Bob The Tomato and his report on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2
Hey folks, Bob the Tomato here sent in the following scoop, and if you like this, you simply have to check out this excellent website on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 news and rumors..... Click here to check this cool site out!
The shoot of MI2 has become slighly hectic lately. The first thing was the much needed firing of Andrew Lesnie the DP on the project. He
took way too much time and the flick would have crash landed on Memorial Day weekend if they had kept him. Cruise has been his usual
perfectionist self lately which is in a word: nervewracking. Woo is too humble to argue so he just does his best on each shot. The script is
actually written by Woo and Towne. Woo and Towne spent two months together every day working on the script until it was perfect. Woo
wanted emotion and heroics. They delivered. Now the film is about 50% rip roaring action and 50% romance (between Thandie and Tom) But I
have recieved tons of e-mails asking me one burning question: will there be shootouts? And I am sad to say at this point there are none in the
script. But Woo is aiming for huge varying actions scenes, and I guarantee you this film is going to deliver, for anyone in Sydney watch Bare
Island for a friggin huge big action scene to be filmed there in the coming weeks. Oh, and Harry this film has many a twist in the LA
Confidential tradition, in other words they are decipherable if you get into the flick.

P.S. By the way, John Woo has final cut on this project now. Also Christian Wagner (editor from Face/Off) and Danny Elfman are on the project. They will
easily make December 17.

...IM FIRST... yes i know that's stupid an immature so I'll just say that John Woo + no shootouts = waste of talent
-
I like John Woo and all Face Off was brilliant but i think that he is a bit too sentimental at times-the end of FACE OFF was hilarious meant to be obviously
but I laughed at the end of the killer too.I rather have more action thanks very much. -
I think Face/Off showed us all that Woo can do his style of film in the Hollywood arena and not have it screwed up. The fact that he has final cut can only be a good sign. The reports of his humbling to Cruise sounds strange though. I mean this is a man who managed to direct Travolta *and* Cage well in the same movie. To frank, Cage's dual performance was superior to his landmark Leaving Las Vegas in every way.
Anyway, the fact that there are no shootouts in the script is actually a good thing. The brilliance of his sequences means that we tend to overlook that he's as good as Scorcese at directing. This film will still rock, in a big time stylee.
To paraphrase Neil Gaiman, once you get known for a certain thing, for being different from the rest of the pack, the fans just want you to carry on doing the same thing. I think Woo is about to show us a few new tricks. -
Bob the Tomato, did you take Larry the Cucumber with you? For those not in the know, check out Veggie Tales, starring the 2 aforementioned, and the COOLEST kids' video series I've ever seen. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to this picture.

I thought the ending of Face/Off was a little too sentimental, but he would have gotten away with it if he'd done it in Hong Kong. I probably would have left Archer stuck looking like Troy, but kept the rest of the ending. However the ending of The Killer is *not* funny (apart from that great visual gag when Jeff and Jenny are crawling to each other), it's poignantly sad yet uplifting. Plus the whole film was romance and action, just like MI2 sounds to be. You'd think this sounds good to a guy who names himself after the lead character in the greatest romantic action comedy ever made.
-
I'm just so happy that Hollywood is finally coming to their senses (at least Cruise is) and gradually leaving all their racial prejudices behind. I know there is usually an uproar when they have an interracial romance on screen even if it is a small film but I'm am so happy that MI2 will be half about the the relationship between Cruise and Thandie Newton. Obviously Cruise is more open-minded than that. As a matter of fact, I think Hallie Berry was supposed to play Newton's part but they had scheduling conflicts. Well there is some progress. It's about time Just wanted to speak on that. Thanks Tom, bye!

I don't know, I just don't know. I love the fact that Woo is at the helm of MI2 yet at the same time I would hope fans don't peg him to have his usual ultra-violent shoot outs in a Mission Impossible flic, I just don't think that would go. Don't get me wrong it would look friggin awesome, "YEAH BABY!!" but Im not sure it would fit right with the type of film this is. So Im glad in a sense Woo has strayed away from that aspect, and that there will be super cool stunts, incuding that motorcycle thing, as well as a great plot twist, im intersted.
-
I'm a big fan of Cruise, Elfman and sometimes Towne but I don't know about Woo. I hate those pretentious, unrealistic slow mo shoot outs. If these characters and story are anything like L.A. Confidential's, I'll be very pleasantly surprised. Just don't have a dumb ending that spoonfeeds the plot and allows dead characters to ride off with skanky prostitutes. AND DON'T LET WOO DO THOSE SLOW MO SHOOT OUTS!
-
Hey, Kahotec,it's me again!! Did you read my response in the South Park article? Anyways, this is not what this talk back is about. Someone mentioned that it's great to see Hollywood break down the racial barriers, right? Well, let's see a romance between Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts... or how about Wesley Snipes and Cameron Diaz.... or maybe Chow Yun Fat and Mira Sorvino. If the tables are turned, you think the movie would get the green light? I don't fuckin think so.
-
Here's my theory. Given how I'v seen it happen to others, I've got atheory that if I make just one post a day, I'll be a mini-celebrity on this site in about a month. So I'm coming in every day and just posting one message and see hoe long it takes for me to be mentioned in other people's posts regulary. Anyway, Jhon Woo rocks the fucking earth, but I'm sceptical about the lack of gunfights. I mean, what the hell else is Jhon Woo good for, besides crafting characters you care about and stories that intrest you. I'll attempt to keep my mind open and see if Jhon Woo+No Shootouts can equal a good movie. Who knows.
-
Seems that you people are at a standoff about shootouts or no shootouts. I personally think it will rock either way, but honestly I'd love to see if Woo can throw in a shootout, considering he finally got topped in the Matrix, I want to see him get his reign back.
-
I think it wouldn't be too hard for anyone to top the first one, in terms of story, and Woo is just the guy to make me forget the first one existed and judge this one on its own merits. He is about the only reason why I would pay to see the sequel. Thadine is a major plus as well.
As for the lack of gun play, well, hey, MI was always about skill and intrigue, and if you;ve watched the HK It Takes a Theif, you can see Woo's work in humorouse, dangerpacked action where the heros rely more on fast thinking the full auto. Woo at least tries to pack heart and soul in his movies, so when the violence happens, it is both cool and repellent.
Which leads me to Bob's comment on Woo being topped by the Lametrix. Come on.. Woo has created cinemeatic magic using wires, slightly safer saftey glass, and the afforementioned heart and soul. True, much of his HK works can suffer in the plot department.. almost all HK action films tend to worry a little less about a fool proof plot, and more about characters and action, but you always cared.
Lamtrix- millions of dollars, computers, and what do you get- a washed out, soulless confection where it doesn't matter how cool the action sequences are, because the acting sucks and everything draws attention to it being CGI enhanced anyway. Woo uses the slow mos for dramatic affect, the Wack Brothers like a kid using reply on a Nintendo to show how cool he was when he killed a disposable bob in a video game.
So Woo was topped by the Matrix? No. Will MI2 top MI1, and possibly be a good movie? I'm willing to bet way to much money..possible $11 dollars by the time it gets out
if NY prices continue to rise, on it both vastly superior to MI1, and thanks to Woo, a kick ass flick as well.
(By the way, just so no one e-mails me in two years or so demanding their money, I was speaking figuratively about the bet. Most people would recognize that, but better safe than sorry.
Oh, and good article, Bob. -
I had to say that....I said that action scene not the film topped Woo. (although I personally believe Matrix to be one of the best films of all time, sorry)
-
Its going to be difficult, what with the delays, but it appears that the film should be done by December 17, 1999. Remember, Lethal Weapon 4 started filming in January 98 and was released in July 98. Paramount doesn't have a Christmas release, so they are probably pushing for the film to be ready by then.
-
50% action and 50% romance means 0% spy/espionage suspense. Since Mission Impossible was a spy/espionage tv show, and not an action or romance show, I would have to say that as a MI movie this will really suck. I would rather see Woo do a film that fits him than see both a Mission Imossible film and a new John Woo film ruined because of an ill-considered pairing. I like John Woo, but I love Mission Impossible (the tv series) but if I was mainly a John Woo fan I would still be unhappy that he is doing this film, that he is totally inapropriate for, instead of a different, more apropriate film. Sometimes the pieces might all be good, but when put together they just don't fit right, or worse, they build a robot Joey Lawrence-monkey. that breaks through your wall, bends your clothes pole, and wrecks your houses' foundation.
-
Would you care to define "no shoot outs"? I was out at Bare Island watching them film today. One of the scenes was a motor bike screaming down a hill onto a small wooden bridge whilst being shot at. There's also a scene under the bridge with a half submerged Ford.
-
Um, that is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard, MI2 is going to gross over 250mil and TWINE might make 100mil. Comparing the two is just brainless, TWINE being competition? What in the heck? This is a JOHN WOO FILM!!! 'Nuff said.
