Darwin reports on THE RED VIOLIN

Published at:  Jun 03, 1999 1:37:09 AM CDT

Harry here, to let you read about this... Samuel L Jackson's latest flick. No matter what, I'm in the theater. You can't keep me away from a Sam Jackson film. Here's Darwin...

Hi Harry, Darwin here. One of the perks of working in Lincoln
Center is that I'm constantly surrounded by Cool Stuff. Last night, we
got comp tickets for the NYC premiere of The Red Violin, with Carlo
Cecchi, Greta Scacchi, and Samuel L. Jackson. I must confess, I didn't
have high hopes for this movie. I'd seen the trailer a few weeks ago,
and while my friend raved about how good it looked, I thought'd be a
snoozer. Luckily, I was wrong. It turned out to be a really cool
movie. I feel like a pseudointellectual weenie using words like
"intriguing" and "captivating" in a movie review, but I kind of have to
here - it really was fascinating. (Actually, as long as I'm being
pretentious, I should really refer to it as a "film.")

This film follows the path of a violin as it passes from owner
to owner over the centuries. It actually centers around a modern day
auction of the instrument - because of the violin's rich history, there
are many people who have a very strong interest in acquiring it. As we
learn about the story of the violin, they continually flash back to the
auction, which we see through the eyes of all the different people who
are bidding on the instrument.

See now, I've gone and made it sound boring. It's not. It's
really cool. Check it out. Oh, and if you can possibly avoid it, try
not to have old fogies sitting behind you who giggle self-consciously
during the naked parts.

    What took so long

    by john shaft

This film was released over here a few months back (here being england). I don't recall seeing a single good review for it, and yes, Greta Scaachi Does get her kit off. Check out Sams haircut though. By the way, I'm first so that other people don't put "I'm First" as their subject.

This is perhaps the best Canadian movie since Decline of the American Empire, with all due respect to The Sweet Hereafter. It is well written, superbly acted, and beautiful cinematography (yeah, in a Canadian movie, who would have guessed?). It is terribly Canadian, we seem to be the masters of the short story and multiple story films (Last Night, the aforementioned Decline), but very watchable. For people worried about Sam Jackson's "coolness" quotient, he's as cool holding a violin as he is holding a gun. BTW, for the person who said he can't remember it getting good reviews, perhaps not in England, but here in Canada it won raves, and Roger Ebert and a couple of other American critics loved it. Viva Canada!

    Just a so-so film

    by sveinung

While Jackson was cool as usual, this film was really nothing to get excited about. It's about a musical instrument, bascially. Hilary and Jackie is one of the best films I've seen in the last month, and The Red Violin isn't, because the fascinating thing is not the instrument, but the people who play them.

While I agree with you about Hillary and Jackie being a great movie, I disagree that Red Violin was about the instrument, it was about the people who come in to contact with the instrument and how (SPOILER WARNING)**************************************************************************************************************************************** their lives are affected by the spirit that inhabits the violin through the special paint job (END OF SPOILER). Particularly powerful is the story of brilliant musician and his his lust for music and women. Ahhh but that's what differing opinions are about, right?

    Giraud

    by rocketracoon

Hope this one's good. Been waiting along time for it. Almost caught it when it played in Vancouver over the Xmas Holidays. This movie is the same team that brought you 32 SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLEN GOULD - my vote for one of the best films in the '90s. If you like good , creative , independent filmmaking, everybody should go out and support these guys. An epic at 11 million...financed through a myriad of foriegn sources...pretty ambitous...look forward to seeing more from team Mckellar and Giraud.

PS: Giraud also directed the Secret World concert from P. Gabriel

    Great Canadian Films

    by herman snerd

The Red Violin once again proves that Canadian films are among the best in the world. Accolates go out to great Canadian filmmakers such as David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, Don McKeller, Denys Arcand, Sandy Wilson, Bruce McDonald and many many more who stayed here, stuck to their vision and made great films. They are blazing the path for the future generation of Canadian filmmakers.
Here is a short list of Canadian Films that must be seen by anyone who loves the movies.

Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch - David Cronenberg

Speaking Parts, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter - Atom Egoyan

32 Short Films about Glen Gould (co-writer) Last Night, The Red Violin (co-writer) - Don McKeller

The Decline of the American Empire
Jesus of Montreal - Denys Archand

My American Cousin - Sandy Wilson

Road Kill, Highway 61, Dance Me Outside - Bruce McDonald

    Voice of reason

    by movie_ignoramus

After reading for two years, I finally will post! With all due respect to my fellow Canadians, this film is just okay. I saw it last winter, and I admit the producers got big bang for their buck on this one. Simply having a watchable movie from your own country is cool in itself, and having Jackson as a coolass in it as well just plain rocks. I don't know if other folks (non-canadians) would get as big a kick out of it. Montreal could have been supplanted by metropolis, USA and this film would not have suffered one bit. It's a well made film and they squeezed everything from their budget to get an epic feel for a low cost. End of my lecture.

The trailer for that movie was awful. It gave away the whole plot.It ranks up there with the trailer for Pleasantville for giving away the whole fuckin' movie!
I am Canadian, but haven't seen" Red violin" yet.But I saw "Last Night" and loved it.

    The Red Violin

    by jackfoley

???? This is hardly news, nor an early report on the film. It's been out forever. Unlike the general feeling for the film shown here in talkback, I loved it. Some sections don't work, but the rest (the Montreal, Vienna, and China sections) I especially enjoyed. There are twists and turns, some are not that great, and it's about 20 minutes too long, but it's wonderful.

    The Red Violin

    by ophelia gabrieli

Rented the Red Violin...had to wait until 1am to watch it because I'm the only one in the house who can follow a subtitled flick, but it was well worth being a total zombie the next day.
LOVED it LOVED it LOVED it.
    The tarot cards as a mis-en-scene (how's that for a pretentious O-I-have-an-English-degree term? ;) )
    was a wonderful idea.
What I really loved was that although I knew all the time what made the red violin red, when I actually saw him draining the blood from her arm to add to the varnish it absolutely chilled my blood. How 'bout you?
    Ciao for now,
    OP
