Jeff Goldblum To Replace Noth On CRIMINAL INTENT!!

Published at:  Apr 26, 2009 1:25:28 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The great Jeff Goldblum, fresh from the failed NBC crime drama “Raines,” will replace Chris Noth on USA/NBC’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” Goldblum will star in half the episodes; Vincent D’Onofrio will continue to handle the other half.

Last year’s “Raines” was Goldblum’s first starring role on a TV series since 1980’s “Tenspeed and Brown Shoe.”

His big-screen credits include “Annie Hall,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “The Big Chill,” “The Right Stuff,” “Buckaroo Banzai,” “Silverado,” “The Fly,” “Jurassic Park,” “Independence Day,” “The Lost World” and “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.”

    by dennismm

I can't imagine Goldblum playing it razor-straight, so he'll have to work against comparisons with D'onofrio. Noth never belonged on CI - he should have become the "old cop" on Law & Order Classic Flavor after Farina left.

I preferred the D'Onofrio episodes, but I also liked that the Noth episodes had a different approach. Goldblum's character needs to not be a Goren clone. Maybe he can talk to hallucinations of the murder victims during the investigation? :)

So will Goldblum and D'Onoffro have a overacting war?

    by tvguy4566

I really like both actors, but both have the propensity for over the top performances. That is what turned me off to L&O:CI in the first place. D'Onoffro basically is this super dective that everyone just sits around in awe of his brilliance and the fact he knows everything about everything. We don't need another character like that on this show. I would watch the Chris Noth episodes and skip the others. Now I may just skip the whole thing.

Noth quit because he wouldn't agree to a price freeze...

    by sledge hammer

...on his salary for this season, despite the fact that the show only barely managed to even get a new season, thanks to the first airing on cable deal they made. Apparently Noth believes that the success of the wretched Sex & The City movie means that he's hot shit right now, and as such deserved a hefty increase in his already substantial salary for the show, despite the cut backs the show had to make just to come back at all. And again, remember, they didn't cut his salary, they just couldn't increase it any so he walked in a David Caruso "it's my turn!" type huff. Nobody much cared though, and they up and hired the great Jeff Goldblum in his place instead, for the same salary that Noth would have got, not only replacing Noth with a far more talented and more popular actor, but also making him look like the absolute tool he is into the bargain.

    by jonjonb

This guy pisses me off, because I have a lot of love for Logan, but every time I see Noth out of character he seems to go out of his way to be more and more of a dick. He's shot himself in the foot this time, though. Goldblum is one of my favourite people to watch on screen, and could be a draw for new viewers. And, hell, if he turns out to be too much like Goren then drop Goren. The new direction of the show has turned him into a pussy, although I haven't seen the latest eps, didn't know it was even back on (torrent time). Have they managed to salvage the character? Is it even possible?

    also they are chubby.
Goldblum seems to be given a huge pass by the typically cynical TB nation here at AICN, and for what reason, I cannot fathom. He is the quintessential "one character" actor who portrays that one character every time he is on screen.
I bet the show will be peppered with his 'buckshot staccato' dialogue style. Like in 4 of July where he stammers his way through the whole movie with choice gems like "yesyes big boom gotta go - go now yes yes faster - faster is good yesyes"

    by evilwizardglick

I always thought they brought Noth in as a replacement for Vincent D.
But he never seemed to click.
Now Goldblum is closer to Vincent D.'s style of intelligent detective.
If he proves popular Vincent D could leave the show in a year or two.

    L&O

    by dollar bird

Actually, what's even more welcome to me is the fact that Warren Leight is leaving the show. The program took a stylistic turn when Rene Balcer left and Leight took over, and it was not for the better. They added pop songs ala CSI. The mysteries themselves seemed weaker. The whole Goren's mom and his nervous breakdown thing was all Leight stuff, and I thought it was really weak. I watch that show to see some mysteries, to see Goren know everything, and to hear Eames make wise-cracks while he's doing so. I could have taken or left the Logan episodes. I only watched them because they were on in the reruns and I was used to watching the show. Logan wasn't enough of an interesting character to make watching him solve a crime for an hour fun. Goldblum probably could make an interesting detective. I watched one ep of Raines and thought it had potential, but then it was gone before I could remember to watch it again. But I think we all agree, Goren is where it's at. That character needs to get out of his funk and back to knowing everything and being quirky so Eames can make acerbic quips.

Noth was never brought in for a replacement of D'Onofrio. He was brought in because the shooting schedule was causing D'Onofrio some major medical issues. They brought in Noth to keep D'Onofrio on the show by cutting his shooting schedule, not to be his replacement.
