Herc’s Pal Sarah Watson Wrote Monday’s Installment Of ABC Family’s New Sci-Fi Comedy-Adventure THE MIDDLEMAN!!

Published at:  Jun 24, 2008 12:48:42 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Sarah Watson, close personal friend of mine, has landed a gig as writer-producer on the new sci-fi adventure comedy “The Middleman,” and the first Watson-penned episode of the series hits ABC Family this very evening.

Created by first-season “Lost” writer-producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the show has been loading up on generally positive reviews, including one that hit the New York Times only today:

… sometimes, as in the case of ABC Family’s new comic-based series “The Middleman,” evil is downright funny. … full of hilarious throwaways … The genius is in the details. … Saving the world is easy; making a world as complex and funny as this one is the real feat of “Middleman.”

That’s right: The Times loves it!

The channel says of tonight's installment:

When a Terra Cotta Warrior is brought back to life, The Middleman and Wendy set out to stop him before he can take the last living heir of the Qin dynasty to the land of the dead, releasing a hail of fire that will rain down on the Earth for a thousand years. With some help from fashionista and reformed succubus, Roxy Wasserman, the two must make a daring trip to the underworld to get the deed done. But will Wendy be able to focus on their latest mission, or will the fallout of her argument with Lacey get in the way? Still stinging from Wendy's harsh criticisms, Lacey lands herself a job as Roxy's assistant, which tests her activist spirit.

I conclude by warning the talkbackers below this post to watch their mouths. While Sarah is young, pretty and blonde, she’s also over six feet tall in running shoes and extremely athletic, and would find no difficulty in beating obnoxious nerds to tiny bloody mounds of pale, doughy, sweaty fanboy flesh.

    ABC Family?

    by savage lucy

You lost me at ABC Family. Isn't everything on that channel sanitized to appeal to middle American dolts? Congrats to your friend for getting a show on the air, but it is only ABC Family, the equivalent of public access cable in my opinion.

don't you know a first thing about nerd fantasies?
why not add that, during the beating, she'll be wearing 7of9/starbuck/buffy/whatever costume while you're at it...?

The writing is crackingly but the production values of this show are appalling, they're obviously cutting corners at every opportunity.

    by mockingbuddha

It's lucky to be on at a time when all my other shows are on hiatus. I can let my kids watch it too so that's pretty cool. Also at least the writers know Powers is a good comic so there's hope for them. Trik_SterYou can see the shows streaming on ABC Family's website.

    minus the gay stuff.
plus the gilmore girls dialogue (insert obligatory herc-liked-gilmore-girls-so-herc-must-be-a-THIRTEEEEEEN!!!!11-year-old-girl joke here).
I hated the promos for the show. kinda liked the pilot. will reserve my judgment until I've seen at least 3-4 episodes though.
and, as someone already pointed out, it's not as if there's anything else to watch right now...

Sarah Watson = 1/2 of the "Herc" moniker?

    by prof. pop-cult

There's been speculation that the "Herc" moniker is shared by two people, one female and one male. The male writes under the pseudonym the most, supposedly, while the female is a television scriptwriter.

    by bones

Natalie Morales is hot (especially when kicking it in her glasses), Matt Keesler is square jawed and a throwback, the plots are silly and the dialogue is a hoot. A Hoot, I say. It is a little short on spectacle, but that is it's budget. Low-budget brings it's own charms.
And to those who compare it to old "Doctor Who" and the Live Action "The TICK" as a bad thing...Go fuck yourselves with a rented dick.

    Just more proof...

    by sledge hammer

...that there's always a certain percentage of people who really will watch any piece of paint-by-numbers shit that's put in front of them, especially if the leads are "pretty" enough. No wonder reality tv rules the airwaves.

"Isn't everything on that channel sanitized?"

    by redfang

These days, not so much. Heck, they showd "Cruel Intentions" back in 2005, though I kinda suspect they cut it a bit.
As for "Middleman", it's goofy, moderately-smart fun. The production values are really, really low-rent, but the writing and dialog are witty (though I'm not sure what was up with all the background references to "Dune" this ep), and I find the leads appealing enough.
Heck, it's based on a tiny independent comic book (written by a writer for "Lost"), so there's some geek cred right there. ;)

    by bigbill

While funny as shit, it was a step down from the pilot. I think MM will follow the Buffy Pattern, Joss Scripts will be 3 star and better, other writers might hit 3 stars on a good day.
    I gave the MM pilot 5 stars, #2 was 3 1/2 stars
