Coaxial News: seeking sponsorship !!!

Published at:  Jun 03, 1999 12:08:49 PM CDT

Glen here...

...who has been spending a lot of time the last few days trying to spruce up Coaxial's future
coverage by getting on various mailing lists, preview tape lists for series, etc. in an effort to bring you
more frequent, more pointed, more enjoyable coverage of television and home video throughout the
year.

This is no easy task: but thanks to the Herculean efforts of my good friend THE ORACLE, we
may actually be getting somewhere. Re-arranging things around here generally happens about once
a year, usually in the summer time. So here we are.

But there is one issue which still needs to be addressed:

Regular readers of Coaxial may recall a period of time last year when I had to leave AICN &
Coaxial in order to keep myself afloat. See, Coaxial actually takes a bit of money to run: money for
numerous long-distance calls, FedEx accounts, etc. - all deeply consequential in my effort to bring
you as much as I can in the way of cool TV related news, all the unfortunate by-product of deadlines
imposed by a medium which comes a bit more fast and furiously than film.

I.E. - there's a lot of
behind-the-scenes minutia which generally goes unrecognized by the masses. It's pretty much up
to me to find "sponsorship" which allows me to (more or less) finance / run Coaxial on a monthly
basis.

Last year, a music label named Sonic Images saved the day. Recently, however, Sonic has
become unable to sponsor this page anymore - effectively (if unintentionally) hanging me out to dry.
As such, I am posting this in the hopes that some small / medium-sized organization out there would
be interested in providing Coaxial with an extremely equitable (hundreds of dollars, not thousands)
monthly check (within a gurataneed window of check delivery each month - i.e. "first week"..."second
week"...etc.) in exchange for a "sponsored by" text link immediately below the Coaxial logo on every
Coax page.

The link can be changed with some frequency, if you like - this might help escalate the number of
click throughs. I am told somewhere between 700-1000 click throughs a month left Coaxial
through the Sonic Images sponsorship link during their time on the site - and the link never changed.
Not to mention the god-knows how many people see the link, providing instant exposure of your
company or its services.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THREE IMPORTANT FACTORS HERE:

1) In no way do I profit from this sponsorship: this is simply an infusion of funding which
enables Coax to operate and stay alive. This isn't fun money for me.

2) In no way does a company's sponsorship of this page impact my coverage of said
company's products. So if you sell videos, produce CDs, etc. I am still going to be fair and
objective in my praise or criticism of said material (should I review them on the site). This isn't buying
favoritism.

3) I can only offer you a text link: no banners, period. That creates some contractual
issues with the ad-sales folks, and I'm not going there.

If you're at all interested in this opportunity, feel free to reach me through the contact information
below and we can discuss the matter further. Thank You very much for your time and
consideration in this matter...

Re: THE SLIPPERY ROAD TO... ((from COAXIAL))

    by coaxial

YOJIMBO: your points are well taken. But anyone who knows me would tell you in an instant that I am completely uncorruptable - and would gladly self-destruct Coaxial before compromising my principles (I know this sounds kind of funny, but I'm actually serious).**Glen**

Hey Glen, since you are planning for the future...

    by spike lee

please start posting information on video game and DVD releases. I love climbing over to the other side of the fence, but unfortuneatly for me I just don't watch that much television, except for Seinfeld reruns. I think just the video game articles would give you double the hits. Thank you and good luck on landing the sponsor.

  • SPIKE: I think I may be in the process of breaking the back on DVD coverage, that's part of what I've been working on the last few days. 'Tis a difficult area: there are many great sites out there which provide great coverage. As far as the videogame field, that's a different beast altogether. Early on in Coaxial, I posted a few videogame related news items, which were met with SEVERE hostility from videogame folks at other sites. I also understand that the nature of the industry makes gaming considerably harder to cover - often travel is required to play certain games, go to certain Consumer Electronics Shows, etc. - which requires a budget Coaxial simply does not have. In a perfect world, however, I would be DELIGHTED to cover video games, as I'm something of a videgame junkie.**Glen**

    Cross pollinating

    by ingram av98

Maybe the costs of reviews could be shared ove a few websites.

Take the Linux community, they share news over a lot of pages (Linux Today, Linux.com, Slashdot, Red Hat et al).

If the sites that do TV reviews pool their resources, maybe the cost reductiosn could benifit all round.

    integrity

    by ardeth

I can vouch for Glen's integrity. He would either give his honest opinion, or nothing at all. He would not tell you to "check it out", if he felt it was not worth your time and money. Take notice on how much he posts, how often he posts, and what he posts. It's not one op-ed piece after another. And he certainly doesn't write in elipses to cover his ass.

    money from the banners

    by adam

hey Glen I was curious about something. For a while Harry talked about how he wasn't getting any money from the ads on the site becasue it was all going to pay back Jamison/Gold for all their services. Well I'm guessing from the fact that Harry doesnt mention selling collectibles anymore, that he bought a car, and apparently does some amount of traveling that he now gets a good amount of money form these adds now. So my question is, Do you get any portion of that. Since you run Coaxial it would certainly seem reasonable. Anyway, I was just wondering.

    Re: ad banners ((from COAXIAL))

    by coaxial

    Adam, good question!

The site doesn't generate enough money for Harry and I to profit from to any real extent.

Harry's recent life changes and acquisitions come from some periphery writing deals he is enjoying - and are generally completely unrelated to the site's income from ad banners.**Glen**

    Major Studio Sponsor Ship....

    by 20th century fox

As a person who works at a major film studio I feel that the thought of taking money from them opens the door to pandering instead of objective journalism. (glen this is not a slam on your principals just a well know fact.)It also raises too many questions if Warner Bros. sponsors you and flies you out to LA for the world priemere of Wild Wild west and you give it a glowing review (Even if you REALLY DO LIKE THE FILM) Many will screm that your just doingt what your croprate masters are telling you or the bought you cheap. Surely there must be companies out there that have little connection to the entertainment industry or those that do have little bearing on how well the film story line or plot is. (Musco Light Panivsion camers etc...) Oh well I'll just sit back and listen to hate mail
