Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 3rd week of June DVDs: Popeye, Pot, Bananas, Nude Bombs and a Fanny!
Hey folks, Harry here - Not much coming out this week that I can really recommend. That said what is here is fun and cool - at least by my estimation. As always the box art and titles are clickable to Amazon where you can learn more on the title - as well as purchase it, where a small portion will go to support this column. Here ya go...

POPEYE THE SAILOR: 1938-1940, Vol. 2
The classic POPEYE cartoons are absolute bliss. This isn’t that crap Famous Studios color stuff, but the black & white Fleischer classics which feature some of the greatest animation and animated gag work in the history of the medium. Here you get 31 classic Popeyes – including two JEEP cartoons and one of my all time faves… GOONLAND! Also on here is the color classic Popeye – ALADDIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP. Also on here is a great OUT OF THE INKWELL: THE FLEISCHER STORY documentary and the feature animated classic GULLIVER’S TRAVELS – and still yet more goodies. They just need to add a few cans of spinach and a gift certificate for POPEYE’S CHICKEN.

THE SWORD IN THE STONE ( 45th Anniversary Special Edition )
I’m an EXCALIBUR freak – and love and have always loved that version of the Arthur tale – but – when Disney took their turn at it – well… it’s kinda the most adorable thing ever. The transformation battle is one of my favorite wizard battles ever – and so damn cute. It wasn’t one of Disney’s best – but damn if it isn’t fun as can be. I so can’t wait for these animated classics to begin hitting Blu Ray. But the first will be SLEEPING BEAUTY and then NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. That’ll be bliss.

FANNY
Not sure if you grew up in love with Leslie Caron… but I was. The first thing you’ll notice about this film is just how stunningly beautiful it is. A large part of that credit goes to Jack Cardiff (Cinematographer to the Gods) – That makes this film work – along with the performances by Leslie Caron, Charles Boyer and the amazing Maurice Chevalier. While it didn’t rack up the Oscars it did acquire 5 nominations – and is superior work. Really beautiful film.

THE NUDE BOMB
Quint went to see the new GET SMART movie last night… I stayed at home to watch THE NUDE BOMB – the real GET SMART movie – and ya know… I think Quint did the right thing. The original film lives better in memory than it does playing in front of you. But it is fun and goofy – and that’s good. I just wish they’d adapted THE NUDE BOMB as the main threat in the new film… because Anne Hathaway nudity is always a fine selling point.

THE CARMEN MIRANDA COLLECTION – ( THE GANG’S ALL HERE / IF I’M LUCKY / SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS / GREENWICH VILLAGE / DOLL FACE )
This is the highlight of the week. Most of you probably have never seen Carmen Miranda in a film – but instead remember Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck putting fruit on their heads – wrapping a sarong around them and doing a “Boom chicka Boom Chicka Boom” type of number in various Warner cartoons. But the real Carmen Miranda on film was a crazed concoction unlike anything we’ve ever seen before or after. She was dripping smiling latin sex made over as a dancing fruit cocktail. The gold standard of her work was Busby Berkeley’s THE GANG’S ALL HERE – which is the most phallic imaged film ever made. It’s really unbelievable. It also serves as Busby’s sole directorial and Technicolor work and it is absolutely not to be missed under any circumstances. The other films are also delightful and wonderful. These films are great with rum drinks with diced fruit. But a warning – they may lead to cross-dressing and excessive domestic silliness. You have been warned. (That means you should definitely get this!)

SUPER HIGH ME
This ridiculous documentary was beloved by Annette Kellerman at SXSW this year – and it’s silly and also oddly revealing. For you 420 friendly types only. Or aspiring 420 followers.
Pretty slow week this week, but next week is a bit more fun with FUTURAMA: THE BEAST WITH A BILLION BACKS, 10,000B.C., THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (Blu Ray), IN BRUGES, PERSEPOLIS, XANADU, JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN, THE FURIES, MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES, CHARLIE BARTLETT, BEFORE THE RAIN, STEP INTO LIQUID (Blu Ray), MAID IN SWEDEN, SECOND COMING OF EVA, GOODBYE UNCLE TOM, HELL’S GROUND & Much More!

shit....nice ad for Universal Studios Tour. Memories

Smoke weed?
-
Not with any frequency. In fact not once this entire year, I'm sad to say. Pot saps one's productivity - and I'm lazy enough as it is.
-
And it's actually "it feels good. I got no pain in my neck now." :-)
-
The subject of this post made me think I was finally going to get a decent DVD of my favorite Woody Allen movie. I should have known better anyway.
-
You can actually make whatever you want to out of your experience. I clean my entire house when I do it. On top of increasing my Halo playing abilities about 100%
-
It's just mind-numbingly bad. I don't believe I've ever made it through a full short in my life. I put it in the same category as Alvin and the Chipmunks, that category is called, "awful entertainment".

ANYONE ELSE CREEPED OUT BY POPEYE & WOODY WOOD PECKER
by greigy just wanted to say
Or is it just me.... you know like a creeped out by clowns kinda way.
-
Love the guys work to death.. everything from the vikings to Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven) but was it me or did Rambo II look like a TV movie? I watched it recntly for the first time on god knows how long and it just looked like an episode of 80's television.... all the colours were just the wrong side of too warm....
-
I thought Harry was being picky, but that really is all that was released this week. And Be Kind Rewind.
-
i dont think its evil and wrong or stupid or whatever, if you wanna do it then do it but consider this. just about if not every movie or tv series reference or storyline about it is a comedy or done in a comedic way. i think that says a lot. sure some might say its because people do stupid funny things when high but i think its deeper than that. :P
-
Louis Leterrier should do a sequel to Robert Altman's film.
-
That's the movie I have been trying to remember. I saw it one lonely Sunday morning on TV as a kid. Oh and I am kind of bummed that the Sword in the Stone isn't on Blu Ray. I love that movie and was planning on buying it. I have a one year old daughter and would love to show that to her one day.
-
The Once and Future King is must read if you like Arthurian legend.
-
You are right, pot DOES sap your productivity. So stay away from it brother. We need you posting shit on the site all day long!!! Oh and on a side note....where my Blu Ray of Pete's Dragon?!
-
The minute my foot hit this banana peel.
-
No. How fast?<p>About 60 miles per hour.<p>Is that fast for a desk?
-
before you shoot me.<p>Whats that?<p>The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
-
Before the post-90's creative flame-out, it was one of the weakest Disney animated films.
-
You must immediately go watch the far superior Marcel Pagnol original french trilogy (Marius, Fanny and Cesar) that it was based on, and witness the genius work of Raimu, the man Orson Welles called the world's greatest actor.
-
we could go on and on. The Nude Bomb movie was a frequently watched VHS at the Egg Omlet house.
-
Fucking CUT IT OUT with that bullshit. It's NOT funny and repeating it in every talkback won't make it so.
-
...with the right script and talent, a direct-to-video SWORD IN THE STONE follow-up could've been one of the best sequels ever. <br><br> We'll never know, though.
-
Hey Harry, I'm surprised I didn't see Be Kind Rewind on your list today. I thought I saw some good reviews on your sight awhile back when it came to out.
-
if you're trying to lose weight.

I've heard an August release date for Forgetting Sarah Marshall
by Pennsy
True or not?
-
Maybe an unrated version with the theatrical one, cast/crew commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, featurettes...$88.8 million worldwide since its release. Hopefully it'll hit 90m by mid-July. It was the little movie that could - and did- succeed.
-
If GET SMART is a flop does this kill Carell's film career. He seems to appear in a lot of shit after making a splash with 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. I don't have a lot of hope for this film because you can't parody a TV show that was a huge parody itself. Austin Powers made three movies spoofing the spy genre. What are they going to do in this movie other than have Steve Carell fall down a lot?
-
I'm a narc

Call me when the Lupe Velez box set (with collectible replica sleeping pill bottle) comes out.
-
Just stay away from the baked goods with pot in them. They will fuck you up if you don't know what you are doing. But there is nothing wrong with smoking marijuana. At least it's natural, unlike alcohol or nicotine. Bad for your lungs? Use a smokeless machine. And it doesn't "sap one's productivity." That's a myth perpetuated by the government and uninformed dolts like Harry who were raised fearing it as a "gateway" to more dangerous and addictive drugs. Another crock of shit. Somebody's been watching Reefer Madness one too many times.
-
with the luscious Miss Hathaway. It was the old inhale-the-blow-dart gag. Hardee har har har....or Hardly har har har...<p>I loved Carell on The Daily Show, too bad Hollywood came and Hollywooded him up. Still love The Office though.
-
It was a wonderful movie. Yeah formulaic. Yeah the best jokes were given away in the trailers. But Gondry played that formula WELL and what made the film good wasn't the jokes anyway. I am also surprised to not see it on the list. It's the first Jack Black vehical I've enjoyed in some time.
-
I think Harry is wrong. I think both Harry and Quint should have picked up the box set of season 1 of Get Smart and avoided both movies.
-
are you going to post your thoughts on Prince Caspian, aka the best movie this summer?
-
You think anybody into Arthur, Camelot, and all that has never heard of The Once & Future King? Thanks a bunch Captain O.G.Readmore.
-
If so, can i get me some?
-
Prince Caspian was amazingly good, and deserved more coverage on this site.
-
Nicotine occurs naturally in tobacco, and most tobacco products only have natural levels of nicotine in them (some cigarettes are, natch, enhanced to up the effect). Alcohol is the natural product of fermentation.<br><br>Nothing wrong with marijuana, however, except for it being illegal, which I've always thought was stupid. Only reason I never smoke pot is the illegality issue (which has many attendant issues--I know more than one person who got held up at gunpoint seeking a little baggy).
-
Is the Black Cauldron. Sword and the Stone is top-notch, compared to that random mish-mash of fine animation an tedious story and pacing.
-
They need a remake of Pete's Dragon with the full CGI dragon . . . dragon should look just the same, just be fully rendered CGI. Plus, I never liked the kid in that movie, or Helen Reddy (sorry). And Mickey Rooney could reprise his roll . . . if they make it soon enough.
-
Unless, of course, they are referring to "Chicken of the Sea". But that would be a stretch. And confusing.
-
I've been looking forward to seeing the flick for a while.
-
so does alcohol. They're both sedatives. Doesn't mean thay aren't fun<P>Stupid bastard.
-
Popeye's restaurants are actually named after Popeye Doyle from The French Connection, not the spinach eating sailor.
-
Then who was Popeye Doyle named after? (I mean the Ed O'Neill Popeye Doyle, not the Gene Hackman Popeye Doyle.)
-
I do recall finding the 1989 "Get Smart" reunion TV movie slightly entertaining. The one that co-starred Q from ST:TNG. Never saw "Nude Bomb." Was there any actual nudity, or was there a lot of obstruction via fence posts, stop signs, and tennis racquets?
-
Weed absolutely saps your productivity. It is a combinations sedative/hallucinogen. I speak from experience. I am 37 and have smoked it 150 - 200 times over the last 20 years wth the density a lot higher in my late teens/early 20s. I never got anything productive done when I was high. Not knocking it. Just saying that if you take any sedative, you will be less productive (unless, I suppose, you were super hyper prior to smoking, then mabe it could even you out).
-
Yes, doing anything recreationally saps productivity, but the implication of the statement is that smoking weed destroys ones ambition to do anything else, which is malarky.
-
SAP productivity...especially for a casual user. I don't want Harry smokin' too often, I like these DVD Columns too much! I'll smoke more for ya Harry to even things out! =p
-
it was pretty much video games, TV, or chillin on the couch. Didn't see much housecleaning, landscaping, or financial work being done. Saying that's Government lies is just plain retardo. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Pwnedbystallone.
-
Blu ray hit today didn't it?
-
I want me a blu-ray version
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it come from leaves?
-
It's a waste product of a living organism.
-
Yep nicotine is from a plant. Nightshade. To clarify I meant naturally grown. But just fro the record cigarettes use chemicals to drive the nicotine to your brainmore easily. That isn't natural.
-
Pot hits different people differently. In me - when I get baked I go into idle mode. When I work usually, I have a movie playing and can do work as I watch a movie. On Pot - I will only watch the movie. My multi-tasking skills evaporate - and I just want to relax. <BR><BR>That said - If I turn the screen off - and focus on the computer - I can write enormous amounts. That said - I like to be able to multi-task and not get fixated on just a single thing. <BR><BR>Which is why Pot reduces my personal productivity.
-
Benson fan like me? Also isn't Super a Netflicks produced film? Like This film not yet rated? I like that they are such the anti Blockbuster. I work for a company that does work for Blockbuster, and all I keep thinking is man that accounts gonna go bust one of these days.
-
there is a difference in the strains of weed, people. look it up (my guess is hst666 was smoking more of an indica than a sativa )
-
anyone notice peopole whove smoked their whole lives look kind of pale, their eyes look sleepy and they act like vegetables? whenever you occasionally get some pothead leader of some pro-pot movement organization or who wrote a pro-book on it, as a guest on some TV show they look like the would rather be aimlessly wandering around a field or something. fuckin zombies
-
...much like SWORD IN THE STONE, is a few good moments wrapped in one big missed opportunity. <br><br> Elmer Bernstein's score, though, is one of his best.
-
that damn owl made the whole movie.
-
I agree with Harry, this is definitely one of those movies that you remember liking when you saw it as a kid but when you see it again years later you wonder what you were thinking.
-
Because nicotine isn't a plant.
-
Its called "amotivational syndrome". I shit you not. Its self explanatory.
-
while you're at it read up on the difference between indica and sativa strains. in laymens terms, indica is the "sit on the couch and watch robot chicken and eat ice cream" it hits you mentally and physically. sativa is basically a similar mental high, but without the physical laziness.<p> or in even more simpler terms. indica is the shit most teens smoke, sativa is what most grown adults who care to know the difference smoke. (or indica is the pussy you got in high school, sativa is the pussy you get at 30 with a job and a house) <p> and for any you narcs, i got a prescription. us crazy californians (wait for it.... wait... okay, insert gay marriage joke here) *puff*puff*give*
-
I saw Nude Bomb down under with a preview of Airplane....didn't do it any favors. I do have a soft spot for it though. Don Adams, much missed here.
-
<p class=MsoNormal>I thought the release of CLASSE TOUS RISQUES would get some attention. It's a 1960 gangster flick with <span class=SpellE>Lino</span> Ventura and a young Jean-Paul Belmondo. Anyone who loves THE GODFATHER and THE SOPRANOS should check it out. <span class=GramE>Great script, great acting and some beautiful B&W photography.</span> This movie was released in 1960 and was swiftly swept aside when the French New Wave hit cinemas with films like "400 BLOWS" and "BREATHLESS," which ironically also starred Belmondo. Suddenly, everything had to have a jump-cut to be “in” and this well crafted thriller was overlooked. </p>
-
<p class=MsoNormal>This is a new <span class=GramE>CRITERION<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'> </span>release</span> too, so I'm twice surprised Harry didn't mention it. It's a great movie and this edition rocks without costing an arm and a leg. I also recommended it to impress your friends with you film knowledge without boring yourself to death for 2 hours.</p>
-
and no one has mentioned the movie, super high me. its actually pretty good.. Doug Benson is a regular pot user, and he goes 30 days not smoking, to 30 days begin high every waking moment. they do some medical tests before and after and the results are kind of surprising.. as is his attitude on being high for 30 days straight by the end of the movie. (well, surprising for me)
-
Fuck Steve Carell. You can't do Get Smart without Don Adams. The new movie will either be A) More lame Steve Carell humor where he stands and yells odd things or B) a bad impersonation of Dan Adams. No thanks. You can keep that crap.
-
Look at that Fanny DVD cover art. Am I the only one who seees this?
-
Oddly, the only time I lose weight is when I stop drinking and replace it with smoking weed. I love doing crunches when I'm stoned. I forget what I'm doing and grind out 200 of the fuckers (in my best days). Nowadays, because I'm drinking wine instead of smoking pot, I am tubby and lazy. Why not give up both, you ask? Don't be silly...

I have a movie playing and can do work as I watch a movie.
by abcdefz7
This explains so much.
-
And boy do I miss it, some stuff was just so much better when high, who agrees? I found Devil's Rejects to be almost a religious experience when baked... although still great sober
-
I was thinking the exact same thing. How the hell can you do both and not doing a shitty job/having a lousy movie experience? Best case scenario, either activities are incomplete, man.
-
People who say "lol" are gay.
-
That would be awesome. I haven't seen that in years. But it's not listed on the extras on my disc. Is Harry mistaken?
-
Fanny... all love stories rolled into one.
-
aww shit, i might have to bust out my vhs copy... wow, i almost totally forgot it existed, to be honest. people are talking about pete's dragon and i'm like "what the fuck is that?" but it all came back to me... it's been years since i saw that movie. like... maybe ten or eleven years. as for worst disney movie, i would concur on the Sword and the Stone and Black Cauldron. I was always a big fan of Oliver and Company and Great Mouse Detective (although i haven't seen either in ages either...) but my favorite was always the Jungle Book.
-
Maxwell Smart: *** "Would You Believe...?" *** "Sorry About That, Chief." *** "And Lovin' It." *** "Missed It By THAT Much." *** My personal favorite is when beautiful AGENT 99 (Barbara Eden) says "Oh, MAX!!!" Also loved THE CONE OF SILENCE.
