I'm glad the other reviews are so good. Ragging on what's almost universally regarded as one of the best crime dramas ever kinda makes you seem like a fool. I mean, if you had said why you don't like it I could understand this, but dang, man. You must be gunning for talkback hate.
-
Ican'twaitforthis!
-
Couldn't they just write her out of this film in the first place if they are just going to kill her off in this one. Just for CONTINUITY's sake they could have easily replaced the character with some other broad. It's irksome.
-
Riiiiiight...
-
He's at home...washing his tights!HA HA HA HA HA!!!
-
THIS LIVES UP TO THE HYPE!!!
Please God let this be good, everyone hyped up Batman Begins and I left underwhelmed -
But then they would be introducing another 'broad' just to set up the tension/situation between Wayne and Dent.
-
You are needed in talkback 37263. Let us continue our discussion here since this one is spoilerific
-
Ghostrider > Iron Man
-
How much 2-Face will be in this movie? At first I thought he would only be seen briefly at the end of the movie, but now it seems that he will actually be around for awhile.
-
You are too Fun Knee.
-
You know I need to see that in every Batman thread now MNG...
-
When the joker is entering the room there is a far shot of Rachael she has a belly plus I remember seeing a picture of her in a maroon dress with a belly in it somewhere. It's just a guess i could be wrong.
-
If there is not a scene involving an art museum and a huge jukebox wailing with 80's awesomeness aka Prince.
-
Oh, there is definitely a good chance it's going to 'splode. Because AICN's cast of BB/TDK Haters are as predictable as the sun.So, grab your clipboards, boys! And get prepared to check off those hater talking points!
-
I think that's a big stretch. Something like that would be out by now. I don't see Nolan going all flamboyant aka Singer.
-
and again, not seeing the movie yet, but my only complaint is the necessity of the Hong Kong scene. What is the purpose of this other than to catch a baddie? As I posted on another forum, I feel it is not needed and fluff.
-
Roger that!
-
You could be right. But look at trailer 2 she looks big. and Maggie is a skinny chick.
-
Give us a link to what you are talking about. I have a feeling you are right.
-
What part about the reviews make you think that? The 'best comic movie ever' part or maybe the 'better than I imagined' part. Perhaps it's just the fact that you are a Debbie Downer.
-
What should happen:The theater staff are all wearing those bank robber clown masks. Random other employees are made up in he Joker paint. Even the fats kids, big red painted mouths and black eyes, bumping chests while holding pencils. Then show the Joker-ized trailer. Then the film. "Then everyone just loses their minds!" /jokervoice
-
I can't believe you wrote that.
-
So what? you couls introduce a new woman in two minutes. It's not like Harvy Dent was in the BB.
-
I can't watch the trailer now or I would try to comment, can't find a pic of her that would help. I just think one of the reviews or spoilers would've mentioned that. Unless that is the secret, but I think that would be way out of left field.
-
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thedarkknight/trailer2/
-
Right after the joker enters the party. Look at Maggie in the Far Shot.
-
You too man. Hope the movie makes you happy, eventually.
-
Has aged as well as month old headcheese. I tried to watch that movie right before Batman Begins came out and skipped whole chapters.
-
You could be right. I remember hearing this rumor somewhere and the seeing evidence of it. I am just throwing it out there. Oh well we will find out in 3 weeks.
-
that is the second time i've read your ang lee---> ang ry joke.
and, i'm not proud to say, both times...i have laughed. -
Feels like we've been waiting even longer for this film than the long arsed wait we HAVE waited... so it's finally time to put my fingers in/over my ears/eyes and try to hear as little about it as possible until I'm sat in front of an IMAX screen with a shit eating grin on my face.
-
She's ugly, flat-chested and can't really act worth a crap. Hopefully her "rachel dawes" will be killed in this movie.
-
between Beyond Thunderdome and Men at Work.
-
The best Riddler story from the last five years has been Hush, in which Wayne's secret identity was compromised. So if we're not getting some Hush action here, it's prolly a setup for what's to come. Nolin cherry-picks the best Bat stories as it is.
-
Have you seen Sherrybaby? They're not GIANT SILICONE MONSTROSITIES that you have no doubt been brainwashed into liking since birth, but she has cute tits.
-
I'm ashamed to tell you I have both of those on DVD. Assuming you mean Norm McDonald's Dirty Work...Haha
-
because I haven't seen a highly anticipated film spoiler-free since Die Hard: With A Vengeance...
-
Fuck you, you tasteless bastard.
-
I think you're right. I haven't watched Batman 89 since BB came out... not that I don't enjoy it, I do... but it just doesn't hold up. I think Michael Keaton is good, and Nicholson does okay even though I feel the praise for him is a bit overdone. He pretty much plays himself in the movie. I think B89 has pretty good atmosphere but there's too many wrongs in there to be overlooked. (not that BB doesn't have it's own flaws-- i watched it again yesterday for the first time since 2006, and I had problems with it)
-
Is he actually in this movie and who does he play?
-
I don't hate B89 like you seem to.
-
Investigative Reporter ala Robert Wuhl in B89.
-
if there are anymore complaints about batman being the anti-hero, this will happen...so stfu...this is basically the long halloween with some additions and subtractions...one of those additions being the cult of batman which comes from tdk
-
AMH plays a tv reporter name Mike Engel who receives information from a Wayne Enterprises employee about Batman's secret identity. From reviews, it sounds like AMH isn't in the movie that much though.
-
Suck on that! I mean a device that sucks water out of your body and leaves you in the from of pixie sticks? How is that not the greatest batman movie ever!
-
Never noticed that before, I may have to check that out. I knew it was a terrible looking scene, but did not know it went Pee Wee's Playhouse on us...
-
Also how could we forget Miss Kitka! she was Purrrr-fect!
-
The big black guy that really has the end fight with Batman. Who the hell was that guy? And the Joker's (deep breath) number one (deep breath) guuuuuy, Bob. Who the hell was that guy?
-
But I heard he's actually a villain, right. Like Egghead or something.
-
There was speculation he was the Riddler, which is bull. Other people were saying he was Azrael (I think anyway).
-
i've come to accept the nolan stuff -which some consider 'boring'- as what really happened, and the iconic comics, or extremely personal vision of BATMAN 89 as mythic, elaborated re-tellings of re-tellings of real batman events. Like how one simple battle in history can eventually be so distorted, elaborated or retold that the end result is almost cartoonlike or overly patriotic
-
I will immolate myself if that happens.
-
Not that you needed my approval, but it's an interesting way of putting it.
-
Come on. You know it's EGGactly what this franchise needs!
-
i also now accept nolan's joker in makeup now because, well, it's realistic, but also because people who see the joker (and survive), or see him on tv, or spread the rumors and fearful gossip about him would start to tweak the reality...saying he has albino, or making up their own backstories as to how he got whitened, or how his mouth was cut......just like how the criminals speculate if batman can really fly, or if he's a robot, or a monster, or a ninja
-
Then again, Smallville creator's said no flights no tights...
-
What formula was that, per say? Just curious.
-
Can you guys imagine what Nolan could do with this character? Man that would rule. Na. Let's just do Ma Parker instead.
-
by that i mean if warner hadn't taken the chance on a 'dark' moody batman movie in 89, we may have not ever been allowed to get BB ot TDK. now, chances are since the comics were already getting darker, the movies would eventually- and if not burton then maybe some other dark artist at some point...but, in our universe of reality, batman 89' tipped the scale for darker batman (and other super movies to come), so for that i respect it but it is way dated and as campy now as batman 66 was in 89.
-
He needs to be a kid like a 10 or 12 year old, Please no 25 year old Robin. Then the real challange comes from how do you get a kid in Nolan's universe to fight crime realistically is a big problem?
-
http://tinyurl.com/4e5mon
-
that we can't also enjoy TDK. Maybe both movies will be remembered as being excellent.
-
They can get Phyliss Diller for a darker take on Marcia.
-
he probably already gave his nod or tip of hat to in BB.
The kid with the argueing parents who batman gave the nightscope to, who was with rachel in the narrows and almost got killed, and who the police said that after the fear attacks his parents were missing.he also had a red shirt on, in an otherwise color-lacking movie.there ya go. -
B89 was, in its time, a deeply flawed but very enjoyable movie. It still has some appeal, though "Batman Returns" is more interesting if frequently incoherent. Nicholson plays himself on acid, which for most of the movie is lots of fun. And at least he was The Joker, not some Crow wannabe pretending to be The Joker. No permanent clown look = no Joker. I don't care how wide his grin looks.
-
even watched it last night and totally forgot to see what he was credited as...probably 'narrows kid' or something.
-
I'd sooner suck it than be you, pal, you homophobic waste of time. Nolan's take is about as realistic as Grant Morrison's.
-
That was actually pretty funny. Gave me a chuckle. I disagree with you on the necessary permanance of the clown makeup though.
-
Uh, that's from GLENGARRY, GLEN ROSS. You call yourself a fan, you son of a bitch?
-
the dialogue is so much better than in BB...thank god.
-
of this typically adolescent crap. Teh Suk: Next time one of YOUR essays is cited and discussed in American Film magazine, feel free to get back to me with your expertise on comics as they relate to film
-
There are plenty of versions of the Joker where he painted his face instead of getting a white bleach from an acid tank.
-
I'll see The Dark Night and i'll no doubt enjoy it, just like I have enjoyed all the batman movies on the big screen..Yes I said ALL of them...some where solid hits and some left a lot to be desired, but none of them left me dissapointed I got as much out of each as i expected-seriously did anybody have high hopes for Batman Forever or Batman & Robin???? more camp than action films, but fun none the less
-
i usually dislike iesb, but that is awesome. i'll report back once i've watched 'em.
-
I hate amature movie reviews, they just end up being scene by scene descriptions rather than analysis. Yes, we get it, you saw a movie before us, don't prove it by describing every scene, tell us whether it was any good or not. Sigh.
-
What the fuck is American Film magazine? Exactly...
-
ScriptGirl. Yeah, where is that little minx?
-
Obviously Batman isn't 'realistic,' but Nolan's work is perceived as being the 'What if Batman was real..' movie. You can nit-pick anything to death that's fiction. 'There's no way a house would survive a tornado, let alone be picked up completely and tossed to another land.' Where's the fun in that? I'll go back to my original assertions that people that think like that are just Debbie Downers, misery loves company indeed.
-
sorry but without 89's Batman we wouldnt be seeing any of the current round of comic book films..
Damn i can remember back to '89 when i worked as movie theater manager and got an early look at the trailer-which I quickly spliced to to every movie in the theater-just to see the reaction to the opening shot of the flames coming out the batmobile - damn that was cool....and the way people started to get excited about seeing the movie...Keaton-no way!! Nicholson- too cool....ah the good old days when a movie could still suprise you..... -
So, apparently Two-Face is a major character even after his transformation? It looks like we've yet again Venomed ourselves. Fans, based on no real information, think that this OTHER villain will just barely appear and set up the next film. Well, at least we're no getting Two-Face that Tommy Lee Jones played. Ya know, written exactly like the Joker except for a coin and a little less laughing.
-
I am glad I am not the only old fucker here.
I think it is becoming cool to bash Burton's Batman. I will not say it was perfect, but it is a lot better than the kids these days make it out to be.
That being said, BB was 2/3 greatness and I fully expect TDK to be the best of the three.
(No I am not forgetting Returns or the "other" "Batman" movies" though I would like to) -
Teh Suk is attempting to troll everyone who posts. What a shock!
-
Gotcha. Then I can agree, if a read a plot summary (like the info button on your TV) saying 'Nolan's realistic take on the Batman comics' I'd be pissed as well.
-
all the crime bosses are Italian, I thought the guinies would be whining by now.
-
Joker: (imitating) FREEEAKuh. Why don't we cut you up into little pieces and feed ya to your pooches, hmm? Then we'll see how loyal a hungry dog really is.
-
I think ripping on it is being the proverbial Monday Morning Quarterback. Face it, without B89 and Superman:The Movie, we would not have any of these movies...
-
a must
-
Brunomac, please finish your thought
-
Or did you jump on the bandwagon going the other way then?
-
RE: Coin and less laughing
Here is where you and I agree. AS much as I like TLJ, he made a comic book character into a cartoon! Or did he? Was it he or Schumacher? -
Fuck off, first reviewer. Heat was awesome.
-
Just a brief clip and Maggie already makes Katie's performance look like she thought she was on 90210. Finally a chic who can act off Bale and stand her own.
-
Nobody has to be ashamed that they can appreciate B89 for what it is. Especially those of us who were a certain age at that certain time. No, it doesn't hold up today, but most 80's action movies don't either.
-
pretty much every scene from the trailers extended by twenty seconds. Joker is in clips 8 and 12, for those interested. In clip 4 you can kinda tell that oldman is hiding his accent.
-
That's a really good way to put it.
-
And Batman Returns, were great in their own way. Its just a very different interpretation. BB and TDK seem to be more for the 14 year old kid in 89 that is grown up now. Oh and breather "Bob" (somebody asked about that), wasn't that dorky Malek from Conan the Destroyer?
-
THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS "POILE"
-
as i said before ALL the Batman films have had good and bad points, I'd just dont know why they wont just film the damn comics...or at least get the comic writers to write the script.... take Batman: Year One or The Killing Joke film them and ....
-
He was also one of the Swill brothers from the short lived Adventures of Brisco County Jr. starring Bruce Campbell. Most people probably won't even know what I'm talking about.
-
Anyone who calls someone else "son" should should be embarassed of his or her self. That said, you did call yourself an old turd. Oh, and Begins was visionary, Batman '89 was simply idiosyncratic, like every other Burton film.
-
It was kind of weird watching Batman go around killing people. I think it's the only time it's ever been done.
-
Batman and the Joker go hand to hand and in the latest trailer it looks like a bit of that in there. Their confrontations need to be up close and personal
-
Yeah, it was pretty great. It got canceled after only one season. It may have been one of the most under rated television shows of all time. You can't get much better than Bruce Campbell as a cowboy going after the gang who killed his father.
-
They've never highlighted characters on screen like Joe Chill, Carmine Falcone, Sal Maroni, or even Lucius Fox before. Not until Batman Begins. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Leslie Tompkins, Harvey Bullock, or even a young Babs Gordon. Nolan is following the medium and staying true to the mythology. As long as he continues on that vein, I know I'm going to dig it. As for making it real, I think because of the medium, it translates well. If you're watching something real, it's easier to except subject-matter grounded in reality. Catwoman, Black Mask, Maxie Zeus, Riddler, Penguin, Ventriliquist, Bane, Mad Hatter, and Hugo Strange would all fit in this universe. We've already seen Zsasz, Scarecrow, Two-Face, and modified versions of Ra's and the Joker. To sum it all up: me likey.
-
I think Begins was visionary not because of the story elements, but because of the universe Nolan created in which those story elements were told. I personally have never seen a comic book character brought to life in such a rich, textured, and downright realistic world before. And I'm not a comics reader, so Nolan's universe was really the main appeal for me.
-
Yeah, I've thought about that. I can't ever remember seeing reruns of it. It would be perfect for Sci-Fi.
-
Would be awesome Nolan villains. All they would have to do is make them brutal without being a cartoon. Imagine Machine from 8MM in a Batman movie. That's what they should do with Bane.
-
she's sort of attractive.
-
I think Mad Hatter and Ventriloquist would be interesting too, if they were done right.
-
you cock smoking dick gobblers.
-
ran an article today about Batman and, in particular, Ledger...written by some guy from the LATimes after the screening last night...the user comments on that thread are pretty fucking funny...lots of stuff about Ledger winning Oscars for movies made 10 years from now...good stuff.
-
What a tool.
-
not everyone wants to know what happens to Dent at the end of the movie or who dies. Heat sucks? LMFAO
-
Specifically, whether you can tell what the fuck is going on, this time? I don't want to read the spoilers, but that has been a nagging question about this movie since the first one came out.
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
Just hope that there is not too much crowding of characters.
-
My review was a lot better when it had paragraph breaks in it. Beaks is a moron because I never said it was the best comic book ever. Honestly, I had more fun with The Incredible Hulk, mostly because it has a better score and I'm heavily influenced by music.
I'd rather watch paint dry than watch Heat. I never said that I didn't like Batman Begins, just that I didn't cream my pants over it. I'm not into artsy fartsy shit; I like fast paced action movies, so hopefully that clarifies my point of view a little bit.
Let me put it this way. Unless they pull an Alien:Resurrection, Two Face won't be in the next one. And yeah, the letter is Alfred's secret. I didn't shit myself over TDK, but it was really good. I might prefer Batman Returns, because let's face it, Heath Ledger isn't better than Michelle Pfeiffer.
I AM NOT A TOOL! But I was really stoned when I saw the movie, and sometimes I enjoy a movie less when I smoke too many blunts. Know what I mean? Like sometimes you like the movie more, but sometimes you just wanna get the fuck out of there and eat a Big Mac. I experienced that due to it's long running time.
And I have a life and don't spend all day on Talkback, so don't waste your time asking me a million questions, because I probably won't read them.
PEACE!
-
Damn You MCMLXXVI
-
trust me!
-
pull your head out of your asses and take a look again. ok now put your head back in cause your face is ugly. batman 89 is well made movie version of batman, probly the best you were gonna get after the 1969 batman that was the biggest mental image up until then. good movie, good style, good performances, a good way to end the 80's. batman returns was a blast for me, a christmas tradition every year. it did take me a few years to realize it though, didn't like it at first. but the catwoman made it much easier to watch, then i realized how sick penguin was and how cool a circus gang could be. yes very over the top, but come on it had christopher walken, and some great performances, michael kearon rocked. glad to say the next two batman flicks never grew on me.
-
That word "visionary" gets thrown around so often these days, I think it has different definitions to everyone.
-
Batman Returns IS magic. As good as The Dark Knight is, nothing in it evokes goosebumps like the scene where Michelle Pfeiffer walks into her apartment and proceeds to go batshit crazy and transform into Catwoman. That scene is one of the most moving scenes in any movie I've ever seen. From the moment when she drones "honey, I'm home" to her reaction to the messages on the answering machine, shredding her stuffed animals in the food processor, shattering the fluorescent sign so it says "Hell Here." FUCK! That scene is AMAZING! And Michelle Pfeiffer, lookin all crazy and demented, is BEYOND fuckable. Let's face it, none of the Batman movies are an accurate translation of the comics, but the way Danny Elfman's score is weaved seamlessly into a tragic fairy tale about a misunderstood penguin freak and a sexually frustrated secretary is moving in the most darkly comic sort of way. And there are so many amazing moments in that movie. When Penguin bites off that dude's nose, when Miss Gotham gets attacked by bats, when Catwoman eats the parakeet, and of course when Bruce and Selena realize each other's secret identity's while they dance to that kick ass Siouxsie & the Banshee's song. I could watch that movie all day everyday. Sure, it's awesome when Heath Ledger does the "pencil trick." Everyone in the audience ate it up. And The Dark Knight is one of the best movies this year, but Batman Returns is one of the best motherfucking movies EVER! I'm gonna go watch it right now before I bust a nut thinking about it.
-
Man, thank you. I've always felt the same way about the Michelle Pfeiffer apartment scene. There's something terrible about watching her go insane and destroying all of her pretty girl things. It's disturbing as hell and almost makes me sick to watch.
-
I really hope it does live up to they hype... Fuck! I can't wait any longer.. and its going to be hard to avoid all the damn spoilers! oh and Heat doesn't suck!
-
so Two_face is for sure for sure for sure done for? As for Batman Returns, I always found it a fairly worthy follow-up to B89, in spite of its weirdness. Danny DeVito was a good choice as Penguin, and that "Hell here" bit always made me smile.
-
can you answer my question, then? is two-face for sure gone at the ned?
-
not "ned"
-
Yeah, if you are telling the truth, please tell us about two-face.
-
He was imitating Grissom aka Jack Palance. Are you old enough to even know who Jack was? Just curious, because I thought it was pretty obvious.
-
Thanks.
All Charlie Murphy that is some serious detective work.
Your almost spot on.
Enjoy it. -
Hey, man. What do you mean by that? Is 2-face really supposed to be gone at the end?
-
i apologize for being a dick after your review was posted the other day, you have been proven correct. So, my synopsis is valid?
-
Now you can't pop in and tease us and then split. Is there any truth to 2-Face being gone at the end?
-
Everyone thinks any of the Spider-Mans were good? Especially that POS 2nd one, with that ridiculous "crucifixion" scene and all the whining and the crying. Fuck me, that was not SpiderMan. And Tobey is NOT Spidey! Jesus Dick Suckin' Christ that tril was terrible.
-
has anyone seen the rambo 3 sly vs. clint TB around here? Just went up into thin air
-
i don't want to say i agree with you, because i don't feel as strongly as you do, but i always found the Spidey flicks to be... not that great. Part 2 is my favorite, but I don't consider it the best comic book movie ever. not even top 3. There's some good stuff in it, but it's not legendary. and i agree that Tobey is miscast as peter parker. seeing topher grace's enthusiasm in part 3 really made me wish someone else had gotten cast as peter. (not necessarily topher grace, but someone with the same fun screen presence...) tobey barely cracked a smile in all three movies, and even though peter got picked on and stuff, he is a more or less content kid who really embraces his alter ego. i rarely got that feeling in the trilogy. as for Part 3, it was awful, I don't like talking about it.
-
Throw us a freakin' bone here!
-
saerch your feleings u know it to be true. lolz
-
Sorry to flame but asking a million times and no one answering you should give you a hint.
-
These talkbacks suck. Thanks a lot Duffer63 and Your Moms Box. You could have rescued us from the boredom.
-
it just reeks of some magazine critic wrote it and then diddled his dick with the horseshit "clever" word-play. Grotesque and nauseating.
-
The scene where Catwoman wrecks her apartment one of the most moving scenes in any film? I just finished watching returns for first time in years, it isn't THAT good. De Vito is awesome, Keaton, however, is 'The Happening' bad as batman. BB is better acting and dialogue wise, but BR feels more iconic due to Burton's direction. I think BB is more enjoyable overall though.
-
What the fuck are you talking about? Duffer answered dozens of our questions the other day. Guess you don't know about that. Apparently, he just popped in today to fuck with us. Ordinarily, I'd be offended at your petty little comment, but these talkbacks suck so bad today, I don't even give a shit. I'd rather be flamed than wait for one idiotic post every 15 minutes.
-
Superman: The Movie
-
Pfffhahahahahaha.
-
how AWESOME would it be to have Bale and Odonnel team up for Part 3, maybe a subtle bridge acknowledging that this is really a continuation of previous batmans, heck he can even pick up a nipples-suit and turn toward bale with a wink "whattya think? Bale just has a grim Patrick Bateman stare and he goes "fine, but chicks dig the nipples" and they ride off. Robin gets his own mini-style red colored jet-wheel thing to ride on, it's unconventional where he has to lie down and strap himself in, very flat based to avoid bullets or sharpnel and they BLAST off into the night to fight crime! Nolan i hope you're intently reading this.
-
"Yeah, if you are telling the truth, please tell us about two-face."
"Is 2-face really supposed to be gone at the end?"
"Is there any truth to 2-Face being gone at the end?"
Though I do like your thoughts about Bane and some of the other characters. -
He falls. With style.
-
i've said it a long time ago. not flashy, gritty, grounded in realism, there are even some similarities between michael corleone and bruce wayne. i hoped TDK would be the godfather 2, good to know that it is. And one of the best things i love with nolan's work is the non-obvious cgi. I'm so fucking glad to be alive during nolan's time.
-
they tried to make more out of a simple cops and robbers movie than it needed to be, to the point where it was masquerading as something operatic and melodramatic. all that cartoony family shit could have been left out, as well as the mini-stories of every extra and secondary character no one gives two shits about, and they also made it corny by somehow making it all one big last ditch gamble, the badguys who've been doing this for years all of a sudden have too much "heat" so they decide it's too scary and need to pull one more heist and then leave to their vacation dreamplaces? fuck that awful excuse for more drama. also shit that doesnt make sense, they make the robber crew be so meticulous, slick, professional tight-knit that they hire a loose cannon psycopath and dont bother to check his history. nice one!
-
Sorry to be such a tease! Hate to be the one to break it to you but Two Face falls from a serious height off of a building site. Batman and Gordan have a bunch of dialogue as Two Face is beside them dead on the ground. You dont see him in a coffin but you do see his funeral. He is a DEAD MAN. CM your almost spot on.
-
First, I must be really bored to even fall into this shit. Second, did you even read my above post? Third, I honestly don't know what point you are even trying to make. And most important, did you actually just go and collect all of my posts and copy them into your post? Christ, that's creepy and sick even for the talkbacks. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anybody do something so disturbing in all the years I've been here. Go stalk somebody else you fucking freak. BTW, this is why I was hoping Duffer would come and chat with us. At least you can have an intelligent conversation with him.
-
Fair enough, Thanks. I'm just very bored right now.
-
Sorry these talkbacks were so boring for you today but it is Friday night! I Thank God I havent been sitting infront of the computer all day like the other day.
-
Sup? And ditto to you. I know you guys don't want to spoil the movie for people and I appreciate that. It's just with all this 2-Face talk today, I've been wondering if it is going to be Venom all over again. An underdeveloped character that only gets minutes of screen time before being killed off.
-
I was thinking about this today. In some ways its annoying he is killed off because they really could of utilised the dynamic of The Joker and Two Face in Batman 3 but his death does work in this context as in some ways this movie is more his story than any other character. I kinda get the immpression that your a fricken huge Two Face fan so Im thinking your gonna be a tad dissapointed!
-
Couldnt agree with you more. Thats why I dont really mind about Two Face as it made dramatic sense. It also says to the viewer that you dont really know where this franchise is going. Everyone is not just in it for the money. There is real artistry on show.
-
No, not really. I just thought that it was going to be Two Face in the 3rd movie after being set up in the 2nd. I think a lot of people thought that was how it was going to be. What I find funny about it is how so many people have been saying that it's good that DC quit killing off every villain like they did in the past. And how people thought they had learned their lesson after the previous Batman movies and SM3. That's ironic.
-
You have a point. I would never compare this film to SM3 though. That film really lost its way. Two many choir boys and only one priest so to speak. It seems my riddler theory is also gaining weight!
-
I think we may only ever get a glympse of The Joker in Arkham in B3. I cant imagine we will get another Batman with The Joker as the main protaganist. Atleast not in this franchise. No other actor will want to take this on. Its too grand a task and will be considered sacrilege by many. It looks like they could be setting up The Riddler in this one but you just never know.
-
keep his corpse from rotting and sort of insert robotic animatronic joints inside and program it to do many mannerisms off his TDK impersonation. easy!

Batman Returns is the greatest S & M flick for kids eva!!!!!
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
Every time I saw it at the cinema, parents walked their kids out of that flick. Burton rules(hey Tim, I won't mention Planet of the Apes).
-
Yeah, I guess so. But I'm not sure which other character could carry a Nolan Batman movie. All the other ones are second rate. Unless they did a brutal Bane or Black Mask like I mentioned before. I think it's a little soon to see Batman get his back broken though.
-
I would love to see Bane. I loved that storyline as a kid. Dont think he will be the next one though. Who knows with who they are gonna go with or whatever type pf story they decide to tell. All I know is I hope they keep on improving on each one. Did you see chud.com did a thing talking about all the hyperbole surrounding Heathe's performance?
-
Here's a non spoiler question for you. Do you think Ledger's death had anything to do with Dent dying in the movie, or was it already a done deal? It just seems strange to me that they would kill off two face and not Scarecrow or the Joker.
-
re: chud.com. No, do you have a link?
-
I dont believe there were any reshoots for the film after Heath died. That would lead me to believe that Two Face always died in the Nolans version of the script. So done deal.
-
The Batman Forever Two-face died from falling, too. I thought they could be a little more original than that.
-
tee hee they make fun of 'harry knowles type personalities'...hee hee
-
I dont think its a case of being original so much as what works best for the film. Most people who watch the film arent going to notice when Heath's Joker uses a line that Jack's joker did before him. It just works at that moment. Two Face death the similarities are just coincidence and again in this case it just makes sense.
-
They do hae a point!
-
"Of course Christian Bales, Bruce Wayne is spot on, especially in showing bruces torment on how he has to handle the Joker."way to blow the possessive apostrophe twice in one befuddled sentence. what are they TEACHING kids these days?
-
joker fell. catwoman fell and came back to life. ra's crashed. penguin...what did penguin die of? i just remember his black blood choking up...don't remember how mr.freeze or poison ivy got caught... i think hero movies have to resort to ridiculous height falls because people in movies always get shot and die instantly, or get shot like 50 times and can keep walking and say last words...so, falling is final and tragic?too bad dent truly dies, i was hoping they were going to fake his death but he would really be M.I.A.the third needs the riddler, but can this reese kid really carry at least half a movie?
-
Again you are correct. Thats why I made the original comparison to The Godfather Part 2. They made that as a film. Not so much as a sequel or as a part of a trilogy. TDK feels the same.
-
Yeah but shit, almost every comic book movie kills off the villains at the end nowadays. That's what was supposed to be unique about Nolan's series, that it could be an ongoing story with the same characters.
-
an explosion and , like, tenth degree burns to the head don't.
duffer- is there an indication that time passes after dent's scarring and his vengeance? or is he like up and out of the hospital withh exposed skull the next day? that part worries me. -
why would we want to see the joker again???? Even if done well, Batman has got enough villians without the need to bring the Joker back again
-
Yeah, that's how it was in the Long Halloween or Dark victory (one of the two). That could easily be a movie in itself.
-
There were no reshoots after Ledger died, duffer. What we see is what they intended us to see.
Three weeks and counting. -
This Reese kid. Thats an interesting one. He is quite good in the role he plays but it would be one hell of a transformation from that character to the riddler. He hasnt done much to make you think that he would be up to the task. He was in Iron Man but I dont remember him. Pretty cool for him being in two of the biggest and best movies of the summer.
-
Thought as much. Just trying to sooth young damage inc. He is bloody excited to see this movie!
-
That, sir, is an understatement.
-
Are you familiar with The Long Halloween or Dark Victory graphic novels? If so could that character you have been talking about be more like a Calendar man than the Riddler?
-
Was that villain ever one of the characters Nolan said would not work out in his Batman "world" he is creating? I remember Robin definitely not being something he would consider. But I can't remember if Riddler was.
-
Why thank you sir. If it makes you feel any better Ill be seeing it open night again. Im hated by some of my friends at the moment! As for the hyperbole. There is only going to be more and more of it due to the unfortunate events that happened outside of the film. Credit is most certainly due to all involved especially Heath but I think all the hyperbole may hinder it in some regards.
-
we think we know this: batman is a fugitive, two-face is dead, gordon is comissioner, joker is put away, rachel is dead.so what can they do now?the riddler is a constant pest, but not a major criminal. his hijinx literally get in the way of batman's progress for justice. maybe joker's anarchy has spawned a few copycats too. maybe a certain obsessed female fan, wink wink? does the whole marraige in jail thing like richard ramirez (the night stalker) did. very based in reality that psychos attract groupies, even while incarcerated. black mask would be a good villain. the anti-bruce. some reference should be made to poison ivy as an eco-terrorist of sorts (think how julianne moore was portrayed as a terrorist by the gov't in children of men) she could simultaneously be wooing bruce wayne as pamela eisley while thwarting wayne enterprises in her off time, getting a real kick out of it. throw in a news flash about batman catching a pedophile named jervis tetch, have bruce go undercover in disguise in a seedy mob club to do research on a newly rumored crime boss, only to find out he's the opening act (ventriloquist)..news reports of city sewer workers going missing (killer croc)...for some reason i don't care to see catwoman yet because burton followed up the joker with catwoman.
-
I'm pretty sure that he said he could never do a Penguin in his movies. Not sure about the Riddler.
-
I dont think he is Calender man. I would lean more towards the riddler. If this one used Heat as a source of inspiration. How cool would B3 using those stories as a basis and Silence Of The Lambs as inspiration.
-
of all of batman's villains, the riddler is about the only one that's truly just a man, and not really insane, just obsessive. (forget the comics shit where he's been bane-juiced and all).
-
Yeah, I think that's what the original Calendar Man was supposed to be.
-
U can always rely on chid when things get a little bit OTT on this site.
-
That's a good question. I don't think they would do any of the supernatural villains like Ivy, Croc or say Grundy. They could make the Hatter into a pedophile, but that would be totally dark. On the other hand, that has been implied of the Hatter before, hasn't it?
-
..the riddler wouldn't have been established in TDK and would just come out of nowhere, and be completely unknown. he'd be as crafty as the unabomber, hannibal lechter and kevin spacey in seven rolled into one, but not as murderous at all. like the villain of saw, if anyone died it would sort of be their own faults that did it. he would be totally about judging and exposing dirt on high profile people. in his own mind, a hero like batman. he would not be seen through out the entire movie, until near the end (like in seven). he would wreak havoc on gotham's power, water, computers, banking...etc...like the unabomber he would be a anti-tech nutso upset with man's arrogance, ignorance, and lack of self reliance. in the end when he is uncovered he's like a crippled young genius or something, home bound or something. hateful of people who take the world for granted, and he was able to do everything via computer, mail, courier and blackmailing other people.
-
But Harley Quinn may actually work in Nolan's world.
-
This deserves to be repeated
-
But it would seem that Gotham Knight DVD is intent to address those villains that would not appear on Nolan film, so they explore them and elaborate them via the animation (to incredible glory I am hearing, i.e. Killer Croc), if Riddler is not IN Gothan Knight I would only see that as raising his chances of a Nolan take on him. Maybe I am completely wrong, just throwing that out there.
-
Do you think a storyline like The Long Halloween or Dark Victory could be done if they replaced Two-Face with another character?
-
in that plot of mine, bruce would get to do some real detective work, and a crippled genius riddler who can work out of a home or hideout is anti-bruce because he doesn't have the money or resources. when i said anti-tech, i didn't mean computers and cell phones(because obviously he would use them)but other things that man can longer live without out of lazyness. in fact using computers, cameras, phones and other things in his plans and being anti-tech would still suit him because it would be gleefully ironic to destroy men using the very tools that they need and he hates. a man who takes an hour to get dressed in the morning would really hate a billionaire playboy who globetrots in a day and dares to complain about anything. he'd hate bruce wayne but admire the batman because he'd see himself as a hero...maybe even offering his services to batman as a silent partner of investigation, but is refused. or when batman starts to investigate and fuck up his plans he feels really confused and betrayed.
-
Anybody know anything about the Deathstroke action figure being released with this movie? The story popped up, then went away. I know the figures are "based on the universe" Nolan created, but does that not strike anyone as an odd choice to just toss into the figure line? Deathstroke? He doesn't even live in Gotham. I thought maybe it'd be AMH, since he was quoted as saying "I play a big multi-million dollar secret character that's an anti-batman type", and now they say he's just a reporter. I saw the report he did, so maybe he is just a reporter...but why does the Deathstroke action figure exist? Why?
-
Do you know any other villains in Gotham Knight?
-
i only know what i've read on wiki about long halloween and dark victory, which isn't much. ironically i worked at a comic book store when those were first out, but didn't read much because i was avoiding accidental inspiration to my own stuff....heh, sorry.
-
I remember hearing about that about the Deathstroke action figure too. I also remember AMH saying something like that. I think everyone who has seen the movie says he is only a reporter though. Either way, it's interesting.
-
doesn't really change anything...after all, batman goes to hong kong in tdk!...it confuses me too though. in the comics deathstroke is now a pretty neutral, almost comedic asassin (like killing 'bad guys')..only recently being made a baddy on teen titans, being called 'slade' because they didn't think DEATHstroke was appropriate for a cartoon.
-
I know Dead Shot is in it.
-
I can't take a review like Gary DP's seriously with comments like that. Scorsese said it was one of the best films of the '90s... I'll take Marty's opinion over Gary DP's hands down.
-
they're pretty much the same guy. kinda weird. deadshot supposedly wears bright colors (an odd choice for an assassin) because he thinks he's so good it doesn't matter, and dares anyone to try to snipe him. i think the same is said of deathstroke, who wears bright orange and blue (that's stealthy WHERE?)....i think the deathstroke doll is a red herring, made to pad out a line of toys that was short on villains -one realistic joker,a cartoonish joker and variant, and a two-face doll. i don't think they made another scarecrow. the deathstroke and two-face aren't even in stores yet that i know of.
-
Well, It's been awhile since I read them, but I think one or both of them had Two-Face resurfacing after being presumed dead. I think he was also controlling the mob or other villains or something too. I think that's why everyone thought that would be the storyline for Batman 3. It could be a similar story with a different villain, I guess, if Dent really is dead.
-
i think it was duffer that brought up the idea of going with a HUSH like story. i dunno though, the hush story is almost too reliant on lots of characters, and histories of robins and stuff. If heath was still alive, i would have no problem with another joker caper, if done right. but without him, i honestly don't know what path they should take.
-
i'm not saying anything new that hasn't been spoiled for me in this and other posts. sorry if mine was the first you stumbled across. i didn't invent these spoilers. refuck. drink piss.
-
Is it possible that there are two endings for TDK, and that they would show only one to the "sneak peak " audiences and a different one on opening day? Do studios do this? Has anyone heard of this happening with any other movie?
-
How's the score?
-
that would be awesome. and quite the JOKE, eh?
-
Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Dead Shot.
-
What's the main plot of Hush, anyway?
-
changed my life. literally changed the way i draw now too, god damnit. i went from over detailed, crosshatched comics to clean, curvi-angular style. not a copycat, but it changed my art path. BTAS had the best characterizations of the villains yet, and i doubt will be usurped any time soon.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Hush
remove anyspaces, but not the underlines. it's pretty convoluted.too much for a movie, IMO -
Now that would be an awesome Batman movie, I forgot about that one.
-
i know they never give a true origin, and apparently he makes a few remarks as to what happened to his mouth (an idea i like because it borrows from the killing joke- the joker either doesn't remember or purposely lies about his origins)---but do they mention WHERE he came from. was he an escapee from arkham in BB? re-watching BB they really stress just how bad and how many escaped..or do the mobsters- having heard about joker's ways, 'bring him in from out of town'?
-
Honestly the only thing I could comment about the score is that I noticed at one or two points that they were building on the batman begins hero theme. Maybe even hints of the original Batman theme coming through. Other than that its pretty pedestrian. Im outta here. Talk to you on another talk back.
-
A couple things.
I think that there are so few villains in Gotham Knight my previous guesstimation is not really worth much. I still hope Riddler is in Nolan's part 3 though.
That leads me to the next thing. If you guys remember the article "Warner was so pleased with The Dark Knight that they hope Chris returns for a third one". I think Chris had always intended/envisioned a trilogy (only) - even though he takes it one step at a time, so that seems automatic.
Toss in that quote from Bale way back when he said that the way TDK ends, "it would be great if they got to do a third one". Everyone will love TDK but .. and this gonna become personal opinion a bit, but . once Nolan continues the comics film tradition of the second film (the part 2 of a trilogy) becoming the best... how exactly will he develop that.. well... often terrible part 3. Don't get me wrong, I have like 200% trust in Nolan to show the damn globe how you do a part 3. But still, pondering over how he might approach it is intriguing. -
was good, or i heard the composer saying he was coming up with something haunting playing off just three notes for a sort of joker theme.
-
Don't forget zom-bot's question.
-
The Joker just shows up fully formed at the beginning. He isnt a hired hand by the mob. At first he is working for himself and working at expanding his group of vigilantes. He gets brought it by the other gangs to take Batman on. He only has two maybe three bits of exposition. Some fanboys might have an issue with the origins of the smile but I liked it.
-
i hear ya. a good 2 is usually the best you can hope for in a trilogy. in every movie series i've seen. i trust nolan too, but really- how do you top the joker?
-
I hear you. It seems the third part of any trilogy is destined to become shit.
-
Peter Jackson laid down the roadmap for how to finish of a trilogy the way it should be done. Stay true to the material.

why would you want to work for the joker?
you never know when he's gonna off you in front of the other goons just to make a point. TDK's joker isn't in it for the money, so the pay must suck. unless he has a 'work for me and keep what you can carry' policy. also, working for the new most powerful guy in town would be good status...if of course he doesn't off ya. -
Yeah, especially if they killed off two face. They would have to have a really great and epic storyline like Hush or No Man's Land to succeed.
-
You may not have heard of them but they are all equal films within this trilogy. Not a comic book movie though that is for sure.
-
Spot on but you forgot
1 to shout out first! -
Its funny how much Heat I got for mentioning Heat . . .
-
Yeah, I'll bet there's been 50 of them so far. Just because of one sentence in one review. Christ.
-
i'll piss off alot of people and say i didn't really like them. didn't buy tobey as spidey or peter. didn't buy mary jane, HATED the goblin costume. even if the suit was army prototype, he fabbed up that mask overnight?the action was handled well and inventively. raimi's strong suit. the origin and 'learning' scenes were cute.spiderman 2 had the same strong action and camerawork. didn't get the losing of powers just out of self doubt. felt like an ad for viagra or impotence. liked doctor octopus being not an evil man, just a hurt and selfish man. spiderman three took that 'pity villain' concept and ran it into the ground, played willy nilly with their own story from pt 1 with uncle ben, fucked venom up the ass after building eddie brock well enough despite being an out of the blue character, and gave us the hobgoblin as an extreme snowboarder.
-
Since you're still here, what do you think of the theory that there could be 2 TDK endings?
-
I think I just got that. ;)
-
Did you hear anything about the Two Face ending?
-
I hadnt heard that they had filmed different endings. I was told that the print I saw was the final product. They were certainly very careful with it after the screening. I may be wrong but Im almost positive that what I saw is what you will be seeing in the cinema. It would be pretty cool if I was wrong though.
-
How interesting. Ha!
-
Ha! Bit slow on the uptake. What time is it in your part of the world?
-
it would have been awesome to end batman 3 with an introduction crossover into a justice league movie. after such a realistic series, how cool would it have been to have bruce sitting in the batcave monitoring shit, and a breeze ruffles some papers on his desk..but he doesn't notice or doesn't care-far shot out, we see red boots hover gently down to the floor of the cave and start walking towards bruce and desk, now small in background. camera is slowly panning up a red cape...cut back to bruce, who turns in his chair and seems to already know about this person and their arrival and says 'you're in the wrong town, and i don't need your help'.
and then we hear a voice- but we're still behind the shoulder of superman- say ' but we need yours.' supe's actor is never shown, cut to black. -
Did I just learn a secret or am I just tired?
-
are there never to be revealed.
-
dammit! How could I have missed THAT? Sometimes even more than one shouts First--never happened to me personally, of course...
-
That's actually what I thought when people started talking about Hush. I think I may have read the first chapter to that. Wasn't that the one where Batman knocks Superman out?
-
Wasn't Superman in Dark Knight Returns?
-
BTW, you are officially my new hero.
-
it wouldn't even have to mean crossover, but i think it would be interesting, in a nod at the end of batman three, to acknowledge that yes- batman and gotham are grounded in reality, but here we see that there is a world outside of gotham, that bruce isn't the only costumed freak in it, and make fanboys piss themslves without nolan or the nolan verse ever actually being dragged into the possible mud of standard superteam movies. it would acknowledge the option, but go no deeper. any superman or JLA movie afterwards wouldn't actually be tied to the nolanverse, but i think it batman three 'christened the ship' as it were, it might give dc the luck and plausibility and common sense it needs to do other films right. just sucks that if they did it now, folks would scream 'marvel ripoff'
-
Does anyone know if the new Punisher movie is supposed to be a part of this new Marvel universe?
-
Ha thanks. It didnt take much. You have just made my day!
-
Yeah, but I think they'll probably try it anyway. They are just itching to do a JL movie. God knows why.
-
not that each sequel needs to top the last, but it's gonna take something big to top the joker, i say a tip of the old dc hat is the only thing powerful enough. it would be like the first time you saw the alien skull in predator 2....i freaked my shit OUT back then. but marvel beat them to this punch, and, well, we all know where aliens and predators ended up....ugh.for the record, i think marvel will not be able to live up to the crossover hype they are pitching. i say we get one other good movie out of this- either an iron man 2 or another solo effort (ant man sounds promising) but i think the avengers will go astray.
-
Where Marvel has all these characters standing on their own, respectively, in films - and a group (Avengers) flick would be simply cool..
DC might be trying to get a group film going to simply garner interest in those DC characters in order to justify unique films based on the characters included. And go from there. (Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman) -
I agree. Especially if they try to add a Thor or Ant Man. Some characters just don't belong on the big screen. And what the hell villain would they have? The Leader ala Hulk?
-
"Some characters just don't belong on the big screen." Not EVERY character can be adapted successfully. Wonder Woman has got to be the most difficult one in my mind. So many, many reasons why.
-
Anybody remember a while back when they said they were going to have Talia Agul and someone else noone had ever heard of for villains in that movie? No wonder they scrapped it.
-
a batman acknowledgement of superman would be 500 times more powerful than a seond rate hero like iron man crossing over with hulk at the end of the flick. before this movie there were alot of american that didn't even know who iron man was, but everyone wants to see a batman/superman cameo.
-
fin fang foom or some other ridiculous big monster....rich, smart supervillains are quite boring. unless they have an army or 10,000 robots or something
-
memorable Avengers villains? I may have heard of Loki but that's about it.
-
How do I say this without being mean....
I know you're going to continue to ask this question a million times, but Two Face is dead. You see his dead body. You see his funeral. Unless in the sequel he digs his way out of his grave like The Bride in Kill Bill Vol 2, then he's not going to be in the sequel. When I implied in my review that he's another Venom, I wasn't implying that he's underdeveloped, because the whole fucking movie is about his character. The reason I compared him to Venom is because aesthetically, he's a really cool looking character with the fucked up face and everything. So when he dies it's kinda like "that sucks, we won't get to look at his awesome fucked up face anymore." But I promise you two face is dead. And I promise you that the version you see will have the same ending that I saw. And The Joker lives, so I guess they could recast him for the sequel. I would guess The Riddler and I agree with Duffer that the guy who finds Batman's identity could very much become that character. I, myself, would love to see Clayface. I know it's not "realistic" but neither was Scarecrow with the fear gas and demonic looking Batman and all that shit. So they could do a cool Clayface. The monster aspect may not be "realistic" but his story sure is if they go with the Matt Hagen thing from the animated series. I think that would be great. I actually heard a rumor that this one ended with something on tv about an actor who uses an anti-aging cream that turns his finger to caramel. Unfortunately that rumor isn't true, but it would have been cool. -
another reviewer/critic says they think watchmen is coming at the right time, just before the hero movie wave is over, and in itself is a spoof/commentary of them, and the second string movies planned afterwards will bomb. it seems punisher is a step in that direction already, and with marvel already tainting iron man 2 with shame and controversy, doesn't sound promising.

As far as I know both are owned by Warners. If JL makes money then perhaps it may happen. Any of you remember Batman Vs Superman? There was a nod to it in I AM LEGEND. A billboard in times square. Just seeing the logo was cool. Some people felt that it was more than just a joke but a quite deliberate move to place that within the film that was showing 6 minuts of TDK before it.
-
I think you have a good point. It does sound like Marvel is going to fuck the IM franchise before it really even begins. And I think Marvel only has Wolverine for 2009, don't they? Yes, I can see the superhero genre going downhill fast.
-
they took notes from batman's reboot and took the source material seriously. spiderman worked because it was 'fun'. xmen 1 and 2 worked because brian singer, another good director, was in control and it was also such a first- darker, more complex heroes...and they condensed ALOT of material pretty damn well. then xmen 3 happened and we see how that ended up. A key to having any good movie is a good director and people who are taking it seriously. If they hire schlub directors or get cheapy, they'll go bad. i also have the feeling if we get too many 'serious' superhero movies eventually the public will miss corny ones, and in 20 years batman will swing toward campy again, and other heores go towards blind heroism/patriotism/do-goodery.
-
Thanks, I guess. It just surprised me that they would do something like that after the reaction they got from SM3. Really, I don't care. Of course I'll watch the movie anyway. That was just something we were talking to Duffer about quite a while ago.
-
it's been damn refreshing to toss ideas around tonight and not sift through cock jokes and put downs. guess all those guys are out seeing bad movies tonight.
-
Agreed. This summer is the zentith of comic book filmmaking. So much money will be made by the end of the summer that things will start to change and studios will start to make their influences felt. History always repeats itself. There will be one or two gems amongst the next crop though. JL just wont work. It wont be a classic. Its not possible for it to be. WATCHMEN on the other hand. Im bloody ravenous to see it.
-
Jeez. It's a REVIEW, not a retelling.
-
No shit, I was thinking the same things. All the little 12 year olds must be in bed already.
-
Likewise. Ive very much enjoyed chatting to you both and numerous others over the past few days. I am off to hit the hay. I normally say this and end up hanging around for Damage to ask me one more time if Two Face is really dead as in dead six feet under as in never coming back as in he is in hell as in he is a rotting corpse! Kidding. Good luck and enjoy.
-
Ha. I just gotta freakin know man! Hey there was one thing I meant to ask you. Where the hell did you see it anyway?
-
If I told you I would have to kill you. Goodnight and goodluck. Talk to you in another talkback.
-
I'm outta here too. Later.
-
nah, just kidding, but i do gather you are from the UK. any other people in the nolan payroll/cast that was born in 63 (nolan was born in 70). maybe i'm just too used to the shit slinging in here, but you speak like someone involved in it, still guarding your choice of words....hey if you are connected, get me a job doing storyboards. later guys!
-
i mean the batman production, not the mindless shitslinging :D
-
It was in Variety that the first screening was at the Pathe Imax in Amsterdam as part of Cinema Expo.
-
By saying you didn't like Heat you immediately render irrelevant your opinions on anything...
Ever... -
Chris Nolan is ENGLISH, dickhead. Born and raised in London. Oh and thanks to your buddies for spoiling the pencil trick. Go shove one up your arse.
-
..collectively
-
and as for deniro/pacino, gone are the 70s/80s when they actually ACTED, here theyre prepping for the paycheck not give a shit phase, one is bored to piss, the other screaming his lungs off.
-
This video is way too cool!
http:// black20.com/black20-trailer-park/battle-batmans -
These superhero movies are so watered down and made to appeal to the widest possible audience that they are never edgy or really powerful or moving. I know everyone hear loves to anticipate a new film and then try so hard to love it, but 2 years down the road, this will probably seen as just "OK" like BB. I am still looking forward to this film but I kind of expect to be disappointed, just like with Iron Man.
-
Why some of you guys ask for spoilers from the people who already saw this movie? I've seen it already, and I'm really glad that I knew next to nothing about the plot. But hey, what do I know...
-
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
Hey! Ain't seen this yet, but,in the trailer, where cowl-less Batmans sitting in,looks like a penthouse...there seems to be a guy slumped in the opposite chair...without a head ! Anyone else spot that !?
-
I know it's not a popular choice, but I still like it. The costumes, production design and cinematography are all beautiful, Danny Elfman's score is still my favourite superhero music, and I love that it's an entire film about freaks and misfits, which is right up my allley.Still, I am starting to get a bit more excited about this new Batman shenanigans. The Heat comparison is very intriguing. Also, it's got Aaron Eckhart in it, and I like that guy. He played one of the great movie pricks in In The Company Of Men, I reckon.
-
Do I get a badge or summink?P.S. 501st!!!!!11
-
The only reason anybody likes it is because two great actors are in it, but its a pretty disposable and pointless. Be honest with yourselves and watch it again. Its really not a good movie, it just has a lot of star power.
-
Heat is one of the best movies I have seen in the past 15 years. It's great because it has character development, which so many movies today fail to capture. It gets inside the lives of the good guys (Pacino), and the bad guys (Deniro & Kilmer), and the toll their jobs take on their marriages, kids, etc. It shows that no matter how well they do their jobs, the personal lives are not perfect, and that leaves them with an empty life in some ways. Heat has everything: a great story, a great cast, and damn good shoot out scene after the bank robbery. I mean who wouldn't love a movie with the bad guys played by DeNiro, Kilmer and Sizemore?

TDK is trying to be more then a comic book movie, and I can't wa
by romanocc
I haven't seen TDK, but I give Nolan alot of credit for trying to do something different in this genre. Sorry guys, but comic book movies are pretty lame these days, as they are so by the book paint by numbers movies that you walk in knowing exactly what will happen, and the movies are all about action & cgi instead of story & character development. TDK I believe is the opposite, as it is trying to explore these pyschies of Batman & Joker, and what makes these guys tick? I am pysched to see this movie, and couldn't care less about that Indy IV movie that came out in the summer, as that movie relied on the greatness of the original and all the nostalgia to get people in the theater. TDK still has to battle the demons of that awful Clooney Batman movie, so Nolan has to put out something that is great or nobody will go, compared to Lucas/Spielberg that can put out more shit sequels, and as long as that John Williams score is great, and Harrison Ford is on screen, the faithful will show up!
-
You philistines.
-
And I have seen it and examined it multiple times. If it has one problem it's that it tries to tackle one too many character...And Batman Begins, which I loved the first time, gets better and better every time I see it.
-
Thank you for your comment about continuity and Rachel Dawes. I still feel (see previous thread) that Christopher Nolan should reshoot the Katie Holmes scenes from Batman Begins. Nolan is a skilled enough director that he could do it. I have recently watched the film (with an eye for the Rachel Dawes scenes.) She appears in maybe eight minutes of the film. Maggie Gyllenhal, although not as attractive as Katie Holmes, is a much better actress IMHO.
-
Adam West and Cesar Romero back on the big screen again. Its been too long since the exploding shark and the lovely Miss Kitka! This movie will rock!
-
Alfred will have to put on the batsuit at some point, and have to stick out his chest and look verile to impersonate Batman!
-
So, does a Creeper spinoff starring AMH hit screens in 2011? Someone strip him down and paint him yellow, stat!
-
Unlike the first reviewer, I think the outcast theme in TDK will work. My impression is they have woven that into the dynamics between Batman and Harvey Dent pretty well. Eventually Batman atones for his ethical compromises (like spying, rendition) by taking the blame for Dent's murders. And in a third film Batman could be vindicated.
-
I feel you. This is compounded by the fact that there's apparently only one "knife being unsheathed" sound effect in existence.
-
but gotta agree that Heat really does suck. I have seen this movie repeatedly and it just bores the shit out of me everytime I watch it. Pacino: embarrassing overacting. DeNiro: sleep-enducing under-acting. Kilmer can't act. I never cared about any of the characters, and the movie is just too goddamn long for a standard cops-n-robbers type story. I'll admit, the Bob-n-Al coffee shop conversation was intense, and I will say that the gunfight in the middle of the film is worth the effort, it really is exciting, otherwise, Michael Mann has made much better movies.
-
Dark Knight will be every bit as fucking great as Spider-Man 2 and will leave us with high expectations for the third film, and that, as with that silly-ass, overlong turdfest that was Spider-Man 3, we will be vastly disappointed.
-
U make me feel like Danson. A work of genius.
-
Jeez, give TDK a chance why dont you, surely it wont be that bad.. Chocolate cake anyone?
-
I was fortunate enough to see the dark knight screning tonight at the Bridge IMAX theatre in Los Angeles. I was really excited about this movie, I knew it was going to be good, I knew it was going to be great. I had NO IDEA that would end up being A. not only the greatest comic book movie ever made, but B. one of my all time favorite movies ever.
I still dont understand how the guy who played the Joker is Heath Ledger. This isnt an oscar nomination wprthy performanmce, this is an oscar clinching perf. In fact i cant see how this movie cant be considered for best picture of the year. I'de much rather see this masterpiece than some oscar tearjerker set in the early 1800's. Heath Ledger is incredible, he makes your heart pound with intensity, he makes you feel for the fact that heath isnt with us to see this amazing performance and discuss it, he makes you forget the 2 words Jack. Nicholson. WHO??? When I heard this casting I thought no way, but way. way. I wont go into spoilers cause I dont think ANYONE should read spoilers for this movie.
Also suprising Aaron eckhart as Harvey Dent is brilliant. If Heath wasnt in this Eckhart would be the shining star of this movie. hell even Maggie Gyllenhall was great! Christian Bale IS Batman. Best Batman ever.
Jesus it sounds like I work for WB features but I dont, no affiliation what so ever. This is just one of the best movies I have ever seen. brilliant turns, Brilliant directing, Brilliant aciting. batman Begins looks like one of those Meet the Spartans/Not another Teen movie compared to the Dark Knight
Aliright I am done with my rant
-
I stopped reading when Gary DP stated he didn't like Batman Begins or Heat. What movie did you like DP? Hairspray, Grease, Ghost Rider? Why were you even there?
-
Unfortunately, they do that all the time in movies. Consider the squeal/ screech of brakes when a car comes to a stop. Why do they do this? Depending on the type of brake pads there could be some noise but come on! Or someone walking and they "enhance" the sound of the footsteps. Or someone flipping a light switch. Or striking a match. For some reason these sounds have to be loud and in Dolby Digital.
-
Cannot wait.
-
No Not at all
I loved BB. Its a FANTASTIC movie
I watched it thurs night again so it was fresh in my mind, but when you put the 2 together. TDK FAR exceeds BB. Its like X1 vs X2. BB plays like a movie. TDK plays like a 150 min scene. The hype that you are talking about is there but TDK, for me, exceeded that hype -
A little late, I know, but I know who he was impersonating... I just typed it the way he said it. I was referring to who the hell was Bob, his right hand man... looking back on it, Joker was like a Bond villian with an endless supply of disposeable bad guys -- most likely credited as Joker Goon #1, #2, etc. except for said Bob.
-
Scared the shit out of me. Heath Ledger's performance in my dream was Oscar worthy
-
I love Christopher Nolan's work, but Following was an incomprehensible mess of a film. Insomnia was mediocre at best.
-
that crap is just in the trailers. that's warners trying to explain a knife for the .000002 seconds it was on screen for the really, really short attention spanned. the joker's knife is not going to go 'schiiing' from hand to hand in the movies. relax. they add canned screams and schiiings in trailers ALL THE TIME just to grab attention.
-
This is the third greatest comic book adaption ever this summer... Went to see Iron Man and Hulk having my expectations pumped by early word. Enjoyed IM mostly due to RDJ's performance but was very underwhelmed by TIH. Didn't find either particularly enthralling. More or less the same reaction I had to Batman Begins...
-
thanks, that's my guilty pleasure stupid shirt design, and a damn good seller.
-
You GOTTA be FUCKIN KIDDIN ME...was no one in the damn Avid room with Nolan????? TRIM that bastard!!!!!!!!!!
-
Batman Begins was genius and this looks even better.
-
the following- is a good indie movie, but watch it again. the main character has a batman symbol on his door. oh how things come full circle.

personally, i don't thinkit was a slip, more like saying 'what other characters are left' -
Read somewhere that David Hyde-Pierce is being considered for The Riddler. He's slender enough to match our mental image of Riddler, though DH-P might have to buff up a little bit. And try not to think of him solely as Niles Crane - he's a talented actor and I think casting him against type will yield some interesting results. Carrey was too over-the-top, if you ask me. I betcha H-P could be surprisingly good in a villainous turn. As Ledger has proven, a great actor can make you forget you're looking at an actor and make you think only about the character.
-
...try to refrain from movie comparisons. As soon as the reviewer bashed "Heat" by Michael Mann... the reviewer lost all credibility to me.
-
I'm not falling for the hype, I'm not going as a tribute to Heath Ledger, I just want a superb Batman movie, and I dun want it spoiled.
-
I'll let personal opinions go for the burton vs batman begins argument but the fuckwits saying this will bomb need to choke on their cocks while sucking themselves off. Either TDK or wall e will be the biggest film of the year and it will be fairly tight..or ill eat my batman socks
-
Talk about your bad re-casting.....Maggie can't act worth a turtle turd, and she isn't even remotely attractive.

A movie can never be too long if it is a good one. Two of my favorite movies are Godfather and Godfather II. Always can watch them no matter the length. Getting more and more pumped everyday about this.
-
i've seen pics from a few years ago and she was 'cute'.
what happened before TDK i don't know but she does look like a dowdy old maid in this one. (and i don't mean hot french maid, i mean plain unmarried older woman!) -
Not that anyone gives a shit but... Anywho- B89 was cool for its time but now, after seeing BEGINS and from I have seen of TDK, SUCKS! B89 just seems so stupid now that I have seen the REAL Batman. RETURNS was HORRIBLE! It sucked when it was released and it sucks now! I couldnt wait to see RETURNS when it was released and I remember very well being EXTREMELY disappointed. You could easily tell it was all filmed on a high school theater stage for Gods sake! TERRIBLE! FOREVER was weird but IMO a lot better than RETURNS. FOREVER still cant hold a candle to BEGINS though. B&R was, well, you know, embarrassing. BEGINS was AWESOME! A REAL movie with REAL characters and fantastic story telling! TDK will no doubt be the best Batman movie of all time. Until , of course, the genius Nolan makes the 3rd film (with the Riddler!)
KEEP IT REAL! -
Ok, I know this isn't supposed to be in the same continuity as Tim Burton's Batman, or Paul Dini's animated adventures, but I'd be much happier if Nolan had kept the tidbit of a black Two-Face, plus Denzel Washington would be a FRICKIN' KICK-ASS Two-Face. Aaron Eckhart is too much of a plain vanilla forgettable actor.
-
Three words: Val Kilmer's hair. ;-)
-
Got to be kidding me there. One of the best movies that includes multiple characters that are not sacrificed for the story. People talk about too many villians in Spiderman 3 etc but HEat shows that under talented cast and crew, it can work. As for TDK, August cant come quick enough. Everyone else gets to see it in July. D'oh.
-
OK. So. There's 60 minutes in an hour. So, 2 hours would be 120 minutes. That leaves 20 minutes, which is 1/3 of 60 minutes. So, BB is 2 & 1/3 hours long. BUT nobody says 2 & 1/3 hours long SO... BB is 2 hours and 20 minutes long. TDK is rumored to be 152 minutes long (2 hours and 32 minutes, roughly 2 & 1/2 hours), which is only 12 minutes longer than BB. And your brain (maybe even your pecker) will be exploding from those 12 extra minutes of awesomeness including the credits for the assistant to the assistant of the assistant to Christopher Nolan.Give in to The Dark Knight! Let it rule your soul!
-
I read your post and I thank you for your contribution to this TB.Long live The Dark Knight!
-
WTF is up with all these people hating on Michael Mann's HEAT? I thought it was a pretty fuckin good movie. What exactly is there to NOT like about it? I honestly want to know why you folks are talkin shit on it. I mean... DeNiro and Pacino were fuckin unplugged in that shit. And even Kilmer was good too.
-
and we need more movies like it.
-
was a damn good film as well.
-
Anyone who did'nt get a chance to see the 12 IESB clips needs to do themselves a favor and check it out on youtube. Fucking awesomeness in every frame. Nolan is a fucking God. BB rocked and so will this.
-
wtf does IESB stand for? where the fuck are all these new acronyms coming from?
-
but not entirely. Batman Begins had good and bad shit about it, but I thought it had more good than bad.
-
I noticed that too.
-
I sincerely worry about this movie fucking up some 10-year-olds*. I'm happy that Nolan's made this film his way, but then I see the cereal ads on TV with an 8 year old playing with his little dead Heath Ledger bobblehead. (Like the Frank Booth plushie I got in my cereal, with ActionGrip nitrous tank!) This sure doesn't sound like a film this kid should be seeing. (*And yes, I do know Harry "I can't wait for this movie to fuck up little kids!" Knowles would disagree.) I'm just sayin', I hope parents screen this bad boy first.
-
They they think it was 非常に奇妙な? That's the real question...
-
It's evident TDK is not for kids; My little boy wants to see it and I attempted to explain the Joker is VERY evil, brutal and B-A-D and it will scare him and is not appropriate for little children. "You can cover my eyes" at the bad parts." I shook my head and looked at my wife, later telling her we have to work on letting him down. He saw Batman Begins at home on video, but it would've been too much in a theater for him then, just as I think TDK would be now though he's a a couple of years older. The film should not be cut down, censored, etc. And Heat was a good film (not a masterpiece in my book, but goo - can we agree to diverge on perspectives here?). On the other hand, I though Transformers was great for 5 to 10 year olds especially. I do not know if M of M is parent at all (I don't think so).
-
1) Don't think TDK is going to be good for kids. Just don't take them. Period. Also, don't dare cut it down in any shape or form.
2) Heat was one hell of a good movie. Not the greatest. But Al and Robert gave some incredible performances. Mann did some fantastic work.
3) Also thought Transformers was a good kids flick.
-
M of M, I don't want to get into a flame war with someone who has no child; you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but until you wear those parent shoes...you really can't understand all the variables. I thought I knew when I was childless and I did not (My wife had a pompous, thinks-she-knows it all mid-30s friend who constantly tries to give me parenting directives when she's been over our home and I can't stand her anymore - I head upstairs when she's over now. Like some idiot is ever going to fuck her, let alone have kids with her. Plus she's a fat tub, but it's not even the fat part that's off-putting, it's her shrill bitch of a personality, ending all arguments with "whatever." ). Anyway, it's like some stuff in Shrek, etc. Obviously, you beyond-hated Transformers. But those teen hormones and wank jokes go unperceived by younger ones, really, they do.
Interesting you mentioned it; I actually tried to show him some old VHS last year that included Secret of Nihm. "Daddy, this is boring." And sorry, you can't argue with five year old to "make" them watch it. It's on to something else. And last year, one friend took his sons, 6 and 9 to Transformers and the 6 year old called it the greatest day of his life. You can attack that all you want, but a child's view is a child's view and it should not be messed with. The worst thing you could ever do is tell a young child in that regard, is tell him/her they are wrong. This is not equivocal to things in school and so on. If they think it's the greatest thing let them. That's what you should understand. Every "children's"/"family" film you think is great may not be for a particular child.. I tried Iron Giant when he was only 4 and it didn't click; last year, he got it and liked it. Also, I'm not a Bay apologist in the least - I hate Pearl Harbor (rented, shut off halfway) and only stuck with Armageddon because of Bruce Willis (and that Diane "hack" Warren song? Perhaps the worst thing Aerosmith has ever, ever done.) You are right about education coming in all forms. My boy has spouted off stuff and I go, "where'd you hear that?" One of the answers was Scooby-Doo. Another was Justice League. Yeah, so anything can expand a child's education and open their eyes to new possiblities. When I was around 6, I sure as hell didn't have "wormhole" in my vocabulary (Most adults didn't then, either). My kids does. All this said, I'm going to keep him from Dark Knight in a theater, though will still give him the Bat action figure already bought at Target before speculators for ebay cleaned out the section. -
Then start by proofreading your posts before you submit them. There used to be a time when we could dismiss poor grammar, spelling, punctuation, and writing style as simply the failure to proofread or perhaps the necessity of speed-typing to make a quick response. Even if the post was filled with errors and was a muddled mess, the poster would get the benefit of the doubt that he or she knew proper English but sped through the typing process to quickly. Those days are long gone, however. LONG gone. Nowadays, we can no longer assume the writer has any compositional or language skills at all. Poorly educated? Maybe. Properly educated but just doesn't give a fuck if they look stupid or not? Perhaps. Borderline illiterate? I suspect so. Combination of the three? Likely. Many of you (aside from the flamers and poo-slingers) have some interesting thoughts to share, but they are buried under woefully bad English grammar, spelling, etc that undermines your credibility. Didn't anyone here make it past 4th grade English class? Many of you should feel very fortunate that job applications don't include essay questions, because if they did you' d all be working in fast food for the rest of your lives. Out in the "real world" or in message boards like this or numerous others, I read hateful and smart-ass criticism of non-English who innocently mangle the English language in their posts. Well guess what? English isn't their mother tongue, so they can be excused for making mistakes. English IS, however, YOUR mother tongue, yet too many of you wield your sabre of illiteracy as if it were a virtue. It's not. No matter how eloquent you try to be in your post - no matter how valid or interesting a point you try to make - if your English is bad then you are to be dismissed as unintelligent. Be as defensive as you like in your retorts to this, but it won't change the fact that the world will perceive you in a negative light. Throw shit my way all you want. It is easier for me to wash that off than it is for you to fix being illiterate. You have the tough road to hoe, not me.

And I can take the high road and ignore attacks on parenting and choices of films. I could take a lot of cheap shots, but will not...today. Now your last post made some valid points about kids seeing more then they reach pre-teen, but I wouldn't quite say everything. My sister's boy is very bright 12 soon to be 13 and she saw a screening already and doesn't want him seeing it; her decision as a parent. It's not your place or my place even as an uncle to argue with that. Also, Trainspotting is a powerful anti-drug film as well, though it takes a while to get there and more so, I think it's for a kid who's 16 or so, not 12. Since I am, ahem, older, my parents took me to a Bond film in the 60s and it was double-bill (oh, those good old days - people sat through two features, yes!) with a Michael Caine far more realistic spy thriller that made an incredible impression on me at 8-9 years old, whatever I was then. So you're right in many respects about that.
-
Even if the post was filled with errors and was a muddled mess, the poster would get the benefit of the doubt that he or she knew proper English but sped through the typing process to quickly.
You just wrote an entire rant about spelling & grammar yet you can't even use the word too correctly in a sentence.
That's what "Farkers" call a "Rotzky". -
Although his official review is still under the embargo, he has offered up some tasty nuggets. He warns against the growing pre-release hyperbole. But he says that it's a fierce, dark, and scary film. So much, in fact, he can't believe it got a PG-13.
-
I grew up going to movies like The Outlaw Josie Wales one weekend, then I would see Herbie the Lovebug the next weekend. I saw Jaws in the theatre (didn't really think it was that scary or gruesome, as people around me were screaming)I also watched quite a few foreign films in my youth. Not every kid has the mindframe, attention span, or interest to see just any movie. Point is I was probably around 8 when I saw "The Car" in the theater, my mother overheard me describing the movie to my friend and wondered what the hell I was watching. So me, my mom & the neighbor went to see it (my 2nd time), we all had the same reactions at the same time to the the movie. Some kids get that it's just entertainment, and I thank God (& my family) that I was pretty much allowed to see whatever movie looked good to me. I look at my friends & their taste in movies and I do feel like my childhood made a huge difference in our widely different preferences. I trend to more dramatic, dark, violent movies: La Haine, City of God, Children of Men. But I will also watch movies like The Host & Monster Squad. My friends prefer Will Farrell, Ben Stiller, etc. type movies, I truly don't find those movies funny. So the only thing to do is expose your kids to all kinds of movies: watch the Iron Giant, and if the kids can watch Unforgiven, and understand that violence comes with a price then you are doing that kid a huge favor. Expand their horizons there is an entire world of film out there. Teach them what is out there, Seven Samurai, Die Hard, The Warriors, Escape from New York, etc., Just don't throw any old piece of crap in the DVD player to bide the time.
-
When you are going to go into a rant about grammar, spelling, etc. it is important to use the right form of the word 'to'. However, maybe you were doing "the typing process to quickly."
-
Didn't see you got to jawsfan first, sorry about the dupe grammar/spelling nazism. MNG, could you ellaborate on the pre-release hyperbole warning?
-
Just to clarify, I never suggested anyone "recut" or censor the movie. It's just that the TV spots for the toy tie-ins are so, erm, innocent. "Take that, Joker! Darn, you got me!" No mention of a knife fetish or anything. I'm kinda hoping all the coverage around Ledger clued people in to the tone of this film and the appropriate audience.
-
No problem. Regarding the pre-release hyperbole, apparently there have been some entertainment reporters/bloggers who have seen a screening and likened the movie to GODFATHER 2 or EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Moriarty advised against buying into that as you will probably set yourself up for disappointment. That being said, he still seemed VERY impressed.
-
What's up you crazy bastard?
-
I remember being nine when I saw the original Matrix. How scary was that moment where Neo got trapped in the liquid. It was scary but it was one of the many reasons why the film was so memorable. LOTR: FOTR or the end of Raiders are a few great examples. For everyone to feel the ultimate experience one has to trigger all sorts of emotions. what better than at a young age? A state in which our emotions are the most vulnerable. I know it sounds harsh but in the end it makes the product more satisfying.
-
I want to see something new, like a psychotic Joker. It looks like we get our wish. I have been wanting to see this ever since Heath Ledger was cast. I can't wait to see it.
-
Here is what he said:
Courtesy of Peter Sciretta over at SlashFilm.com, I caught an early screening of "The Dark Knight" yesterday evening.Without giving anything away, this is an epic film (and trust me: based on the sheer size and scope of the visuals and storytelling, that's not an overstatement). It's the "Godfather II" of comic book films and three times more earnest than "Batman Begins" (and fuck, was that an earnest film). Easily the most adult comic book film ever made. Heath Ledger didn't so much give a performance as he disappeared completely into the role; I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for Best Supporting Actor. Fucking flick's nearly three hours long and only leaves you wanting more (in a great way). I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by it. Nolan and crew have created something close to a masterpiece. -
So too would my dream of Paul WS Anderson directing "Joker vs IT" circa 2020.

i do wonder if this anarchic joker will inspire alot of impressionable stupid teenagers that still listen to insane clown posse, still wear the black strappy pants they stopped selling at hot topic 5 years ago, and otherwise hate their parents and authority so much that they are already leaning toward a columbine episode- to go out and do something really stupid.i say this because if this movie came out when i was a highschool junior i might be inspired to go burn some shit down, vandalize, pipe-bomb and cause some trouble.i am in no way saying that we should ban or shield children from this movie- or blame it for anything that happens-but you KNOW some idiot is going to fancy himself the joker of the trailer park and someone is going to get hurt.already we have a kid getting decapitated at six flags- from the batman ride no less!- because he thought climbing two sets of fences and ignoring all kinds of signage to get his hat was worth losing his head. yeah- he was decapitated trying to get his hat from under the batman ride. the irony is thick!

Yeah, you got me. Good catch. I certainly do know the difference between "to" and "too", but I typed too quickly. I'm a big fan of irony, too, so in this case it isn't lost on me. I stand by my original point, however, and will pardon myself for the typo as I gladly pardon anyone else of said offense when it is obvious the typo was a simple error and not evidence of seemingly willful ignorance.

...a fake fucking universe in a fake fucking movie???
Oh yeah. You saw Iron Man and Hulk. WAY AFTER DC STARTED THESE FILMS.
DC has to reformat their films because you can't suspend your imagination THAT MUCH MORE THAT BATMAN AND SUPERMAN MUUUUUST COEXIST IN THE SAME FILM-VERSE? Fuck you fags. -
"Do you spell moron with 3 m's in Oporto?" I fucking ruined my monitor with that. And Memories, could you be a bigger cunt. Not content with telling everyone what they should think regarding movies, you've now gone on to tell people what and how they should parent. Despite the fact (and this is something we should all thank the lord for) that you haven't spawned yourself. Having said that- any British parent out there- DON'T TAKE YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS. Because I'm selfish and might be in the cinema at the same time. I'll let you know when you can.

Funniest post of the week. Bodet, you have won the internets and taken the field!

....as it was a poorly written and shot mess...it wasn't even a case of there being a good movie in there once the padding is carved away. The movie was bad. Bad. Bale's strangled Bat Voice was hilarious, Katie was a horrid choice, the bad guys were poorly written...there was just so much wrong with it. TDK might be an improvement...God knows it can't be much worse. Yeah a good movie is never too long, but a misguided misfire like Bats Begins was torture 140 minutes. Good Lord these people have never heard of an economy of storytelling.
