Poster for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake... why...
Hey folks, Harry here at the Gatwick airport - killing time with free Wifi - something that Heathrow doesn't have! Damn them! Anyway - downloaded a ton of email - and saw this... a "teaser" poster for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake that DDOG sent in. Wow - looks a tad CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE THIRD KINDish... And KEANU BARADA NIKTO is not something I'm looking forward to. And if the rumors of Gort being a robot dog are true - man... if Gort lifts a leg to ray blast weapons - that might be the level of brilliance I'm expecting from the House of Rothman. Here ya go...

Close as I'll ever get to glory. This movie: bad idea. Stop remaking!

Nuff said.

Just like this movie.

is the man. Just sayin'

So Keanu's playing Gort, yes? http://tinyurl.com/6fwy6w Really good casting for once.

change your ways! Oh...and Klaatu barada naked!"
-
"For the last time, no you don't!!"

imagine the pitches and casting discussions that lead to this. it'd be more entertaining to see a movie about some crazy cats deciding to remake TDTESS with keanu as gort.
-
Means...Keanu Reeves Sucks...in Martian.
-
...and then went on about its business.
-
Seriously... what does Keanu have on Hollywood execs?
Incriminating photos?
Underground video of felonious acts?
We await another useless and unnecessary abominable remake of one of the classics of cinema.
*Sigh* -
it was a thinking and suspense scifi film, things which cant be bettered with "new" technology. i'm sure they'll add osme extra CGI action scenes, like maybe more aliens arrive to do battle and nuke the place but their saucer is a huge flying fridge so they're invulnerable to it.

And what if the Earth keeps going?

Blah, blah, blah, blah...I'll kill some space so no one accidentally sees any spoilers without having to actually read into the post. Blah, blah, blah, blah...okay, enough of that. Here is all I wanted to say (LAST CHANCE SPOILER): supposedly the new plot -- politically correct as it instantly sounds -- centers on global warming and Keanu coming to warn us of the danger. Right, as if we needed him versus already being forced to listen to Al Gore (or now Obama) and the Green movement on cable news all the time. Ok, fine -- so he shows up and now the new Klaatu tells us that if we don't clean up our act very soon, the Earth will die and so will we. So apparently that's his new message: the Earth dies, you die.Ok, fine -- so he's a benevolent alien coming to warn us. Which brings me to my plot question: why the hell would a seriously advanced alien race -- and I mean one that is obviously waaaaaay ahead of us technologically since clearly they are capable of interstellar travel and things like that -- ONLY come to Earth to warn us about the climate going bye-bye? My point being, at least in the original version the MAIN PLOT made sense. Namely, Klaatu was an interstellar cop who came to say "Hey, you guys are way too violent on your world, and NOW you're building rockets and heading into space. We can't have you getting rowdy in our neck of the woods. So cut that shit out or we're gonna annihilate you!" See, THAT makes sense. There's a true cause and effect. But in this new version how does the Earth suffering from climate change...even if it DOES go totally south and it DOES kill us all in a 100 or so years...how does THAT affect OTHER WORLDS? In short, why should they give a shit? What, they think we're gonna export LA's smog pollution? And if these guys are so benevolent that they want to warn us -- again, given how ADVANCED they are -- why are they sending Keanu to warn us as opposed to helping the fuck out? Why is Keanu coming to TALK to us as opposed to bringing us some super-duper atmospheric greenhouse gas vacuum cleaner or something like that?Anyway, I hope this thing holds together. I love the original, so I hope for the sake of making some sort of politically correct remake that they didn't fuck this up JUST so it could be politically correct.

Klaatu steps to the end of the spaceship's ramp and address the army before him:
"Woooaaahhh."
The Army opens fire. Klaatu drops dead.

If this movie takes place in NYC, I'm going to fucking scream.
The original took place in DC. I can just imagine the modern filmmakers setting this film in NYC and using the United Nations building.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Stop setting movies in the most overrused city in existence! -
You know Plastic Man, Hollywood's latest favorite toy, will be promoted by this trash movie. Hell, they'll probably ask him for a cameo.
-

Please fix.

Starring Jason Biggs. Can't wait. Now fuck off.
-
No one is going to give a flying fuck for this movie, and the cock arse that came up with this nugget will be sweeping trash by New Year.
Why oh why these Hollywood turds think that remakes are a good idea is beyond me!
Leave the fucking originals alone. -

I remember many many times where I read some "script reviews" here or over the top reviews of antecipated movies and went all excited to see them and just got that "pfffft" sensation... many, many times. To an extent where AICN is just what it is now: a hater stirrer against some studios and projects and a pusher for things they didn't see but are all loving anyway. Bias is the death for a "critic" or a site and that's what AICN has become. Biased. IMO the original, altough a classic, has many flaws and I would like to see the so important main message reworked. To adapt it's main story to the events that happens to our world today isn't in any way a crime against the original (well, that on the closed minds of some)on the contrary: it shows that it's main core still there while directed to the problems that cause fear to the humanity today. Of course, the wannabes hypocrites HATE any idea of a remake, much worse, then, if it adds any type of update or modern ideas to it. Basically: this site , even if the movie is good for all it's own merits, will never aknowledge that. About Keanu, well, he won't be any less "wooden" than the original actor who was, without any doubt, only less wooden in it than Gort. I hope Keanu can improve the character and I can see how he is perfect to play the alien, as with his multicultural background he can relate with people all around the world, VERY different from the all American perfect white male that Michael Rennie played at that time. Maybe that's why some hate so much Keanu? Because he isn't your wannabe white perfect male? Why an alien should be? The world changed but, unfortunately, some "critics" didn't realize that... and still make money from those stupid enough for not having an opinion for themselves... And to Browzer: The original ship landed in New York. I tought all "fans to death" here would know it... jeez, some people just follow the trend hater and go along...
-
that's all.
-
Of course this is the PC version of DTESS where we are warned to stop polluting. Which means Chinese and Indians may become endangered since they are the worst polluters on the planet by far. (And we're not talking about little old harmless CO2, but stuff that WILL kill you long term). This poster on another site, Luboš Motl, said it best:
"It’s amazing that someone is willing to take one of the first pioneering science-fiction movies and turn it, in the cheapest pornographic way, into a propaganda tool of the dumbest ideological fad of this decade." The only element missing is having the robot played by Al Gor(t). But maybe they figured, Whoa!, two robotic actors would be too many. That makes so much sense, to have futuristic do-gooders fly all the way here in a saucer, making god only knows what kind of carbon/nuclear footprint to use their far advanced technology to tell us progress is bad. Hey, that kinda DOES sound like Al Gore.... No thanks. I'll wait for the Conservative version where advanced aliens warn that reckless spending on social engineering and bureaucracy is destroying the galaxy. Stop the insanity! Or else.
-
When was the last time "The One" let us down? His track record is pretty much flawless. I mean the man gave us The Lake House, praise Allah.
-
Keanu isn't the problem as I see it with this film. I like Keanu. He's held down several iconic roles over the years. He's also made some fairly horrible stuff too, but overall he's generated a good track record. He's not the problem.
The problem is Brendan Fraser and the paint by numbers plot of this film. There'll be zero drama, even for a kid's story, with the only sense of wonder being the watching-a-video-game sort. Brendan Fraser seems like a good guy, and he wasn't bad in "The Mummy" or "The Quiet American," but he's typecast here. He's a cardboard cutout. Which, for what the film is, is probably fine. I'm just not expecting a story that makes any sense, even in a created-reality sort of way. Kids'll dig it though. You watch. -
Seriously! Just look at teh 'splosion!
-
...you'd think by this point they'd be able to update their own damn site without fucking up, or, I dunno, maybe even check after posting that the news post worked as planned for. But I guess that's all too hard at AICN HQ. So very lame.
-
The Matrix and A Scanner Darkly. Pure sci-fi cinema. People should give more credit where credit is due (aside the fact that lake House is a beautiful sci-fi romance for people with brains...). And the poster still there on the site, but the link here is broken... wonder why... maybe Harry is saving us from burning our eyes.
-
I think Roboteer said it best. 'Nough said on this turd. May Hollywood and Hollywood apologists burn in hell.
-
...words straight from the Necronomicon.

Should we remember that the original movie was made in Hollywood? And was a big production who "God forbid!", wanted to make money as well? As it in the 50s Hollywood wasn't what it is today...
-
Remember the excitement and buzz on the first Matrix, Sixth Sense, etc.? Those were new movies... not remakes. Remember box office bombs on remakes like Psycho and bad 1960s tv shows? Fuck you, talentless hacks.

or does this look like the clasic shot from Close Encounters, The mothership and all the scientists and techs moving close to it from the ending?

Damn You Michael Bay

I have never seen such a hyperventilating, pants-around-their-knees bunch of geek fanboys jerks in my life. Do you people KNOW that most of the people in the real world have never even seen the original? Do you KNOW that although the original is fine, chockfullamessage cinema for the TIME that it was STILL quite hilarious in its execution? THis remake is going to ROCK THE WORLD and Keanu is PERFECT as Klaatu. Why? First of all because he's an actor who won't chew the trees up. Secondly as one intelligent person said, he is multicultural. The man resembles a humanoid alien that we are used to thinking about, although he is a very beautiful version. Finally, Keanu is perfect because he CARES about the material and I am sure took it as seriously as he took The Matrix and A Scanner Darkly. The man is dedicated to preserving the dignity and integrity of the original story. He has also played quite a few "savior" type of roles. The criticism he is garnering is absolutely hilarious in my opinion. The director, Scott Derrickson, directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which was based on an actual case of demon possession. He handled it very well and very seriously. If you folks are not aware of these fine points, you're either so biased that your opinion should wipe my ass or you're simply not thinking. I have see an image of the new Gort and it's FANTASTIC. I can't tell you how excited I am to see the movie and I am a fan of the original.
-
Yes it does resemble the final scene from Close Encounters. It also looks like the original scene from TDTESS when the spaceship lands and the crowd of people are standing around it, waiting to see who or what will come out. Remember that Spielberg was influenced by all of the old movies. Keep it in order.
-
This looks cool, its in color, Keanu is underrated, so i'm going to see this. Stop hating, you losers.
-
The timing of this film is perfect, what with the world and its environment in complete chaos. We obviously - in the past 50+ years - have learned nothing about how to respect the earth or each other. Millions of people as I said have not seen the original and they NEED to hear this message. Nowhere have I read that the remake will focus on global warming; Keanu has said that environmentalism plays a part in his film. If it did NOT it would be a cash cow Hollywood piece of crap (but it won't be, see above). The environment is the biggest global issue we are dealing with today aside from the war. If man does not do something to try to cub the pollution, trash flow, heat index and gobbling up of every resource we can find, we're goners and worse, we may take our filthiness into space and gobble up other planets, which without knowing for sure, I would bet is part of the script.
-
Brendan Fraser is not in this film, don't know where you got that. It has a superior cast including Kathy Bates, John Cleese as Dr. Barnhard, Jayden Smith and Jennifer Connelly as Helen. There were a few small visual jokes in TDTESS and I'm sure there will be this time around, but the heaviness of the message will be amped up. Don't know where you got the idea that the plot was flat or makes no sense....
-
...Jon Peters could be involved. Then, Gort would be a gay robot dog, the spaceship would have polar bear guards and Klaatu would have to fight a giant spider.

They have to make it for the youngen's today who have no paitien
by grampageezer
Why are they trying to remake this??? I can't conceive how TDTESS could be improved, unless they're planning on doing it with an all-under 30 cast and in color for the young people today who hate B&W movies or movies that don't feature a cast of twenty-something year olds in every role.
I mean how can they beat the coolest flying saucer in film (Besides the one in Forbidden Planet?)
In this new Earth Stood Still remake instead of a seamless saucer they'll probably have some tricked out, over-detailed, light covered Star Wars-type ship and a Terminator-type robot in the role of Gort.
Oh yeah, can't forget cussing and nudity. They have to have 50% of the dialog emphasized with cuss words and a sex scene between the Klaatu character and the main female otherwise the young people wouldn't want to see it.
-
it will stay in keeping with the original as far as the rating so that children can see it. The rest of your imagination is pretty wild, gramps. Maybe you should take a gander at my posts. I've answered your fears already.
-
What do you all think a real alien ship would look like? My gut tells me this new ship will not look like a ferris wheel or a fighter ship, obviously. It will probably be seamless as it was both in the film and the original short story the first film was based on. Light reflective though.

Why does every movie poster have to look like it's for a zombie
by johnny smith
Sigh.
-
You all bashing enviromental message when the original had a big time advertisement for United Nations. Can anyone here, in this globalized world of today (2008 should I remember), think some big American pure white alien should revere United Nations the way he did in the original movie? If so, take me back to the 50s...
-
You and most others are assuming that most people have seen the original. Most people have never even heard of the original, and in spite of the general cynicism, Hollywood can still get a message across, especially with the awesome FX these days. I see this film as still being character-driven with the effects for emphasis.
-
http://i25.tinypic.com/1e85r9.jpg
He is a bit like a Transformer but I like that he's lean, I like the light in the eye, his huge size, plus he's got a fullon robot chubby .... -
I don't have a problem with Keanu in the role of Klaatue, he'll probably do fine. And I'm sure the SPX will be good, although I hope not overdone.
What I do have a problem with in a remake of this, is that I'm sure they will turn it into some sort of romance to get the chick-flick crowd. Whatever the message will be in this movie that is important enough for an alien race to visit and warn us about, will probably be the secondary storyline to him getting involved romantically with the female star.
You know it's true. Otherwise, how will guys get their girlfriends or wives to see it with them?
Isn't that what they do with every movie that is geared to males, from everything from Pearl Harbor to Spiderman?
The fate of the world is in balance, but they have to always put in some sappy kleenix scene for the gals to fantasize about. -
Not really. This image is in an open field, not a light strip tarmac flooded with scientists. The ship also looks nothing like the mothership in CE. I love the lettering - it looks like the old sci-fi novel covers.
-
it's more about Helen being the only one besides Dr. Barnhard who believe in Klaatu and wants to help him. Since both leads are very attractive there will no doubt be some interplay between them, but he is leaving earth. If it happens hey - it worked in Starman.
-
So how much is the studio paying you to talk this movie up?
-
Starman was not that good IMO.
I'm hoping they don't take Earth Stood Still in that direction. -
You wrote, "Brendan Fraser isn't in this film," and I just realized you're right. I thought this was a preview of "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Fraser's in THAT film, not "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
Sorry. My bad. -
the original in black and white as almost a science fiction noir film. Keanu Reeves is no Michael Rennie, with that severe facial bone structure and British accent. Reeves doesn't have the gravitas to be taken seriously as a messenger of potential doom. If this is to be remade at all, at least cast Ralph Fiennes.God, first The Haunting, then Andromeda Strain, now this. Wise's best genre efforts are being thrashed. Ironically, the original is on AMC this afternoon.
-
I just hate to see ignorance abound. You're entitled to your opinions but they should at least be based on facts. BTW it was filmed in Vancouver and they kept the Washington DC plot point. I've seen pictures of the sets and military vehicles on a field.
-
LOL! Rennie did fine in TDTESS but his career was less than middling. If you want to talk bone structure... please. Keanu has had the gravitas to play Neo, son of Satan and many other very serious roles. Don't be silly. He's not Ted.
-
They should be paying you. You are like a one person PR firm on this talkback. I hope the movie doesn't disappoint you.
-
I agree you're very cynical and you're not paying attention to what I said about the director. You also kinda reiterated the original. Doh.
-
Let me just say I'm not worried. A clip was shown 2 days ago at a film fest in Amsterdam.
-
Jon Hamm is in this...
-
Yeah, Rothman sucks and most things that Fox does under him really suck. Interestingly, even though FF2:ROTS was actually pretty good, the stink from the first movie is what everyone remembers nowadays. I don't think Keanu will be bad in this movie but I don't see why they have to diss the source material so hard, this is a classic that they are touching after all. Oh, the hubris of, 'I'm gonna put my OWN touch on it...' Sometimes it's like adding to a Picasso - it doesn't need it!
-
The only thing I didn't like about the original is that Klaatu had to deliver his 'message" not to the top leaders of the world, but to a bunch of nobody scientists. And you knew no government would ever listen to these eccentric guys. Which meant basically, the world was going to continue it's downhill path until Gort blasted us out of the universe.
Instead of leaving the audience with a sense of hope for our future, we left the theater thinking "Oh man, we're doomed." -
the poster looks good. the font is classy. reeves has been in some of the best genre films of the last two decades.
-
Because aside from some of the people on this site, most of the rest of the world never saw the original. And lots of the ones who did are dead now. It's that simple.
-
You're just more cynical than I am. I think WB would be fools to go at it the way you are describing. You made fun of the remake by making fun of the original... am i missing something? It's just a wait and see. I believe they have faced the remake with class and that because of this, it will make squillions of dollars. Keanu has an honest sweetness to him - something very important in an alien ambassador - that is attractive to a large audience, aside from FX or explosions.
-
to skimn: since where my dear? So, Michael Reenie's bone structure (yep, that face who resembled almost every white American male role model... yes...) and brittish accent were so important requisites to compose the character of Klaatu? I never thought of that. For me an Alien should not be fully related to any specific race of our planet and that's why I believe Keanu Reeves is perfect for it as he is mixed. As for the brittish accent... pffft... you guys realize the world is big uh? many people (including myself) aren't from America or countries that have English as their language. We watch movies with subtitles or dubbed. So, forget about "brittish" accents giving gravitas to a character because for us it only sounds the same.
-
Not British and he was a helluva better actor than Keanu will be in this role.
-
What are you smoking?? Is there something about Keanu's acting that makes him a poor choice for Klaatu? Please enlighten me.
-
The studio doing the movie is 20th Century Fox. BTW, you should be careful posting that sketch of Gort, you know how studios are. And I understand that you are antecipating the movie, believe me, some of the things you say are reasonable, but try do not envolve yourself too much with the hatred. Sometimes it's funny to give a bit of good sense in the discussions here, but don't stress yourself. I have no doubts the movie will have it's merits for it's own. Not doing propaganda for United Nations and have a mixed actor as an Alien is already an improvement IMO. But, shhhh... don't tell some "fans" here... they might have a heart attack if things doesn't suck hard as they want.
-
I'm not stressing, just having fun. Thanks :) sshhhing
-
AICN is not biased AT ALL. You just have no damn clue what the movie will be like and saying this decent poster sucks. Didn't you guys run a bullshit plot synopsis a while back and something about Gort being a totem pole and a talkbacker fucking busted you on it with a link to the designer's sketch? Now if this was an Abrams "Monsterous" piece of shit poster or a picture of Guillermo del Toro's fucking ass, it would be "Brilliant" and "Changing the face of art as we know it.."
-
I want to have your baby.
-
I was talking about another post if you pay attention my dear. skimn said he had brittish accent, not me. For me they sound all the same. And, really, Rennie was a fine actor but... God Forbid! The only character for what he is remembered by people like you is... Klaatu! Take a look at his resume... it's good. Not great. Sorry to bust your bubble Uncapie, I know how you hate the remaking for being remaked but not remaked exactly in the same way with the same lines and all the same actors and music and everything of the original. Keanu is a fine actor, with a fine career and will do a great job. In his own way. Not white, not dull and not Brittish/Irish accent.
-
for a trailer at least. It's attached to Hancock next week.
-
Needs to beat Keanu's head in with the bones of Michael Rennie. That is, I'll keep an open mind about this. But I too worry about the K-Paxing/Bayifiying potential this project has.
-
Violence never solved anything! Klaatu's ghost is crying now. I think Rennie would pass the baton to Keanu, they'd share a smoke and talk abouot nuclear fusion, cool cars and football vs. soccer.
-
I actually do not have a big problem with Keanu in some movies. But, and it's a huge BUT..."The Day The Earth Stood Still", besides "Creature from the Black Lagoon" is one of my favorite movies of all time. THERE IS NO WAY anyone could do this movie justice. Especially Keanu. He could never replace the suave demeanor and gentleman qualities that Michael Rennie had as Klaatu. And who could forget Aunt B.?
-
and with high velocity! I'm really not a fan of Keanu's and so I'll remain a skeptic for now. TDTESS is a classic in SciFi much like another recent remake: ANDROMEDA STRAIN. And we all know how well that turned out. Hopefully the trailer will clarify something about the direction the film makers are taking.

This pissing contest with Fox is really getting old!
by standundermyumbrella
Harry please answer me this. Just because Fox doesn't allow AICN staffmembers into their preview screenings, does that mean ALL FOX MOVIES SUCKS???!!!
So are u about to write off AVATAR????? -
according to IMDB. But thats beside the point. It wouldn't be uncommon for a British actor be cast as an alien in 1951, because of their "non-American" accent. And as far as Reeves' past roles...you'll remember Neo/Mr. Anderson was an office drone who slowly discovered he was the "One". He still played the role as an Everyman who eventually gained his power through knowledge. And in Devils Advocate, he played a slick laywer who, again, slowly discovered his heritage. I actually liked Advocate, and Reeve's role in that. Again, its just a personal feeling.
-
i vote we ban all remakes for a while.
-
Most of you guys live in your mom's basement don't you. Head In A Box lives in his gramma's basement. His mom "lives" in the third bedroom, still in her rocking chair. Any of you duds ever see an interview with Keanu Reeves? There's no more gentlemanly a demeanor in Hollywood. Bonehead awards by the dozens here....

Hollywood should not be touching this classic in any way, shape, or form. There are some movies you just don't mess with, and this is one of them, but then again, Hollywood has no shame anymore, so I should not even be suprised.
-
that maybe 1 in 500 people have even seen TDTESS. LOL
-
I'm not against Keanu Reeves as an actor, just the casting. It would be like Steve Buscemi IS James Bond.
-
Your name sucks and apparently you about 13 years old. TDTESS was a very popular Sci Fi movie in it's time with groundbreaking FX and continues is popularity to this day with millions of new viewers discovering it with each new decade. Maybe you are referring to the 500 people that live in your little redneck town. Now that I could understand.
-
A poster for a movie called "The day Hollywood stopped remaking stuff, and did something original". I'll buy that for a dollar.
-
I sound 13? Again I ask why anyone thinks Keanu can't play a benevolent, impartial, gentle kind determined superior being from another planet. He's played Buddha and Jesus. Anyone?
-
For real, some people like him, some not. That's besides the point. He won't be playing the character the same way Rennie did, nor should he. Rennie was very fine, but was the 50s. Keanu will have his own take on it and some will dig it, some won't. The same way some here think Rennie was oustdanding and I think he was average/good. I have to say that the best thing should wait to see the teaser next week and then we will see what is the road this is taking. Adding to that, I see a lot of hypocrisy here with all the screaming when a remake is announced. Much more in this case, when the movie is really old. Things can get re-worked and updated, the original will still there! And the ones claiming that Hollywood isn't making new things, most part of the material out there are new things and arent good. When new ideas come out (like Shyamanlan's movies, for example), people freak out and bash him to death for doing something new. At same time, people here keep digging some dudes who adapt or rehash materials already out there, like Snyder for adapting graphic novels word for word, pic for pic, or exhaustive rehashs as Batman and Terminator (the latter just a masked remake in the works). So, you bash some people for doing the same other people are doing, but they are congratulated for doing so. To say that isn't bias is laughable. And the studio little "hand" here and there is becoming more and more aparent, what takes away, as a I said in an ealier post, all possible credibility this site could still hold from the old times. Yes, old times.
-
He played Jesus?
-
…current politics aside (you people just can’t help yourselves, can you?), it completely violates the basic logic and context of the original movie IF it is actually about global warming. It would make no sense, whatsoever, for an alien race to warn us about something that only affects planet Earth. Hey, it’s not as if we in the US and Russia don’t still possess enough nuclear weapons to wipe out our planet many times over. Putting the lid on us homo (snicker, he said HOMO!) sapiens inability to resolve disputes any other way than violence is still relevant today. Being a fan of the original (no, didn’t see it when it was running in theatres), I was not happy when I heard of this re-make. Now that I know the premise has changed, color me not at all interested anymore.
-
Jesus with guns. Lots of guns. But he died to save humanity, member?
-
I am confused as to how that even got started unless you heard Keanu say that environmentalism is now a PART of the story, as it should be to remain current. I think it will be told from the standpoint that since we are killing our own planet, we had better not explore space and we would not be welcome in the council or whatever it is Klaatu represents.
-
I thought you meant literally, not conceptually.
-
the movie will be. But, in the context and shape our planet is right now, to let out that topic would be a flaw. As it would be a flaw to make UN propaganda or talk about cold war between URSS and USA! Outdated. The world changed and the problems became bigger and different. I pretty much doubt it will be Klaatu preaching to us to kiss trees asses all the time or Gort will blow us up! Much less Keanu doing the "be excellent to each other" tirade as some here think will happen.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong about keeping the movie in Washington DC? When the hell did New York become the capital of this country?
-
For what I know the ship landed in the Central Park in the original movie.
-
Keanu has been in 40+ films since he played Ted Logan. The Gift, The Last Time I committed Suicide, Constantine, Devil's Advocate. No sign of Ted. I liked Ted. He was sweet and funny. But Jack Traven, he's not.
-
This will be this years I Am Legend, a beloved property, that some will like what was done with, while others will hate.Lime, you're not Keanu's agent, are you? ... JK
-
LOL, just a fan of Keanu's and great sci-fi. I do respect the original film very much. When it was announced that there would be a remake starring Keanu I was thrilled and actually threw a party over Labor Day in honor of the whole notion. We watched TDTESS and had a blast. I'm the type of person who welcomes creative evolution and I truly believe that this is an exceptional time to bring the message to the forefront of the public's mind in the way they react to best - a huge visual fortune cookie. I respect all of the actors on board, the director, and honestly feel that they will or actually already did treat the old film with respect while updating it to make it more exciting. That does not have to be a bad thing. What Keanu said was, "My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.” .... and I see the original idea still present. Klaatu is visiting with a stern warning, looking out for the interests of other worlds, with ours second to their superior knowledge. He's not going to suck the sap out of the trees and refresh earth people with a green milkshake.

WHITE SQUARE, LITTLE RED CROSS... IS THAT GOING TO WORK?
by greigy just wanted to say
-
Lets hope this compliments the original much as Phil Kaufman's Invasion Of The Body Snatchers expands and revers the '50s original. If only every remake could be made with that degree of care and intelligence.
-
I agree... what the hell was Gus Van Sant THINKING when he remade Psycho? In spite of the things Ive been saying, I am usually sceptical of remakes. I've just been following this one closely and am pretty sold that it will be decent if not stunning.
-
Klattu Berata Nicklodeon.
-
either that, or it had better BETTER the original score
-
I've already seen Hollywood take a Robert Wise classic and turn it into garbage. I'm not wasting my time again. Why won't they remake Rooftops?
-
Oh no... firstly, there is still a relevance to a film where an alien and his robot come to earth to warn us about our obsession with weapons and killing, only to get shot himself and have the protective robot engage his protocols whats going to happen? he's going to warn us to stop using our resources and cut back on the gas producing hot dogs and then someone farts and everyone has to clear the room? I think environmental issues will be preaching to the choir, and if it's about global warming and our role in it, then the alien is as clueless as the earth media. I hope to hell this film shows some balls and deals with the tough issues of war mongering.
-
Clearly this sympolizes Earth and therefore mankinds insignificance in the cosmos. Quick! Someone pay the artist 1 Million $$$ so we can hang it up in the art gallery and everyone can "ooooh" and "aaaaah"
The only ones who won't "get" it are uncultured neanderthals. -
Looks like Flexo.
-
And that is what Gort will be like. With today's special effects it should be interesting to see what robot capable of destroying the world will look like. I don't get the ultimatum this time around because weren't they afraid that our warmongering ways would infect the rest of the universe and that's why they came? As polluters we really present no danger to them in the long term.
-
...how about "the script" which I did a review for. And yes, Keanu couldn't hold a candle to Michael Rennie's acting ability. The movie was filmed right the first time; it doesn't merrit a remake. Considering the late, great Robert Wise won 4 Academy Awards for his work as a director, I'd say that speaks for itself. Anyone who says, "You're a hater" or "Give the remake a chance" clearly writes checks with their mouth their ass can't cash.
-
I don't know what you even mean about Rennie. I've seen it three times and I can't see anything special about his performance. Clearly I am giving the movie a chance since I haven't seen it yet, which is just being positive, not stupid. The script you reviewed is not the current one that was used. So there, jerk. I've said about ten times now that supergeeks like yourself have seen the film, but most people alive have not. They won't give a rat's ass about the original.

-
...completely unnecessary film.
-
Nah man, just watched the movie last week. Took place in Washington DC. I can't wait for the obligatory homeless person to say "Only in New York!" when the ship lands... christ...
-
This could work. But, yes, it's still unnecessary.
-
Dude, we melvinned Gort.
-
20th Century Fox opted NOT to include the song that was inspired by the movie -- "Calling Occupants" -- from Canada's KLAATU. They shoulda checked it out here: http://www.klaatu.ca
KLAATU BARADA NIKTO means:
"Lassie, Get Help"
-
Keanu, I mean.
-
Starting Shia LeBoeuf as the smart-mouthed young internet magnate whose snarky humor is simply a cover for his youthful insecurities.Because... you know... the public REALLY wants it!
-
really man? Whoa, my memory is crazy then. It's a good time since I watched it but I really had in my mind that the ship landed in Central Park... of course the main story took place in Washington but I had that vision in my mind. Weird. Indeed, I will have to say: "Only in New York!" eheheh :D
-
Comic Con. So some of you guys will have a chance to be there, see footage and even talk with Mr. Klaatu Reloaded himself. But, please, I know some of the haters will be there, but will an IMPARTIAL one be there as well? For us, wannabe people antecipating the movie? PLEASE? Or are us not important enough to heard a single fair and unbiased note about it from AICN? :)
-
Man, I couldn't disagree more with you about Keanu and Rennie acting habilities, but I have to agree about Wise as it is obvious he was a genius. I understand your love for the original, really, and the way you respect it, it's actors and it's director. But, really, it's a great movie who could spare another great one, but updated and more accessible to younger audiences. Keeping the core of the story but adding and modernizing it. The original will still there, it's a classic. I don't think The Departed diminished the value of Infernal Affairs. Or that King Kong diminished the value of the original. I liked War of the Worlds. I don't see a real problem in it as it's obvious that most movies out there are not remakes, so the original production still going on. I don't know if you can comment about it, but I would like to ask if you know if the draft of the script you read is the one that was re-writted by Scott Derrickson. Because I know he re-wrote it and Keanu said in an interview a few things that go against some details you disclosed about the draft you had. So, if you can answer that, I would be very thankful. Another thing, reading your review, taking aside your tottal disgust about the changes, and I know that it had a big influence on the way you described things, I was really interested in the story you was telling, in that almost "original" plot. Tell me, if you would judge it forgetting about the original movie, as a stand alone, do you think it could become a good movie? Thanks in advance.
-
We do theatrical fulfillment for the studios (including Fox), and it looks terrible. I laughed out loud when Reeves intoned with deadly seriousness "If the earth dies, you die", and everyone looked at me like I was the fool in the room.
-
OK man... can you put aside your bias and describe it (without your foolish... ops! laugh, of course...)?
-
Bias is a pre-disposition towards a particular ideaology or preference. This film wasn't even on my radar until earlier this week, and I have enjoyed Reeves in other films. So, I'm not quite sure where you think my bias comes from. And just for being a jackass, no, I won't describe it.
-
Is the greatest line ever
-
You won't describe it because you haven't seen it. They showed a clip - after signed non-disclosure papers made the rounds - at the Amsterdam Expo 2 days ago.
-
You just posted the same thing over IMDB! HAHA! I just looked there and you said "it's a shitty" remake. And come saying it wasn't on your radar? Please man, you don't need to hide your opinion. But be honest.
-
I said I wasn't against all remakes, just shitty ones. And, based upon what I saw in the trailer, it probably was. My only exposure to this so far has been the trailer, and it makes the film look bleh. I could be wrong. I don't actively hope that films turn out to be crap, and glean some secret joy from that(there's far to many killjoys like that already)...I just calls 'em as I sees 'em.
-
Why so much negativity! This is going to be the best of the many polished turds Hollywood produces! They have no original ideas, their watered-down scripts are nothing but propaganda at best and the rest, drivel. You should be used to this by now. Can't wait for the Sean Penn version of Forbidden Planet. SUCKERS.
-
make us happy and describe it.
-
No one's screaming bloody murder over the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" remake. And let us not forget about Mr. Beard's "War of the Worlds". Remakes, like sequels are never going to stop because they're less risky than something new. People start talking about remakes and sequels immediately after the project is announced, and regardless of whether it's positive or negative buzz, people are going to fill theaters to find out how it compares to the originals. Until we start piling into the multiplexes for original fare, the remake parade will never cease.
-
Damn You MCMLXXVI
-
Hey movie fans... check out this great new blog called thebitterproducer.blogspot.com
thank me later :D -
"Not many people have seen it". What-thefuck-ever. Is it on DVD? Yep. Is it on TV? Yep. How on Earth is a classic movie being old or current audience ignorance JUSTIFICATION for a remake? What, we need a marketing campaign to alert people to such a cool movie and then give them what generally (outside of a few exceptions) is an imitation and secondary film in both senses of the word. It was ALWAYS be true that "AWESOME SPECIAL EFFECTS" will get better, but that just creates a revolving door of remakes yet is not justification - it's the tail wagging the dog. If only 1 in 500 people have seen it, do what they did with The Exorcist and give it a limited theatrical re-release, at least that's more honest than saying it's a great movie people should know about then giving them a different movie. Especially if you change the key plot mechanics, as Morgoth said. I wouldn't be so much of a 'hater' if at least it WAS more of a carbon copy that didn't essentially invert the message. I'd rather go see Wall-e. And no, I don't hate Canoo-ey. I'd be happier if they were just "inspired by" and all the names and title was changed.
Tell me, what's the logic of remaking a film if your argument is that audiences don't know it's a remake? Why even use the original title if audiences don't know it's a remake? If you're changing the core why call it a remake? Fine, go ahead, but don't live vicariously through the original by using the name or characters.
Lime, read his post again, as you were so busy posting your Keanu love you didn't reply to his, that it changes the very nature of the film. You DO sound like a 13 year old girl though. You threw a party? Are you kidding me?
Having said that though I think your name is awesome. But only if it refers to Harry Nilsson's original, not the horrid remakes. Oh the irony! -

The original Day the Earth Stood Still was the first movie
by half vader
to use crowd replication. They did a quadruple exposure for each corner of the park and moved the crowd around accordingly. The only thing Forrest Gump did was do it digitally rather than photochemically. Same thing though.
-
You are blasting people who have read the script or don't like Keanu, telling them not to prejudge without seeing the movie... yet you are prejudging as well. Just 100% positively. There's not a single concern in all your posts. That said... it is curious you know a load of facts -- that it is will take place DC though shot in Vancouver, is not solely environmental, debuted in Amsterdam with a great Keanu performance, you have Gort concept art... I'm sure you will just say you are an uber-fan and this is "research." But it is curious. And whether or not Keanu is as good of an actor as the original... he has zero MYSTERY, which is a main component. Yes, Keanu will have his own take, but that is why some are up in arms. :-)
-
I mean "meh." :-)
-
"Jerk"...oooooooohhhh...I'm soooo scared. What was the subtleties of the original movie if you're so smart? Did you even read the story, "Farewell To the Master" the original film was based on? The new plot has resembles "Godzilla Vs. the Smog Monster" more than the '51 version. In the original story, we were a threat to the outer worlds as Earth was rapidly discovering the possibilities of nuclear power and that Earth's use of aggression would not be tolerated. In the new "plot" Klatuu is all upset that we're destroying our planet and he's going to destroy it for us. Why would he or any other alien race give a fuck? Did he create the Earth? Is he Slardi Bartfast? No. Go read the book. RedHHades; yes, it was the Derrikson version. If you get a chance; watch "Sailor of the King." with Jeffery Hunter and Michael Rennie. Its based on Forrester's "Brown On Resolution." Though, Rennie has a smaller part; he's outstanding in it. He was also the captain of the "Titanic" in the "Time Tunnel" pilot as well. Another small part; but excellent when he's on the screen. As for a stand alone movie; no. I wouldn't go see this. It just doesn't interest me. The main problem in it is that there isn't the human interaction the original had. Plus, some of the logic in the story doesn't make sense especially with the "Mr. Wu(Or "Mr. Whoa" as one poster nicely added.) character. I'm also burned out on the dysfunctional family syndrome as well as the funny, talking animal movies.
-
that's a prediction, and this is yet another pointless, turdy remake idea.
-
but has more coverage than the new X-Files movie. I sense a conspiracy...
-
After a bit of research via Google I would say that I'm even more skeptical about this film than before. Can anybody confirm the John Cleese casting rumour?
-
I saw the original and it was pretty okay but it all comes down the hippie-gay ending - what other excitement in this movie could there possibly be? Oh man, what a bad idea.
-
Will Nibbler be in this one too?
-
John Cleese is professor Barnhardt in the new version.
-
Thanks for answering Uncapie. As you know, I disagree with a lot of your opinions, but I respect it and I respect the love you feel for the original movie (although that's exactly what makes you so biased). I am really interested in this remake and would like to hear a fair opinion about it, and I know this site won't be the ideal place to get it. :) BTW, thanks for the suggestions of movies, I will try to find "Sailor of the King" , never saw it. I have nothing against Michael Rennie, as I said, I think he was a good actor. But, IMO, not an outstanding one. I am really curious about the take Keanu will have on the character. Although I know you don't like him, I think he is a very interesting actor who has an unique take about his work and characters. His choices are really uneven and sometimes you scratch your head trying to understand what the hell of vision the guy has about the world, but, for me, that only adds to his appeal. I would (dare) suggest you to watch him in The Last Time I Commited Suicide, The Gift and A Scanner Darkly. The Ted/Neo vision most people have about him is really unfair when put in perspective with his whole career, mostly when facing his independent movies. As for the new TDTESS version, well, we will have to wait to see how all those changes will work on screen, and that will really depends of Scott Derrickson. I think we have very little from him yet to make a fair judgement and I am hoping his vision will surprise us. Call me optimist, whatever. But the story you described in your review looked interesting to me. Anyway, we are only starting here, next week: the trailer!
-
I'll be seeing the trailer again this morning within the hour, and will post a detailed description shortly(Admittedly, I wasn't paying THAT much attention to it yesterday, so details will be forthcoming soon).
-
Thanks man. But... please, be fair. :)

20th Century Fox logo
Shot of two motorcycles leading a van
Voiceover:"Attention Everyone...please move to the courtyard blah blah blah..leave your celphones something something....."
Jon Hamm to Jennifer Connelly; "its very important I have you on this team"(hurrying away) "Dont be afraid"
Connelly; "Afraid of what?"
several quick shots
Keanu Reeves at table(wired with sensors) being interrogated...Scientist says something about establishing questions.
"Are you in a seated position?" "yes"
"Do you feel pain?" "My body does"
"are you here?" My body is"
"do you know of an imminent attack.....on the planet earth?"
Reeves; "you should really let me go"
Quick shots of soldiers , a large metallic orb rising out of the ground, Connelly running, low shots of several NY landmarks (Empire State Building, St Patricks Cathedral) with celestial glowing light behind them, soldiers in woods with glowing light from behind trees
Soldier: "Did you feel that?"
Shot of what looks to be Yankee Stadium being destroyed GGI style, several other quick shots, crowd of people bathed in glowing light
Title on black: The Day The Earth Stood Still
Reeves and Connelly on screen. Reeves: "if the earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth lives".
That may not be verbatim, as I was only able to sneak a look at it once this morning( and my memory isn't what it used to be in my old age), but that's the gist of it. And, not really having paid close attention to it yesterday, I was overly harsh in my inital appraisal of it. It looks like it might be okay(he said cautiously). -
The original focused on weapons being destroyed. If the focus has changed to "Nature" (which is a bad ideal as others have stated) shouldn't a power plant or a polluting factory be targeted? Is baseball that dangerous? Can we not enjoy our hot dogs and lemon drink?
-
hopefully the trailer will hit the 'net soon.
-
Nudity.
-
BTW, thanks very much SubliminalJones, I am looking forward to it.
-
...because they CAN. It's that simple. As much as the cynic in me wants to believe that Hollywood has run out of original ideas (which it no doubtedly HAS), the truth of the matter is that the studios OWN these properties and they will revisit them, rework them and ruin them ad infinitum.
How does one explain the FOURTH remake of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". Did we need another remake? Was the original broken? Or even the great sequel? No.
What about King Kong? The original was a classic but lacked box-office credibility. So it was redone in '76. Presto. Made a star of Jessica Lange. But put it in the hands of Peter Jackson -- a multi-Oscar winning director -- and the studio has its first chance to actually recoupe on a 60 year-old property.
There IS something to be said about selling these movies to a new generation. The hysteria of our times was the motivation for re-doing "Invasion"...a cash in on fear...just like monster movies in the '50s capitalizing on the nuclear threat...or spy movies in the '60 capitalizing on the Red Scare...or horror movies in the '70s capitalizing on...well...ticket receipts.
Now the horror flicks are being remade...and are, ironically, less scary than the originals because film-making has become a bean-counter's artform...not a director or producer's artform.
Some food for thought:
James Bond's "Dr. No" is the most remade movie in the history of cinema. The Broccoli family has remade it 21 times. -
i'd agree that the same damn bond film has been made over and over, except the first three dr. no, from russia with love, and goldfinger, and the fifth on her majesty's secret service, they were tight little thrillers, which followed their novels down pat. but the rest of the 16 are the same shtick with different coatings.
